🔶 From being a standout computer science student, helping her father with his handwritten books, to challenging societal norms, she has always pursued her passion for technology and design.

🔶 Alison emphasizes the power of curiosity, saying, "You need to ask questions, and if you don't ask these questions, you won't get the answers you need. That will then inform your visual or design decisions."

🔶 Reflecting on her childhood, Alison shares, "I have aunties who believe that the woman's room is the kitchen. Every time you're having family functions, you should be cooking, you should be cleaning, which I do anyways, but that's not my identity." This highlights the traditional expectations she faced and overcame. It was a constant struggle to balance my interests and their expectations."

🔶 Alison’s career path is a testament to her resilience and adaptability. From studying medical biochemistry to interning in oil and gas, and finally finding her true calling in design, she has navigated many fields. "I moved from being a graphic designer to a medical student to an oil and gas intern," she recounts with a smile.

🔶 Alison’s story also touches on the challenges of gender bias in technology. She recalls a male classmate who doubted women's abilities to code. "I had a guy in my class say that girls don't know how to code," she remembers. This stereotype didn’t stop her from excelling and pursuing her passion. She adds, "There were always those who believed tech wasn't a field for women, but I knew I belonged."

🔶 Education plays a crucial role in Alison's story. She talks about the impractical nature of studying biochemistry in Nigeria due to inadequate resources and teaching methods. "It was the most impractical course, actually. I don't recommend anybody study biochemistry in Nigeria," she states. This educational disparity can demotivate students and lead to a lack of confidence in their chosen fields.

Our host, Alice Kanjejo, explores Julius's amazing journey from medical research in biotechnology to joining the banking sector, being part of the founding team at Peach Payments, and now working at Paymentology. Julius shares his experiences, giving us great insights into the world of financial technology in Africa.

Julius’s story started in medical research but shifted to fintech because he wanted to solve real-world problems. At Peach Payments, he helped make a payment service provider (PSP) work well in Kenya, tackling the big issue of payment delays. His work led to three banks supporting Peach Payments, showing how important it is for banks and fintech companies to work together.

He discusses the pressure on banks to team up with fintechs. As the financial world changes quickly, traditional banks see the benefits of partnering with innovative fintech companies to improve their services and stay competitive. Julius explains how Paymentology works with banks across Africa, helping them issue cards and make financial services more accessible. This is vital in Africa, where every market has its own unique challenges and opportunities.

Julius also shares valuable advice for those looking to make it in fintech. He believes success comes from understanding problems deeply before finding solutions. "Payments are just problems. The answer is not in the solution; the answer is in the problem. To have an answer, you must have a question," he says. This approach drives innovation and effective solutions in fintech.

This episode stars Joe Kinvi, co-founder of HoaQ and founder of Stealth Startup, his story came across not as extraordinary, but universal in its very humanness. Growing up between countries, he recalls feeling unsure of where he fit in. Joe Kinvi is a notable figure in the African tech investment landscape, having transitioned from a background in finance to entrepreneurship and tech investment. He co-founded HoaQ, an investor community focused on backing entrepreneurs and creating scalable businesses for Africa and its diaspora​ (Empower Africa)​​ (AfriTech XYZ)​. But even then, Joe's innate curiosity pushed him to explore. I chuckled when he spoke fondly of a wealthy family friend sparking boyhood dreams of success. "Washing that fancy car, I'd imagine what it must be like."

At 12, moving to Ireland knowing only French intensified that feeling of not belonging. Yet through daily trips to the library, and bonding with Michael over football, English gradually became less frightening. Hard work and friendship - simple but powerful remedies we all rely on.Academically, Joe thrived. But pursuing accounting purely for its stability left him unfulfilled.

"Deep down, I yearned for something more meaningful." Who among us has not questioned our path, with careers often an uncertain journey of self-discovery. Entrepreneurship demanded risks, but creating his fintech platform to bring people together aligned with Joe's spirit of curiosity. Through building community and connections, he found joy and purpose - primal human needs we all strive to fulfill.

However, the 1987 banking crisis, "Black Monday," prompted her to rediscover her passion for education, setting the stage for her inspiring career in higher learning 📚. Throughout her journey, Dr. Yvette honed her leadership style through diverse roles at institutions with students from various backgrounds, including Hispanic-serving institutions, HBCUs, and institutions with students from Native American and African backgrounds. Her experiences crystallized her leadership style that is characterized by transformation and servant leadership.🤩 Upon her arrival at Carnegie Mellon University Africa in Kigali, Rwanda🇷🇼 , Dr. Yvette continued her mission of promoting diversity and inclusion in education. Through partnerships with the government of Rwanda and the Mastercard Foundation, her team provides scholarships and opportunities for underrepresented students, particularly women in STEM fields. The institution now boasts of a diverse student body representing 21 African countries, with students embarking on internships across the globe. Dr. Yvette's dedication to retaining talent on the continent shines through, as 90% of alumni choose to stay in Africa. This season is ideal for those interested in the tech industry, startups, or securing funding, as our mission is to deliver engaging and informative stories. You might be wondering why we chose Rwanda as the focal point for Season Two. Rwanda's tech scene is growing rapidly, becoming one of the fastest-emerging tech hubs in East Africa and across the continent. Despite a 4.3% reduction in tech investments across the continent from the previous year, East Africa still leads with investments totaling $47.4 million, concentrated mainly in Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda. After Season One's strong emphasis on Kenya, we decided to explore what's happening in Kigali, and that's what we did in Season Two. We extend our gratitude to some incredible individuals who made this season possible. Monica Sumbi, the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications at Carnegie Mellon University, Africa, played a vital role in connecting us with our Season Two guests. Nick Carney provided invaluable support during my solo trip to Kigali. In this inspiring episode of "My Tech Story Africa," we are introduced to Tobenna Abanofor, a highly skilled and passionate engineer who has had an incredible journey in the tech industry. Tobenna's story is one of determination, resilience, and seizing opportunities.

Tobenna's tech journey began in his childhood when his father gifted him a game console. Intrigued by how the games worked, Tobenna decided to explore the electronics inside the console and tinker with them, hoping to create his own games. Although his early attempts were unsuccessful, his curiosity and passion for building never wavered.

Throughout his schooling years, Tobenna excelled in technology-related subjects and developed a love for visual arts and technical drawing. He dreamed of becoming a footballer, who was also a rock star but also wanted to learn how to make games. This desire eventually led him to choose computer science in university, against the wishes of his parents, who were skeptical about the potential of the tech industry at the time.

Tobenna's journey took him from Nigeria to Cyprus, then Canada and then to Kenya, where he faced numerous challenges, including financial struggles and the need to find work to support himself. Despite these hurdles, he continued to build his coding skills and sought opportunities to showcase his talent. He freelanced on platforms like Fiverr, gaining experience and positive reviews, which helped him secure more projects.

Through his persistence and the recognition of his abilities, Tobenna landed a job as a founding engineer at AI Care, a telematics company in Kenya. This opportunity allowed him to not only contribute to building the company's infrastructure but also provided him with ownership through ESOPs (Employee Stock Ownership Plans). He saw this role as an opportunity to invest his time in the company and grow as both an engineer and an aspiring investor.

Tobenna's story is a testament to the power of determination and being prepared when opportunities arise. His unwavering passion for coding, willingness to take on challenges, and his ability to adapt to new environments have propelled him forward in his tech career. He emphasizes the importance of aligning personal goals with the mission of a company and finding opportunities to invest time and skills to gain ownership in the projects he works on.

Tobenna's journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring engineers and entrepreneurs in Africa and beyond, reminding us that success is achievable through hard work, resilience, and a passion for building and creating meaningful solutions.

In this inspiring episode of "My Tech Story Africa," Patricia Wanjira, a passionate product marketer and the marketing and coms lead at Chumz IO, shares her remarkable journey of impact and adaptability. Patricia's story begins with her strong interest in medicine, influenced by her older sister. However, after exploring different options and realizing the need to keep her options open, she shifted her focus to finance during her high school years.

While pursuing her professional certifications in finance and investment analysis, Patricia discovered a course called Behavioral Finance, which fascinated her. This course allowed her to understand the impact of human behavior on investment decisions and made her realize that she could make a real impact in the field of marketing. Understanding that marketing is the space where she could influence people's behavior and actions, she decided to specialize in marketing, combining her finance knowledge with the power of marketing strategies.

Patricia's journey continued as she joined Unilever, one of the dominant players in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry. Despite her initial focus on marketing, she found herself in the sales department, which proved to be a significant learning experience. With her introverted nature, being at the forefront of selling and interacting with customers challenged her in ways she hadn't expected. Nevertheless, Patricia embraced the opportunity to explore her strengths and grow both personally and professionally.

Starting off in regional account management, Patricia worked with regional supermarkets across different parts of the country. This experience allowed her to develop a deep understanding of the distribution and retail landscape, honing her skills in building relationships with retailers and driving sales.

Throughout her journey, Patricia's adaptability and passion for social innovation remained at the core of her work. As the marketing lead at Tombs IO, she successfully led the go-to-market strategy and execution of the Chumz app in Kenya. Despite the challenges faced by startups, Patricia's efforts resulted in impressive customer base growth of over 80,000 within a year of regulatory approval.

Patricia's story serves as a powerful reminder that the path to success is not always linear. By staying open-minded, embracing opportunities, and leveraging her diverse skills, she carved out a unique career trajectory that allowed her to make a meaningful impact.
