GIRLS WITH GUTS explores post-modern feminism through interviews with primarily Vancouver area Canadian horror movie directors. In Carol Clover’s seminal academic paper on feminism in slasher movies (which ended up in her book “Men, Women
and Chainsaws”), she suggested what was original viewed as a misogynistic format was actually a much more subversive feminist arena with final girls emasculating the killer male force in the narratives. Now we get to see how far that path goes deep into the dark genre woods, with a coven of filmmakers that are conjuring up some very sick and terrific s**t, as it’s all murder, guts, and fun with this punk-style documentary.

Mark Davies interviews Tim Mackenzie-Smith (director/producer) about his documentary GETTING IT BACK: THE STORY OF CYMANDE which is featured as part of the 19th edition of the Calgary Underground FIlm Festival 2022. 

Cymande are the unsung heroes of hip hop, disco and a host of other genres, whose message of peace, love and funk sailed beyond Britain's shores and helped shape music for five decades. Long after they stopped playing, the music played on, so they returned to play some more.

In the racially turbulent UK of the early ‘70s, a group of black musicians came together in South London with a common love of rhythms and a message of peace. Cymande – with the dove as their symbol – combined jazz, funk, soul and Caribbean grooves to form a unique sound. Despite success in the USA they faced indifference in their native Britain, becoming disillusioned and disbanding. But the music lived on, as new generations of artists imbibed and reworked their pioneering sounds in fresh ways. From Soul II Soul to De La Soul, MC Solaar to The Fugees, the Dove had spread Cymande's message far and wide, prompting their return after forty years. This is their story. LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE traces the history of voting rights struggles in the United States from 1960 through the present day. The film draws parallels between the Mississippi voter registration drive of the early 1960's and North Carolina's 'Moral Monday' movement in the present day. A key goal of the film is connecting the dots between the generations to contextualize the current political environment surrounding race and voting.

The search takes viewers into the lives of precarious contract faculty and tells their compelling stories. We also hear from permanent faculty, students, administrators, activists and experts.

It's a gripping and masterful thriller in which an expert tailor (Mark Rylance) must outwit a dangerous group of mobsters in order to survive a fateful night.
