From the Salem Witch Trials to Qanon, it turns out that conspiracy theories are “as American as apple pie.” We dive into why we believe them, and how they have impacted American history and democracy in a conversation with author and cultural historian Colin Dickey.  His latest book, “Under the Eye of Power: How Fear of Secret Societies Shape American Democracy,” provides some fascinating historical perspective into how fears of immigrants, other religions, and secret societies have impacted the country’s history over the last few centuries.  Mark Twain once said that “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes,” and we learn that from this unique look at the American story.  —- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. America Can Solve Poverty. We Just Don’t Want To – Mo News Interview26 Dec 202300:49:51

Daring Ladies: The Incredible History of the Women of the CIA22 Dec 202300:50:03
It is a story we have not learned much about….until now. Facing sexism and huge institutional hurdles, the story of the women who helped build the CIA and put their lives on the line in conflicts going back to WWII is an incredible, compelling history.    Writer Liza Mundy tells us their story in her new book, “The Sisterhood: The Secret History of Women at the CIA.” It’s a follow up to her previous book “Code Girls,” about the female code breakers of World War II. Mosheh talks to Liza about the role women played in forming the CIA, what foreign governments they helped infiltrate, what info they helped the US government learn (and what was ignored!!) during the Cold War all the way through the war on terrorism. We also discuss how accurate the portrayal of female agents like those in ‘Homeland’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ are to reality.  — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. More Secrets Than The CIA: Investigating McKinsey’s Influence on the World15 Dec 202300:44:15
It is the most prestigious consulting company in the world, and yet most of us know very little about McKinsey.  The multi-billion dollar firm helps governments around the world and the Fortune 500 make key decisions when it comes to their businesses and their images. McKinsey clients have included big tobacco, opioid makers, the Chinese government as well as US government agencies & the companies they regulate (at the same time). However, all of that work is shielded by NDAs.  How does all that work? Is it legal or ethical? And, how has McKinsey impacted the lives of millions of Americans and people around the world through their consulting relationship? Those are some of the questions we asked investigative reporter Walt Bogdanich in this episode. His book, When McKinsey Comes To Town, follows a multi-year investigation. — Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Cure For Brain Cancer? Submersible Ocean Exploration After the Titanic Disaster - Mo News Interview29 Sep 202301:01:08
We dive deep into the world of submersible exploration in this episode, and discuss what we can learn from traveling to the deepest parts of our oceans. We know more about outer space than our own oceans here on earth. The co-founder of Triton Submarines, Patrick Lahey, is hoping to help change that, and he explains why deep sea travel is so important in this conversation.  We all watched in horror this summer as one submersible ignored safety warnings and imploded near the Titanic in June. We discuss what was uniquely risky about that trip and contraption, and the lessons for the industry and governments from that disaster.  Lahey makes the pitch in this conversation for why deep ocean travel is not only safe but necessary for humans, including some of the things we are discovering about our planet, health and medicine through this type of exploration.  —- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. We talk about all of it in our conversation with space journalist Loren Grush.  Her new book, “The Six: The Untold Story of America’s First Women Astronauts” reads like a movie screenplay, and provides some fascinating historical perspective into the first six American women in space.  As of 1973, the US had sent three females into space: Two spiders and a monkey. We discuss how NASA went about realizing it was time to bring women into space and what challenges the women faced when they got there. After 20 years of war and revolution across the Middle East and North Africa–from Libya to Afghanistan--we take a look at what US foreign policy gets wrong, where China is trying to fill the gaps, and the future of the region, in this conversation with author and journalist Robert Kaplan.  His latest book, “The Loom of Time,” provides some incredible historical perspective on US foreign policy and takes us on a tour of the region from Saudi Arabia to Israel to Syria to Egypt. This episode is effectively an hour-long masters degree in Middle East affairs.  While the US might try, the region continues to require constant attention from Washington DC. Why is that? Kaplan provides perspective on how we got here over the last 100 years, about his conversations with senior leaders across the region and what might happen next.  —- Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Holocaust Survivor Leo Ullman Tells His Incredible Story— Mo News Interview28 Jan 202300:58:33
As we mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we talk to Holocaust survivor Leo Ullman. He was born in Amsterdam in July of 1939, which makes him one of the youngest Holocaust survivors– and the few Holocaust survivors who are still living today.  Leo was just three years old when his family went into hiding in Amsterdam. That’s the same city where another young Jewish person, Anne Frank, was also in hiding.  Leo was raised by a Christian family for 796 days. He’s since written a book called ‘796 Days’ about that experience and his family’s eventual escape to the United States after WWII.  Hear Leo’s incredible story, what life was like for his family before and after the war, why they decided to come to America, and what he thinks about the resurgence in antisemitism and Holocaust denial. And hear the backstory of five missing pages of Anne Frank’s diary.  This Week’s Sponsors: – Athletic Greens – AG1 Powder + 1 year of free Vitamin D & 5 free travel packs – Boll & Branch Bedding & Sheets – 15% Off + Free Shipping | USE CODE: MONEWS LINKS:  Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Jill Wagner (@jillrwagner) is an Emmy and Murrow award- winning journalist. Interview: Supreme Court Hears Free Speech & Voting Cases. A Conversation With Sharon McMahon – Mo News Bonus Edition08 Dec 202200:47:24
It has been a huge week for the U.S. Supreme Court as it heard two of the biggest cases of the year. Their decisions will help dictate the future of free speech and voting for all Americans.  One major case involves a Colorado web designer who wants to refuse to work for same-sex couples over religious beliefs. It goes against the state’s anti-discrimination law. (303 Creative LLC v. Elenis)  The second big case this week featured Republican legislators in North Carolina asking the high court to grant them unrestricted power to set rules for voting and elections. They believe they should be able to do so without oversight by courts or the governor. It could dramatically alter how elections are conducted in the U.S. (Moore v. Harper) Mosheh conducted Instagram Lives this week with Sharon McMahon aka @sharonsaysso, who closely watches the court, to break down the arguments and take viewer questions on Tuesday and Wednesday. This episode features highlights from each conversation.  You can catch Sharon’s Here's Where It Gets Interesting Podcast and her Instagram Page, @sharonsayso – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. The Dems "Undoing" In NY: Interview with Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) On Midterm Lessons – Mo News Bonus Edition10 Nov 202200:22:51
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) discusses the lessons of the 2022 midterms for Democrats and Republicans.  “The cruelest irony of the midterm elections is that New York was the only place where there was a clear red wave,” he tells Mosheh, noting that Democrats are ignoring public safety and crime worries at their own peril. In fact, Republicans may end up clinching the House because of the seats they were able to pick up in NY on Tuesday.  Torres also talks about his concerns about the close results in the state and why they might mean that Republicans like Ron DeSantis may try to compete in the traditionally blue state in the 2024 presidential election.  Torres, 34, is one of the youngest members of Congress. He also speak about his feelings on whether President Biden should run for re-election in 2024 and whether it is time for a new generation to lead Democrats in Congress to replace Speaker Nancy Pelosi. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist.
