Nothing better epitomizes the gulf that now exists between the Conservative and Labour elite and their voters than immigration. So argues Prof. Matt Goodwin in this episode of Deprogrammed. He points out that the Conservative establishment have failed to understand that immigration is the second most important issue for Conservative voters, many of whom now find themselves politically homeless. The same applies to many Labour voters. Whilst there are smaller parties that have stronger immigration policies (Reform, Reclaim & SDP) these are not cutting through with the general public. As a result there is a huge gap in the market for a powerful new insurgent party to emerge - much as UKIP did. The Conservative Party meanwhile is failing to do the one thing that has ensured its survival through the centuries: re-invent itself. The current Conservative Party is not a serious party, Prof. Goodwin contends. Our guest on this week's Whittle is Tim Dieppe, Head of Public Policy at Christian Concern and author of an upcoming publication on free speech & Islamophobia. Tim & Peter discuss "Islamophobia Revisited" (https://www.civitas.org.uk/publicatio... ), a new report by Civitas' Hardeep Singh. Tim reveals the disturbing ways in which criticism of Islam is being silenced. All Parliamentary political parties except for the Conservative Party have adopted a broad and "problematic" definition of Islamophobia which links it with racism and makes any legitimate criticism of the religion "Islamophobic". In Islamophobia Revisited, Hardeep Singh conducts a thorough investigation into how Islamophobia is defined by local authorities describing a ‘panoply’ of different approaches and definitions. In response to a large-scale Freedom of Information exercise, Singh discovers that one in seven (15.6 per cent) local authorities in England have adopted a definition of ‘Islamophobia’ described by the government as ‘not fit for purpose’. Singh finds 22.7 per cent of Welsh local authorities and 25 per cent of Scottish local authorities have adopted this disputed definition. The adoption of a disputed definition of Islamophobia has ‘taken on a life of its own’ according to Singh, who raises concerns over conflating race with religion and claims that ‘Islamophobia is a type of racism.’ Singh raises concerns over an officially recognised definition of Islamophobia, something he says ‘conflates race with religion’ across local authorities. Singh provides compelling evidence that not enough due diligence or scrutiny has been conducted by local authorities over their approach to defining Islamophobia as a form of racism, with concerns over free speech ‘largely dismissed.’ Singh claims the adoption of a disputed definition of Islamophobia prevents ‘an honest conversation about public policies relating to faith or religion, or basic historical truths’, and recommends that local councils do more to protect free speech and avoid critics of religion or religious practice being described as ‘racist’ and potential prosecution under hate speech laws. Can the Conservative Party escape its existential crisis? On today's #NCFWhittle we are joined once again by Professor Doug Stokes, Professor of International Relations at the University of Exeter, and author of the new book "Against Decolonisation: Campus Culture Wars & The Decline of the West". Following the killing of George Floyd in 2020, a moral panic gripped the US and UK. To atone for an alleged history of racism, statues were torn down and symbols of national identity attacked. Across universities, fringe theories became the new orthodoxy, with a cadre of activists backed by university technocrats adopting a binary worldview of moral certainty, sin and deconstructive redemption through Western self-erasure. In his hard-hitting book, Prof. Stokes surveys these developments for the first time. He unpacks and challenges the theories and arguments deployed by ‘decolonisers’ in a university system now characterised by garbled leadership and illiberal groupthink. The desire to question the West’s sense of itself, deconstruct its narratives and overthrow its institutional order is an impulse that, ironically, was underpinned by a more confident and assured Western hegemony, which is now waning and under great strain. She discusses a new report by "Don't Divide Us" which exposes the third-party organisations that are promoting radical political beliefs in schools through EDI provision. Beliefs such as: * Britain is an institutionally racist country due to a selective account of its past * White people are privileged * Black people can only succeed if white people make space for them * Colour-blind approaches to inequality are not respectable beliefs * Impartiality in schools is a problem She argues that these groups operate in ways that avoid public accountability, political responsibility, and have very little basis in established academic/educational sources of authority.
