Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 47, "Colossal"24 Mar 202101:21:35

The crew watches 2016's "Colossal" and ask themselves two questions that have plagued humankind since the beginning of recorded time, "What IS a monster movie?" and "Does a monster movie have to be scary?"

Scott's aptly named "Colossal" cocktail was a hit.

"Colossal" cocktail

1.5 oz Banana Rum

1 oz. Grenadine

1 tbs. simple syrup

1 large egg white

Ice

1 oz. 7up, Sprite or Club Soda

 Garnish with maraschino cherry.

In a cocktail shaker, combine the Banana Rum, Grenadine, simple syrup, and egg white. Shake at least 1 min. Add ice and shake again. Strain into an ice-filled Old Fashioned glass, stir in the 7up and garnish with maraschino cherry.

Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 46, "The Witch"10 Mar 202101:25:39

Step back to the 1630's as our intrepid crew head into the Massachusetts wilderness and encounter Robert Egger's 2016 film,  "The Witch".

"The Witch of the Wood" cocktail

1 1/2 oz. Sweet Vermouth or Cocchi Americano Aperitif Wine
1 1/2 oz. Gin
1 1/2 oz. Sour Cherry Liqueur
Stir with ice
Strain into short glass and garnish with maraschino cherry - though a fancy-schmancy "dirty" cherry is even better!

Monster Movie Happy Hour/Castle of Horror, Ep. 45 - "House of the Long Shadows"03 Mar 202102:23:30

The crew were guests on the Castle of Horror podcast and had a blast chatting about 1983's "House of the Long Shadows". We love those folks, and couldn't stop talking . . .

The cocktail is from Vincent Price's 1965 A Treasury of Great Recipes

Juice of 1/2 lime
1/2 cup crushed ice
3/4 ounce dark rum
1 maraschino cherry
1 orange slice

  1. Put into a cocktail shaker or electric blender the light rum, pineapple juice, lime juice and crushed ice.
  2. Shake well, or if you are using a blender, cover and blend on high speed for about 10 seconds to mix thoroughly.
  3. Pour into a zombie glass or hollowed pineapple shell. Top with dark rum and decorate with the cherry and orange slice on a pick.

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 44, "The Dunwich Horror"24 Feb 202101:46:19

The crew takes a LONG, strange trip through 1970's, "The Dunwich Horror", starring Sandra Dee and Dean Stockwell and a lot of psychedelic imagery.

Dave's cocktail offering is, essentially, a pretty gin and tonic with a hint of melon and orange. It's name was inspired by Lovecraft's description of the main character, Wilbur Whateley. Well . . . not the green part . . .  but certainly the goat part.

"The Green Goat" cocktail:

1 oz. Gin
1 to 2 oz. Midori
1/2 oz. Blue Curacao
Pour over ice in Collins Glass
4 oz. Tonic Water
Garnish with Orange Slice and Cherry

Enjoy!

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 42, "Altered States"27 Jan 202101:28:31

Scott, Mary and Dave take a freaky retro-trip down the rabbit hole that IS Ken Russell's 1980 Sci-Fi film,  "Altered States".

The cocktail this time out is Mary's "Psychedelic"

Pour into a large glass -
1 oz. Grenadine
Add a handful of ice
Next add 6 oz. can of Pineapple juice - poured over the back of a spoon.
Shake the following ingredients with ice, then pour into the tall glass over the back of a spoon.
2 oz. Vodka
2 oz. Blue Curacao
Garnish with citrus. Mary used a Mandaquat . . . yes, that is a thing.

Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 41, "The Mortuary Collection"13 Jan 202101:41:43

The crew dive into one of the more recent films to come out, 2019's anthology starring Clancy Brown - "The Mortuary Collection".  They have a LOT to say about it - and other things. Are you surprised?

Dave's drink for this episode is the  "Clancy Brown" cocktail - not a great name, we admit, but Dave thinks it's "right" tasty. Give it a try!

"Clancy Brown" cocktail

2 oz. Scotch
1/2 oz. Creme de Cacao
1/4 - 1/2 oz. Drambuie

Pour ingredients in Old Fashioned glass.
Stir.
Fill with ice.
Enjoy.

Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 40, "The Curse of Frankenstein"30 Dec 202001:43:25

It's Hammer Time in the Deep Dark Lounge!

Mary, Scott and Dave take a look at one of the first big horror hits from Hammer Studios, 1957's, "The Curse of Frankenstein", starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

Mary waxes eloquent about all things Cushing, Lee and Hammer - and the boys agree. Once again, the crew is apparently incapable of recording a short episode. Curses and apologies abound.

Scott's cocktail, The Monster, was a big hit. Just ask Dave how many he consumed during the recording . . .

1.5 oz. Creme de menthe (green)
1.5 oz. Creme de cacao (clear or brown)
1.5 oz. Cream

Shake with ice, strain into a Collins glass and add a dash or two of blood . . . erm . . .  Rose's Grenadine, for garnish.

Enjoy.

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 39, "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter"16 Dec 202001:36:49

The gang step back to the mid-1800's and watch "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter".
Not surprisingly, the History Trio have specific feelings about this movie. Mary takes inspiration from the REAL reason Lincoln's mother died when he was a boy, and she creates a  historical cocktail around it.

Yum!

Milk Punch (Sweet and deadly)

Recipe to follow . . .

1 tsp. fine white sugar

2 oz. rum or whiskey

6 oz. cold milk

5 drops of orange bitters

  1. Shake in ice filled cocktail shaker
  2. Strain into an “Olde Tyme” glass or cup.
  3. Grate fresh nutmeg on top.

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 134, "The Hand"31 Jul 202401:37:20

The crew gasps in horror (and giggles) as Michael Caine's character loses his hand in 1981, "The Hand", from writer/director Oliver Stone. Sir Michael may have been simply been paying for his garage with this baby, but it WAS quite entertaining.

“The Severed Hand” cocktail

1.5 oz. Spiced Rum
75 oz. Cherry Liqueur
.33 oz. fresh-squeezed lemon juice
.75 oz. fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice
.33 oz. simple syrup
6 drops of pimento bitters

Shake all ingredients in an ice-filled shaker and strain into a coupe glass. Garner with a twist of lemon and a maraschino cherry.

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 38, "Terrified"02 Dec 202001:41:17

Mary, Scott and Dave head WAY south of the border and are unnerved by the 2017 Argentinian horror movie, ("Aterrados")"Terrified".  When not being scared out of their minds, they spend a LOT of time talking about adult toys. Hmmm . . .

The drink of choice is, appropriately enough, the "Argentine" cocktail - not an original recipe, but Dave swears by it. You can find it here:

https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/2255/argentina-cocktail

"Argentine" cocktail

1 oz. Dry Gin
1 oz. Dry Vermouth
1/4 oz. Benedictine D.O.M.
1/4 oz. Triple Sec
1 dash Angostura Orange Bitters
1 dash Angostura Aromatic Bitters

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 34 "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms"06 Oct 202001:36:49

The crew watch 1953's iconic "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms", featuring the amazing stop-motion effects of Ray Harryhausen and a pretty cool 1950's apartment interior.

Dave introduces the "Whiskey Smash" in honor of the Arctic opening of the movie and the hard whiskey-drinking actor, Lee van Cleef, who plays the REAL hero of the movie.

Cheers!

"Whiskey Smash"

2 oz. of Whiskey
1/2 of a lemon, quartered
7 mint leaves
1 tbsp simple syrup (or a sugar cube with splash of soda water)
crushed ice

Muddle mint leaves, quartered lemon pieces and simple syrup in mixing glass, just enough to release juices and oils. Add bourbon. Transfer to Old Fashioned glass filled 1/2 with crushed ice, stir, then add more crushed ice. Garnish with spring of mint.

1 1/2 oz Gin
3/4 oz Chartreuse
dash Orange Bitters

Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 32, "It - The Terror From Beyond Space"09 Sep 202001:22:35

The crew are once again confined to the chambers of the Deep Dark Lounge by their murderous computer, HAL Junior, and spend their time sipping cocktails and watching monster movies. This time out, they watch and chat about 1958's "It - The Terror From Beyond Space" and Scott gives his cocktail recipe a serious testing. A VERY serious testing . . .

"The Terror"cocktail -
(Note - NOT named for the failed 1845-48 Franklin Expedition OR the 1963 Roger Corman movie.)

In a Collin's glass with ice, combine:

1 oz. Jagermeister
1 oz. Gin
1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
A dash of Maraschino Cherry juice

Monster Movie Happy Hour Ep. 31, Monstrous Musings with "The Unfamiliar"25 Aug 202001:04:14

We have a lovely chat with actors Jemima West and Christopher Dane, as well as director and co-writer Henk Pretorious, about their supernatural horror film, "The Unfamiliar". We enjoy hearing about the filmmaking process, and they graciously gave us plenty of stories from the making of this dark and twisting tale.

Cheers to the folks who make the movies - we appreciate all your hard work!

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 30, "Suspiria"19 Aug 202001:22:25

A good time was had by all while watching Dario Argento's 1977 "Suspiria" . . . perhaps too good. There are a lot of false starts and endings to our rambling conversation, which encompasses everything from door knockers and "The Last Drive In with Joe Bob Briggs" to (euphemistic) 'night sticks' and . . . the ACTUAL MOVIE.

This was recorded outside, in Dave's backyard drive-in theater, complete with the sound of overhead planes and speeding cars.

This time around there is a special "Giallo" inspired cocktail video, which you can check out right here on our YouTube channel!

Our cocktail was Mary Chalman's "Bava". Fine, but strong, just like Mary herself.
Mary's "Bava" cocktail

Fill Old Fashioned glass half full of ice.
Add -
1.5 oz. Chambord
.5 oz. Amaretto
1 oz. Coconut Rum
Top off with Prosecco.

"Salute!"

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 29, "The House of Usher"05 Aug 202001:27:11

The crew watch Corman's 1960 "The House of Usher" from the backyard Drive-In of the Deep Dark Lounge.

Curiously, while the overheard air traffic and passing cars were loud enough, the murderous computer HAL Jr. was noticeably quiet . . . should we be concerned?

In honor of star Vincent Price's role as America's (literal) arbiter of taste, everybody made a dish to share and Scott made "Vincent Price's New Fashioned Cocktail".

Yum.

Vincent Price’s New Fashioned Cocktail

1 lump of sugar

3 dashes Angostura bitters

1 1/2 ounces light Canadian whiskey

Splash of club soda

1 twist lemon

1 cherry

Place the sugar in a glass. Add the bitters and club soda, then stir with a spoon to dissolve the sugar. Add the whiskey, ice cube and garnish with the twist and the cherry.

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 133, "The Reflecting Skin"17 Jul 202401:15:44

The crew are still processing their thoughts about the hard-to-classify film, 1990's "The Reflecting Skin". It's a good thing they are all of a bright and cheerful disposition . . .

Whew.

Scott's cocktail is MIGHTY fine - and much more uplifting than the movie.

"The Flaming Dove” cocktail

Ingredients:
.75 oz butterscotch schnapps
.50 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
.25 oz Grenadine or Raspberry Syrup
.50 oz 151 Rum

Instructions:

- use spoon to gently pour Irish Cream over schnapps in separate layer.
- pour grenadine or syrup in same manner.
- top with 151 Rum.
- sprinkle lightly with cinnamon & nutmeg (optional)
- light surface of drink with lighter. Spices should “spark” as ignited.

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 27, "The Horror of Dracula"15 Jul 202001:22:53

From their comfy chairs in the backyard (?) Drive-In of the Deep Dark Lounge, the crew watch Mary's boyfriend, Sir Christopher Lee, in Hammer's 1958 "The Horror of Dracula". Ambient sound from the mosquito-infested above-ground environment includes the occasional passing jet, car or ice cream truck. Yes, you read that correctly.

Owing to the heat, the special cocktail and their evident joy at being together within 6 to 8 feet of each other, Mary, Scott and Dave are even giddier than usual. Please accept their profound apologies for the silliness . . .

"The Count" cocktail.

1 oz. sweet red vermouth
1 oz. Italian red bitter liqueur

In this Monstrous Musings episode, Scott, Mary and Dave spend a fun evening chatting, by video, with Minneapolis - based Special make-up FX artist, Ryan Schaddelee.

While there was no unique cocktail for the evening, Ryan's enthusiasm was, in itself, a tonic for our dark, twisted souls . . .

Cheers!

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 25, "Isle of the Dead"01 Jul 202001:20:11

The crew set up an outdoor theater behind the Deep Dark Lounge and watch Boris Karloff in the underrated 1945 gothic tale, "Isle of the Dead'. This episode also includes an audio recording of the time they discovered a "Book of the Dead" while searching for the murderous computer HAL Junior's hidden control panel.

The special cocktail, given the Greek island locale, is Ouzo and Coke!

1 shot of Ouzo
1/2 shot of Blue Curacao
6 oz. cola-flavored soda

Pretty simple - poor the Ouzo and Blue Curacao over ice in an Old Fashioned glass, top off with soda . . . enjoy!

You will hear occasional background noise as vehicles pass by, but the recording turned out better than it had any right to!

To top things off, Mary created a new cocktail for the occasion, and it is MOST refreshing.

Enjoy!

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 19 - Monstrous Musings 3 with Jason Henderson11 May 202000:52:36

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 18, "Equinox"29 Apr 202000:58:49

The crew hunker down in their isolated chambers but still manage to watch 1970's "Equinox", a low - budget movie that brought us special effects wizards Dennis Muren, Dave Allen and Jim Danforth. It also brought us Frank Bonner, the man who played Herb on "WKRP in Cincinnati." What's there not to love????

Mary and Scott foolishly allow Dave to create another cocktail - guess what? This one ALSO has a hint of anise flavor in it. Surprised?

The Equinox cocktail

  • 3 ounces Calvados (French apple brandy)
  • 1 1/2 ounces fresh lemon juice, from about 2 lemons
  • 1 1/2 ounces spiced syrup - see below.
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: 2 lemon twists

For the cocktail: fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add Calvados, lemon juice, spiced syrup, and bitters into shaker and shake until well chilled, about 15 seconds. Strain into two cocktail glasses, dividing evenly. Garnish each glass with a lemon twist.

For the spiced syrup: Measure the water and sugar into a pot and stir together. Add cloves, star anise, and cinnamon sticks. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves completely. Reduce heat and let simmer 15 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour into a sealable container and refrigerate for 24 hours. Finely strain and use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

Note - Dave used ready made mulling spices instead of cloves, star anise and cinnamon sticks, as the ingredients were all there.

This recipe was taken from the Serious Eats website -
"Kevin Martin's Equinox has become a favorite at Boston's Eastern Standard—it offers an autumnal twist on the classic sour. With apple-based Calvados, a savory spiced syrup, and that lemony kick, it's sure to be a home standard, too."

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 15, "Caltiki, the Immortal Monster"01 Apr 202001:21:09

The crew encounter the ancient, slumbering horror that IS "Caltiki, the Immortal Monster", a 1959 Italian film that was (in part) an early effort by horror maestro Mario Bava. We also sample a "unique" cocktail . . .

Note - This is the last episode that was recorded before Scott spilled a toxic liquid on the floor of the Deep Dark Lounge, forcing everyone to seek indefinite shelter in separate chambers. As a result, the sound quality is better than what will inevitably follow for the foreseeable future. Cheers?

"The Caltiki" cocktail

 Ingredients:

  •     3/4 ounce peach liqueur
  •     1/2 ounce Irish cream (Preferably chilled)
  •     1/4 ounce blue curacao
  •     Splash grenadine

Directions:

Pour the peach liqueur into a shot glass.

Gently pour the Irish cream into the shot glass to create a floating layer on top. If necessary, drizzle the Irish cream over the bottom of a spoon or knife to help control the pour.

From several inches above the shot glass, pour in the blue curacao, followed by the grenadine syrup.

Monster Movie Happy Hour, Ep. 14 - Monstrous Musings 2 31 Mar 202000:29:50

In this Monstrous Musings episode, the crew chat with the folks from Pollen Path Entertainment, who, at the time of this post, are trying to finance their feature-length horror film, "Captive". Owing to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 outbreak, this long-distance episode was recorded using Zoom technology and the audio quality is less than stellar. Nevertheless, we felt it was important that we share this honest, behind-the-scenes look at the work required to bring monsters to the screen.

We also chat about the excellent movie, "We Are Still Here", and Scott's childhood encounter with eyeless fish  . . .

Monster Movie Happy Hour, episode 9, "The Wind"05 Feb 202001:01:52

Under assault from blowing winds, Mary, Scott and Dave hunker down in the Deep Dark Lounge. A shot of bourbon and a glass of refreshing, non-alcoholic sarsaparilla fortify the crew's nerves as they watch and discuss Emma Tammi's 2018 supernatural western horror film, "The Wind".

To relieve their sense of isolation and growing despair, they chat about the recent BBC "Dracula" adaptation, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and an alternate universe filled to overflowing with Scott Chesebrough clones. Shudder . . .

The cocktail this time out was simply a shot glass of "Mixed Blood" bourbon, created by  Du Nord Craft Spirits, the crew's favorite local distiller in Minneapolis. You can contact them here -

* 6 drops bitters

* ice
