5 Benefits of Self-Care05 Jan 202500:20:58

In this episode, Jill and Linda are diving into the real benefits of self-care. The kind that gets you through those melty moments and helps you feel more like yourself again. The post-holiday chaos or the daily juggle of motherhood, we chat about why self-care is necessary.

Our 5 benefits are not one and done. In fact, we feel that we could have easily listed 50 benefits of self-care (which would have made a very LONG episode). Here's what you can hear about in this episode.

  • Energy Replenishment – How self-care helps you bounce back after big events (or big meltdowns).
  • Building Better Neural Pathways – Small, intentional acts of care can shift your mindset in surprising ways.
  • Less Eggshells – When you care for yourself, you’re less on edge (and so is everyone else).
  • Understanding Yourself Better – Self-care reveals what truly fills your cup (and what doesn’t).
  • Gentler Parenting – A little care for you leads to more patience and compassion for them.

We’re all about making self-care realistic, imperfect, and sometimes even messy and we’d love to hear what self-care looks like for you. What benefits have you noticed in your life?

Overindulgence in Self-Care29 Dec 202400:17:23

As we wrap up 2024, Jill and Linda reflect on the highs and lows of the season. From sweet family traditions to the sometimes overwhelming need for solitude and balance. This episode concentrates on the real and relatable side of self-care, especially during the holidays when indulgence can sneak in under the guise of relaxation.

  • The joy of family time, but also the need for space and quiet.
  • The delicate balance between guiding little ones and managing their endless energy.
  • Recognizing when self-care crosses into habits that leave us feeling worse, like too much social media scrolling or late-night Netflix binges.
  • Small shifts to replenish energy without the guilt spiral.
  • How to step into 2025 with intention, leaving the less helpful habits behind.

As you reflect on your own self-care this season, we invite you to take stock of what truly fills your cup. Sometimes, the best self-care isn’t what’s easy but what nurtures you long-term.

Take a moment this week to identify one small way to refresh your self-care routine. Share it with us – we’d love to hear how you’re resetting for the year ahead.

Thank you for spending this year with us. We’re so grateful for our community of moms showing up, even in the muck of it all.

  • Christmas wishes for self-care. Jill and Linda share their hopes for more collective kindness and less internal criticism as we move forward.

This episode is a gentle reminder that self-care doesn’t have to be perfect or elaborate. Sometimes, it’s about finding small joys and giving ourselves permission to pause.

Building our Self-Care Resilience15 Dec 202400:24:52

This week, Jill and Linda dive into the messy, often interrupted journey of building resilience as moms and how self-care plays a pivotal role. From car troubles to toddler birthday cake improvisations, we share the highs and lows of parenting and how embracing imperfection helps us grow stronger. Here’s what we unpack in this episode:

  • How self-care is not just about pampering but building the emotional and physical stamina to handle life's chaos.
  • Sharing the realities of parenting wins and setbacks, including creative cake fixes and resting through sickness.
  • How setting personal incentives can help us prioritize self-care amidst busy schedules, and why boundaries matter for moms and kids alike.
  • Navigating tantrums, hunger-fueled emotions, and how meeting basic needs connects to emotional resilience.
  • Balancing emotional expression with boundaries and learning to parent while reparenting ourselves.

Resilience doesn’t mean avoiding emotions but learning to navigate them. Sometimes, having snacks at the ready (for kids and moms alike!) can be a game-changer.

What Happens When You Don't Practice Self-Care?08 Dec 202400:22:22

The leading question in this episode is a slightly different take. We wonder what happens when we don't practice self-care. Most of us have been there, and Jill and Linda are no exception. While thinking about this question, we talk about several topics including:

  • How we are more likely to engage in distractions and unhealthy behaviours such as scrolling or eating too much ice cream.
  • The energy and bandwidth suck when we don't practice self-care, and on the other side, the energy it can take sometimes to do self-care in the first place.
  • How little things may aggravate you more than they normally do.
  • The example we are setting for our kids when we don't practice self-care.
  • How do our bodies tell us/show us?
  • Sleep and routines, how they affect our attitudes and general outlook when it comes to self-care.

Stress and Self-Care01 Dec 202400:25:13

Stress. It manifests physically, impacts decision-making, and leads to reactive behaviors and pushing our boundaries. In this episode Jill and Linda talk about stress from their own perspectives and provide insights into managing stress, the importance of self-care, and invite listeners to reflect on their own experiences with stress. Tune in to hear about:

  • Jill shares the thrill of her first-ever book talk, stepping outside her comfort zone to connect with others and embrace new opportunities.
  • From Halloween meltdowns to calendar overwhelm, we discuss the importance of leaving space to breathe and regroup amidst life’s demands.
  • Learn how stress can test or strengthen your boundaries and how setting realistic expectations helps reduce unnecessary pressure.
  • Stress affects more than your mood—it impacts your physical health. Recognizing the signs, from foggy thinking to stress pimples, is key to holistic self-care.
  • Discover how sudden stress reactions can confuse loved ones and how open communication fosters understanding and support.

Your well-being matters just as much as everyone else’s. Stress and self-care are part of the motherhood journey, and this episode invites you to reflect on your own experiences. What boundaries do you need to strengthen, and how can you better tune into your body's needs?

Why is Self-Care So Hard? (Part Two)24 Nov 202400:23:26

In this episode, we continue our discussion around the question - why is self-care so hard? This is part two, after episode one of last week, in which Jill and Linda found there was actually quite a lot to talk about when it comes to the hard side of self-care. Afterall, self-care isn't meant to be 'hard', is it? Hear all about topics such as:

  • Hard things in parallel with good things, such as allergies and encouragement and sleeplessness and arcade games.
  • Constant interruptions and noise around us.
  • Waiting for the 'right' time and for things to be perfect.
  • Self-care bandwidth (or lack of)
  • Social media making self-care look easier than it actually is and also only showing the self-care activity itself and not the logistics of making it happen and the 'hard' bits behind the scenes.
  • Expectations. One word with big associations and big conversations.
  • Regulation of emotions and feeling like me are insane and crazy.
  • Talking ourselves into thinking that it is hard and feeling guilty if it doesn't happen.

Is self-care really as hard as we make it out to be? We think both yes and no in answer to this question. What about you?

We would love to hear from you. Find find Jill on Instagram @mamaoutspoken and https://www.mamaoutspoken.com/ and Linda @hellolindabonney or https://www.lindabonney.com.

Why is Self-Care So Hard? (Part One)17 Nov 202400:22:50

Why can self-care be so difficult to maintain? Should it really be this hard? Jill and Linda still wonder about these questions, even after 82 episodes of talking openly about these questions. Today's episode is no different, as we dive into the challenges and hard side of self-care. Take a listen as we chat about:

  • All the different things we need to do before we can do something.
  • The self-talk about how hard it is and how much this can cause a delay.
  • Freedom to get up and go do something for ourselves, the changes and shifts that happen as mothers in this regard and for our self-care.
  • Competing priorities and needs. Especially when we are at the stage where we are feeling like it is hard to manage and need to get some self-care time.
  • Making self-care second nature and more of a habit, rather than another thing to remember.

We hope this conversation encourages you to remember that self-care isn't always easy and even small acts of self-care can make a big difference. We look forward to joining you for part two next week!

Too Emotional for Self-Care?10 Nov 202400:23:03

It's no joke. Motherhood is full of intense emotional moments. Not only for us, but also from our kids as well. Jill and Linda both have had a lot of practice when it comes to emotions and now talking about self-care adds a whole new level to the conversation. Listen in as we talk about:

  • What is 'too emotional'?
  • The stereotypical labels that are placed on us, both from ourselves, others and society.
  • Do we let our emotions determine the kind of self-care that we do? Or whether we do any at all?
  • Do we need to be regulated to have effective self-care?
  • Knowing that self-care is needed when we are too emotional or our kids
  • Is sleep your go to self-care when you are 'too emotional'?
  • Different range of emotions - often we can only focus on the negative or bigger ones.
  • Getting out of the funk.

Melty Moments and Self-Care03 Nov 202400:23:12

Both Jill and Linda often refer to the concept of 'melty', which refers to the heightened emotional states following significant events or intense shifts in energy. In this episode, we're discussing the concept and unpacking it a bit further as we chat about:

  • Personal stories and recent experiences with memorable family outings and unexpected challenges.
  • What it means to be ‘melty’ and why it's so common during transitions.
  • Practical self-care tips for new mums to manage emotional ups and downs.
  • The importance of noticing and accepting ‘melty’ moments to stay balanced.

Loving Yourself as Self-Care27 Oct 202400:19:34

Jill feels like she's spent an entire day yelling back and forth because of blocked ears, sickness and more and Linda has spent an hour with two kids scrambling around the car while waiting for an appointment. Far from the picture of loving yourself as self-care that we are talking about in this episode. Yet, after sharing our highs and lows, we dive in and think about what loving ourselves actually looks like. What it actually means. We chat about things such as:

  • The age-old saying of self-care isn't selfish and often we need to put ourselves first.
  • Mothering (and loving) the mother and taking care of ourselves too.
  • Acceptance. Recognising where you are and what season you are in. Whether it be sickness, being overwhelmed, or chucking your weekly plans in the bin.
  • Expectations of ourselves and our self-care.

Supportive Self-Care20 Oct 202400:20:19

If you Google the word "support," there's a description that says something like a thing that bears the weight of something or keeps it upright. Regarding supportive self-care, how can we practice self-care without bearing all the weight and still stay upright in the process? These are hard questions to ponder as Jill and Linda dive into another discussion and talk about:

  • Practical ways in which we support ourselves and others, such as cooking a meal for someone, offering to look after an extra kid or two, and cleaning out a car.
  • The nuances that are unsaid and unwritten when it comes to supportive self-care.
  • How hard it can be to accept help, especially when we are sick or tired or unsure if we are a burden.
  • Spending time alone to support ourselves and others, when its quicker and easier to get things done rather than having extra company alongside.
  • Checking in to our immediate reactions to events or when self-care is mucked up and doesn't go as planned.
  • Continuing to have conversations and feel seen and understood.

Self-Care When You're Sick13 Oct 202400:18:10

Hands up if you have faced the challenges of being sick as a parent? Extra hands up if you also struggle to fit in self-care when managing your health at the same time. Today Jill and Linda have thrown a spanner in the works and changed the episode title right on the line. Based on first hand experience, today's episode is talking about self-care when you're sick. Listen in as we talk about:

  • What support looks like when you're sick and the importance of accepting help.
  • Permission to drop the ball and rest. A reminder that we all need at times.
  • Passing sickness around. How to navigate that and our own conflicts when it comes to self-care.
  • Unsaid, unwritten and understood self-care of ourselves when we are sick.

If you are sick when listening to this, please know that you are not alone. We would love to hear from you. Find find Jill on Instagram @mamaoutspoken and https://www.mamaoutspoken.com/ and Linda @hellolindabonney or https://www.lindabonney.com.

Making Time for Self-Care06 Oct 202400:21:28

How do we incorporate self-care into our busy lives? It’s a question that mamas across the world possibly ask countless times every day. Jill and Linda are making time today to have this conversation as they touch on their personal journeys and what they have learnt along the way. Tune in to hear about:

  • Is self-care easier to plan on the calendar or leave white space available for it?
  • Saying yes to self-care can sometimes mean saying no to other things.
  • Sometimes, we think self-care takes longer than it does.
  • The time we spend thinking about self-care compared to doing it can be significant, and it requires some honest examination.
  • Motivation? Does this matter?
  • Life demands always seem to be more important.
  • Mothers' needs (self-care) often take a backseat to others.

We continue to learn and do our best, especially when making time for self-care. We would love you to join the conversations and email us at muckedupmyselfcare@gmail.com with any questions, suggestions, or comments from this episode.

Self-Care Activities at Home29 Sep 202400:23:36

As Linda approaches another school holidays and Jill is just off the back of one, today we are talking all about self-care activities at home. In the 75 episodes so far, we’ve realised that self-care at home has changed for both of us, which makes for an interesting conversation as we talk about:

  • Guilt and priorities when it comes to house maintenance and chores and the distractions that can prevent us from getting true self-care moments.
  • Doing self-care alongside our kids. What that looks like in reality, especially if our kids are sick.
  • Being mindful of what we can accept and involve as self-care when it’s harder at home with everything else around us.
  • Mapping out our days and planning for spontaneity or when things get really mucked up
  • Music! How it adds an extra layer of enjoyment at home alongside other activities.

Highs and Lows of Self-Care22 Sep 202400:23:13

Each episode Jill and Linda start the conversation by sharing recent highs and lows that are currently happening all around them. Why do we do this? To appreciate, acknowledge and understand that there are several aspects to self-care and parenting and life is 'real' in the fact that we can't just focus on one particular area. There are times when we are left unsatisfied that we didn't get the outcome we were hoping for. On the flipside, even if it doesn't work out the way we were hoping, there are still moments of joy and appreciation that things are working out differently. Listen in as we chat about the highs and lows and talk about:

  • Starting the school year strong, even with mishaps along the way.
  • When each time we sit down there is something being destroyed, destructed, ripped up, torn down and how we can turn that around.
  • How in each bad day there can be good moments.
  • It is important to talk it out and have support when we are stuck in lows and celebrating highs.
  • The reality of mucked-up motherhood and self-care.

Good Moms/Mums and Self-Care15 Sep 202400:22:01

Do you feel comfortable getting told you are a good Mum/Mom? Yes, we’re going with both versions today being that we are connecting across the globe for this conversation. Often we can get told one thing and think another, and parenting is no different. Jill and Linda think about what this phrase means for both of them as the conversation takes on a form of its own. Included inside this episode, we talk about:

  • When you’re crazy, stressed and ready to pack it all in and feel the need to defend yourself when someone says ‘you’re doing great!’
  • Getting kids into the car is a marathon in itself.
  • The old saying ‘you’re going to miss these days’ when we have next to no energy and have so much happening around us.
  • Does consistent self-care make you a good mum? Is it even possible?
  • Superhero images and comparisons we make. Even between good and bad, each perspective may be different.

Narratives Surrounding Self-Care08 Sep 202400:23:19

Self-care has become quite a buzz word these days and we are often led to believe that self-care can cure burn out, depression, anxiety, and other effects of living in a society built on imperialism. The narrative suggests that these issues can be easily solved by finding the perfect self-care routine or just setting better boundaries (another form of "self-care"). However, this oversimplifies the root causes of such problems and shifts the blame onto individuals rather than addressing systemic issues. Jill and Linda are discussing the narratives we often hear surrounding self-care in this episode and talk about:

  • That there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to the meaning of self-care.
  • Our interpretations and perspectives of self-care.
  • Blaming ourselves when self-care gets mucked up and how we compare ourselves to others.
  • Should we be putting the onus for change entirely on us?
  • Switching something out for self-care.

We are excited that the narrative of self-care has expanded and will continue to have conversations surrounding self-care and what it looks like for us.

We encourage you to join the conversations and email us at muckedupmyselfcare@gmail.com with any questions, suggestions, or comments from this episode.

Self-Care for Lazy Days01 Sep 202400:16:57

For today's episode, Jill and Linda are celebrating Self-Care for Lazy Moms Day which is celebrated on September 6th!

We ask the serious questions and laugh a little at how we've possibly 'almost' forgotten what laziness looks like. Listen in as we talk about:

  • Have you forgotten how to be lazy as a mama?
  • Is self-care a form of laziness?
  • Sleep. The Achilles heel of many mothers and lack of it is certainly apparent!

What would a lazy day look like for you? We would genuinely love to know!

Self-Care Needs Self-Awareness25 Aug 202400:23:23

  • Recognising our personal needs and those of our children and others around us.
  • Finding the balance between our kids becoming self-aware and still being there for them (while keeping our sanity in the process)

  • Figuring out how to fit more self-care into our days.
  • Prioritising what needs to get done.
  • Getting out of the mindset of to-do lists and endless lists of things to get done.

Self-Care vs Self-Compassion11 Aug 202400:25:52

Self-care and self-compassion sound interchangeable, but they have a distinction between thinking and doing. Self-compassion is regarding yourself compassionately. Self-care, by contrast, is treating yourself compassionately. Jill and Linda explore these concepts and thoughts aloud in conversation as they cover:

  • Navigating the highs and lows of life, ranging from steam cleaning carpets to enjoying live music.
  • Feeling overwhelmed when it comes to tantrums, routines and trying to find balance amongst it all.
  • How does the quality of our self-care have the potential to impact our ability to extend compassion to ourselves and others?
  • Consistent, meaningful self-care can indeed make it easier to practice self-compassion and manage difficult moments gracefully.
  • Forgiving ourselves, giving ourselves grace and accepting others as part of the healing journey towards both more self-care and self-compassion.

Personal Values and Self-Care04 Aug 202400:24:47

Values. We often might loose sight of what is important to us when we become mamas. There are times when our values also become stronger as we become parents. In today’s episode, Jill and Linda talk about personal values and ask questions such as:

  • What are they right now?
  • How did you work out what your values were?
  • How are we living our personal values?
  • Are they changing?
  • What do they mean?
  • How are we aligning with our values?

And more…

Pat on the Back Self-Care28 Jul 202400:19:53

What does it look like to pat yourself on your back? Is it easier for you to pat someone else on the back? Let's be honest for a hot minute, being a mama is a role that can be quite demanding and exhausting. It’s easy to put everyone else’s needs before our own, leaving us drained and sometimes even feeling guilty for wanting just a little bit of "me time." But the truth is, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Jill and Linda discuss the concept of pat on the back self-care and talk about themes such as:

  • Why we deserve self-care
  • Recharging your batteries. You’ll not be able to give your best to those who need you without some acknowledgement and acceptance.
  • Integrating self-care into our lives by starting small. You don't have to overhaul your routine overnight. Begin by carving out small pockets of time dedicated to you, whether it's enjoying a cup of coffee in peace or reading a few pages of a great book.
  • The importance of physical movement and activity.
  • One of the biggest barriers to self-care is guilt. Pat addresses this by encouraging us to reframe our thinking.

Self-care is about more than just treating ourselves; it's about preserving our health and happiness. By making self-care a priority, we’re not only investing in our well-being but also setting a positive example for our children.

When Our Self-Care is Broken21 Jul 202400:21:36

Often, we can feel 'broken'. Sounds a bit dull right? Especially when there are a lot of messages out there telling that us that we aren’t broken at all. Yet amidst the emotions, hormones, rage, PND, and pressures of parenting…it can feel like we’re mucking up left, right, and centre. What does this mean when it comes to self-care? How can we fix ourselves, or at least increase our ability to deal with the overwhelm? Jill and Linda are curious to know if it is possible so we explore this topic further in this conversation and talk about:

  • Hitting rock bottom and making it through to the other side, with an expansion and growth to boot!
  • Open and honest vulnerability about how we sometimes struggle to fit in our own self-care time.
  • Using our calendar and planning to stack out some non-negotiables.
  • Overplanning mode and falling into the mode of busy-ness and the feeling of doing something.
  • When things don’t work the way we plan and the resilience we can build as part of that journey and acceptance of frustration or upset that it can sometimes cause.

We all can get into a funk and it is common to feel that our self-care is broken.

Celebrations in Self-Care14 Jul 202400:23:15

How much are we celebrating?  We would like to think that celebrations come easy, are plentiful….however the reality is that sometimes life goes along it’s merry way and we forget how far we have come, forget that the little bits of self-care all add up and concentrate on getting through the day without utterly falling apart. Although both Jill and Linda are exhausted at the time of recording this episode, we still found a way to celebrate ourselves and our mucked up self-care. Listen in to hear about:

  • Lifting heavy stuff! The empowering nature of strength, commitment and getting stronger.
  • Celebrating in the form of doing the thing and taking action itself.
  • Putting in extra effort to honour ourselves and events that have impacted our lives.
  • When we don’t feel like celebrating at all and in a muck.
  • Small wins that we can celebrate and finding good in every day.

We would love to hear from you, it always encourages us to know you are listening along! Please reach out to us at muckedupmyselfcarepodcast@gmail.com with any questions, suggestions, or comments from this episode.

Self-Care in Postpartum07 Jul 202400:26:58

And we're back, from opposite sides of the world, from opposite time zones and weather seasons. Today, Jill and Linda are talking about self-care in postpartum, notably after Jill recent completed the Sounds of Silence 5k event. We both understand that postpartum extends beyond the immediate post-birth phase and can last several years. In this episode we dive into a topic close to our hearts and talk about:

  • Accepting help! It can be really be the hardest thing to do at the best of times.
  • Nap when the baby naps. While this seems simple, the reality can often be far from it. The temptation to use this time to catch up on chores or indulge in some "me-time" activities often overrides the need for rest.
  • Taking it slowly when and where possible and remembering the beauty and simplicity of stepping outside for fresh air and getting into the sun.
  • Reminding yourself that this is a phase that will not be forever.
  • Nutrition and water. If you're breastfeeding, staying hydrated is even more crucial.
  • Carrying baby if this works for you. It allows you to keep your baby close while freeing up your hands to accomplish other tasks. Cooking dinner, cleaning, or even working becomes more manageable, and you can move freely without constantly worrying about where the baby is.
  • Embracing the mess and recognising small victories.
  • Leaning on your community, family, friends and support groups.

Both Jill and Linda are passionate about advocating for the need to find practical ways to care for yourself amidst the demanding early years of motherhood. Take a deep breath, sip some water, and give yourself that well-deserved break

Figuring Out What Works for Self-Care30 Jun 202400:28:34

Can we ever fully figure out what works for self-care? Afterall, what often works one day might not work on another day. Are the sells of quick fixes adding to our stress? What has worked for these two mamas makes an interesting discussion. We certainly don't think we have all of it figured out much of the time. So, listen in as we open up and share some thoughts together, touching on:

  • How we often put ourselves last and focus on the needs of others, making it hard to sometimes remember what we desire, are striving for, enjoy and how we can better care for ourselves.
  • Meal prepping, planning and figuring out small ideas that can help towards a smoother dinner time. Including juggling different phases of diets and hormones and needing a simpler approach to phase-specific meals.
  • Creating joyful moments and rituals. Practical ideas to integrate joy and encourage a sense of connection with your kiddos at dinnertime.
  • Consistency and effectiveness for self-care
  • Checking in with our energy leaks. Whats working, what's not? Reflection and vulnerability as we share the load about household effectiveness and figuring it out one step at a time.
  • We check back in with our top 5 again. Are they still relevant? How are we taking steps towards our favourite things as a way of figuring stuff out.

We hope you find these insights and strategies helpful as you navigate the beautiful chaos of motherhood. By taking care of ourselves, we set a positive example for our children and ensure we have the energy and enthusiasm to meet life's challenges head-on.

When Self-Care Feels Too Hard23 Jun 202400:26:44

What happens when self-care feels like the hardest thing in the world? When you're swamped in responsibilities and hardly want to adult yourself into making dinner and tackling the toothbrush again? In this episode, we delve into the challenges of when self-care feels like a monster that is stuck under the bed. Tune in as we talk about:

  • Balancing work, family, time and our own values with kids climbing on desks and all the unexpected things that happen as you try to run out the door.
  • Trying to cram everything into shorter time slots and wondering how on earth we can increase our hours in the day to get it all done.
  • Remembering how we have overcome and created experiences for both us and our family (even when it 'feels' too hard.
  • Allowing ourselves to be okay with where we are at. Not adding unnecessary pressure is a form of self-care.
  • Choosing your hard and living a value-driven life.
  • The power of sticky note time and how it helps us to prioritise our self-care.

The unfiltered and unedited quest continues, and even all these conversations and episodes in we still fully believe that self-care will feel hard at times. We hope you are finding yourself and setting yourself up for better success, especially through the hard bits.

Myths Behind Self-Care16 Jun 202400:32:26

Self-care has become a buzzword in contemporary lifestyles, touted across social media as the key to well-being. But how can we sort out the juice and the fluff? What’s a myth and what’s not? Jill and Linda are back with another discussion about the importance of self-care, sharing personal highs and lows from their past week. Pick up the headphones, or hook up the Bluetooth in the car as we chat about:

  • Is self-care optional? Whether you're aware of it or not, practicing self-care improves your well-being exponentially.
  • Does self-care have to be expensive and lavish? Simple activities such as a walk outside or reading a book can be self-care.
  • Is self-care selfish? There's a fine line between caring for yourself and neglecting your responsibilities.
  • Saying ‘no’ to events or engagements that overextend you is not selfish; it’s smart.
  • How can self-care backfire? Doom-scrolling on social media can seem restful but usually isn’t.

Understanding self-care's true essence is an ongoing journey. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or just beginning, breaking through the myths and discovering what truly nourishes you is crucial.

Self-Care Guilt in Going from Contributor to Dependent09 Jun 202400:26:26

At times it seems that there’s a wave of guilt that happens around being a mama, particularly when going from contributor to dependent. And chances have it that we would like to open up the discussion around this very topic in this episode. Grab your headphones if you can find them or listen out loud as Jill and Linda talk about:

  • Identity shifts when becoming mum, when we may loose contact with what we believed we were good at or important to us.
  • Postpartum realities of not wanting to go back to our old lives because our lives have changed so rapidly.
  • Working from home and the adventure of becoming an entrepreneur.
  • Social connections and contacts - talking to other adults in your day rather than toddler talk and/or interruptions in the park as you save your kid from climbing up the slide AGAIN...
  • The unpaid labor of parenting and mothering and running a household.
  • When we are still the primary contributor financially as well as the main parent - juggling both balls in the air all the time.
  • Guilt and grief for a life we once had.
  • Working out or priorities and playing along the way.

Self-Care Idea: Take a walk.

Split Self-Care When Our Attention is in Several Places at Once02 Jun 202400:25:07

It’s school holidays and the overwhelm is the real deal. What happens when we are split between all the things and all the things and more? We turned up and recorded a podcast for you, in all the messy ways. In this episode Jill and Linda chat in between all the things and talk about:

  • Fluctuating energies, whether it be because of hormones, parenting, work, weather, and unpredictability in our lives.
  • Multitasking - do we think it’s possible? Is it good for our brains? Are we lying to ourselves to think that we can do it like we want to?
  • Time management and length of how long things ‘really’ take to get done when our bandwidth is off.
  • Compromises and interruptions – do we need to say any more?
  • How splitting ourselves is sometimes the reality and turning up still necessary.
  • How does split attention reflect on our priorities?

If we could have your attention for just a moment. We have been sharing self-care ideas throughout our episodes and if you would like to find out more, we would love you to reach out to us at muckedupmyselfcarepodcast@gmail.com.

Self-Care Doesn't Always Have to be Long or Alone26 May 202400:22:36

According to Google: self-care is done with the intention of caring for yourself, not with the intention to harm or take from others. Being selfish means there's a desire to take from others, often to their detriment. However, self-care is about replenishing your resources without depleting someone else's. Do you agree? Jill and Linda are discussing this definition and more popular cultural ideas in today’s episode as we discover:

  • How we’ve adapted to incorporating others into our self-care (particularly with children and work commitments)
  • What self-care means to us individually and how our deeper understanding has helped our energy levels for us and those surrounding us.
  • When our needs for self-care can become unhealthy. Balancing it with life and appreciating the small moments of joy in our days.
  • Learning to say no (and still learning!)
  • Ways we have changed our thoughts about self-care and found ways to do it alongside our kids as well. Examples of self-care with kiddos, friends, our significant other and ourselves.
  • Being kind to others, even anonymously, can give you a burst of dopamine that warms your heart.

Places of Self-Care Enjoyment (Ways We Can Unstuck Our Muck)19 May 202400:29:45

What are your favourite places of enjoyment and self-care? In this podcast place today we have many little voices joining us and we are talking about places of self-care enjoyments and ways that we can unstuck our muck. Listen in as Jill and Linda talk about:

  • Getting time alone vs the need for quiet. Linda had quite a time finding a place that wasn’t filled with people and things and all the rest of it for her sticky note day.
  • What we desire for our self-care and why that matters. Are we being fussy? Or simply aware of what is missing and seeking solutions?
  • We check back in with some of our top 5 self-care activities and remember why we love a quiet afternoon or getting outside to put our feet in the grass.
  • When we push ourselves a little out of the comfort and into new places of enjoyment we perhaps hadn't thought of before. Alternatives and solutions.
  • Acceptance and shifting to places of enjoyment different to that previous to children.
  • Figuring out our priorities and also emotional spaces and places that keep us tracking along.

It’s a jam-packed episode and one which we feel is definitely an enjoyable one. We have been sharing self-care ideas throughout our episodes and if you would like to find out more, we would love you to reach out to us at muckedupmyselfcarepodcast@gmail.com.

How our Self-Care has Grown Since Our Earlier Episodes12 May 202400:20:19

As we’ve hit the year mark for the Mucked Up My Self-Care Podcast Jill and Linda are chatting about (and reflecting on) how our self-care has grown since our earlier episodes. As humans, we are continually healing, growing, and mucking up – yet how does self-care fit into that picture? We recognise that we are not the only ones on this journey and share our thoughts as we chat about:

  • Some of our most memorable moments and episodes to date.
  • Being able to talk about self-care with family, friends and others with more confidence now.
  • Ways that we continue to muck up making self-care happen in our lives
  • Acceptance of mucked up self-care rather than getting it 'right'.
  • Momentum and motivation for self-care activities and getting into the flow of self-care.
  • The wisdom of what self-care is for us now versus what we thought it was.

Our self-care idea for this episode is stretching. Sounds simple? We often are carrying a lot on our shoulders and forget the most basic of stretching. Unravelling Our Own Mucked Up Self-Care28 Apr 202400:25:41

Today on the podcast Jill and Linda are unravelling and unpacking their journeys of self-care in all the mucked up kinda ways. Linda is in a different location; Jill is feeling just a bit flat – yet…. after this episode they were both in a lighter and much better place (and we hope that you might be too!). Listen in as they talk about:

  • Navigating big moments in life, puzzling emotions and how we put our best foot forward for whatever is next.
  • How unravelling ourselves doesn’t have an end point and continues as we grow and shift.
  • Pain points and untwisting ourselves from what we get used to as life changes.
  • Different coping mechanisms and how we are honouring ourselves in self-care instead of putting it off.
  • Compromises and unravelling how the out of the ordinary can sacrifice our self-care.
  • How unravelling is a process and takes time, patience and remembering that pain points can be temporary and lead to better outcomes.

Confidence in Self-Care21 Apr 202400:25:17

  • The correlation between toilet/potty training and confidence.
  • How have we grown our self-care confidence.
  • Why realistic expectations help!

  • Having conversations with others about what self-care is and what it means to us.
  • Practice, practice, practice.

Misunderstood Self-Care14 Apr 202400:31:01

Ironically, both Jill and Linda had different understandings of self-care and what that meant when planning for this episode. It makes for a fun discussion and means the conversation darts around several different points, including:

  • The landscape of self-care talk for self-care's sake.
  • How self-care isn't about putting your own needs ahead of others.
  • Self-care isn't typically about treats or pampering.
  • Self-care and selfishness.
  • Self-care isn't a list of behaviors; what constitutes self-care depends on the situation.
  • Self-care involves a lot of the self-talk, not just the external things that other people see.
  • Self-care isn't just by yourself, it's often social interactions and connections.
  • It isn't a one and done situation.
  • Others' understanding of what is self care for me- having to defend/explain that something is self care.

Teaching our Kids about Self-Care07 Apr 202400:23:28

If you’ve been listening along to the podcast for a while, you’ve probably heard us talk about being living proof and living our self-care in ways that current match this phase of our life. What do you think our kids think about all this self-care talk and what does it mean to them? We explore how we are teaching the self-care down the generations and in this episode discuss:

  • Regulation and when emotions get larger than a mountain.
  • Finding out what they enjoy.
  • Talking to ourselves, them, and others about self-care and with kindness.
  • Including them in self-care activities, while taking leadership alongside.
  • Allowing them to take the lead.
  • Self-care for boys and men too, how do they talk about it?
  • Do you explain to them that your self-care is self-care and why you do it?
  • Do you explain something that you recognise is self-care for them as a self-care practice?

Safe Place for Self-Care Conversations31 Mar 202400:14:30

In our wildest dreams, a safe place for self-care conversations would include a room filled with soft, gentle music, providing a soothing background as you settle in for a meaningful conversation. The sound of a small waterfall in the corner might add to the tranquil ambience. Wait, what planet are we on? We know full well that many of our conversations also include little voices which echo around us. Listen in as Jill and Linda and other little voices as we talk about:

  • Feeling comfortable enough to have safety in conversation. What that means to each of us.
  • What direction we would love to take the podcast and what you mean to us when listening from the other end.
  • Vulnerable and unedited conversations.
  • Growth and acceptance and we continue to muck up.

Imperfect Self-Care24 Mar 202400:25:03

Is there such a thing as perfect self-care? Jill and Linda wonder if this dream exists as they cradle their anxieties, lack of sleep, and think about their imperfections as they chat about:

  • Sleep. The realities and imperfections of sleep as mamas.
  • Understanding what works for us and our kids, us as new mums, entrepreneurs and more.
  • Boundaries for unhealthy self-care such as binge or comfort eating, over-indulging, drinking more alcohol, taking too much time for yourself during work time slots.
  • Letting self-care drop off the calendar/routine because...life.
  • Being flexible and shifting expectations - original plan shift to modified plan.
  • Feelings we get when it's not 'perfect' and the way we anticipated it to be in our heads.
  • Some funny moments in our day which just highlight our mucked-up ways and how scattered we can feel.

Transitioning to More (or less) Self-Care17 Mar 202400:28:06

One of the greatest aims since the birth of the Mucked Up My Self-Care Podcast has been to transition our self-care in ways which allow us to grow and discover what self-care means to us. Hopefully in the process this will also get you thinking and transitioning as well. What happens when we transition to more, or less, self-care as we become more knowledgeable. We ponder this question and more today as Jill and Linda talk about:

  • When we try to cram in too much self-care.
  • Learning to utilise our time (without cramming it full)
  • When we try to prioritise other things over self-care.
  • Building our self-care muscles.
  • How self-care transitions are not linear.
  • Discernment about what is important in our self-care practices.
  • Shifting with the seasons you go through.
  • Considering the kid's seasons, yours, nature's, other's.
  • Being honest to stop something that's not filling your cup or is an energy suck.
  • Being confident to start something new and disciplined to stick with it - might fear this though.
  • We would love to hear from you, it always encourages us to know you are listening along!

Self-Care and Mental Load10 Mar 202400:22:36

From one particular standpoint, mental load refers to the cognitive and emotional burden associated with managing multiple responsibilities, often experienced by mothers. Harsh right? From many other standpoints, parents all over the world are overloaded by mental load when it comes to their self-care. As Jill and Linda wrestle their little ones and sigh at possibilities of coins getting flushed down the toilet, we touch on some of the following for this episode:

  • Unexpected hospital visits adding to the pressures of motherhood.
  • Creating happy snow memories down the generations.
  • Delegation of chores, systems that work and level ups as children grow older.
  • Internal and external motivations for us and for our children.
  • Specific days for specific tasks to keep us accountable and less effort for remembering.
  • Spaces around us that seem to be consumed with toys or mess and how that impacts our mental load.
  • Food preparation and dinner planning with children and the load it can involve.

Bear with us, we may be back for a part two!

Outspoken Self-Care03 Mar 202400:33:26

As we are fast approaching the year anniversary of the Mucked Up My Self-Care Podcast, Jill and Linda reflect on just how important it has been to speak their self-care out loud. What do we mean by that? Honesty and realisations, actions and beliefs,  to name a few. By being outspoken we have both developed and grown through conversations on this podcast. Listen in as we talk about:

  • The vulnerability that comes with sharing our stories out loud and knowing that we often aren’t the only one.
  • Actions that are supporting our self-care celebrations such as books, podcasts, community events and ways we are speaking to ourselves.
  • Why talking can help greatly at times in our lives we may not know what self-care can be for ourselves and have a misconception of what brings our energy back to us.
  • How speaking our self-care our loud can help us understand and realise what we might need to do to improve or accept ourselves more.
  • The ongoing effort of outspoken self-care.
  • Rejuvenating ourselves with self-care.

Self-Care and Sleep25 Feb 202400:19:28

1 in 3 adults are not getting enough rest or sleep, and there’s a high chance that many of those adults are parents. It’s quite a conundrum, because both Jill and Linda both know that getting more sleep also helps them get more self-care. But what happens when the day turns into night and the parenting doesn’t end? Listen in as we discuss real-life experiences and chat about what is happening in our self-care worlds. We cover a few topics including:

  • Food and sleep and hormone health.
  • When we finally get more sleep and realise how little sleep we are actually getting.
  • Bedtimes, kids, and lack of sleep when we put ourselves last. Coordination or children at different ages and with different needs.
  • Will we ever go to the bathroom alone again?
  • The attention we sometimes need at the end of the day too.
  • Is there a window of opportunity to bring in a join self-care thing as part of bedtime routine?

If you joined us last week you may remember that Jill and Linda chatted about Jill’s top five self-care activities and this week it’s Linda’s turn. The microphone is flipped and we’re in our element to talk about our favorites out loud. We’ve changed quite a bit over the years and speaking out loud about all these things is a great reflection and we hope that it also has a ripple effect for our listeners to think about their five as well. Listen to us chat about Linda’s top five, in no particular order:

  • Fitness/Health/Gym
  • Cooking/Baking
  • Learning something new
  • Conversations
  • Quiet time

We would love to hear from you, it always encourages us to know you are listening along!

Jill's Top 5 Self-Care Activities11 Feb 202400:29:18

Special episode coming your way! Jill is exploring her top five self-care activities and Linda has a barrel of questions as to the who, what, where, when, and why they appear in this list. As mamas we might overlook the fact that we even have time for self-care and this episode is a great follow-up from last week in how Jill is demonstrating her self-care and being the living proof that she talks about. In no particular order, Jill’s top five are:

  • Grounding - barefoot outside
  • Walking
  • Church
  • Date night
  • Getting her nails done

Listen in for further explanation of each and laughs along the way.

Demonstrating Self-Care04 Feb 202400:23:02

We’ve spoken many words about self-care on this podcast so far, including how we are putting our conversations into action. How we demonstrate self-care to those around us and to ourselves enables our self-care muscles to grow stronger and more robust. Jill and Linda are talking about exactly what that means and touch on topics including:

  • Living proof leadership within our teams and family.
  • Commitment – Linda’s word of the year.
  • What values do we live every day?
  • How do we spend our spare time?
  • Actions speak louder than words - are we committed to what we say we will do or what we say we want?
  • Is it on the calendar?
  • Discipline /consistency.
  • Evidence of children mirroring self-care.

We would love to hear from you, it always encourages us to know you are listening along!
