Send us a text

Hi friend. Welcome to the show today, and I am so glad that you're spending time with me.

In today's episode, we are talking about the tough process of letting go. Letting is one of the most difficult things when your your kid hits the middle school years - you're in this big transition, and I found this so hard -  "When do I step in? When do I step back?"

It's hard to let go when you watch them making decisions that you're not crazy about and you want them to be successful, and you want them to make good decisions. And that is all well and good, but without meaning to we often get in the way.

Today, my special guest is Dr. Cam Coswell, and she is also known as the Teen Translator. Dr. Cam is a wealth of knowledge and experience on adolescent development and how you can build trust and help your kid to become more independent and confident and to build those necessary skills that our kids need as they move towards adulthood.

You are going to love this episode. You're going to get so much good stuff, and you're going to feel so much better that you are not alone as we talk about our own challenges and struggles as well.

So let's dive in!

Talking to Our Kids About What Happened At The Capitol 12 Jan 202100:20:46

Send us a text

As parents, it’s been a year of difficult conversations with our children about the virus, and political upheaval, and rioting. And this past week we’ve watched as protestors in Washington D.C. stormed the Capitol on Wednesday.

Our tweens and teens are seeing all of this. It's upsetting.

What do we say? How do we navigate all of this and answer their questions if they’re even asking and if they’re not and they’re quiet how do we talk about this mess when we’re having a hard time processing it?

In this episode, I'm not going to talk about anything political. I want to support you to use this tragic event as an opportunity to check in with them and find out what they're hearing and how they're feeling and to discuss how to deal with disagreements and conflict in healthy ways, how to take what is happening in our world and do good, and other important conversations that we need to be having with our kids as we wrestle through the chaos, uncertainty, and confusion around us.

Let's jump in!

Raising Sons To Be Good Men (the joys and challenges) with Kara Lewis05 Jan 202100:46:41

Send us a text

If you’re a mom of a boy - you are well aware that there is no manual that can possibly prepare you for the unique joys and challenges of raising a son.

And when they hit the tween and teen years there are a lot of changes - you may be finding your once sweet, affectionate son is beginning to pull away, they may talk less and not include you in how they’re doing.

Or they may resist your advice. You may be finding it difficult to know how to connect with them and support them when they’re struggling.

These are all topics that Kara Lewis and I discuss in this interview.

Kara has had a lot of experience as the lucky mom of four boys.

Kara founded TheJoysofBoys.com in 2012 as a way to celebrate the little men in her life and has now grown into a resource that connects parents of boys with family-focused activities, parenting advice, and support to help them to connect and communicate with their sons to bring out the best in them.

Kara has published two journals, A Mother and Her Son: A Shared Journal Adventure and A Father and His Son: A Shared Journal Adventure.  These journals help parents connect with their sons in a fun way.

Send us a text

Welcome friend,

I am super honored to have Rachel Marie Martin on the show today. If you don’t recognize her name, she is the writer behind the site FindingJoy.net.

She’s written about divorce, heartbreak and reconnecting with an estranged child, dealing with an autoimmune disease in her youngest, feeling overwhelmed with littles, living through financial crises,  waiting up for teens, and simply being overwhelmed and overjoyed by the day in, day out demands of motherhood.

A second marriage, co-parenting, being a bonus (step) mom to four more amazing people, moving across the country, anxiety, and being an entrepreneur and coach.

She believes in the power of the human spirit to overcome, to thrive and to find deep joy, and because of that, she pours out her heart via her site and so many platforms she has written for.

She recently released her latest book, Mom Enough: Inspiring Letters for the Wonderfully Exhausting but Totally Normal Days of Motherhood, where she offers encouragement for moms by sharing over 40 personal letters through her journey.

Calming The Chaos Raising Challenging Tweens and Teens with Dayna Abraham05 Dec 202300:30:54

Send us a text

On today's episode, we're joined by the incredible Dayna Abraham. Dayna Abraham has become a trusted and proven leader in the parenting community. An award-winning, national board-certified educator who has spent over ten years in the classroom, she is the founder of the popular parenting site Lemon Lime Adventures.

She is also the CEO of Calm the Chaos, a seven-figure company that offers support to thousands of parents worldwide. Today we discuss Dayna’s recent book, Calm The Chaos and we talk about parenting a challenging kid and Dayna shares the importance of how we can shift our perspective of how we view our kids and their challenging behaviors AND she shares some great nuggets from her book that will help to ground us in the heat of the challenging moments while finding calm in the chaos.

Here are some key talking points from the interview:

  • As an educator, she noticed that kids with behavioral issues often had more going on beneath the surface, and she wanted to find ways to support them.
  • Dana shares her personal journey of dealing with her eldest son's challenging behavior, including being kicked out of preschool and frequent suspensions.
  • Dana discusses the shift in mindset needed when dealing with challenging behaviors in children. Instead of seeing the behavior as attacks or violence, she emphasizes the importance of understanding that the child is struggling and needs support.
  • Dana introduces four key ingredients for addressing challenges: connection, understanding, empowerment, and the parent being grounded. These ingredients provide a framework that can be adapted to each unique family and child, acknowledging that there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
  • Anchors are tools or phrases that ground parents in the heat of challenging moments. Examples include using a memory anchor, such as picturing the child as a baby, or simple phrases like "there is no bear" to signal safety to the brain.
  • Dana shares a powerful example of a conversation with her son highlighting the importance of empowering discussions rather than enforcing strict boundaries.

What Our Kids Need to Know When They Are College Bound with Dr. Jill Grimes28 Nov 202300:52:32

Send us a text

Welcome to the show today.

When our kids leave for college, it can be an exciting time but also a scary time. When our kids are in our home, we may have an illusion of control or at least some influence on their decisions and keeping them safe and now we can’t make sure that they are okay.

Then they leave, and we worry - will they make good decisions? Will they be okay? What if they are sick and don’t tell me or go to the doctor if it’s serious? Will they make friends? What if they are feeling homesick or anxious or depressed, or what if they go to a party and binge drink?

It can be a really helpless feeling AND we know that it’s a necessary part of growing up to give them the space and opportunity to make their own decisions, figure things out, and not to be calling them all the time.

Well Dr. Jill Grimes is here to help us. She is an award-winning author of the the humorous and evidence-based “The ULTIMATE College Student Health Handbook: Your Guide for Everything from Hangovers to Homesickness” She is passionate about prevention.

We talk a lot about some of the bigger things that we worry about like alcohol and drugs in their episode and how we can talk to our kids.

As a proud Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, her practical and evidence-based advice covers all ages, genders and body parts. Dr. Grimes has always enjoyed educating, in and out of the exam rooms. Her message is shared across all media platforms, from print magazines and online forums, to radio talk shows and television.

As a parent of freshly graduated college students herself, Dr. Grimes is especially empathetic to the medical challenges these young people experience.

Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What do teen parents need to know about today’s party culture (that is different from what we experienced)?
  • Is “weed” a big deal or not? Isn’t it less dangerous than alcohol?
  • What is “blackout drinking”? (Lots of risks here that both parents & kids don’t realize, including legal risks with consent)
  • Fentanyl use and Narcan availability in college students.
  • Weed's effects on mental health and genetics.

How to Have The Hard Conversations with Your (Almost Grown) Kids with Dr. Emily Kline08 Aug 202300:51:30

Send us a text

I think one of the hardest things to figure out as a parent of a tween or teen is when to step in and when to step back, especially when you see them struggling or they aren’t making the choice that you want them to make.

And when we do step in or offer our advice, it falls on deaf ears or, worse results in an argument.

Well, my special guest today is Dr. Emily Kline.

She’s here today to talk about her new book, The School of Hard Talks: How to Have Real Conversations with Your (Almost Grown) Kids.

In this interview, Emily shares her research-backed approach that prevents power struggles and pushback and builds stronger relationships through better conversations about any topic: curfews, sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll, college applications, and beyond.

Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What is motivational interviewing, and what are the benefits?
  • When does it make sense to use rewards and punishments to motivate kids, and when does that not make sense?
  • Why do parents get on their older kids’ nerves, and why do our teens and tweens dismiss parents’ input?
  • Understand how to suppress your parental “righting reflex” – the almost irresistible urge to help by offering reassurance and advice.
  • How can we help our tweens and teens navigate their decisions and dilemmas competently?
  • What are some ways to handle conflict that are productive and nurture the relationship?

Autonomy-Supportive Parenting, Interview with Dr. Emily Edlynn01 Aug 202300:49:41

Send us a text

As parents, we want our children to take responsibility for their schoolwork, chores, and choices. We want them to grow into independent adults, but when we see them struggling, we sometimes step in and problem-solve, telling them exactly what to do or even doing things ourselves. The problem is the more controlling we are with our kids, the more we can get in the way of them becoming confident, resilient, self-motivated, and independent.

How do we shift gears to supporting our children’s independence and confidence? How can we do less so they do more?

My special guest, Dr. Emily Edlynn, is here to share her book, Autonomy-Supportive Parenting, Reduce Parental Burnout and Raise Competent, Confident Children.

This is a great conversation about our struggle with letting go and allowing our kids to be independent and how we can get out of the way and support our tween's and teen’s independence, confidence, and motivation.

Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What does it mean to move from full-service to self-service with our kids?
  • The importance of having a chore routine.
  • Supportive parenting is about increasing internal motivation and how we do this with teens and tweens.
  • The three fundamental human needs of autonomy.
  • The importance of asking open-ended questions instead of lectures.
  • The power of emotional connection with our teens and tweens.
  • Controlling vs. autonomy-supportive parenting.
  • What it means to be a good-enough parent.
  • How we should aim for influence but not control.

What Your Hurting Teen Needs You To Know, Interview with Ciara Fanlo27 Jun 202300:57:44

Send us a text

Today, on the podcast, I talk with Ciara Fanlo. Ciara is a writer and the founder of Homing Instinct, a platform that offers support for teens and their families.

As a child and teen, Ciara felt depressed, anxious, self-harming, and suicidal. She went to countless therapists, took over a dozen medications, and was sent to a hospital, wilderness therapy, and a therapeutic boarding school. While she had some healing experiences, she largely felt that the psychiatric and residential health care systems failed to address the root causes and acknowledge the humanity and innate wisdom of teens.

After leaving treatment, Ciara committed to recovery on a different path. She came off all her medications, repaired her relationships with family, and graduated college with honors. She worked in different therapeutic settings and at a couple of large tech companies before deciding to devote her life to guiding teens. She now uses her experiences and insight to support teens in their healing.

You’re going to love this conversation! Let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What was going on when she was a teenager that she was struggling so much?
  • Was there something at the time that parents could have done that would have been helpful?
  • How do parents impact their kids?
  • Ciara eventually found healing and actually got off medications, and graduated college with honors. What created that shift?
  • What wisdom and insight Ciara has for caregivers with a troubled teen like herself.
  • What do our teens think when parents try to “help” them better? What do parents do that is helpful and not so helpful?

What Gen Z Wants Us to Know About the Teen Years, Interview with Zach Gottleib07 Jun 202300:31:51

Send us a text

Welcome to the show today, and I’m so glad that you’re joining me.

If you have a tween or teen, I know without a doubt that there are days when you say to yourself, “What are they thinking?!”

One day I woke up, and I had an alien living in my house. This was my first rodeo with a tween, and it felt like things changed overnight. I had no idea what I was doing. And on top of that, my daughter wasn’t talking as much. She began fighting to be independent and became moody and wasn’t wanting to go to school. I didn’t understand what was going on or how to talk to her.

Today I have a very special guest joining us. Zach Gottlieb, who is an amazing 17-year-old who is the founder of Talk With Zach.

Zach has created this Gen Z movement and community to provide a safe space where teens don’t feel alone in what they’re going through. He openly talks about relationships coping with emotions and inspires mental well-being and to make the world a better place. His motto: “We can’t change what we don’t talk about.”

I can’t wait for you to hear what Zach has to share about what kids today want their parents and other adults to know about how their generation is doing—and the best ways to support them. And perhaps most crucially, we'll delve into the mental health crisis among teens and what Gen Z wants older generations to truly understand.

As parents, we often assume we know what's important to our kids, but what might we be missing? It's time to listen, learn, and bridge the gap.

Let’s jump right in!

What you will learn:

  • What’s the worst thing you can do to your teen when they confide in you?
  • What are some of the things teens want to talk about?
  • Why Zach says parents should stop sharing viral college acceptance videos.
  • What do most teens today want their parents and other adults to know about how their generation is doing—and the best ways to support them?
  • What does Gen-Z want older generations to know about the mental health crisis among teens right now?
  • As parents, we think we know what is important to our kids, but what might we be missing?

The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health with Dr. Jennifer Fraser 28 Feb 202300:53:01

Send us a text

I've been hearing from so many of you who have kids who are being bullied or have been bullied, and they are really struggling. I've also heard from many of you whose kid is the bully and acting out in abusive ways towards others.

Well, this is a fascinating episode that you want to listen to.

My special guest is Dr. Jennifer Fraser, who is the founder of The Bullied Brain (www.bulliedbrain.com). She is an award-winning teacher of 20 years, an international presenter, and a published author.  Dr. Fraser is here today to talk about her latest book, The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health.

In this episode, Dr. Fraser explains what we need to understand about how all forms of bullying and abuse affect our tween's and teens’ brains and how to help both the bullied and the bully heal.

So much of what she shares is extremely helpful in explaining tweens' and teens' behavior, such as grades falling, trouble with problem-solving, wanting to play video games 24/7, anxiety, and skipping school. If we want to support our kids to heal, we need to understand the way the brain works.

"It appears that our bullying epidemic is not cured by blaming, shaming, and ostracizing. It is time for a revolution in how we think about and how we educate ourselves and children about bullying. It needs to be seen as a medical, not a moral problem, especially in childhood. It needs to be instantly identified. The perpetrator needs to be held accountable. Healing needs to begin."

So on that note, let’s dive in!

What you will learn:

  • What verbal abuse does to our children’s brains?
  • What happens to the brain when a child is bullied?
  • Why do kids abuse or bully other kids?
  • Why bullying is more than a moral issue – it’s a medical issue.
  • Why the way society deals with abuse is outdated, and what should we be doing instead?
  • What are some things parents can do when their child is being bullied?
  • Why it’s so easy for kids (and adults) to partake in cyberbullying.  And what this does to our empathy for each other.
  • What happens to a child’s brain when a parent gives them the silent treatment?

How to Help Our Sleep-Deprived Teens, Interview with Lisa Lewis 17 Jan 202300:42:53

Send us a text

Experts say that chronic sleep deprivation among teenagers has been linked to worse academic performance and mental and physical health problems, substance abuse, and drowsy driving. Because of the litany of public health risks, the American Academy of Pediatrics has called for schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m., as even 60 extra minutes of sleep per night can have major benefits in staving off long-term health issues.

My guest today, Lisa L. Lewis, advocated for California’s law for a later start time in High Schools and recently published a book called “The Sleep-Deprived Teen.” We talk today about the consequences of the lack of sleep in our teens and how we can help them thrive.

What you will learn:

  • How much sleep do teens need?
  • What happens when teens don’t get enough sleep?
  • What has the research shown between school start times and teen sleep?
  • What time do high schools currently start around the country, where else has this been done, and what’s on the horizon?
  • What are some ways parents can help their teens get enough sleep?
  • What are some helpful ideas about getting buy-in from your teenager? How do you actually make them understand the need for more sleep?
  • Best practices for teens to develop a sleep routine.
  • How can parents become advocates for later school start times?

The Parent Compass: How To Support Your Teen's Wellness, Education and Set Them Up For Success, Interview with Cindy Muchnick10 Jan 202300:54:30

Send us a text

One of the hardest things about parenting is discerning when to step in and help your kids and when do you step back. This is especially tough during the tween and teen years when our kids are going through huge changes - socially, emotionally, academically, and physically. We are in a huge transitional phase when our kids hit the tween and teen years. And it’s really hard to step back when you’re watching them make choices that you don’t like. This is NOT easy!

We want our kids to be successful of course we do. We love them, and we care - but when are we actually caring so much that they don’t have to care as much?

If you are relating, you are going to find this episode super helpful.

My special guest today is speaker, educational consultant, and bestselling author Cindy Muchnick, who co-author the book, “The Parent Compass: Navigating Your Teen's Wellness and Academic Journey in Today's Competitive World.”

As a mom of four herself, Cindy is on a mission to educate parents on how to support and empower their kids to develop resilience and a sense of purpose without putting too much pressure on them.

A few of the things we talk about are - what kids wish parents would quit doing and allow them to do themselves, the effects on our teens when we over-parent, what to do instead when we are afraid our kids won’t be successful, and what to do to motivate our kids and build a stronger bond with them.

What you will learn:

  • What kids wish parents would quit doing and allow teens to do for themselves.
  • Why you shouldn't constantly be checking your teen's grades and assignments.
  • The effects on our teens when parents are over-parenting.
  • How we tend to measure ourselves based on our kid's success.
  • Tips for posting on social media about our teens
  • Helping your teen feel empowered and proud of their accomplishments without placing burdens on them.
  • How to motivate your teen.
  • Connecting with your teen over their interests to build a stronger bond.
  • Applying the 80/20 rule to parenting.
