Thrive or Dive: How Your Environment Can Prevent Burnout25 Aug 202400:39:29

Have you ever considered that your environment could affect your results? Your environment is absolutely vital. Who you spend time with, where you spend your time and what you consume all contribute to your environment. Depending on what you're trying to succeed in, you may decide to surround yourself in different environments.

In this episode, I chat with Brian Dixon about how your environment and the culture you put yourself in can affect your productivity levels and can lead to burnout too. Brian talks from the perspective of a digital nomad lawyer, but he also shares a story about his dad who was a lawyer who suffered a heart attack and continued to complete his work before he sought medical help.

Brian Dixon is a New York registered attorney, but he travels the world whilst taking instructions from clients and helping them with contracts and business law.

Behind The Mic Ep.12: The Thinking Behind The Narcissism Episode26 Jul 202400:07:59

In this behind-the-scenes episode, I talk about the idea behind creating the "Unpacking Narcissism & Gaslighting in Law: The Root To Toxic Cultures? podcast episode with Alana Tart.

There are so many dynamics which occur in law firms, which unfortunately can encourage one of the greatest hallmarks that we put as being narcissistic behaviour.

Today I'm talking with Alana Tart. She is a fractional general counsel for SMEs and an executive coach and mindfulness teacher. Alana has told me that she understands gaslighting and narcissistic patterns intimately. She grew up around these behaviours. And in most of her workplaces, they have been accepted, if not rewarded.

In this conversation, we get into the nitty gritty of narcissistic behaviour in the legal industry, the psychology behind it, and how lawyers can recognize it and become almost immune to it, whilst keeping their career intact.

Alana understands gaslighting and narcissistic patterns intimately. In addition to lived expertise, she has psychology degrees, is a certified UK counsellor and a trained mindfulness and compassion teacher -- proven ways of both helping people become more immune to gaslighting and narcissism from others and also understanding how they can reduce these tendencies in themselves.

Alana Tart is dedicated to helping professionals reclaim their sense of self and power, especially when life feels like it's slipping or imploding.

Whether you're facing job insecurities or personal challenges, she helps you rebuild a solid foundation. If you're dealing with toxicity, she guides you through navigating, protecting yourself, and inoculating against future issues. For those seeking meaning, she reconnects you to your essence and helps you rediscover your path.

From Rock Bottom to Legal LinkedIn Mastery14 Jul 202400:33:30

Have you ever had a real passion for something, maybe art, acting, or music, but you ended up as a lawyer because it was the safe option?

We are all on our own paths but sometimes our passion and purpose don't align with our work.

Today I'm chatting with Tony Albrecht, LinkedIn ghostwriter for lawyers.

When he stopped practicing law in October 2021, he found himself digitally invisible. That was when he began focusing on LinkedIn.

Fifty-three weeks later, he committed fully to building a marketing agency dedicated to helping lawyers and leaders cultivate magnetic presences on this platform.

Despite the vast user base—over a billion worldwide and approximately 200 million in the United States—LinkedIn remains in the early stages of the content creation game.

He shares his story with us from law to LinkedIn ghostwriter for lawyers and gives some golden tips for lawyers wanting to crack the platform.

Anthony Albrecht  (Tony) is the founder of CONTENDER.

CONTENDER helps attorneys produce LinkedIn content that resonates with the people you want to reach, so they can Know, Like, and Trust you.

Do you want to become a digital nomad but you're not sure about where would be the best place to set up shop? This episode will help you understand how to choose your perfect location from a tax perspective strategically.

Welcome to the Digital Nomad Academy, a new mini-series which will help you master the art of living and working anywhere in the world.

Jowita Jablonska is a Managing Partner at IBCCS TAX CY. The company deals with tax planning, and corporate services and has offices in Cyprus, Estonia, Georgia and UAE.

She is also a founder of Nomads Club, assisting expats, freelancers, and entrepreneurs.

Nomads Club has a more personal approach towards individuals in search of the best jurisdictions to relocate and to start (or re-domicile) their business.

Jowita discusses the key factors that digital nomads and people looking to relocate to a different country need to consider for tax and residency purposes. She emphasizes the importance of considering lifestyle and quality of life in addition to tax rates when choosing a country. Jowita also highlights the need for strategic planning and keeping track of travel days and tax residency to minimize tax burdens. She provides insights into tax-friendly countries in the EU, such as Cyprus, Malta, Estonia, and Portugal, and explains the difference between non-dom status and being a digital nomad. Unpacking Narcissism & Gaslighting in Law: The Root of Toxic Cultures?30 Jun 202400:52:10

Narcissistic behaviour and gaslighting are rife in the legal industry. They can cause toxic cultures and well-being issues within firms.

Disclaimer: This is a longer episode than I would normally publish. However, I strongly believe that so many of you listening will not only resonate with what we talk about but will also find it highly valuable

There are so many dynamics which occur in law firms, which unfortunately can encourage one of the greatest hallmarks that we put as being narcissistic behaviour.

Reinventing Yourself After A Lifetime in Law: Is It Ever too Late To Quit?23 Jun 202400:36:48

Leaving the law, leaving your job, leaving anything is a big step for many. But leaving your law career just as you are a few years from retirement is risky to some and admirable to others.

Today I'm speaking with former trial lawyer, Renee Pardo who has done just this. She changed her career path after 30 years in law and years before qualifying for her pension.

So many people get to the end of their careers and regret not starting a business or leaving earlier. But today Renee is here to share her story about being a woman in law and about how she made the shift from lawyer to entrepreneur.

Renée Gloria Pardo is a former trial attorney with 30 years of legal experience. She spent the majority of her career trying criminal cases as a prosecutor and neglect and abuse cases in family court.

She is now a certified executive life coach and founder of Renee Pardo Coaching LLC where she primarily coaches women lawyers.

She can be reached at renee@reneepardocoaching.com and on LinkedIn.

Flexibility vs. Tradition: The New Rival in Law Firms07 Jun 202400:25:36

People are more picky about where they work, people are prioritising their mental health. This means law firms that don't consider this will potentially fall behind.

Bad leadership and toxic people can massively impact your well being. I've been there myself. In this chat with Liz Smith, Legal Headhunter, we cover how law firms can stand out as good places to be, how people can start recognizing non toxic places, and the future of law jobs.

Join us as we explore how the demand for work-life balance, remote work, and freelance/consultancy opportunities are challenging the established norms of legal practice.

Why Imposter Syndrome Is Rife In Law: Class, Culture & Childhood26 May 202400:34:45

We see lawyers as these highly confident, unstoppable machines. But in reality, many of them are struggling to keep their head above water. That's what Harley Street performance and anxiety specialist Olivia tells me.

Most partners and senior lawyers say they have had imposter syndrome at some point, especially women. In this episode, we get to the science and psychology behind imposter syndrome, why lawyers get it and how to combat it.

What's interesting is that imposter syndrome can actually lead to people working longer hours to try and improve themselves, not being comfortable to ask questions, being afraid to stand up for themselves, and staying in toxic work cultures because they don't feel they're good enough to work anywhere else. I'm sure that this will resonate with many lawyers.

Olivia James specializes in helping legal professionals overcome performance anxiety. We talk about the science behind why we can get hot and flustered and lose the ability to talk and think whilst in important meetings, pitches or presentations and how our stress levels can be linked to our ability to speak in a courtroom or in a meeting.

Live Without Regrets: Find Your Purpose In Or Out Of Law19 May 202400:30:28

Too many lawyers get halfway through their careers and are just not fulfilled. They dread Monday mornings, and most days are a chore.

If this is you, this is your sign to approach things differently. In this episode, I'm talking with Emma Roche. She is a practicing Legal 500 lawyer with a side business as a philosophical life coach.

She is proof that you can continue in your legal role (if you love it) whilst also living your purpose and doing what you're passionate about, if it isn't law.

Emma is a Certified Integrative Coach having completed an evidence based Accredited Certificate in Integrative Coaching with the School of Positive Transformation. She is also trained as a philosophically informed life coach.

Visit Emma's website here: https://www.emma-roche.com/

Emma is also of counsel (Commercial Real Estate) at BDB Pitmans.

"Aristotle talks about eudaimonia and flourishing, and what we have to do to flourish. "Flourishing" being a kind of happiness where you are just constantly growing."

Background:

Emma has had a lifelong passion for philosophy that began in school. Driven by her enthusiasm, she successfully campaigned to have philosophy added to the A-level syllabus. This early dedication led her to pursue a degree in philosophy at university. Now, she's come full circle, using philosophy as a practical tool for seeking clarity and understanding in her own life and in helping others.

Liz says usually, to become a partner, you need to show a detailed business plan with clients, marketing strategies, and ways to grow your client base. But things are changing.

We're looking ahead to a time when a lawyer might say, "My business plan is my LinkedIn profile." This is already happening, especially among legal pros in new tech or legal tech. An impressive LinkedIn profile, can significantly accelerate a lawyer's journey to partnership.

In this conversation, we also discuss why it's a good idea for lawyers to create a personal brand, especially on LinkedIn. We talk about how this is useful for both new and experienced lawyers, stressing the need to be genuine and relatable.

We also touch on how personal branding affects hiring and headhunting in the future. The conversation ends with tips on using personal branding to negotiate salaries, explore different careers, and conquer the fear of showcasing oneself.
