Replay: Does Shia/Sunni Matter in America?29 Aug 202400:32:28

☪☪On this popular replay from 2020 (can you believe it's been that long?!?!?!), podcaster mom, Farheen Raza @freeniraza, shared Shia history, practice, and whether or not sects make a difference in America. During this time of division and change in our nation, it DOES matter when we have schisms within Muslim America. Let's close those gaps together. A lot has changed for Farheen since we recorded this, so follow her and find out what that is.

☪☪Part 2 of this conversation was aired in June 2020, and we encourage you to follow up with that one next. This week, tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Amazon Music, or head to our website and listen on the landing page. Share this episode with your Muslim friends who you never thought to ask about their sect (and thank goodness you didn't!).

Replay: Physical & Sexual Trauma and Leadership Accountability22 Aug 202400:37:20

TRIGGER WARNING:

This is one of our favorite episodes because it's no one is above spiritual abuse, and everyone is vulnerable to falling victim to it. We need to have a means to bring leaders to account in this life so we can protect each other in the next one.

FACE (Facing Abuse in Community Environments) addresses those leaders who have taken major missteps, endangering not just our community members, but our faith itself. The time to identify and repair is yesterday. The good news is, we can do it together.

Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stiticher, Spotify, or head to our web landing page to listen, follow, and share.

Creating the Lives We Want21 Jun 202400:40:30

Our guest this week is, Marena Riyad, comedienne, creative, crafter, community builder, and crash courser in life. We got some learning today! From kidnapping to "it takes a village" to "be A LOT uncomfortable" to get where we want to go in life, we found a lot of Marena's talking points really hit home. Young wisdom is so very humbling, especially when it clearly demonstrates how to reconcile immigrant histories and write our own chapters in them.

What does that look like when we grow up with stalwart models of resilience and sacrifice? It often means inheriting a strong work ethic and failure-is-not-an-option gameplan, but there is a room to follow our north stars. Marena demonstrates this beautifully. Whether you're an immigrant, a child of immigrants, or someone striving to make their mark in the world, this episode will resonate.

Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or head to our website landing page for a compelling discussion on ambition, resilience, and the beauty of crafting a life that reflects both where we come from and where we're going.

BONUS Replay: But He Doesn't Hit Me21 Oct 202200:57:20

This is a special REPLAY of Madiha Schader’s experience of hiding the painful details of her emotional abuse from family and friends. The cultural reasons she did this are very clear in her story. She’s not unique, especially because her lived domestic violence wasn’t always physical. Mental, emotional, verbal abuse, financial/social isolation, witholding necessary care, and unreasonable demands from a place of control that endanger a person’s psychosocial wellbeing are equally suffocating, and a matter of life and death. Madiha’s freedom came through her own son and her body. Find out how her closest friends identified what was happening and supported her until she was able to decide it was time to save herself. If you know someone you suspect is in danger of physical violence or mental oppression, help her using the resources listed below. Don’t wait until your phone rings with the worst news ever; text her and let her know you’ve got a listening, non judgmental ear and shoulder for her. If you’re someone who is in danger, having kids WILL NOT change an abuser towards you and might direct abuse toward your kid(s).

Trigger warning: sexual abuse
Mina is our guest today, anonymized to protect their identity. They share their experience with childhood sexual abuse and the effects it had on them, their parents, and their extended family. There are a lot of dynamics to consider and our inner justice-seeker may be triggered; however, the insight as a therapist and survivor they offer is really important to think about.
Let’s talk about second generation trauma, family expectations vs social expectations, our own healing journeys, and how severed ties are navigated in these terribly delicate circumstances.

From Barbados to Becoming: Building a Legacy for Change14 Jun 202400:34:12

We are celebrating Shellie McKinney of @momnetworkusa today, a first generation Muslim American and dedicated community organizer, who channels the resilience and spirit of her immigrant mother from Barbados. Growing up, Shellie learned from her mother's lead and "make lemonade" squeeze, founding an organization that is making the lives of our Muslim moms and children better.

But what ARE the experiences of a first generation immigrant who code switches Bajan so adeptly, you wouldn't guess she's Brooklyn-born? And how do these experiences affect her mothering today? Hear how Shellie's late mother's love and strength lifted new immigrants, and inspired future generations to fully embrace their culture. Today, Shellie works tirelessly to build stronger, more inclusive communities, honoring her mother's legacy with every step she takes.🌟

#boymom Farheen Raza Abbas joins us to discuss the circumstances that caused her to limit relationships in her own family. New Fashioned10 Jun 202200:49:54

Muslim women know fashion, and as such, they know Lisa Vogl, spokesperson for modest fashion and domestic violence, and convert to Islam. Her revelation about converts post shahadah (coming to Islam) is an important reflection of the Muslim community, but even more important are her tips to step up to and for new Muslims. A good point she alludes to is that while Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, there are still a lot of people leaving Islam, and we have to consider why that’s true. A 2017 survey found 24% of Muslim Americans have left Islam, and that 55% of that group no longer identifies with any religion. *Collective shudder.*

Food Addictions: When It's Not Just a Craving26 May 202200:47:38

Samihah Huq joins us to discuss her experience with food addiction and how she’s hit a wall with her doctor in terms of understanding, naming, and taming it. There are barriers to wrapping our brains around food addiction in the Muslim community, starting with the doctor’s office and leading right up to an auntie’s buffet table.
Just like any other addiction, food affects neurochemistry and failure to look at it as a passing issue, a phase, or anything other than a disease unto itself is leading us on a dangerous path. Hear about some tools to help us identify the problem, work with our doctors to name it, and come up with a recovery plan.

This is neurological issue as well as a behavioral issue, so please listen in to find out how to help Muslim children and family members avoid the path to porn addiction. The first step is to listen to this episode, and the second, per Dr. Tahseen is DON’T FREAK OUT (loosely translated). No Kitty Catty about it ;).

Tina Khan joins us today to discuss her experience watching her son’s spiral into drugs and mental health crises and what it did to their family. This is definitely an episode you want to hear before you choose to let your kids listen in, but it really does merit a listen by young people to hear what drug addiction does, not just to an individual, but a family and community.

BONUS Replay: Hasan V Jafri on Roe v Wade06 May 202200:44:28

Due to the mind-numbing circumstances of this week’s Supreme Court decision, we decided to re-release our abortion episode. Right, critics, we know if our moms got abortions, we would not be born to tell the tale. Your fallacy of logic is too exhausting to even address.

As women, moreover as mothers, we are consumed with grief and anger over what is happening on the daily to threaten our children, but now, even the bodies of our female children?  While we regroup and figure out how to take action, we want to reshare our thoughts and some facts about Islam and abortion. Check our shownotes on this one for sure to get the links.

For all these years, the cockroaches have been warning the world about Sharia Law when their own religious laws are SO MUCH more dangerous to women. The irony is maddening. Tell us what you think about Roe v Wade being overturned in comments, but if you identify as male, you should observe and remain silent. As owners of the only set of organs to have laws created to control them, we are hypervigilant right now and have given fair warning to tread lightly or not at all.

Muslim Moms' Spiritual Fortitude21 Apr 202201:00:20

Ustadha Safiya Ravat of Suhbah Institute reminds us how to focus on our Ramadan as moms–beyond the food, the rat race, the decor, and all the things we have to continue doing–to build our safe spiritual spaces with Allah SWT.

Uzma sniffs a lot in this episode after Ustadha shares the tafseer of a commonly misquoted and misused hadith. We couldn’t cut out all that helpful audio from our guest. This one’s for all the girls who grew up being told they didn’t belong in the masjid.

Share this episode with 2 moms you know to remind them how amazing they are and how loved they are by Allah SWT. Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Perpetuity of Ramadan Spiritual Productivity14 Apr 202200:58:16

We are so honored to have Ustadha Hosai Mojaddidi talk to us about impediments to spiritual consistency in our lives. While some folks are trying to get through Ramadan day by day, we are excessively worried about the month coming to a close and not having learned anything. Y’all know we are an anxious duo at the podcast! How do we carry our Ramadan routines forward past this blessed month and not lose the spiritual high?

Let’s talk about train cars, the myth of parental ownership, suhbah (spiritual companionship, which is coming up later this month, by the way!), acts of worship we can rely on no matter our stage of motherhood, and insha’Allah walk away feeling energized to maintain the magic of Ramadan, keeping up steam for the rest of the year. Allahuma ameen.

Ketogenic Lifestyle for Muslims24 Mar 202200:46:04

FitMuslimah Mubarakah Ibrahim tells us about what keto is today, and what it is NOT. Specifically, how is a ketogenic lifestyle (y’all know we don’t like to say “diet” on the podcast!) conducive to fasting in Ramadan in particular? Ketosis is our friend when it comes to fulfilling our worship goals during this holy month. There’s a reason FitMuslimah calls Ramadan “Shahr al Ketosis” (month of ketosis)!

Trace traditional diets of colonized people and learn the origins of our foods, and how those were forced to change to the detriment of global health. Find out FitMuslimah’s recommendations on the best food choices for our bodies to prevent metabolic syndrome and diseases associated with it, which is easier than we think. The key is “insulin spikes.” Tune in at 6pm EST to learn how to choose wisely.

SERIES Muslim Nutrition & Fitness: Zaiba & Uzma's Fitness Success 202203 Mar 202200:44:00

Zaiba & Uzma were so excited to talk about Ramadan prep and the physical, spiritual, and mental work that has to start now, that they recorded an episode together documenting what’s worked so far for them. While Zaiba has been on her journey longer than Uzma now, it’s useful to find out what we aren’t saying correctly to ourselves, and within earshot of our kids, that can sabotage our success before we even begin.

Sorry, but the conversation that one CAN’T do something like make up their fasts, run a mile, or complete a perfect Pinterest Ramadan tableau is untrue. Allah SWT made us capable and barring any actual disabilities, we can and need to stop convincing ourselves that we aren’t enough to reach our fitness goals. Yes, we are.

Cliteracy Consciousness 10 Feb 202200:48:08

Dr. Shaakira Abdullah aka The Halal Sexpert joins us today to talk all things clitoris because let’s be real, how many of us know exactly what it is….or WHERE it is? And it’s a part of our bodies!!! As Zaiba says in this episode, “We don’t know what we don’t talk about.”

Find out about our God-given organ (and He does NOT make mistakes!), its power, and the ways in which men have tried to oppress us through it. Good news: female circumcision is another failure of men and internalized female misogyny to thwart female pleasure. This episode includes terms like “lick,” “kink,” “orgasm,” and “squirt,” so stay tuned for that, preferably without the kids.

Let’s fix that today and appreciate the candor and passion Dr. Abdullah brings to the topics of intimacy, sex, and Muslim sexuality. Don’t miss her advice to parents on how to talk to our kids about sex.

And let’s all get cliterate!

Mom Made in Palestine24 May 202401:10:17

Today’s guest, Morgan Cooper @mashjar_juthour, has lived and breathed Palestine for over two decades and is online telling Americans what her experiences have been as a Christian human in the land. She’s witnessed the DAILY government apartheid and violence against indigenous people and hasn’t been shy to speak up, a warrior mom to Palestinian children being raised on their historical land. Your heart will swell with pride, and break when she shares what she has to teach her kids to be safe there. In this episode, you’ll note us trying not to say “West Bank,” given what she’s has taught us about the language of colonization and violence.

Morgan is a mom and environmental activist, preserving Palestinian land and culture in the ways she knows how: by raising proud Palestinian children, and supporting local female artisans so that the crafts of the land can recruit hearts outside of it. Handmade Palestine has been her passion project for almost a decade and through it, we can help support indigenous mothers and their liberation. Her message to Gazan mothers, well, another tearjerker.

We thought about splitting this into two episodes, but it just couldn’t be done because of the efforts we had to let everyone know about on the ground to help Palestinian moms TODAY. So this may take the drive lines as well as your day’s errands to complete. For those out of school, it’s a good way to start a road trip, but we promise you’ll finish before you hit the next state.

SERIES Detoxing Muslim Sex: Sex Notes04 Feb 202200:48:12

We kick off our series this month breaking down some of the toxic practices and mindsets associated with sex and sexuality in the Muslim community. Who better to address some of those taboos than Zaiba and Uzma themselves? No guests for this episode, folks!

Your favorite cohosts are talking about some of their sexual hangups and breakthroughs, how they got over them, and how they’re raising sex-positive kids who aren’t afraid to talk or learn about sex or to be ashamed of the sexual beings they were created to be. Let’s be our kids’ role models for sex positivity, mamas! Cheers to breaking sexual trauma and sexual negativity!

Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, Pandora, or head over to our website landing page to catch the episode. Leave us a review and share this month’s episodes with 3 friends.

Hands On/Off Parenting 27 Jan 202200:51:46

Aisha Jalali joins us today to discuss her survival guide to raising a 6-pack (of kids, not soda or beer) and being the hot, hot, hot mother in law she is now masha'Allah. The good news is, she is winging it while making it look easy. Like Aisha, WE want to "wing it" via many road trips, sujood ash shukr (prostrations of gratitude), family halaqa traditions, mama self care, and keeping all our ears and doors open, even when there's cucumbers and watermelon sugar involved. Yes, we said it. You'll have to listen to find out why!

When They’re “All Grown Up”20 Jan 202200:49:56

Chaplain Kirsten Jawad joins us today to engage in thoughtful conversation about parenting mindfully in an era when our young people are so much more dynamic than in the past–from flying the nest to staying in it and what work is required to keep our relationships healthy, faithful, and rewarding. While it’s great that our kids don’t want to leave yet, we still serve in our maternal roles to support their continued independence, resilience, and to help our mom-adult child relationship reach another level. Even when our kids fall off the path of Islam, there is a place for us to guide them back as adults without going nuclear (Uzma!!!) using the Kristenism “carefrontations” to bring them back home. It’s about maternal mindset and truly having tawwakul (truly trusting God’s plan) Allah, as well as tawwakul in our kids and our momselves!  Write down her 5 rules to mommying that can make a difference with all ages, but really apply to our adult Muslim kids!
