| What Role Does Law Play in Solving Africa’s Connectivity Crisis? I JUNE OKAL - ICAAN | 15 Jan 2025 | 01:07:32 | |
Host Alice Kanjejo engages in an enlightening conversation with June Okal, a pioneering force at the intersection of technology, policy, and law in Africa. Currently serving as the senior manager for East and Southern Africa at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), June's journey exemplifies how strategic thinking and continuous learning can shape a remarkable career. June's story begins with her early experience at Equity Bank straight out of high school, where challenging work conditions taught her valuable lessons about professional life. Her path through law school at the University of Nairobi was marked by strategic choices, including joining the Google Student Ambassador program, which introduced her to the possibilities within the tech world. Her career progression showcases impressive versatility - from specialized law firms to intellectual property consulting, Google, Facebook (Meta), and tower infrastructure companies. Each role contributed to her holistic understanding of the tech ecosystem. June's philosophy of "loyalty is to yourself" challenges traditional notions about career longevity, emphasizing the importance of continuous growth and learning. A significant milestone in her journey was pursuing her master's degree at American University Washington College of Law, cleverly supported by a simultaneous role at Facebook. This was followed by a fellowship at Harvard's Institute of Rebooting Social Media, where she conducted groundbreaking research on social media regulation across 48 African countries. The conversation delves deep into June's work at ICANN, where she focuses on increasing African participation in the domain name industry through talent development, capacity building, and new domain name initiatives. She emphasizes three key principles for success: continuous learning, kindness, and building solid networks. June references "The Proximity Principle," highlighting how often it's not close friends but loose connections that lead to significant opportunities. Throughout the discussion, June repeatedly emphasizes the importance of meaningful connectivity for Africans, the need for African representation in global tech policy discussions, and the critical role of narrative-building in sharing African stories. She acknowledges the valuable contributions of the African tech diaspora in creating opportunities back home, while also addressing the unique challenges and opportunities for women in tech. This episode serves as both an inspiring blueprint and a practical guide for aspiring professionals in the tech-policy space, particularly resonating with African professionals looking to make an impact in the global tech ecosystem while addressing unique continental challenges. | Building Global Design Solutions: Insights from Senior Product Designer Aaron Onu | After Hours 🍸 | 16 Dec 2024 | 00:40:56
In this episode of "After Hours," host Alice Kanjejo sits down with Aaron Onu, a senior product designer and co-founder of Los Hombres design studio, over Tanqueray cocktails at Art Cafe Gastro Bar. Aaron shares his journey from electrical engineering to becoming a respected figure in product design. Aaron's story begins with early exposure to design through his brother's computer school projects, leading to an internship at Jumia where he discovered the power of data and user research. His career includes impactful projects like Trips (formerly Plenty Waka), where he helped transform public transportation across three countries and contributed to securing $3 million in seed funding. He also led design for Speechify's Audiobooks team, making reading more accessible worldwide. A compelling aspect of Aaron's journey is his focus on creating products that genuinely improve people's lives. Now, as co-founder of Los Hombres, Aaron and his team support founders and startups with design solutions while developing their own products, including Good Skin, a personalized skincare routine builder. With over 13 years of collective experience, they pride themselves on being "best in class" and maintaining close proximity to the problems they're solving. Aaron shares valuable insights for aspiring designers, emphasizing the importance of sharing work publicly and embracing global design opportunities in the age of remote work. While the barrier to entry for UI/UX design might be lower than traditional fields, standing out requires consistent practice, problem-solving skills, and a deep understanding of both design principles and user needs. The conversation also explores the evolving role of designers, with Aaron recommending that designers learn coding skills to better communicate their ideas and potentially become "design engineers." His only career regret? Not learning to code earlier. This episode serves as both an inspiring success story and a practical guide for anyone interested in design, demonstrating how passion, persistence, and a focus on solving real problems can lead to a fulfilling career in tech. __________________________________________________________________ Join Alice as she explores the world of tech and shares impactful stories with guests on My Tech Story Africa! | Achieving Product Design Success with Alison Eyo I RAYNA UI | 24 Jul 2024 | 00:53:54
In this episode of My Tech Story Africa, we sit down with the talented and inspiring Alison Eyo at Rayna UI, a top design firm known for creating stunning and user-friendly interfaces. Rayna UI specializes in delivering innovative design solutions that blend aesthetics with functionality. Their team of expert designers is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of user experience to create impactful digital products. Alison shares her unique journey from a curious child in Lagos to a leading designer. Here’s what to expect: 🔶 From being a standout computer science student, helping her father with his handwritten books, to challenging societal norms, she has always pursued her passion for technology and design. 🔶 Alison emphasizes the power of curiosity, saying, "You need to ask questions, and if you don't ask these questions, you won't get the answers you need. That will then inform your visual or design decisions." 🔶 Reflecting on her childhood, Alison shares, "I have aunties who believe that the woman's room is the kitchen. Every time you're having family functions, you should be cooking, you should be cleaning, which I do anyways, but that's not my identity." This highlights the traditional expectations she faced and overcame. It was a constant struggle to balance my interests and their expectations." 🔶 Alison’s career path is a testament to her resilience and adaptability. From studying medical biochemistry to interning in oil and gas, and finally finding her true calling in design, she has navigated many fields. "I moved from being a graphic designer to a medical student to an oil and gas intern," she recounts with a smile. 🔶 Alison’s story also touches on the challenges of gender bias in technology. She recalls a male classmate who doubted women's abilities to code. "I had a guy in my class say that girls don't know how to code," she remembers. This stereotype didn’t stop her from excelling and pursuing her passion. She adds, "There were always those who believed tech wasn't a field for women, but I knew I belonged." 🔶 Education plays a crucial role in Alison's story. She talks about the impractical nature of studying biochemistry in Nigeria due to inadequate resources and teaching methods. "It was the most impractical course, actually. I don't recommend anybody study biochemistry in Nigeria," she states. This educational disparity can demotivate students and lead to a lack of confidence in their chosen fields. Discover why actually doing design work (not just watching videos) is key to mastering the craft. Learn how being curious and asking the right questions can supercharge your design decisions. Dive into Alison's inspiring journey of navigating societal expectations and carving out a tech career as a woman in Africa. Plus, get the gist on the real world of product design and the big difference between just learning about design and actually being a great designer. __________________ Join Alice as she explores the world of tech and shares impactful stories with guests on My Tech Story Africa! | THE ACCIDENTAL INVESTOR: Turning 400 Euros into 3.5 Million - Joe Kinvi | HoaQ | 19 Jun 2024 | 00:59:43
This episode stars Joe Kinvi, co-founder of HoaQ and founder of Stealth Startup, his story came across not as extraordinary, but universal in its very humanness. Growing up between countries, he recalls feeling unsure of where he fit in. Joe Kinvi is a notable figure in the African tech investment landscape, having transitioned from a background in finance to entrepreneurship and tech investment. He co-founded HoaQ, an investor community focused on backing entrepreneurs and creating scalable businesses for Africa and its diaspora (Empower Africa) (AfriTech XYZ). But even then, Joe's innate curiosity pushed him to explore. I chuckled when he spoke fondly of a wealthy family friend sparking boyhood dreams of success. "Washing that fancy car, I'd imagine what it must be like." At 12, moving to Ireland knowing only French intensified that feeling of not belonging. Yet through daily trips to the library, and bonding with Michael over football, English gradually became less frightening. Hard work and friendship - simple but powerful remedies we all rely on.Academically, Joe thrived. But pursuing accounting purely for its stability left him unfulfilled. "Deep down, I yearned for something more meaningful." Who among us has not questioned our path, with careers often an uncertain journey of self-discovery. Entrepreneurship demanded risks, but creating his fintech platform to bring people together aligned with Joe's spirit of curiosity. Through building community and connections, he found joy and purpose - primal human needs we all strive to fulfill. _________________________________________________ Join Alice as she explores the world of tech and shares impactful stories with guests on "My Tech Story." | JOURNEY TO PRODUCT SUCCESS: Dominic Mulinda's Story of Building Solutions, Overcoming Challenges, and Impacting People | 09 May 2023 | 00:41:57
In this episode of "My Tech Story" hosted by Alice Kanjejo, Dominic Mulinda, the Product Success Lead at fintech company HoneyCoin, shares his journey into product management. Dominic Mulinda previously served as Chief Product Officer at a bootstrapped software development company in Nairobi before joining HoneyCoin. Dominic's tech story began in school, where he walked into the innovation lab and met a computer science major. Together, they built an app called Pigeon to help people easily access delivery services (before they became a big thing). However, the product eventually sunsetted due to low profitability. According to Dominic, building products requires acknowledging the bias that one overconfidently assumes what they can and cannot do. He believes that success in product management comes from understanding critical mistakes that cannot be made and continuously learning. As a venture-backed company, Mulinda joined HoneyCoin with a focus on bringing value and tangible impact to users. He views a product lead's role as ensuring productivity within the team and managing stakeholder relationships. Domnic's advice to those starting in tech is to build a safety net by staying up to date on industry knowledge, seeking powerful partnerships, and stepping outside of their comfort zone. ____________ Join Alice as she explores the world of tech and shares impactful stories with guests on "My Tech Story." | BLACKROCK TO NDOVU: Secrets to Smart Wealth with Radhika Bhachu | 18 Sep 2024 | 01:13:08
In this captivating episode of My Tech Story Africa, we bring you Radhika Bhachu, co-founder of Ndovu, a revolutionary fintech startup transforming financial inclusion across Africa. Radhika shares her incredible journey from corporate finance at BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, to building a wealth management platform tailored for everyday Africans. This episode dives into her personal experiences, offering invaluable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs, tech enthusiasts, and anyone looking to understand how fintech can empower communities through responsible investing. 🔸 Radhika’s Career Path Radhika begins by taking us through her journey from studying mathematics at the University of Nottingham to her early career in finance. After working as an investment consultant advising pension funds, her interpersonal skills led her to BlackRock’s sales team, where she managed major client portfolios and grew her understanding of the global financial landscape. Despite her success abroad, Radhika felt a strong calling to return home to Kenya and build something meaningful in the African market. 🔸 Expanding Access to Global Markets Before Ndovu, most Africans had limited investment options, with traditional asset managers offering only local funds. Ndovu changed this by providing access to global markets and offering diversified funds, including those in sectors like technology, healthcare, and semiconductors. These portfolios help users mitigate risks while earning competitive returns, all through a user-friendly app. 🔸 Speed Over Perfection Radhika emphasizes that in the tech industry, particularly fintech, speed is more important than perfection. She shares key lessons from building Ndovu, such as rapidly testing product ideas, gathering customer feedback, and iterating quickly. Ndovu’s approach to product development focuses on constant validation—testing small features with customers before committing to large-scale development. 🔸Investing Smart: Balancing Risk and Reward Radhika provides valuable advice on managing risk in investment portfolios, explaining how to balance low-risk options like money market funds with higher-risk investments in sectors such as technology. This approach allows users to grow their wealth sustainably while minimizing significant losses. 🔸 Growing Beyond Kenya As Ndovu continues to scale, Radhika shares her vision of expanding the platform beyond Kenya to other African markets. She emphasizes the need for tailored solutions that address the unique financial challenges across the continent, and how Ndovu is building a scalable model that can serve diverse markets while staying true to its mission of financial inclusion. __________________________________________________________________ Join Alice as she explores the world of tech and shares impactful stories with guests on My Tech Story Africa!
