How to Help Your Tween or Teen Regulate Their Emotions (and Stay Calm Yourself!) with Lisa Danahy18 Nov 202500:50:30

Send us a text

It’s so easy to lose it when our kids’ emotions are running high. We tell them to “calm down,” and before we know it… we’re yelling too.

If that sounds familiar, you’re going to love this episode.

My special guest, Lisa Danahy, is a certified yoga therapist, educator, and founder of Create Calm. She’s spent more than 35 years helping kids, parents, and teachers learn practical ways to manage big emotions, regulate their nervous systems, and create more calm at home, in classrooms, and within themselves.

Lisa shares some beautiful, down-to-earth tools you can start using right away — from “balloon breathing” to simple co-regulation practices that help both you and your kids reset in the heat of the moment. These are the kinds of things that actually work when your tween refuses to get out of bed, your teen is rolling their eyes, or you feel your own patience slipping.

You’ll walk away feeling encouraged, equipped, and reminded that calm isn’t about control — it’s about connection.

Grab your coffee, take a deep breath, and join us for this hopeful, heart-centered conversation.

How Executive Functioning Impacts Tweens & Teens and What You Can Do To Help, Interview wtih Dr. Anna Levy-Warren 11 Nov 202500:51:12

Send us a text

In this insightful conversation, Dr. Anna Levy-Warren, a licensed clinical psychologist and founder of Organizational Tutors, breaks down the concept of executive functioning (EF)—the brain processes that help kids and teens organize, plan, focus, and manage their emotions. Discover how everyday tasks like getting ready for school, homework, and handling transitions can feel overwhelming for both kids and parents. Dr. Levy-Warren shares actionable strategies to help families support their tweens and teens with EF challenges, while also addressing the role of anxiety and how to manage family dynamics.

Key takeaways & tips:

  • Use visual timers so time is seen, not just spoken.
  • Do a 5-minute “start together”: help list the first 2–3 steps, then step back.
  • Work backward from the real due date, including life events (games, birthdays, church, work).
  • Expect a lag in shifting; name it and give a bridge (“Finish that last sentence, then let’s move to shoes”).
  • Lead with repair over guilt: “I got activated. I’m sorry. Let’s try that again.”
  • Model what you want to see: put your own phone away, breathe, open your calendar.

A Mother's Journey To Herself, Interview with Kim Muench08 Sep 202100:40:22

Send us a text

Today I'm interviewing Kim Muench, a certified parenting coach and the founder of the Real Life Parent Guide, and the author of the recent book, Becoming Me While Raising You: A Mother's Journey to Her Self.

In May 2008, Kim Muench received a call from the eldest of her five children, twenty-year-old son Nick, who confessed that his life was being destroyed by alcohol abuse. During his spiral through the darkness, Kim worked with her son to help him find long-term sobriety. But she knew that he was not the only person who needed to change. So, while she partnered with her family in her son’s recovery, she also began to make her own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being a priority. Knowing parenthood was her greatest role, Kim sought to uncover the limiting beliefs she had developed in childhood that were infecting the relationships she’d built with those she loved the most. Kim made a conscious choice to parent in a different light.

Kim’s amazing story will challenge and inspire you.

We discuss how our childhoods impact the way we parent our own kids.
How we formed core beliefs that limit us and our kids.
How hard it is to watch our kids struggle and not enable them. And the growth that can come from their struggle.
The importance of connecting with ourselves and our own inner wisdom.
And so much more good stuff!!

Hi Friend,

I’m so glad that you’re listening in today. I’m talking to my new friend Kelly Hatcher who has been such an inspiration to me and I know she will be to you too when you hear her story.

Kelly has her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and her Master’s in Counseling. Kelly is a single mom and has two boys. Her oldest has been struggling with substance use for the past ten years. She spent many years thinking she was helping her son while her world around her was falling apart. After trying everything from loving, tough love, enabling, and boundaries she kept giving in to, she finally found a Family Recovery Coach that helped her understand what she was and wasn’t doing correctly to help her son. Once she learned the various tools, her relationship with her son and with herself changed completely.

Kelly became a Nationally Certified Family Recovery Coach and Interventionist and started her own business at New Day Family Recovery. She now helps families who are working through their own recovery in this family disease.

Suicide Awareness: Answers We Need with Jason Reid30 Jun 202100:44:24

Send us a text

When it comes to our tweens and teens' mental health, we are in a crisis. And we have to talk about it even though we might not want to.

Parents are asking,

How can you tell the difference between a moody teenager and one that is struggling with depression or is at high risk for hurting themselves?

What are the signs that you should get help?

And how do you talk to your tween or teen in a way that they will want to talk to you if and when they are struggling with mental health issues?

My guest today, is Jason Reid.  Jason just came out with a powerful film - “Tell My Story” that just aired on PBS.

Jason’s son Ryan took his life when he was 14, leaving two Post-It Notes: one was the passcode to his computer; the second said “Tell My Story.”

Jason set off on a quest to understand what led his son to end his own life, and what he could have done differently.

He is here today, to share what he has learned and how to have difficult but necessary conversations with our kids.

When Everything Changes: A Family's Journey After A Heartbreaking Accident That Happened To Their Son28 Mar 202100:56:52

Send us a text

Today you are going to hear an incredibly powerful story.

I’m with Pat and Tammy McLeod who have written the book Hit Hard, One Family’s Journey of Letting Go of What Was and Learning To Live Well With What Is. And I could not put it down.

In the fall of 2008 Pat and Tammy’s son Zach collapsed on a high school football field; and sustained a severe brain injury. And they were faced with the devastating reality that things would never be the same for their beloved son.

I really wanted to have them on the show because each one of us has experienced grief and losses in our lives and yet I’ve found that we often don’t know how to deal with our grief, pain, and losses - it can be a complex and lonely journey - one that we want to avoid at all costs.

In this interview, you will hear Tammy and Pat’s journey of how they have walked and continue to walk through ambiguous loss.  I was so drawn to both of them - their faith and honesty. I felt like I was on sacred ground and I believe you will feel the same too when you hear what they have to share.

Body Image: Helping Our Daughters To Love, Appreciate & Care For Their Bodies / Interview with Dr. Charlotte Markey16 Mar 202100:44:51

Send us a text

How many of us are dissatisfied with our bodies?

I grew up drinking Tab and wishing I looked like Farrah Fawcett, maybe you wished you looked like Brooke Shields or Jennifer Anniston, or Madonna.

If we thought it was tough to accept and love our bodies and ourselves back then imagine what it must be like for our girls today. And it can be an on-going challenge to appreciate our bodies and to support our daughters to do the same.

Today, I’m talking with world-leading body image expert and psychology professor Dr. Charlotte Markey about helping our girls to understand, accept, and appreciate their bodies and her latest book, The Body Image Book for girls, Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearless.

We talk about the diet culture, some of the things that we do or say that are unhelpful and can even be damaging to our girls and how can we set a good example with their own eating and exercise habits and self-talk.

Trying to convince a middle schooler to listen to you can be frustrating - they begin to pull away, they don’t want to be seen with you, and oftentimes all they want to do is be with their friends or locked away in their room.

Today I am talking with Michelle Icard who just released her latest book, “Fourteen Talks by Age Fourteen: The Essential Conversations You Need to Have with Your Kids Before They Start High School.

Talking to Our Kids About What Happened At The Capitol 12 Jan 202100:20:46

Send us a text

As parents, it’s been a year of difficult conversations with our children about the virus, and political upheaval, and rioting. And this past week we’ve watched as protestors in Washington D.C. stormed the Capitol on Wednesday.

Our tweens and teens are seeing all of this. It's upsetting.

What do we say? How do we navigate all of this and answer their questions if they’re even asking and if they’re not and they’re quiet how do we talk about this mess when we’re having a hard time processing it?

In this episode, I'm not going to talk about anything political. I want to support you to use this tragic event as an opportunity to check in with them and find out what they're hearing and how they're feeling and to discuss how to deal with disagreements and conflict in healthy ways, how to take what is happening in our world and do good, and other important conversations that we need to be having with our kids as we wrestle through the chaos, uncertainty, and confusion around us.

Let's jump in!

Raising Sons To Be Good Men (the joys and challenges) with Kara Lewis05 Jan 202100:46:41

Send us a text

If you’re a mom of a boy - you are well aware that there is no manual that can possibly prepare you for the unique joys and challenges of raising a son.

And when they hit the tween and teen years there are a lot of changes - you may be finding your once sweet, affectionate son is beginning to pull away, they may talk less and not include you in how they’re doing.

Or they may resist your advice. You may be finding it difficult to know how to connect with them and support them when they’re struggling.

These are all topics that Kara Lewis and I discuss in this interview.

Kara has had a lot of experience as the lucky mom of four boys.

Kara founded TheJoysofBoys.com in 2012 as a way to celebrate the little men in her life and has now grown into a resource that connects parents of boys with family-focused activities, parenting advice, and support to help them to connect and communicate with their sons to bring out the best in them.

Kara has published two journals, A Mother and Her Son: A Shared Journal Adventure and A Father and His Son: A Shared Journal Adventure.  These journals help parents connect with their sons in a fun way.

How to Support Your Tween or Teen When They Have No Friends with Special Guest Sheri Gazitt23 Oct 202400:44:18

Send us a text

Today, we're going to be talking about how to help our tweens and teens who are struggling with friendships, and this is really painful as a mom.

If you have a kid who is lonely and is struggling with girl drama, it might look a little bit different if you have a boy, but they have their version of that. If they're spending a lot of time isolated and alone in their room, they're not connecting outside of social media. Maybe they've even been bullied or excluded from friend groups, and they can see that on social media, and then it can be so complicated when they have social media and all that goes with that. When it comes to friendships, it can just complicate things, and they can compare themselves. It can be really rough, and it can be difficult to know what to say and what to do that's going to help.

And I hear from so many of you emailing me that you're saying, "Gosh, my kid is getting left out. They're lonely. They're spending all their time gaming, or they're coming home and crying every day because their best friend won't let them sit at the lunch table."

It takes on many different forms, and my special guest today is Sheri Gazitt, the CEO and founder of Teen Wise. It is an organization that empowers teen girls to conquer girl drama and establish healthy friendships. And she does private coaching. They have online courses, presentations, and professional trainings. She has been on the podcast before, and she has so much wisdom and insight and a really beautiful way of taking it all and making it really simple and easy to understand. And in this episode, she talks to us about what we can do to help our kids.

So let's dive in!

Finish College in High School: A Debt-Free Path with Shelley Branine (This blew my mind!)04 Nov 202500:38:47

Send us a text

In this episode, I had the privilege of sitting down with Shelley Branine, and let me tell you—this conversation blew me away. Shelley is a truth seeker, freedom fighter, wife, and warrior mom of two amazing daughters—one of whom actually graduated from college just a week before finishing high school.

As a mom myself, I was inspired hearing her story of how she navigated the college process with her girls and discovered the power of dual enrollment. Shelley explains how high school students can take college courses—often for free or at very little cost—and how this path not only saves families significant time and money but also gives students incredible confidence and real-world experience.

I loved how Shelley shared not just the wins but also her own struggles with student loan debt, the misconceptions about dual enrollment, and the truth about scholarships and college athletics. She brings so much clarity to a topic that feels overwhelming for so many parents and students.

If you’ve ever wondered about alternatives to the traditional (and expensive) college route, this episode is full of hope and practical steps. You’ll walk away knowing how to start the conversation with your guidance counselor, what questions to ask, and how to explore this smarter, debt-free option for your family.

Shelley’s upcoming book, Finish College in High School (coming early 2026), will be an incredible resource, but for now, I can’t wait for you to hear her wisdom and encouragement in this episode.
