Hi there, it’s Minami. I’m starting a podcast, and this is Episode 0. Yay!

The podcast is called “Mirror Mirror.” This is something really personal for me. I wanted to create an audio archive, like a "time capsule," filled with words and thoughts for my future self. This podcast is kind of a little gift to who I’ll become.

I moved from Japan to London about 8 months ago. Since then, I’ve noticed my view on daily life has changed a lot. When our surroundings change, our way of thinking changes too. I thought about the best way to capture these changes and realized that recording them in audio felt just right. These changes feel more like waves or rhythms, so audio seemed to fit better than visuals.

That’s why I decided to start this podcast as a personal record through dialogue. In each episode, I’ll invite a friend, and we’ll have a chat. This is the first one, Episode ZERO of “Mirror Mirror.”

The title 'Mirror Mirror' comes from the quote that people are like mirrors—they reflect who we are. Looking at the people around me, I see the kind of community and connections I’ve built.

As my life changes, so do my relationships, and the way I connect with others evolves.When I look back on my life this way, I realize how important my friends, family, and the people around me are to me.

Sometimes, we think we know ourselves, but there are many things we can’t see without others. Talking with people often helps me discover new sides of myself.The words people share, new knowledge, different perspectives, and their life stories—all these help me understand more about myself. This might seem obvious to some, but I’ve really felt it every day over the past few months.

What I love about talking with others is that I often have realizations I wouldn’t have on my own. Sometimes, unexpected thoughts or words come out, and I think, “Oh, that’s what I was thinking.” Or when someone says, “Minami, you’re like this,” I think, “Oh, that’s how you see me.”

I love talking with people, and it makes me happy to see myself more clearly through different people during our conversations. I’m really excited to capture and archive these special moments here.

Of course, this podcast won’t capture my entire life, but it’s a way to preserve some of the little sparkles of my daily life for my future self.

Ep. 0 “人は自分を映す鏡。超個人的・Podcast、はじめます。”

東京からLondonへ引っ越して、自分のいまを音声に乗せて残しておきたくて、未来の私に向けた「タイムカプセル」のようなPodcastをはじめます。エピソードごとに私の友人をお迎えして、会話を通して私たちの関係を振り返って、お互いをゆったりと話せたらな、と思います。

よく「人は自分を映す鏡」というように、自分以外の人が私の新しい一面を映して見せてくれる。

Ep. 11 “自分の「要」の定期点検”

さちえさんと私は、彼女がロンドンで働かれている美容室で出会いました。最初はお客さんとしてヘアカットをしてもらったのですが、初めてお話した時にさちえさんの人柄もあいまって「もっと話してみたい！今度ぜひお茶行きましょう！」となり、今回の収録が叶いました。

さちえさんも同じくワーホリでロンドンに来られて、もうすぐ4年！渡英して美容師さんとして働かれて、パートナーと結婚されて…そんなロンドンの先輩であるさちえさんと、自分たちへの小さな励ましや喜びを共有できて、私的にはとっても嬉しい時間になりました◎

そして、たとえ同じことをするにしても「視点を変えてみる」って必要だな、と！「そうそう私ってここを大切にしたかったんだな」「いまの自分はもうここは手放していい感覚だな」……そんな自分自身の人生の定期検診の大切さを学んだ回でした。

Ep. 10 “Where the Waves Take Us”

Toyi and I first met about 12 years ago in Tokyo. A mutual friend introduced us, and somehow this lovely, absolutely wonderful “Foreign Alien” (joking, of course 👾) — stayed at my place.

12 years later, here we are, sharing daily life in London. Who would’ve thought? She’s definitely the one who showed me that even with my broken English, I could still dive into the ocean of my thoughts. I’ve never felt that way before.

Oh, and fun fact—this episode title was actually inspired by the track "Where The Waves Take Us" by Purrple Cat, which I use as the BGM for this podcast. Did you know? hehe.

When I was editing Ep. 0, I listened to so many BGM options, searching for the right vibe. And then, I fell in love with this one. When I looked at the title, I was shocked—it was exactly the feeling I was trying to capture.

We never really know where we’ll end up. But maybe that’s why the waves of joy feel so big when they finally reach us. So, to 12-years-ago Toyi, to Nana, and to myself—so, so grateful♡

Ep. 9 “はじめの一歩、まだ残しておく？”

大森ちゃんは、私のパートナーの会社の後輩で、会社を休職して1年間アイルランドに語学留学をしていました。

「人生で自分が慣れ親しんだ場所を離れることがなかった」彼女が、遠い国に行こうと決めたことは、本当に一大決心だったんだなと、その決断への彼女の歩幅の大きさを垣間見た気がします。

まさに「千里の道も一歩から」だよね。ちょうど最近老子の本を読んでいて、この言葉の本来の意味が「何事も最初の一歩を踏み出すことが重要だよ」っていうことを知りました。大森ちゃんは、もしかしたら、何かへのはじめの一歩を踏み出したのかも…！？🙌

ダブリンの街について、曇っている時に綺麗に見えるって言うのはなるほど！と思いました。俳優さんのメイクが舞台の照明とかセットに合わせて美しく映える、みたいなね。日本に帰った大森ちゃんから、建築的視点で旅や街並みの話を聞くのが楽しみです。（我が家でのご飯会、楽しみ…！）

Ep. 8 “違いがあるから自分に気づく” Sae / 2024-11-14

19歳の頃、とあるDJイベントで出会ったさえさん（ムズムズする思い出！はは）

いまは旦那さんのお仕事の関係でギリシャに住んでいる彼女が、ギリシャからロンドンに遊びにくることになり、ゆっくり話す機会に恵まれました！（ありがとう！）

今も昔もさえさんのブレない「キュレーション力」は健在で、それはじっくり吟味して、検討した先に生まれるものなのかもと思いました。

話していて感じたことは、自分にも人にも律儀だなって思う。とっても堅実。自分の行動や考え方を振り返って、自分や物事に対してこんなに律儀でいられるかな？と、考えてしまった💭

この全く違う考え方に出会うからこそ、私自身も無意識な思考への気づきの連続で、とても学びが多い時間だった！さえさん、ありがとう！

Ep. 7 “「距離あるよね」は始まりの言葉” Chihiro / 2024-11-05

ひょんなことから私がメッセージをしたことを機に出会ったちひろちゃん。 初対面したとき、「言葉に興味がある」と話すちひろちゃんのアツさに感化されて、香りの話をたくさんしたのを覚えています。会話をする中で「編集脳」の考え方が面白かった…！彼女は自分が話したいことでエンジン全開にするんじゃなくて、一歩置いて相手のエンジンのかかり具合を見ながら会話をしていくのかもな、と思いながら聞いていました。 本編でも話に挙がった「友達との距離」について、みんなどう考えてるんだろう？距離があることが不安になったりするのかな・・？これはまた違う友達とも話したいなと思いました。
それから、自分の人生を振り返ると、新しいことに飛び込むために、いい引き際を無意識で考えていたタイミングが何度かあって、それはきっと今の考えや行動にも繋がってるなと、思いました。ときに新しい舵切りをするのにやっぱり潮目を見定めるっていうのは大事だな…と！と自分自身の性質について改めて認識することが多かった。ちひろちゃん、ありがとう！

Ep. 6  “なるようになる。そう思える選択肢を自分が作る” Hikaruko / 2024-09-29

18歳以来の友人、ひかちゃんがロンドンにやって来た！（ヤァ!ヤァ!ヤァ!🇬🇧） 私たちは長い時間を共にしてきたわけではなく、どちらか言えばたくさんの時間を飛び越えて来ました。にも関わらず、彼女に会うとふと懐かしさを感じるの、不思議よね。そんな彼女から学ぶことは、物事を能動的なアングルで見るからこそ、自分の興味のフックが増えて、いろんなことにワクワクできる、ってこと。
そして30代に入って「ゴールが一つじゃない、意外にドンと構えてる余裕が出てきた」と話すひかちゃんを見て、彼女は力の抜きどころや抜き加減を掴んだんだなと思ったし、だからこそ前より踏ん張れるよね！と共感もしていました。
予想外のことも、ハプニングも、なんとかしてきたからこそ、「なんとかなるよ」って言える。人に向き合う彼女を見て「優しさ」の意味を改めて考えさせられました💭ひかちゃん、ありがとう！

Ep. 5 “見えてる世界はその人の見方次第”

デンマークからのゲスト、りょうちんは、Ep.3で出てくれたお友達・Mikaちんの紹介で出会いました（またまた！笑）。

今回は“お友達との対話”というより、“知り合ってほやほやの会話”を残します（笑）※一部音のバランスが崩れてしまっていますが、ご了承ください🙏

大阪→京都→デンマーク。「海外とは一生縁がない人間だと思ってた」と話す彼女がデンマークワーホリに来たお話や気づきについて話してくれています。

Ep. 4  “印象の因数分解”

前回出てくれたお友達・Mikaちんのお誘いがきっかけで出会った私たち。私にとって彼女は「厳しい寒さの中遠くに感じる始まりの兆し」のイメージです。

初対面の人たちの中で自分のことを「スパッとスパッと」話していく第一印象の彼女。でも回を重ねていくごとに第一印象とはまた違う一面を見せてくれる彼女との時間を通じて、改めて、人と会話を重ねる醍醐味を感じます。

「よく人に言われる言葉つ一つが腑に落ちた気がする」と言ってたのが印象的で、私も会話を通して「印象の因数分解」をしているような感覚になりました。きえちゃん、ありがとう！（Yeast Bakeryにも遊びにいくね！）

Ep. 3  “想うだけじゃなくて、話すって大事よね”

1ヶ月違いでロンドンへ引っ越してきた、みかちんと私。一言で言うと私たちは、”おしゃべり遠足友達”です（笑）いくつになっても「ここ行かない？これやってみない？」って気兼ねなく誘い合えるのが純粋に楽しいし、その行き先が公園でも遠出でも、やっぱりうれしいよね。

いろんな場所で、会話を重ねている私たちがいつも行き着くのは「想うだけじゃなくて、話すことで気づくことってあるよね」ってことです。それは声に出して同じ言語を話すことで行う会話ではなく、相手に意識を向けて歩み寄る、想いを言葉にして（時にそれはジェスチャーかも🖖）伝えることだと思います。

みかちん、ありがとう！

Ep. 2  “感性と感受性の違いってなに？”

化粧品会社の元同僚だった私たち。部署も性格も違う私たちが仲良くなったきっかけは、とある大阪出張でした。一緒に働いた期間はほんのわずかだったけれど、いまでも私にとって思い出深い日々！

「0か100か。白か黒かハッキリしたい」でも、義理堅くて人間味あるきよてぃとの会話はいつも驚きの連続でした。本編の中で「感性と感受性の違い」について少し触れていて、改めて振り返ると、自分の情緒と、感性と、感受性を意識的に分けて考えることってなかったな、ということに気づきました。
