Bijay is from Odisha, one of the mineral rich as well as the most disaster-prone regions in India. From his younger years, Bijay was exposed to social inequalities and discrimination. During his childhood, Bijay used to join his civil servant father, vising the tribal communities exploited by the mining industries. After the end of his higher studies in the UK, Bijay was fortunate to receive a sponsorship to visit 14 African countries in 6 years. This experience strengthened his faith in humanity and the power of local wisdom. Bijay’s foundation work in humanitarianism started during the Odisha Super Cyclone 1999. Since then, Bijay has been leading and managing civil society organisations and networks across Africa, Europe, South Asia & Southeast Asia

As we are celebrating the Earth Day earlier this week, let’s find out from Richard, what Sustainable Fundraising mean? How can we bring both the profit and not-for profit sectors together to reach a common goal for saving our planet?

Richard has over 30 years of fundraising experience for many UK-based charities, like Solar Aid, Action Aid, Farm Africa and Oxfam. Richard also trains on fundraising for charities around the world to turn supporters into advocates, by offering a great experience, by learning from failure and by telling a great story.

Farah Mihlar grew up in Sri Lanka, witnessing the civil war. She then became a journalist, and now a human rights activist working at international policy level, while teaching at Oxford Brookes University. Farah is passionate on advocating minority rights and women's rights, working on conflict prevention, peace building and transitional justice. Farah holds a PhD, where she did an ethnographic field research on political Islam and Islamic religious movements in Sri Lanka. Farah also continues to challenge the concept of decolonisation, and its impact on us in our day to day lives in academia as well as in practice.

Kate Bowen-Evans shares her story of growing up between two cultures in Buruni and England. This helped her to develop empathy and inner resilience to thrive and work in some of the most difficult places like Afghanistan, Palatine, Israel and many other conflict and disaster prone countries. Kate has now moved on from working in disasters and conflict zones to teaching on Humanitarian Practice. Kate’s own daughter's and her brother’s experience of living with disability motivated her to research on Disability Theology and to pursue a PhD in Biblical studies and marginalisation; and working on building leadership in various integrated projects in the Africa region.

Dr. Nafeesur Rahman has been working for nearly 3 decades on raising awareness, designing disability inclusive policies and systems to advocate for the rights of the persons with disability in Bangladesh and across Asia. He believes that to bring changes in policies and to implement them, it is important to have a long-term vision and several back-up plans. We also need to bring along the government and civil society in the same page. He shares many success stories on influencing governments, NGOs and international agencies, on adopting disability inclusive policies and implementing them. However, he believes that we still have a long way to go implement many of these policies for a truly disability inclusive society. If we are passionate and persistent, then we can patiently manage our frustrations and stresses to achieve a supportive environment for all.

প্রতিবন্ধী মানুষের অধিকার উন্নয়নের লক্ষ্যে ড. নাফিসুর রহমান প্রায় তিন দশক ধরে বাংলাদেশ এবং এশিয়াজুড়ে প্রতিবন্ধী ব্যক্তিদের বিষয়ে সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি, তাদের অধিকারের নীতিমালা পরিবর্তন নিয়ে কাজ করছেন। তিনি মনে করেন, নীতিমালা পরিবর্তন এবং বাস্তবায়নের জন্য দীর্ঘমেয়াদি ও স্থায়ী পরিকল্পনা থাকা জরুরি। সরকার, আর সমাজকর্মীদের একই কাতারে নিয়ে আসা জরুরী। তিনি সরকার, এনজিও এবং আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থাকে প্রতিবন্ধী অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক নীতি গ্রহণ এবং তাদের বাস্তবায়নে প্রভাবিত করার ব্যIপারে অনেক সাফল্যের গল্প বলেন I তবে, তিনি বিশ্বাস করেন যে প্রতিবন্ধীর অধিকার ও সমাজে তাদের স্বচ্ছন্দমূলক সহবস্থানের জন্য নীতিমালা বাস্তবায়নের ক্ষেত্রে আমাদের এখনও অনেক দীর্ঘ পথ যেতে হবে। আনন্দ ও ধৈর্য্য নিয়ে একসাথে কাজ করলে হতাশাও কমবে।

Nayoka Martinez-Bäckström currently lives in Bangladesh where she works as First Secretary (Environment & Climate) and Deputy Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden, Dhaka.  Before Bangladesh, she promoted sustainable city planning and development in Asia and Africa. Nayoka was born and raised in the Philippines and considers Sweden her home. Nayoka is also a mother of two twins. In this episode, Nayoka shares her optimism about Bangladesh and Sweden's climate and youth movement, which gives us hope for a more sustainable future.

Zoe Jordan is a researcher and Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP) in Oxford Brookes University. Zoe research looks into forced migration and humanitarianism. She focuses on how displaced populations respond to and manage their displacement in protracted and urban contexts. Zoe started her career working with NGOs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Haiti, leading and supporting humanitarian projects responding to urban displacement, internal displacement, and disaster recovery. She also volunteers with community-based organisations working with asylum-seekers and refugees in Jordan and the UK.

Laila Kondkar, is leading her own child rights based organisation ‘Shishurai Shob’ in Bangladesh. Laila engages people from all walks of life to create a child-sensitive society. Achieving gender equality and social justice remain at the centre of her work. Laila has worked and lived in Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea, Liberia, Australia and England, leading on Child Protection, Child Rights Governance, Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS. She has studied in many well reputed universities including Harvard (USA), Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies (South Africa) and Mahidol University (Thailand). People's resilience, especially the local knowledge and the drive of women and children in many parts of the world, is the driving force or MARS mantra for Laila.

লায়লা খন্দকার বাংলাদেশের একজন উন্নয়নকর্মী। কাজ করেন মূলত শিশু অধিকার নিয়ে। বিভিন্ন আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থার হয়ে বাংলাদেশ ছাড়াও লাইবেরিয়া, পাপুয়া নিউগিনি, মার্কিন যুক্ত্ররাজ্য ও অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় পেশাগত দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন। জনস্বাস্থ্য নিয়ে গবেষণা করেছেন আফ্রিকা সেন্টার ফর হেলথ এন্ড পপুলেশন স্টাডিজ (দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা) এবং মাহিদল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে (থাইল্যান্ড)। তিনি শিশু অধিকার ও উন্নয়ন সংক্রান্ত নানা বিষয়ে পত্র-পত্রিকায় নিয়মিত লেখালেখি করেন। "পাপুয়া নিউগিনি-  স্বর্ণ পাখির দেশ" তার রচিত গ্রন্থ।  তার অনুবাদে প্রখ্যাত লেখক নাইউরার কিছু গল্প প্রকাশিত হয়েছে "স্বপ্নভূমিতে রঙধনু সাপ - অস্ট্রেলীয় আদিবাসী গল্প সংকলন" নামে।তিনি শিশু সংবেদনশীল সমাজ গড়ার উদ্দেশ্য প্রতিষ্ঠিত "শিশুরাই সব" উদ্যোগটির  আহ্বায়ক। তিনি এই পরিবর্তনীয় বিশ্বে  শিশু ও নারী অধিকার অর্জন এবং সবার জন্য বাসযোগ্য একটা সমাজ গড়ায় কাজ করে যেতে আগ্রহী। নানা দেশে  অসংখ্য মানুষ অনেক প্রতিকূলতার মোকাবিলা করে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে-এই বিষয়টি তাকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে। সাধারণ মানুষের জ্ঞান এবং অভিজ্ঞতাকে গুরুত্ব দিয়েই উন্নয়ন কর্মকান্ডের পরিকল্পনা এবং বাস্তবায়ন করা উচিত বলে তিনি মনে করেন।

Sudan has over two decades long history of conflict. Recently 5.5 million people are displaced within and outside to neighbouring countries, as the conflict continues. There is not enough international funding for basic relief supplies like food, shelter and jobs for these displaced people. Sudan has not been in the global news either. People like Godfrey Lokuju, a former Civil Servant from Sudan and now a Humanitarian Coordinator for the United Nations, is voicing on behalf of the forgotten 5.5 million people for giving them the attention that they deserve.

জাকির হোসান বাংলাদেশের একটি তৃণমূল সংস্থা "কৃষকের স্বরের" সভাপতি। ছোটবেলা থেকে বরিশালের ছোট্ট এক গ্রামে শিমুলভাঙা নামের এক নদীর পাড়ে প্রকৃতির ভেতর দিয়ে বড় হওয়া একজন মানুষ যেন নিজের পুরোটা জীবন কাটিয়ে দিলেন সেই প্রকৃতির ভেতরেই। প্রকৃতি আর কৃষির জন্য অগাধ ভালোবাসা থেকেই তিনি কৃষক ও কৃষির জন্য কাজ করা শুরু করেন। আর সেই কাজের কান্ডারি হিসেবে তিনি বেছে নেন স্কুলের ছাত্র ছাত্রীদের। দূর্যোগের সময় দ্রুত আশ্রয়কেন্দ্রে পৌঁছানোর জন্য ব্রিজ তৈরী করা থেকে শুরু করে সিডরে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হওয়া গাছপালা রক্ষা করার মত অতি সাধারণ দেখতে লাগা অসাধারণ কাজগুলো করেছেন নিজের মনের অসীম আনন্দ নিয়ে। মূলত কৃষি ব্যবস্থার উন্নয়ন আর পরিবেশ উন্নয়ন ই ছিল তার মূলমন্ত্র। এরই পথ ধরে তিনি দীর্ঘস্থায়ী কৃষি উন্নয়নের জন্য বিভিন্ন বৈশ্বিক নেতাদের সাথে যোগাযোগ করেন যাতে করে তিনি জাতীয় কৃষিক্ষেত্রেও অবদান রাখতে পারেন। এই পর্বে আমরা পরিবেশ উন্নয়নে জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক দাতা সংস্থাগুলোর নীতিগুলো নিয়েও কিছুটা সহজ ধারণা পাবো। Zakir Hossain is leading a grassroot organisation 'Farmers Voice/ Krishoker Shor'. Zafar Alam is a former civil servant shares his story of growing up during the independance war of Bangladesh. Zafar alam helped many climate-displaced landless families to restart their lives, by allocating them a new piece of land in the remotest parts of the country. He was active during the COVID-19 pandemic keeping the port authrorities and the hospitals running, training future civil servants. Zafar Alam now teached at several universites in Bangladesh. এপিসোড ৯ বিজয় দিবসের বোনাস - জাফর আলমের মুক্তিযুদ্ধের স্মৃতি আর দেশসেবার গল্প: জাফর আলম বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশের একজন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় অধ্যাপক এবং প্রাক্তন সিভিল সার্ভিস কর্মকর্তা। বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের স্মৃতি আর তা থেকে উৎসরিত দেশপ্রেম তাকে উদ্ভুদ্ধ করে সরকারের হয়ে কাজ করার জন্য। এরপর আর কখনো থেমে থাকেন নি তিনি। দেশসেবার মানসিকতা থেকেই বিভিন্ন পদে কাজ করতে হয়েছিল তাকে, যার মধ্যে তৃণমূল পর্যায়ের ভূমিহীন মানুষ ও অটিজমদের নিয়ে কাজ বিশেষভাবে উল্লেখযোগ্য। বাংলাদেশ সরকারের সহায়তায় তিনি “চর উন্নয়ন ও বসতি স্থাপন প্রকল্প” নামে একটি প্রকল্পে কাজ করেন, যার মাধ্যমে তিনি অসংখ্য ভূমিহীন মানুষকে কৃষিজমি ও পুকুর প্রদানের মাধ্যমে কর্মসংস্থানের সুব্যবস্থা করেন। এরই ধারিবাহিকতায় তিনি ভূমিকা রাখেন সেইসব ভূমিতে বন্যা নিয়ন্ত্রণ ও রাস্তাঘাট বিনির্মানে। এছাড়াও লিঙ্গ বৈষম্য দূরীকরণে এবং নারী অধিকার বাস্তবায়নের লক্ষ্যে তিনি স্বামী স্ত্রী দুইজনকে ভূমির মালিক করার উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করেন। কোভিড-১৯ বা করোনা চলাকালীন সময়ে তিনি চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরে কাজ করেন৷ বন্দরের কাজকে চলমান রাখতে এবং বন্দর কর্মীদের সুরক্ষার জন্য তার নেতৃত্বেই সেই সময়ে বন্দরের অভ্যন্তরেই হাসপাতালের একটি অংশকে কোভিড সেন্টার হিসেবে চালু করা হয়। এছাড়াও চট্টগ্রামে অটিজম ভিত্তিক সেবা চালুকরণে তিনি অগ্রগামী ভূমিকা রাখেন। অটিজম সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধিকরণে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর অনুমোদনক্রমে বর্তমানে তার নেতৃত্বে আরো বেশ কয়েকটি সংস্থা সহ চট্টগ্রামে একটি নয় তলা ভবন নির্মানাধীন রয়েছে। যা ভবিষ্যত সময়ে দেশের উন্নয়নে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখবে বলে আশা করা যায়।

আমাদের পৃথিবী প্রতিদিন উষ্ণ থেকে উষ্ণতর হয়ে উঠছে। আর আমরা শীঘ্রই মঙ্গলগ্রহে পালানোর কল্পনা করছি। ‘মঙ্গলগ্রহে পালানোর মিশন মার্স’ দ্বারা প্রতারিত হবেন না! আসুন আমাদের এই বাস্তব পৃথিবীতে ফিরে আসি! আমরা এই পৃথিবী কে কিভাবে শান্তিপূর্ণ আর বসবাসের উপযোগী করবো তাই ভেবে দেখি। আমি ফারহাত আফজাল আপনাদের আমার মঙ্গল মন্ত্র বা My MARS Mantra পডকাস্টে এ স্বাগত জানাই। ইংরেজিতে MARS শব্দটির সংক্ষিপ্তরূপ হচ্ছে, Motivation কিংবা প্রেরণা, Action কিংবা কাজ, Reflection কিংবা প্রতিফলন, এবং Sustainability কিংবা দীর্ঘ স্থায়িত্ব। এই পডকাস্টে আমরা সবাইকে ৪ টি প্রশ্ন করবো, প্রথমত, কে অথবা কোন ঘটনা আপনাকে কাজের ক্ষেত্রে সবচেয়ে বেশি উৎসাহ দেয়? দ্বিতীয়ত, আপনার এই উৎসাহ কিভাবে আপনাকে সামনে এগিয়ে যেতে সাহায্য করে? তৃতীয়ত, আপনার কাজের অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে আপনি ও আমরা কি শিখতে পারি? সব শেষে, আমাদের এই অস্থির পৃথিবীকে শান্ত আর নিরাপদ রাখার জন্য আমাদের কি করা উচিত? আর আপনার নিজের মঙ্গল মন্ত্র কি? এই প্রশ্নগুলো আমরা শ্রোতাদের এবং পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশের মানুষকে করবো যারা দুর্যোগ ও উন্নয়নের সাথে জড়িত। আমার মঙ্গল মন্ত্র পডকাস্টটি টি একটি পাঁচ পর্বের সিরিজ। প্রথম পর্বে আমরা দুর্যোগের গল্প শুনবো। এখানে আমরা এমন কিছু মানুষের সাথে কথা বলবো, যারা পেশাগত ভাবে দুর্যোগ নিয়ে কাজ করছেন। আর জানবো, যে এসব দুর্যোগের মূল কারণ কি? দ্বিতীয় পর্বটি আরো জটিল! এই পর্বে আমরা প্রতিদিনের দুর্যোগ, যা আমাদের মানুষেরই তৈরী, তাই নিয়ে আলাপ করবো। যুদ্ধ বিধ্বস্ত মানুষ কিভাবে শুদু মাত্র তাদের দৃঢ় ইচ্ছাশক্তির কারণে এগিয়ে যায়, আমরা সেই গল্প শুনবো। তৃতীয় পর্বে, আমরা উন্নয়নের গল্প শুনবো। যে সব দেশকে আমরা উন্নত মনে করি,সেখানে কি হচ্ছে আর অন্যান্য উন্নয়নশীল দেশে কি হচ্ছে তাই ঘুরে দেখবো। এরপর আমরা একটু বিরতি নিবো। আমরা চাইবো আপনারা এসব বিষয় নিয়ে ভেবে দেখবেন, আর আপনার নিজের মঙ্গল মন্ত্র খুঁজে পাবেন। চতুর্থ পর্বে, আমরা বাংলাদেশের গল্প শুনবো, যেখানে দুর্যোগ এবং উন্নয়ন একই সুতোয় গাঁথা। যেখানে সংকট, ভোগবাদ, দুর্নীতি এবং জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন আমাদের তথাকিত উন্নয়ন পরিকল্পনার অংশ। আমরা বাংলাদেশ থেকে কি শিক্ষা নিবো? যা বিশ্ব ব্যাপী সবাইকে জানাতে পারি? সবশেষে আমরা আমাদের নিজেদের মঙ্গল মন্ত্র আর আমাদের পৃথিবীর জন্য মঙ্গল কামনা করে এই পডকাস্ট শেষ করবো। প্রিয় শ্রোতা, আপনার মঙ্গল মন্ত্রটি কি? কোন বিষয়টি আপনাকে সাড়া দিচ্ছে? আপনার কোনো প্রশ্ন আর মতামত জানাতে এই ঠিকানায় ইমেইল করুন mymarsmantra@gmail.com ধন্যবাদ

Farah Kabir is an activist from Bangladesh and has led the world development stage to amplify voices against injustice. Jordan Oster works for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Authority (MEMA). He shares his stories of dealing with day-to-day disasters and how it feels to help people in times of distress. Jordan is concerned that the intensity of climate-induced disasters is increasing all over the United States of America (USA), from heavy snowfall in California, and ice storms in Texas to an increased number of intense floods and storms in Massachusetts.

Rumana Kabir starts My MARS mantra podcast to spread stories from changemakers she has met throughout her career in disasters and development. She was inspired by the authors of 'Story Listening project' and wanted to create a platform for people to listen to each other's stories from around the world. Her journey began in Bangladesh, where she witnessed the disparities between her own privileged life and the lives of street children. Rumana became interested in disaster risk management after hearing her grandfather's story of the 1970s cyclone. During her diverse professional career, as an architect, aid worker, international development consultant; and now as a civil servant and academic, she feels that the root causes of problems are often personal, cultural and systemic; not just technical solution can solve all the problems of this world. The solutions should focus on policies grounded from people's insights. Rumana shared 'Battling the Storm' by Architect Bashirul Haq, and her own work, 'Post-Cyclone Sidr Family Shelter Construction in Bangladesh Documentation of Plans and Processes' as important pieces of work, where peoples' insights on resilient housing solutions are highlighted. Arwin Solaksono, shares his story of rebuilding Aceh, in Indonesia that was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. This tsunami affected 14 countries and killed 240,000 people, mostly Indonesians. When he was invited by an aid agency to advise them in rebuilding Aceh, he was moved by the emptiness caused by the Tsunami. This changed Arwin's career from an Engineer to a Shelter & Settlement Practitioner, now working worldwide. Tsunami also brought a big change in the lives of people in Aceh who were living with conflict for over 29 years. It brought peace to the region as well as many aid agencies' arrival impacted the culture, economy, and environment. Arwin shares his insights as an outsider in Aceh; as an Indonesian building their own expertise to tackle one disaster after another; and as an international advisor supporting rebuilding after the earthquakes in Nepal and Turkiye.

Rumana welcomes her post-grad students, Daniel and Simon, to share their stories of growing up in a turbulent time in Uganda - how they helped people affected by conflict; and how conflict, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic are all interconnected. Daniel and Simon will surely inspire you to think twice, about how you can make a difference from your own position, as a lawyer, as an aid worker, as a project manager or simply as a member of the public who wants to know how displaced people thrive, with a little help from people like Daniel and Simon. Daniel is a lawyer, who opened his own organisation with his friends, to provide legal aid support to displaced people. He soon realised that by putting people and local agencies in the driving seat, he can change the way the humanitarian and development sector works. Simon worked closely with refugees to help them integrate socially, with the help of local government, non-government organisations and the United Nations. He is passionate about reducing the impact of climate change and shared his first-hand experience of COVID-19 pandemic.

Rumana Kabir invites Ian Davis to look back at his 50-year long career in the field of disaster risk reduction and recovery. Rumana and Ian have one thing in common, that is the 1970s cyclone in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) that drew them to similar career paths. Ian first volunteered to help his friends to produce awareness raising materials titled 'Just Another Disaster' on the 70's cyclone, for a newly established charity Tear Fund. And Rumana was moved by the story that her grand-dad told her. Let's find out more on Ian's childhood memory of his house being bombed during World War II, his lifelong dedication in disaster risk reduction and his passion to cherish culture, community spirit and architecture. Professor Ian Davis, started as practicing architect for twelve years, then spent twenty years lecturing in the School of Architecture in Oxford Brookes University (formerly Oxford Polytechnic). From the early 1970's he embarked on a new career studying and advising the UN and Governments on Shelter following Disasters and Disaster Risk Management, involving travel to over 45 countries. Ian became a member of the UK's National Committee for Risk Reduction throughout the 1990s. In 1996 he received the UN Sasakawa Award for his work on disaster prevention. Ian is an accomplished watercolour artist, writing and lecturing about Oxford and the UKs rich historical architecture and landscape. Ian continues to spread his wisdom as a visiting professor in several universities around the world. Yasmin, Saquib and Sonia are proud community architects changing the lives of thousands of slum dwellers in Bangladesh. They have amplified the voices of the marginalised poor people in city planning and policy-making.

These young architects were inspired by the vision of Professor Yunus, to see a poverty-free Bangladesh. Their vision is to build a slum-free Bangladesh. And they are already working towards achieving this vision, by working in the slums of Bangladeshi on 'participatory housing, settlement and infrastructure planning.

Yasmin Ara is an architect, academic and development practitioner specialised in housing policies. She teaches on Housing and Development at BRAC University, and did her PhD from Lancaster University, UK, on low-income settlement policies in Bangladesh and India.

Nazmus Saquib is an architect, specialised in sustainable housing, infrastructure and urban design. He has led large-scale community-led infrastructure upgrading projects for the the Government and non-government agencies.

Sharmin Sonia is a climate resilient housing practitioner. She has worked with the United Nations and National Housing Authority on land tenure issues and participatory planning. She is now researching on climate adaptive housing in coastal Bangladesh.

Professor Nabeel Hamdi is a pioneering architect, introducing participatory action planning and development agenda in designing our cities. This episode showcases how built environment practitioners can play a ‘developmental’ role in placemaking. Nabeel was born in Afghanistan and is of Iraqi origin. He started his school in the UK and was trained as an architect at the Architectural Association in London. Nabeel then worked for Greater London Council on social housing, applying participatory design process, that enabled homeowners to actively negotiate their needs to the local authorities. He then taught in many architectural schools worldwide including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Oxford Brookes University. Nabeel was influenced by 3 architects - John Habraken, Colin Ward and John Turner, who shaped his approach to development practice.

Nabeel has written many influential books, such as  Housing Without Houses (IT Publications, 1995), The Placemaker's Guide to Building Community (Earthscan, 2010), Small Change (Earthscan, 2004), co-author of Making Micro Plans (IT Publications, 1988) and Action Planning for Cities (John Wiley and Sons, 1997), and edited the collected volumes Educating for Real (IT Publications, 1996) and Urban Futures (IT Publications, 2005).

Nabeel also won the prestigious UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour for his work on Community Action Planning.

Nabeel MARS mantra is ‘providing’, ‘enabling’, ‘adapting’ and ‘sustaining’ (P.E.A.S), suggesting these four inter-related sets of responsibility intrinsic to the art of practice in development.

Farhat Afzal studied architecture to broaden her horizon and to think outside the box. Farhat also writes about the thoughts that goes through young minds, including masculinity, our day to day, urban hurdle of moving in our streets, to quarter life crisis faced by young people regarding key decisions in their lives. Now she is using her critical thinking to question how we were taught following colonial and then a modern style, heavily influenced by the west. Farhat is now pursuing a PhD in architecture at the University of Cincinnati and is also baffled by how unsustainable the modern American lifestyle is!

Priti’s passion for working in the slums of India with her dad, encouraged her to dedicate her engineering career to improve the lives of people, by providing quality infrastructure across Asia, Africa and the UK. Priti has been awarded as one of the top 50 women in engineering as well as the top 100 academics for policy making. Priti holds many influential positions, as the Director of Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, as the founder of Engineering for International Development Research Centre, and several charity trustee roles. Priti also got invited to present the importance of investing in sustainable infrastructure to the UK parliament. Shahriar Caesar Rahman, is passionate about saving wildlife in Bangladesh. As a child, growing up in New York city, he volunteered to save the urban animals there. This inspired him to form his own charity ‘Creative Conservation Alliance’. Caesar has been working patiently for over 15 years to bring changes to the mindsets and policies on wildlife conservation.  He is a champion for community based conservation, and won many prestigious awards worldwide. As we modernise and build new cities, we should not forget to make space for other species and let nature heal our planet.

Michèle Young has over two decades of experience as an architect, in the UK and Poland, and as a humanitarian and international development practitioner. Michèle advised and supported teams worldwide to deliver best practice in emergency shelter, housing reconstruction and social infrastructure (re)construction in both conflict and environmental disasters in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific.

 

Now Michèle is the Development Coordination Manager, for Tower Hamlet, a local authority in London. In this role she is offering innovative and practical solutions to tackling the negative impacts of construction on residents and businesses and supporting a move toward a Circular Economy for the built environment.

Abdul Kalek's story will inspire you to not seek for status but to be honest for ones own peace of mind. Khaleq has been a driver throughout his career, starting by driving for the East-Pakistan (now Bangladesh) Regiment (EPR) before the independence war of 1971. He shares his vivid memories of near death experiences on how he felt as a young man during the war. And most importantly, how he refrained from immoral and alluring opportunities that was offered to him during the chaos of post-liberation law and order breakdown. Abdul Khaleq remains to be one of the un-sung heroes of Bangladesh, who did not obtain any 'Freedom fighter certificate', which many people claimed and took advantage of, despite not being a true freedom fighter.

Tanvir grew up in Bangladesh and left for the United States at a young age, where he trained himself as a journalist. He shares his views of growing up within the multicultural and inclusive American society. Now many Bangladeshis and others from immigrant backgrounds are excelling in their career worldwide. The key to this is to have a strong self-belief and to adapt to a new culture. Tanvir is now settled in Bangladesh, embracing the challenges and seeing many opportunities to report Bangladesh's news to the world.

Listen to my wise Civil Servant colleague Keith Thorpe, who has worked for the UK government for 50 years. Keith shares how he worked in the age of no internet, to managing data on consulting for Heathrow Airport's new terminal, to many other notable work in the government, for which he was rewarded OBE, an honour from the Queen. Keith also shares his academic research experience in Iran and now currently renovating is family cottage that was damaged by flood. Keith comes from a very humble background and wanted to become a farmer. However, his craving for knowledge and his passion for books enabled him to be a dedicated civil servant for so long.

Since then, many humanitarian workers have sacrificed their lives, wellbeing and families to voice the voiceless and to provide basic human dignity to millions of people suffering from war, and other disasters. Although a career in the UN sounds very exciting and lucrative, it comes with the price,which we cannot see form outside.

He is tirelessly working to engage young people in environmental protection and to transform every district of the country into a greener space.On the occasion of World Environment Day, under his leadership, tree planting, anti-plastic pollution human chains, and awareness campaigns were organized simultaneously in all 64 districts.
