| Tasting Dubonnet with Sother Teague | 24 Oct 2024 | 00:15:06 | |
For this tasting I was joined by Sother Teague, bartender, drinks writer, and host of The Speakeasy Podcast at his bar Amor y Amargo in NYC’s East Village. Sother is known for his love of bitter and amari, so I brought him the closest thing I’ve found from Grandma’s collection – a Bottle #42: Dubonnet. This classic French fortifed wine has a long history, including being a favorite of the recently departed Queen Elizabeth. We tasted my tiny bottle of 1970s French Dubonnet up against two comparison bottles: a modern bottle of French Dubonnet and a modern bottle of American Dubonnet from Heaven Hill. While two products with the same name, they diverged from each other around World War II, so this was a really interesting opportunity to see how they all compared! For this tasting video I was joined by the incomparable and fabulous ms. franky marshall. We talked about the rich history of Cognac, including how it's made and enjoyed, and what's happening in modern Cognac trends. Then we dove into tasting and comparing two tiny bottles - my grandma's bottle of 1970s Hennessy Cognac and a modern bottle. | #86 Luksusowa Vodka | 17 Oct 2024 | 00:05:38
As was apparent in Reveal #17, when I was very much NOT excited to discover this bottle of Luksusowa Vodka from Poland in Grandma’s collection, I’m not a huge vodka fan. I like spirits and liqueurs because the flavors are so interesting and, most of the time with vodka, flavor is not the point! But I also like spirits and liqueurs because they have fascinating stories. And on that score, vodka does not disappoint. | #75 Courvoisier | 01 Aug 2024 | 00:05:01
While the youngest of the Big Four houses, Courvoisier Cognac has definitely made its mark. Like Bottle #19: Hennessy, it is particularly well loved by the African American community and was commemorated by rap group Busta Rhymes in the 2001 hit “Pass the Courvoisier.” But long before that association, Courvoisier was capitalizing on another famous personality: Napoleon Bonaparte. This required an impressive bit of marketing, given that Napoleon died in 1821: 17 years before the House of Courvoisier was officially founded in 1838. Find out all about it in this episode inspired by my 1980s bottle from Grandma's collection. Check out this bottle on https://mytinybottles.com/ for pictures and more. Want even more? | Another Look at Myers's Rum (Liquor & Liqueur Connoisseur) | 25 Jul 2024 | 00:20:15
Hello My Tiny Bottles listeners! This summer has been really hectic, and I don't have a new episode for you this week. Instead, I'm bringing you a guest episode from another podcast I think you'll love - Liquor and Liqueur Connoisseur. Host Matt Birchard and I are planning to meet up later in the year to taste some Tiny Bottles together, but in the meantime, I wanted to give you a sneak peak at his podcast. This particular episode is Matt's take on Bottle #72 - Myers's Rum. He did some amazing digging to find out the origin story of the brand. Without it, I would have had almost nothing to say when I first talked about the company in Bottle #45 - Myers Original Rum Cream. So it's a really nice complement to my episodes. Give it a listen, and be sure to subscribe if you enjoy Matt's approach as much as I do! Cheers!
| Tasting Coffee Liqueurs with Bea Bradsell | 18 Jul 2024 | 00:20:17 | |
Grandma's collection of miniature liquor bottles has gifted me with three different coffee liqueurs so far - a 1960s or 70s Tia Maria, 1980s Cafe Noir from McGuinness, and 1990s Coloma coffee liqueur. In this episode I open them all with Bea Bradsell. Bea is director of The Drink Cabinet and daughter of Dick Bradsell, the man who invented the espresso martini, and a really important figure in the history of UK mixology. Bea and I talk about Dick's legacy, sample grandma's tiny bottles of coffee liqueur, and discuss which one would work best in an espresso martini.
