Eric Canete on Absolute Batman, Designing Poison Ivy & Coming Back to Comics21 Sep 202601:03:04

Eric Canete returns to the Nerdy Mewzings Podcast following a trip to SuperManila Comic Con, which included a visit with family in the Philippines, and a year that saw him return to the world of comic books on Absolute Batman, featuring the debut of Absolute Poison Ivy! Eric talks about leaving a 15-year video-game job, getting pushed by longtime friends Matteo Scalera and Shawn Crystal to treat comics as the full-time gig, and how Ivan Brandon and Nick Dragotta opened the door for his return at New York Comic Con.

We talked about the process of finding his rhythm on the project via sample pages he made while sick after the show, designing Absolute Poison Ivy as a monster first then using the “pretty construct” as a rug pull, as well as the one line from Nick Dragotta that unlocked his ability to properly portray Absolute Batman.

He also covers his approach to using Otomo style screen tone, why he would train a new artist on six- and nine-panel pages before splash pages, creating Youngblood variants for Rob Liefeld, Skinbreaker variants with David Finch and Robert Kirkman, the possibility of Arc Athena collected editions, his time at Iconic Comics, and how storyboarding taught him to cut detail down to what the reader actually needs.

Artist Jin Han on Diversifying Across Comics, Toys & Concept Art14 Sep 202601:05:38

Concept and Comic Artist Jin Han joins Nerdy Mewzings to discuss his career which has spanned comics (Spawn coloring and fill-in work), McFarlane Toys (lead concept artist), animation, and running Yellow Tracksuit Entertainment, which consults and designs for Hasbro, Mattel, Jazwares, Playmates Toys, Disney, Universal, and Sony.

Jin and James talk about the importance of creative diversification, how original art collecting taught him scale and the penciler-inker relationship, and why he’s been moving back toward traditional work after years of digital. They cover Whilce Portacio’s early digital pioneering, Brian Haberlin’s advice to hide brush strokes, Travis Charest’s constant evolution, Mike Mignola’s economy of form, and the realities of the original art and collectibles markets.

The conversation closes with a discussion about Marvel Studios laying off nearly its entire creative team, Disney’s AI partnerships, and how creators need to be prepared to pivot in ever changing times!

Ghost Man Haunts Again: Comic Creator Raymar Brunson Returns to Nerdy Mewzings07 Sep 202601:07:08

Independent Comic Book Creator Raymar Brunson ( ⁨@artofbrunson⁩ ) returns to Nerdy Mewzings more than a year after his first appearance with a packed slate: Ghost Man Haunts Again (issue 3, 56 pages, out October from Cosmic Lion Productions), self-published Gatling Boy with Kevin Anthony Catalan, Pickle PI, Damu, and an upcoming flip-book collab with Erwin Papa.

Raymar talks about jumping into comics in 2023 after years of photography and music videos, living at home to grind, networking with people already doing the work, and treating Ghost Man as a fun testing ground for his art. He breaks down digital pencils + traditional inks, tight thumbnails inspired by Chris Samnee, favorite tools, and influences from Bruce Timm and James Harren to Frank Miller, Jordi Bernet, and Alex Toth.

We also cover printing for self publishing, saying yes to almost everything, and why he still loves the Punisher-inspired vigilante at the heart of Ghost Man (now with sidekick Head Hauntcho).

Artist Colm Griffin on Directing, Radiant Black, & Variant Covers31 Aug 202601:00:48

Artist Colm Griffin stops by Nerdy Mewzings and becomes the fourth Irish comic creator on the show! We talked about how he is balancing a thriving film directing career along with his lifelong passion for comic books.

Colm shares about growing up in a small Irish town with limited comic access, the chance encounters that sent him into animation instead of fine art, and how versatility (penciling, inking, coloring, Adobe After Effects, editing) opened every door for his career.

We cover his 225-page self-made comic he worked on during a production lull, early IDW work on Beast Wars, the game-changing Radiant Black “Tron cover” for Kyle Higgins, current Power Rangers and upcoming Ninja Turtles covers, and a newly signed (still secret) project.

He also discusses studying artist editions, real-time feedback from Irish peers like Danny Earls and Declan Shalvey, treating art like a blue-collar job, and why he still draws for himself after a long day of directing.

Artist Nate Myers on Creator Owned Comics, Kickstarter & Self-Taught Art24 Aug 202601:02:54

Nate Myers joins Nerdy Mewzings to talk about his creator-owned series 'Predation', the joys and challenges of doing every creative role yourself, and launching successful Kickstarters from the Pacific Northwest. Nate shares childhood inspirations from Batman ’89, Ninja Turtles, ThunderCats, and Todd McFarlane’s Spider-Man/Spawn, plus later influences like Andy Kubert and Erik Larsen. A lifelong doodler who taught himself through practice and YouTube, he walks the long path from a 2000s Kinko’s made comic to finally feeling ready to publish.

We dive into Predation’s story (hero Talis vs. overlord Ramus in a sci-fi/fantasy world blending Conan and ThunderCats vibes), his full-size thumbnail-to-Bristol process, traditional pencils/inks into digital color and lettering, and the lessons from his first successful Kickstarter.

Issue 2 is nearly complete, with a new Kickstarter planned right after Pacific Nerdwest and ashcan editions ready for the show https://pacificnerdwest.com

Ryan Crowe on This Land Is Old and Dark, Scott Snyder & Horror17 Aug 202600:51:14

Writer and Comedian Ryan Crowe joins Nerdy Mewzings to discuss his new comic book 'This Land Is Old and Dark', a three-issue horror miniseries from Invader Comics featuring stunning art by Abel Garcia.

Set in the late 18th century during westward expansion, the story explores themes of land ownership, the untamable wilderness, and humanity’s folly against primordial nature — all rendered in a striking black, red, and sepia palette born from smart creative constraints. Ryan shares how Scott Snyder mentored him through the Substack community, the economic and artistic choices that shaped the book’s unique look, discovering Abel Garcia on Instagram, and landing variant covers from legends like Michael Kaluta and Simon Bisley.

We also delve into his comedy background (Drunk Theater), lifelong love of writing and comics (from Superman and Spawn to Moebius and underground work), and what’s next after issue one (releasing late August) already broke sales records for the publisher!

Yevgeny Sokolov Returns: Creating Pro Comic Book Covers and Teaching Fine Art22 Jun 202600:56:40

Yevgeny Sokolov (fine arts instructor turned pro comic book artist) joins Nerdy Mewzings once again to discuss his transition from traditional fine art and high school teaching, drawing professional comic book covers, and the creative process behind his work.

Yevgeny shares how he started drawing as a child, pursued fine arts in college, and made the leap to comics during the pandemic by studying David Finch tutorials and building comic-style fundamentals. He talks about his creative process, using photo reference for hands and poses, and why planning thumbnails is crucial. We chatted about influences on his style, including Mike Mignola’s use of heavy blacks, Frank Miller studies, and the importance of dramatic lighting in comics vs. fine art.

He also opens up about balancing commissions, teaching, and professional cover gigs for Ripperverse, the value of community (Uncanny Art-Men streams), and advice for aspiring artists: draw every day, study masters, and don’t be afraid to scrap work that isn’t right.

Jordan Morris on Writing for Comic books, Animation, and Comedy08 Jun 202600:52:55

Jordan Morris (writer of Predator: Bloodshed with artist Ruairi Coleman) joins Nerdy Mewzings to discuss his path from childhood comics fan to writing for Marvel, animation (Teen Titans Go, Jellystone), and creator-owned work.

Jordan shares how he discovered comics through Spider-Man and X-Men, learned the craft via Brian Michael Bendis’ Words for Pictures, and broke into comics with the graphic novel Bubble (based on his podcast). He talks about writing for animation, the joy of playing in the Spider-Verse with Spider-Versity (teaming younger spiders like Miles, Gwen, and Spider-Boy for a training camp story with big bad looming), and crafting brutal action in Predator: Bloodshed (an underground fighting tournament gone wrong).

He also opens up about balancing funny character moments with high-stakes adventure, why he gravitates toward deep-cut characters, and advice for aspiring writers: just write something and put it online — no gatekeepers needed. Katelyn Windels (Kate Komics) joins Nerdy Mewzings fresh off Emerald City Comic-Con to talk about her path from rural farm life and discovering comics through Spider-Man DVDs, to becoming a full-time artist at VeeFriends, and launching her creator-owned horror comic Devil in the Herd with Invader Comics.

Kate shares how she always drew as a kid, found her love for comics through 90s cartoons and movies, and pursued a rare comic art degree at MCAD. She discusses shifting from traditional art to fully digital with Procreate, using photo reference and posing for dynamic work, and why Mike Mignola’s heavy blacks and storytelling remain her biggest influence.

Kate talks about the challenges and dopamine of consistent posting, the importance of fundamentals, and why she loves drawing other people’s stories while still carving out her own horror tales.

Comic Book Writer Ray Jamison: The Madcaps, Indie Comics & Storytelling11 May 202600:47:15

Ray Jamison (indie comic writer and creator of The Madcaps) joins Nerdy Mewzings for a fun conversation about turning his D&D homebrew campaigns into a fantasy horror comic, growing up with 80s cartoons, action figures, and comics, and launching his 3-issue miniseries on Kickstarter.

Ray shares how the unholy trinity of 80s cartoons, toys, and comics shaped him, from Transformers and GI Joe to Batman ’89 in theaters and the explosive 90s Image era. He talks about moving from RPG storytelling with friends to writing original characters and injecting real emotion into The Madcaps — a story of four tight-knit friends hunting a necromancer during a curse and zombie-like outbreak in their hometown. The book is packed with camaraderie, heart, horror, and that classic fantasy adventure feel.

He breaks down his creative process using Roll20 to map out scenes, working with talented collaborators like Victor Medina on art for issues 2 & 3, and Dan Kemp on colors. Ray also opens up about the balance between strong storytelling and dynamic art, and why he’s excited to bring this world to readers!

The Madcaps Issue 3 Kickstarter is currently LIVE on Kickstarter! Issues 1 & 2 will be available in the campaign along with variants, glow-in-the-dark elements, lava foil covers, and more. Perfect for fans of indie fantasy, horror with heart, and strong character relationships.

Keith Morange: From Storyboarding for Marvel & Disney to Creating a Graphic Novel23 Mar 202600:59:02

Storyboard artist Keith Morange (Marvel, Disney, HBO, Katy Perry videos) joins Nerdy Mewzings to discuss pivoting from childhood Hulk/Superman comics to live-action storyboarding, why comics offer "no compromise" freedom, and his upcoming indie sci-fi graphic novel Sky Lights—a tale of UFO conspiracies, indigo kids, human-initiated contact, and deepening mystery!

Key highlights:

-Early influences: Sal Buscema Hulk, Curt Swan Superman, Greatest American Hero

-Storyboarding realities: 20-50 frames/day, loose/fast style, invisible art frustrations

-AI in art: Acceptance over resistance, useful tools vs. losing personal voice/sacredness in comics

-Sky Lights process: 200+ pages, full creator control (pencils, inks, colors, lettering), pacing like music, growth serving the story

-Discipline & mindset: Showing up on low-confidence days, rest/recovery parallels to BJJ/warrior mindset

-UFO mysteries inspiring the book, art's job to deepen the unknown

-Upcoming: Cover finished (end 2025), coloring near-complete, trailer soon, Kickstarter summer 2026—sign up on his site for notifications!

Sky Lights is self-contained story with epic scope—don't miss it!

Join James as he chats with legendary comic book artist Matteo Scalera (Black Science, Batman, Deadpool, Hulk, Nemesis Forever, King of Spies) — the latest 'catch' in the InkPulp crew!

Matteo shares his origin story: growing up in Italy obsessed with Dylan Dog, Spawn, 90s Image comics, and Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac), attending comic schools in Milan, winning a major contest judged by Sergio Toppi, breaking into US comics via Image, his big Batman issue, long collabs with Mark Millar, switching to one-to-one traditional art, and the deeply personal inspiration behind his new creator-owned graphic novel, The Fourth Father — a 190-page family drama with superhero touches, born from becoming a dad.

We dive into process, humility at early cons, paying it forward with portfolio reviews, the InkPulp brotherhood (Eric, Jim, Shawn), and why this book means so much to him.

The One Man Comic Book Studio: Artist Victor Medina on Penciling, Inking, and Coloring02 Mar 202600:55:05

Join me on Nerdy Mewzings as I sit down with incredibly talented comic artist and colorist Victor Medina!

He shares his rollercoaster journey in comics—from peeking at his brother's Conan books as a kid, falling in love with '90s legends like Marc Silvestri, Jim Lee, and Todd McFarlane, to a shocking high school art class nightmare that almost derailed his passion forever. We dive deep into his comebacks: discovering new artists during hiatuses, working at Disneyland, experimenting with pinup photography to level up his understanding of color and composition, and finally breaking through by winning Mad Cave Studios' 2024 Talent Search as a colorist.

Now he's leveling up fast—finishing sequentials on the fantasy miniseries The Madcaps (his first full interiors!), jumping between pencils/inks and colors, switching to Clip Studio Paint for that perfect traditional feel digitally, and tackling upcoming projects (including a secret big one at Mad Cave).

Victor drops real talk for aspiring creators: don't quit even if you're "older" (he's 49 and just getting started!), always keep learning, seek honest feedback (shoutout to Ryan Benjamin, Steve Oliff, Alex Sinclair, and Marc Silvestri), ignore like counts, and get your work in front of editors.

He's super open—hit him up for brushes, blue-line inks to practice over, or coloring advice!

Derek Laufman: From 90s Image Comics Obsession to Drawing I Hate Fairyland!19 Jan 202600:53:03

Join James once again in the Nerdy Mewzings Podcast studio for an epic, nostalgic deep dive with acclaimed cartoonist & writer Derek Laufman — the ongoing artist on Skottie Young's hit series I Hate Fairyland from Image Comics!

In this must-watch interview, Derek shares his wild journey through the comic industry:

-Growing up obsessed with 90s Image Comics legends like Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, and Rob Liefeld

-The highs and lows of animation school at Sheridan College

-Heartbreaking early setbacks in comics; pivots into video games and freelance

-Rediscovering his passion through forums like Digital Webbing and DeviantArt

-And finally landing the dream gig on I Hate Fairyland after years of creator-owned work.

We geek out over GI Joe, Spawn speculation, the magic of old-school forums (shoutout to Ryan Ottley, Ryan Stegman, and the "cool kids" like Scotty Young), finding your artistic voice, the importance of fundamentals over flash, and why it's never too late to chase your comic dreams — Derek was 47 when he went full-time on Fairyland! Plus, Derek talks about his own incredible creator-owned books like Ruinworld, Bot-9 (wordless graphic novel inspired by Miyazaki), The Witch of Wickerson, Crimson Fall (Hellboy + Witcher vibes), and his current project Rats of Ironwood.

Brett Bean: Image Comics Series D'ORC: Half-Dwarf, Half-Orc Chaos Incoming!12 Jan 202600:57:49

Join me on the Nerdy Mewzings Podcast for an epic, heartfelt conversation with the incredibly talented Brett Bean — artist behind I Hate Fairyland, Dungeon Crawler Carl: The Crocodile, and now his brand-new creator-owned high-fantasy comedy series D'ORC launching February 4, 2026 from Image Comics! Brett shares his wild journey: skipping school to read Savage Sword of Conan at a Circle K (and getting picked up by the police!), growing up in a religious household where comics were hidden treasures, losing everything in a fire (echoing Eric Larsen's story), transitioning from video games (Sony's Syphon Filter & SOCOM), concept art, Jim Henson puppet design (!), and finally chasing his lifelong dream of making comics.

We bond over Washington State roots, destroyed childhood comic collections by family, religious upbringings clashing with Spawn and heavy metal mags, supportive spouses, avoiding burnout, and the magic of problem-solving in creative careers. Plus, the big reveal: D'ORC — a hilarious half-dwarf, half-orc misfit (all DORK!) caught in a doomsday prophecy that says he's destined to end the world. Elves vs. Orcs, wizards vs. common sense, dragons vs. everyone... and a chicken? Perfect for fans of Conan, Lord of the Rings, and deadpan humor like Gert's. With stunning art by Brett, colors by Jean-François Beaulieu (I Hate Fairyland), and letters by Nate Piekos (Minor Threats), plus insane variant covers from Ryan Ottley, Ryan Stegman, Mirka Andolfo, and more — this is the fantasy romp we've been waiting for!

We also geek out over influences (Bill Watterson, Todd McFarlane, Mike Mignola, Moebius, Eastman & Laird's TMNT, and modern stars like Daniel Warren Johnson), original art collections, Star Wars prototypes, Muppets, and why passion is more important than perfection.

If you love creator journeys, fantasy comics, or just great nerdy chats, hit play now. Don't forget to buy D'ORC #1 at your local comic shop February 4th and Keep it nerdy!
