#22 - How Old is Too Old?30 May 202201:04:53

Should Grace Slick really have retired from music at 50? Are holograms and avatars the path to the future of performance? Anthony, Rob and Alan delve into these and more burning questions in "How Old is Too Old?" But first, we reveal some of what we've been listening to this week and pay tribute to some fallen heroes (Alan White, Andy Fletcher, and Cathal Coughlin).

#113 - "The SLATE & SLICK Show!!"12 May 202401:09:05

Jeff Slate and Earl Slick first met over 15 years ago. In that time they have performed and recorded together many times. Jeff is a guitarist, producer, frontman, journalist, regular guest host on SiriusXM. and ASCAP songwriter. Earl is a legendary guitarist, most known for his long association with David Bowie, his work on the Double Fantasy album with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and his collaborations with Robert Smith, Slim Jim Phantom & Lee Rocker, John Waite, David Coverdale, and more.

Our conversation focuses on Jeff's new album The Last Day of Summer (on which Earl played guitar), and Earl's new biography called Guitar (co-written by Jeff). We also get some great stories about how they became friends, touring with Bowie, working with Dave Stewart, journalistic integrity, selling real estate, what music greats they'd love to work with, and a whole lot more!

#15 - Favorite Opening Tracks EVER22 Mar 202200:59:11

An opening track should be more than simply the first song you hear on an album. A really good opening track sets the tone; it tells you what to expect from the rest of the album. But the BEST opening tracks are a statement of intent. It's a declaration. It's shots fired. We talk about some of our favorite opening tracks ever with our friend Courtland Lewis.

Talking Music Books with author Nick Griffiths!21 Feb 202201:05:45

In this episode we're joined by author Nick Griffiths, whose new book DeadStar: Who the Hell Was Garth Tyson? was released January 2022. We also discuss some of our favorite music books, fiction and non-fiction, that we've read in recent years.

About DeadStar:

Garth Tyson wanted to be the next David Bowie. He fell short. Waaaay short. Burnt out, he fled the stage at Glastonbury '85, having been pelted with mud, and was never seen again. Decades after Garth's disappearance, former bandmates, friends, relatives, lovers, music-biz execs and two fans (you try finding more) reunite to tell Garth's compelling, tragicomic tale.

Can You Separate the Art From the Artist?15 Feb 202200:55:18

We tackle a tricky topic in this episode. We all know artists who have either done awful things or who turn out to be awful people in general. Does that affect the way you listen to their music? Do you no longer monetarily support that artist? How bad is too bad? We do our best to discuss the situation from all angles.

Let us know what you think of this one, and if there are any artists that you have disowned because of their words or actions.

Second, we break down the very interesting situation of the current wave of artists selling off the rights to their catalogs. We'd love to hear your feedback! What do you think of this year's Rock Hall nominees? Who do you think are shoe-ins to be inducted? What are your thoughts about artists selling rights to their music? Let us know!

Who do they each select as their representative guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, vocalist, drummer and producer? Which Deep Purple line-up does Anthony prefer? Who is the big curveball that Rob throws in the vocalist category? And what does Alan really think of Topographic Oceans? All the answers await you!

Following the 1985 American Music Awards, the reigning elite of pop music all convened at A&M Studios to record the vocals for what would become one of the biggest singles in music history, "We Are the World". Spearheaded by Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, the session gathered together some of the most successful and legendary artists of the day -- Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Bette Midler, the Pointer Sisters, Kenny Loggins, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson and more, plus some of the newer superstars on the scene, including Huey Lewis and the News, Cyndi Lauper, and Sheila E -- to record a song that would be used to raise money for the extreme famine happening in Ethiopia. And it's all captured in the new documentary "The Greatest Night in Pop" about the making of "We Are the World", available on Netflix.

This week we have the pleasure of chatting with Grammy Award-winning recording engineer Craig Alvin. Craig has worked with artists like Hanson, Little Big Town, Amy Grant, Andrew Bell, and Brittany Howard, as well as on projects ranging from metal to symphonic to African marimba bands. He engineered the three most recent Kasey Musgraves albums, including the massive Grammy winner Golden Hour (2018) and her newest record, Deeper Well (released March 15, 2024). In February of 2024, he announced the opening of his brand new studio, Noble Steed, in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Our conversation covers his career, very nerdy questions about his new studio, Country Music gatekeepers, and his love of Yacht Rock.

#107 - Changing Genres04 Mar 202400:55:17

On February 11, Beyonce surprise-released a new country-western single, "Texas Hold 'Em", along with a second song "16 Carriages", the first two singles from her upcoming country music album. The song became the first recording by a Black woman to gain the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, despite some country radio stations initially refusing to play it. Rob and Alan, joined by good buddy JM Tuffley, take a listen to the new songs and turn the conversation to other artists who have crossed genre lines in their career, like David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Ray Charles, and many others (even Ethel Merman!).

What do you think of the new Beyonce singles? Are you looking forward to the album? Let us know! Drop us a line at modernmusicology1@gmail.com  and tell us all about it, or leave a comment wherever you find our episode and let us know! And don't forget to rate us on your favorite podcast app!

#102 - BEATLES Covers29 Jan 202400:52:41

The Beatles, like most bands, started out as a cover band, but became arguably the most covered musical act in history. You can find covers of Beatles songs in literally every genre of music. This week, we talk about many of our favorite covers of Beatles classics, including different versions of "Helter Skelter"; weird covers by Tiny Tim, The Flaming Lips, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Tori Amos; Beatles songs transformed into county, soul, jazz, and metal; Christmas songs by The Fab Four; new versions of songs from various soundtracks (Sgt Pepper, Yesterday, Across the Universe); and much more. We even get two live covers from a George Harrison tribute show that Stephanie and Bob played, including their version of The Traveling Wilburys' "Handle With Care."

We're joined by Veronica Dashiel and Charles Kelso of the Monkeeing Around Podcast who introduce us to covers by Micky Dolenz, Apple Jam and The Weeklings.

Check out The Monkeeing Around Podcast here!

We talk a little bit about the history of these albums, our reactions to the new additions to the collections, and what stands out the most (good and bad) in the new remasters, and where we think "Now and Then" stands in the canon of Beatles history.
