By age 4, he began piano lessons, and at 6, he started performing. Throughout his childhood and teens, Rory showcased his talents at pubs, galas, and blues festivals. Self-taught on various instruments, including guitar, drums, bass, and accordion, he expanded his musical repertoire.

After playing trumpet in a regional arts high school program, Rory decided to pursue his musical passion. In 2019, he was accepted into Berklee College of Music on guitar, where he delved into music production, and songwriting, and honed his instrumental skills. In 2022, Rory released his debut single, "It Just Feels Like Home," a poignant rock ballad influenced by Paul McCartney's music. True to his musical journey, Rory wrote, arranged, recorded, and produced the song entirely on his own, showcasing his multifaceted talents. Adept in songwriting and multi-instrumentalism he skillfully navigates the intersection of rock and blues within his compositions. Having gained admission to Berklee College of Music in 2019, he pursued a comprehensive study of music production and songwriting, culminating in his graduation with a Bachelor of Music in Professional Music in 2023. Rory recently unveiled his first album, "Awake and Alone," on April 28, 2023. Demonstrating his artistic talent, he undertook the writing, performance, recording, and production processes entirely within his Berklee dorm

Fiona Ross - What Is It Like Being a Female Jazz Artist, Community Builder & Journalist ?24 Feb 202400:32:08

Send us a text

Named among the 100 Alternative Power Music List for 2020, multi-award winning jazz artist, editor-in-chief, journalist and founder of the award winning Women in Jazz Media organisation Fiona Ross never stops. As vocalist, pianist, composer and producer, Fiona has become known for creating her own contemporary jazz sound incorporating fast paced Latin Jazz, vintage Jazz club, a little neo soul along with heart wrenching ballads. She came to the worlds attention as ‘the artist that gave Ed Sheeran his ‘first push’ but very quickly established herself as an artist in her own right and has received incredible reviews and awards across the globe for all of her albums.

Her live performances have seen her perform at prestigious venues including 606 Club, Pizza Express, Hampstead jazz Club, Nells Jazz and Blues, Jazz Café Posk and Toulouse Lautrec and festivals such as the EFG London Jazz Festival and her music is played on radio stations all over the world.

Fiona has achieved many accolades for her work including Best Jazz Song from the World Songwriting Awards, Outstanding achievement awarded by the Global Music Awards and International female songwriter of the year from the International Singer Songwriters Association. She has been featured in many publications including Tinnitist, Jazziz, Record World Magazine, Jazz Corner, Ink 19 and Jazz Quarterly. Fiona’s song ‘Mistress’ which was recorded live in a stairwell, was selected to be included in the British Library archives for prosperity.

There has rarely been a day since then for Fiona that has not centered around
music. Enrolled in dance, drama and singing lessons at the age of two, piano at age six. At what moment did Fiona make a conscious choice to pursue a career in music? There wasn't a moment. There was never a time when there was any other choice. By the age of eight years old Fiona was starring in London's West End. Talent like Fiona's doesn't go unnoticed; soon she was signed to an agency and was featured in a string of television commercials and print advertisements and was recording radio jingles for everything from ketchup to Fairy dishwashing soap.

At the age of fourteen she lied about her age and talked her way into gigging on weekends in jazz clubs throughout London, from the classy nightspots of the elite to some rather seedy pubs that were no place for an ordinary teenager. There were never any contracts to sign, it was always cash in hand at the end of the night. No one even suspected that a voice that startling in its maturity and passion could belong to a singer barely into her teens. Fiona says “ Telling them that I had a job singing and playing Jazz as a solo artist in a club in London, I was so thrilled, but they were furious - well, I was only 14 at the time. ”

Fiona attended the prestigious Arts Educational School (the English equivalent of New York's High School for Performing Arts) where Julie Andrews, Catherine Zeta Jones and Will Young, to name just a few, also trained. Fiona's career has taken her all over the musical map. She has worked as a musical director, session musician, composer, choreographer, director, dancer, actor, model - She even sang back-up for a rock and roll band called Rocking Willie and the Y-Fronts when she was 15.

Alongside this, educating young people has been Fiona’s passion and she was Head of British Academy of New Music, London, for nearly nine years, where she was responsible for the training of Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora and Jess Glynne, to name a few.

Joshua (Satch) Satchell - What is It Like Being a Trans (male) Singer / Songwriter in the UK music Industry ?25 Jan 202400:29:42

Send us a text

Small town born and fled, Joshua ‘SATCH’ Satchell migrated to Brighton to pursue his songwriting career, eventually forming and fronting the band ‘‘Frankie Furlow’, with long time collaborator Will Nash. The project enjoyed early success and performed at major festivals such as Glastonbury, The Great Escape and Reeperbahn and at venues across the UK and Europe, but something was missing.

After coming out as Trans, his voice breaking and the lowering of the keys of many songs, it was time to write some new ones.

With lyrical candor, genre-queer pop arrangements, and a band of talented friends alongside him, SATCH began sharing his story at Pride festivals all over the country, including headlining the first ever trans led stage at Pride in London.
Simultaneously, the young wordsmith was inspired to help others to tell their stories, and started co-writing with artists and producers around the globe, while also interviewing various trans voices on his esteemed podcast ‘Satch and Leo’s Transmission’.

His ground-breaking, autobiographical debut album “Present In The Post'' was released in October 2023. Launched to a packed out Phoenix arts club in London, one music journalist remarked ‘'Satch is one of the most impressive new songwriters of this year. He speaks from the heart and stands out from the crowd’.

Sonically connecting with the marginalized, SATCH isn’t a project aiming to change the music industry. SATCH is a project aiming to change the world.

Being a trans man in Cardiff, Wales, in 2023 may involve a variety of experiences, as attitudes and inclusivity can vary within different communities and environments. Wales, in recent years, has made efforts to be more inclusive and supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, including transgender individuals.

In Cardiff, as in many urban areas, there may be more resources, support groups, and awareness of transgender issues. The city may offer more inclusive spaces, both socially and within institutions. However, the level of inclusivity can also depend on individual attitudes and specific circumstances.

It's important to note that while progress has been made, challenges and varying degrees of acceptance can still exist. Some trans individuals may face discrimination or encounter less understanding in certain situations. On the positive side, awareness campaigns, advocacy efforts, and legal protections have been implemented to foster a more inclusive environment

In addition to his musical pursuits, Casper has dedicated himself to comprehensive research on Trans Inclusion and Safety. His focus extends to understanding the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals within the music industry and at live events in Wales. With a grant from Becon Cmyrru Wales, he founded Transform Music, a platform that amplifies the voices and experiences of transgender artists.

Music Industry Insights Worldwide Vol 2 Podcast

Episode 5 -  Yvonne Mwale - Performer

A global artist by any measure, the eclectically versatile and ever-passionate Yvonne Mwale returns this year with her fourth album release, the brilliantly vibrant and immersive ‘Free Soul’.

From difficult beginnings, growing up as an orphan in Zambia, Yvonne’s journey through life has been one that ultimately showcases an entirely unique style and perspective in her music. Currently residing in Germany, Yvonne works hard to leave her struggles behind her, to move on from the past and embrace a brighter future with open arms. ‘Free Soul’ is absolutely an embodiment of that progression and intention.

A supreme collection of original recordings, designed to provoke feelings of energy and blissful escapism, ‘Free Soul’ incorporates tribal rhythms and a number of different genres and styles. Leading with an organic world music vibe, yet skilfully fusing this with multiple layers of pop, jazz and even EDM, the album is an easy must for world music and pop fans far and wide. Wherever the moment takes her, the songs represent this in a unique instance of expression and creative freedom. Even amidst such variety though, Yvonne’s inherent connection to her roots can always be relied upon to breathe life and authenticity into the process.

Far from a new starter, Yvonne has already performed at a plethora of international music festivals, and has bagged a handful of impressive awards along the way. In 2009 she won Best Upcoming Female Artist at the Ngoma Awards in Zambia. That same year she took home an award at the CrossRoads InterRegio Festival. In 2013, her well-travelled nature found her as a finalist at the RFI Prix Decouverté in France, and in 2018 she took second place at the World Citizen Artists Awards in Jamaica.

The journey has been a long and unpredictable one, but these qualities and experiences undoubtedly shine with stunning brightness throughout this latest project. From mellow layers of melody to choir-like harmonious anthems and outright dance-floor smashes, ‘Free Soul’ encapsulates precisely the concept implied by its title. Yvonne Mwale is a free soul, through and through. A talented, emotionally intentional and musically skilful artist, who we can expect and hope to see performing on stages across the globe in 2020 and beyond.

Denim Blu, an emerging Toronto-based singer-songwriter, shares his experiences and challenges as a Chinese-born queer artist breaking barriers in the pop music landscape.
