RAY GILMAN Interview | Minnesota Rock Guitarist Supreme26 Mar 202400:34:18

A veteran of the Minnesota Music scene, Ray has recorded 20 CD's (latest is "Wisdom"), played thousands of live shows, and produced CD's for other artists in his own recording studio. A multi -instrumentalist Ray sings, plays acoustic and electric guitars, and keyboards. Ray is heavily influenced by guitarists Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, David Gilmour, Robin Trower, The Beatles and too many others to list.

Ray started playing guitar at 11 years old and his high school band Crossfire in the mid 70’s became an instant hit booking many gigs even when no one in the band owned a car. They had to be creative to get transportation to the gigs. In the late 70’s and early 80’s Ray played with the local hard rock group Hotash. A six piece group that started with nothing and with persistence owned their own large sound and light system and bus to tour the upper Midwest. Ray’s house and band headquarters in St. Paul Park hosted legendary parties and jam sessions. After Hotash Ray did a stint as a guitar slinger playing with a variety of bands and jamming with blues legend Mojo Buford. In the late 80’s Ray joined Compass a local 5 piece progressive rock band. They released the CD Broken Man (Ray’s first CD) in 1991. After Compass disbanded Ray bought his own Tascam 8 track reel to reel recording system and released his first solo CD Out Of Sight Out Of Mind in 1994 which has now become a collector’s item. Ray got the live one man band concept after attending a Todd Rundgren concert and began assembling the backing tracks in his home studio.

Drummer John Blackwell (Prince and the NPG, Cameo, Patti Labelle)02 Mar 202200:49:15

Phenomenal drummer John Blackwell was a member of Prince and the NPG, Cameo and Patti Labelle. The Berklee College of Music grad also had stellar solo records. I miss my friend John Blackwell and was honored when he called me one night and asked me if I wanted to hear some of his upcoming record "4ever Jia". I said sure and thought he would play 20 seconds of each cut. However, John played each track through and stopped several times mid-song to relate everything going on with each song. I was honored but it was a four hour phone call. Hehehe. Listen in when John Blackwell stopped by our show in 2010 months later to talk about the John Blackwell Project, touring with Prince and the NPG and much more.

Grammy Nominated Guitar Virtuoso Raul Midon24 Jan 202200:20:23

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón is on an undeniable roll. After GRAMMY® Award nominations for his two previous Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group releases – Bad Ass & Blind and If You Really Want, each for Best Jazz Vocal Album – he returns with his 11th studio album and fourth for the label: The Mirror, to be released March 13, 2020. The Mirror finds Midón breaking new ground for himself, including two entrancing solo spoken-word pieces (“If I Could See” and “One Day Without War”). The album also features studio meetings with such veteran jazz colorists as vibraphonist Joe Locke (“A Certain Café”), as well as a songwriting collaboration with top pianist Gerald Clayton, “Deep Dry Ocean.” Another highlight is the road-weary jazz ballad “Cold Cuts and Coffee,” while title track “The Mirror” beguiles with its easy tropical groove, lyrical sophistication and Midón’s flowing electric guitar. As National Public Radio set the stage before his captivating edition of its “Tiny Desk Concert” broadcast: “Raul Midón lives in a world of sound. Blind since birth, Midón’s interpretation of his surroundings is borderless. He sings with the passion of the best classic soul singers, and his instrumental chops stand alongside the most accomplished jazz musicians.”

Along with his 11 studio albums as a solo artist, Midón – dubbed “an eclectic adventurist” by People magazine – has collaborated with such heroes as Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers, along with contributing to records by Queen Latifah and Snoop Dogg and the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s She Hate Me. A native of New Mexico who now lives in Maryland after years in New York, Midón has earned acclaim the world over, with a fanbase that stretches from San Francisco to India, Amsterdam to Tokyo. Marveling over his live performances, The New York Times has called Midón “a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus.” He recently performed in a special Homecoming Week music series at his alma mater, the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. He was surprised onstage with the school’s most prestigious honor, the Distinguished Alumni Award. Frost’s dean said of the 1990 graduate: “Raul Midón truly personifies what a student at our school can achieve. It’s a thrill to be able to honor Raul’s extraordinary talent and exemplary accomplishments.”

94 East (Prince, Minneapolis Sound) Interview06 Jan 202200:44:44

Pepé Willie's band – 94 East – will always be remembered as the band that gave the young Prince Rogers Nelson his first studio experience – let's face it, a good enough reason to be remembered. What's often overlooked is the skill and talent of Willie's ensemble and the influence it had on the developing 'Minneapolis Sound' – not to mention the influence it had on the developing Prince.“ – Quote from Snapper Music

94 EAST was originally formed in the 70s by Pepé Willie. The group was named after Interstate 94; and “East” acknowledges the connection between Pepé’s roots in Brooklyn, NY, and Minneapolis. Pepé was raised in a family of singers and musicians and learned the business of music in the 60s working with his Uncle, Clarence Collins, founding member of Little Anthony & The Imperials – 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Little Anthony and the Imperials were at the height of their career with hits like Shimmy, Shimmy, Koko Bop; Going Out of My Head; and Tears On My Pillow topping both the R&B and pop charts. Pepé watched and listened, absorbing everything he could about the business and the making of hit songs. Pepé hung out with the likes of the Temptations and the Miracles, the Supremes, Chubby Checker, Marvin Gaye, and many others. He then began writing and recording on his own. It was this experience and knowledge that he brought with him to Minneapolis.

Pepé moved to Minneapolis in 1974 and met Marcy Ingvoldstad, and Kristie Lazenberry. Marcy and Kristie were singers and started working with Pepé doing background vocals and writing. Together with Wendell Thomas (bass), Dale Alexander (drums), Pierre Lewis (keyboards), and Pepe’ on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, the first iteration of 94 East was born. Later, Andre’ Lewis (lead guitar) joined the group and Dale was replaced with Bobby Rifkin (later known as Bobby “Z”, drummer for Prince’s band, The Revolution). Currently, 94 East is comprised of the three core members – Pepe’, Marcy and Kristie.

While working on 94 East’s demo, Pepe’ started working closely with his then-wife’s cousin, Prince (Rogers Nelson) and his band, Grand Central (Andre’ Cymone, Morris Day, William Dowdy, and Linda Anderson). Pepe’ hired Prince to record on 94 East’s tracks, known historically as the Cookhouse Five. PMI’s behind the scenes presence and significant contributions to the development of the Minneapolis music scene had a profound effect on the birth and consequent growth of the Minneapolis Sound and it’s part in American music history.

94 East released Minneapolis Genius 94 East featuring Prince; The Historical Recordings in 1985 on Hot Pink Records. In 1995, 94 East released an 2-CD set on the UK label, Charly Records, titled, Symbolic Beginning. The songs from this 2 CD-set have been licensed and sold all around the world giving 94 East an international following. In 2008, 94 East released 94 East featuring 10:15 & Fortune Teller Remix with Prince on Guitar on their label, Reo Deo (digitally distributed by Entertainment One). Two songs from this CD, 10:15 and Fortune Teller, were originally recorded at Sound 80 Recording Studios in Minneapolis. In 2010, 94 East released The Cookhouse Five, the original 1975 session, This 35th anniversary commemorative CD not only reflects the incredible talent of the young musicians of 94 East, but also the incredible talents of a 17-year old Prince. Most recently (2011), 94 East released the single, Leaving You Behind.

94 East’s music is characterized as positive, upbeat R&B/Pop with Hip Hop and Rock, appealing to a wide variety of listeners. They currently perform both track shows and full band shows. Their band includes Matt (“Doctor”) Fink on keyboards -- former Prince and The Revolution keyboardist, Marshall Charloff on guitar – an accomplished performer and songwriter who plays many instruments, a young talented drummer -- Brandon Johnson, and Ace Mack, a veteran bass player.

Saxophone Dreams: Johnny Ferreira's Journey from Punk to Rock Royalty05 Jan 202200:18:09

International touring and recording artist Johnny Ferreira combines style and boundless energy in his performances throughout Europe, United States, and Canada.

His infatuation with the saxophone began late in high school when he was 17. “It was the sound that attracted me,” he recalls. “It’s the instrument that closest resembles the human voice.” By 19, he was wailing on the sax. “I was impatient to get a good sound and two years seems like a long time when you’re a kid,” he reflects.

Johnny’s professional career started in 1980 being active in his local Vancouver music scene playing the clubs, casual gigs, and joining The Pointed Sticks who were recording and touring nationally at the time. They came from Vancouver’s Punk scene so Johnny was asked by many of the bands to record with them, most notably DOA.

His music education continued at the University of British Columbia where he pursued a music degree but withdrew a year early as he hooked up with still unknown blues rocker Colin James. “I felt more comfortable on stage than in a classroom”. Ferreira was recruited as an original member of James’ band, featured soloist on stage and in the studio and co-arranging the swingin’ “Little Big Band album”.

A whirlwind 11 years passed quickly, touring with some of history’s most profound rock names, including The Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, ZZ Top, Keith Richards, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He left Colin’s band in 1998 to pursue his solo career, discovering new fans and excitement fronting his own band, which was in demand constantly. Performing, recording, and teaching continues and his 4th CD “Rock & Roll Saxophonist” being the most “sax-heavy” recording yet.

Many of Ferreira’s songs have weaved themselves into Movies and television. His unmistakable sax sound is featured on many other CDs besides his own, many of which have reached gold and platinum status. He stays rooted to his sax, flirting with many sounds from swing to rock to pop. He continues to write, perform, and educate.

Cleveland P. Jones Captivating Soulful Voice03 Jan 202200:13:27

It's rare for the world to experience artistry that is so genuine, so heartfelt...so captivating. Welcome to the world of singer/songwriter, Cleveland P. Jones. He is the true embodiment of soul and jazz. When asked about his future in the music industry, he stated “my mission is longevity, not instant fame. I’ve learned by example and experience not to rush a good thing." This native of a little town named "North" in South Carolina, started his artistic voyage at an early age under the tutelage of his mother and grandfather who were the lead singers in church. "My mother truly molded me as a singer by watching her sing in the choir and the songs she's played while we cleaned up at home."

A graduate of two prestigious institutions, Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, Cleveland studied music and theater. From touring with the Morehouse College Glee to playing roles on the stages of Berklee and Spelman College, Cleveland brings a plethora of artistic expressions to the table. While studying at Morehouse, he instantly fell in love with soul and jazz music. "I remember the first time I heard the voice of Little Jimmy Scott...I was sold", he reflects. "It was a voice like mine, and I no longer felt so awkward because of my vocal timbre and vocal expression." During his matriculation at Morehouse, Cleveland discovered many jazz and soul greats like Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway, and Aretha Franklin who deeply influenced his sound and approach to the art of vocal phrasing.

In 2013, Cleveland released his debut album, "Ace of Hearts" and won the SoulTracks.com's New Artist of The Year award. He also had the honor of opening for soul legend Chaka Khan and was the special guest of The Shadowboxers. His original song, "Don't Leave Me" from his debut album was a major feature in the 2016 Netflix release, "ECHO PARK". In 2017-2018, Cleveland was privileged to tour many cities through out Eastern Europe as a solo artist. Currently, Cleveland is expanding his brand by writing and recording soul, jazz and house music and continues performing nationally and locally. Simply put, Cleveland is committed to deliver unadulterated, timeless music. He is well on his way to higher places, but will always be grounded in his quest to heal souls one song at a time.

Jazz-Funk Fusion Guitarist Carl Burnett Part 109 Feb 202400:19:54

Carl Burnett is an example of a great guitarist who thrives without the fuel of ego. Carl is able to appear on every A-list without having the negative attitude that often comes with that position. He is a guitarist with a long list of credits. He has recorded and played with many artists, including David Sanborn and Branford Marsalis. Carl’s resume is a “Who’s Who”, but you won’t find him boasting about it. Carl Burnett is one of the few guitarists who can be described as both “Zen-like”, and “Hendrixian” all in the same sentence. But that’s precisely the complexity that makes him unique. Burnett transcends the instrument and into a realm where pure worship is what defines the moment. Burnett is a musician who can jump from a fiery jazz/rock solo to a unfettered rhythm groove in funk; he’s able to play leapfrog musical styles. Burnett’s greatest advantage is his ability to listen. Because he is able to listen and know when to speak, the silences are tangible. This is a rare example of musicianship. One guitarist said admiringly about Burnett’s music, “Carl’s play is like a Japanese haiku. It can paint a beautiful picture with just a few notes.” Burnett not only respects the instrument that he depends on, but thrives in those moments that are free from limitations. His musical career reached its peak when he was a member of Buckshot LeFonque, a band that featured Bradford Marsalis. “Because there were no musical borders,” he said. It would seem that this would be easy. But, you need to really know yourself and your instrument. His quest to learn his instrument has led him to share the stage with many different musicians around the globe. Carl continues to build on the songwriting and production credits he has hosted by award-winning artists like Boney James and Larry Carlton. His music can be heard on “Extra” as well as “Celebrity Justice”. This musician will help him continue his quest to learn from his instrument and those around him. He will continue to be guided by the divining rod of his guitar towards his core drive to add “sensibility” and “groove”. Carl is in the house, that means the groove is just beginning.
