#43: Three Vocal Delay Tricks to Improve Your Mix06 Sep 202200:06:06

A stereo delay with a 1/4 or 1/8 note delay on one side and 1/4 or 1/8 note triplet note on the other side provides movement along with depth.

For a quick vocal effect, set up a mono 220ms delay with a couple of repeats.

To simulate a vocal double, use a 1/16 note delay and then modulate it so it slowly raises or lowers in pitch.

#42: How to Write Music Across Different Time Zones | Year of the Fall30 Aug 202200:55:49

Year of the Fall is a synthwave/retrowave band that blends nostalgia for the music and movies of the 1980s with the electronic melancholy of modern life.

YOTF features German musician Philipp Kappestein and American writer/vocalist Dan Vaccaro. The two met while living in a volunteer community in Boston, Massachusetts, and within days began making music together. They spent their 9-5 working in the program’s homeless shelter, and in the evenings recorded music on an old computer, originally using a headset microphone to capture vocals. Their first album came under the band name For Tomorrow, and featured acoustic folk-pop music inspired by the likes of Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Counting Crows, Pearl Jam, and others.

The group’s second album, Love on a Dying Planet, is an eight-song cycle – released one track at a time – that tells the story of star-crossed lovers who discover passion and peril at the end of the world. The band released the first single from the record in May 2022. Fans can follow along with each new segment of the story (and find its corresponding song) at the YOTF’s website (https://www.yearofthefall.com/love-on-a-dying-planet-2022).

#27: Top Tips to Create a Unique Recording | Aisle 9 Music03 May 202201:23:59

Aisle 9's career has spanned over 3 decades working in the UK as a producer. Born way back in the….wait for it…Summer of 69. Worked with hundreds of artists from all genres, starting with the trance, rave, and festival scene of the late '90s and moving through to playing in guitar-driven original bands in the alt-rock and grunge scene of the early '00s.

Now partly driven on by the pandemic, he has finally returned to producing his music once again. His influences are as diverse as Mitch Murder, New Order, Tangerine Dream, The Midnight, Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, Orbital, and William Orbit to name but a few.

An accomplished songwriter, sound engineer, and musician, his music style incorporates lush synths, filtered funky guitars, treated samples, text-to-speech voices, vocoders, driving bass, and killer grooves. There are electronica, synthwave, synthpop, ambient, and  EDM elements here.

#26: What Makes a Performance Successful? | Daniel Hugh19 Apr 202200:57:25

Daniel Hugh is an 80s-inspired synth-pop producer and artist from Northampton, England. After spending years in rock bands, Daniel embarked on a solo project in 2020 resulting in an acoustic guitar-led EP titled 'Stories Involving Time'.

'Inspired by Immortals' was Daniel Hugh's second self-penned solo release and was a marked change in music direction. It could be described as a cross between Dreamwave and synth-pop. With 80s influences from Cyndi Lauper, Phil Collins and Def Leppard, the synthwave-inspired instrumentation is fused with contemporary songwriting and structure, along with big choruses to create a dynamic and emotive listening experience.

The 5-track EP explores the internal battle between our demons and their better angels, and at times fixates on a desire to find a deeper meaning behind our existence. Mental health, anxiety and pillars of support are recurring themes throughout the EP.

Daniel Hugh is signed to Retro Reverb Records and is currently working on his next EP, which will be out in 2022.

#24: How to Write Successful Synth Pop Music | Maxthor22 Mar 202200:43:10

Coming out of Spain in a haze of neon lights, electro-synth pulses, and eighties rock brilliance is Maxthor, a three-piece with a unique and original retro-futuristic sound.

Forging a broad spectrum of influences, Maxthor takes the irresistible echoes of eighties giants like Phil Collins, Billy Idol, and Survivor and filters them through their lens of synth-driven futurist nostalgia. The results are intoxicating; insanely catchy songs, beautifully crafted and drowned in the electronic atmosphere and synthpop hooks. There’s metal, Italo-disco, and retro aesthetics in the mix - it’s a cocktail of sounds that makes Maxthor a truly unique proposition.

#143: The Art of DIY Mastering: Tips and Strategies to Master Your Own Music with Eric Mitchell21 May 202400:38:03

Forget what you know about mastering music... Have you ever wondered: can I master my music or can I master music at home? Maybe you're seeking answers to topics: mastering music fundamentals, the basic steps of mastering, what is the use of mastering, what is mastering a song, or maybe just what is mastering music. Then check out EP 143 of the Inside The Mix podcast.

Unlock the mysteries of home studio mastering with the guidance of Eric Mitchell from Eric Mitchell Audio—your personal mentor in this sonic adventure. We deconstruct the myth that only a high-end studio can produce stellar mastering outcomes, as Eric highlights the pivotal role of a well-treated space and the refined artistry of the human ear. Beware the snares of quick-fix plugins and the deceptive 'car test', for they may lead you astray. Instead, find solace in the wisdom that your DAW, while a trusty steed, isn't the hero of this tale—your skills are.

Embark on a historical quest through the evolution of mastering, where Eric, armed with tales of yesteryear's resourceful audio engineering, shares the transition from the analogue days to the digital dominion. The narrative weaves through his experiences, from reshaping the thunderous realms of electronic dance music to challenging the norms by mastering directly from clients' DAW project files. Through this, we scrutinize the fine line separating mixing from mastering, a frontier continually tested by innovation.

As our journey nears its end, Eric imparts strategic sagacity for the modern music producer: the golden rules of gain staging and workflow finesse. We examine the nuanced alchemy of mastering for today's streaming giants, ensuring your tracks resonate with crystal-clear quality and robust loudness. Remember, the path to mastering virtuosity demands patience, practice, and an unyielding commitment to one's craft. Join us and absorb Eric's invaluable expertise, a beacon for those navigating the multifaceted seas of audio engineering.
