| Ep.266 Jeremy Deller - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 05 Dec 2024 | 00:32:33 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jeremy Deller (@jeremydeller)
Jeremy Deller is a British conceptual artist renowned for his innovative and socially engaged practice. His work often explores history, politics, memory, and collective identity, blending art with performance, video, and community involvement. Deller’s approach is notable for its inclusivity—he often collaborates with non-professional participants to produce work that challenges traditional notions of art and authorship.
One of his most significant works is The Battle of Orgreave (2001), a reenactment of the violent 1984 miners' strike confrontation between police and striking miners. The project addressed themes of working-class struggle, historical memory, and the spectacle of violence, raising questions about how history is remembered and represented. This immersive approach to historical events would become a hallmark of Deller’s practice.
Other notable works include English Magic (2013), a politically charged series that critiques British national identity, capitalism, and inequality. Deller’s work often critiques social and political structures while encouraging dialogue and participation. In 2004, he won the Turner Prize for his ability to redefine art's relationship to both the public and its cultural contexts. Deller’s work continues to reflect his belief that art should engage with and speak to the world around it, often offering new ways of understanding the past, present, and future.

| Ep.265 John Costi - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 18 Nov 2024 | 00:41:56 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to John Costi (@bapou_costi)
This is John Costi’s second appearance on the Ministry of Arts Podcast, the first being ep.48. He is known for his conceptual and often collaborative work, which explores themes of culture, identity, and history.
In 2012, Costi had a notable experience traveling to Venice with artist Jeremy Deller. The trip was part of a project facilitated by the Koestler Trust, an organization that supports creative work by prisoners, ex-offenders, and young people at risk. Deller, a renowned artist known for his interest in social contexts, invited Costi to join him in Venice during the Venice Biennale, where they explored the intersections of art, prison reform, and personal narrative.
This journey allowed Costi to engage in a broader dialogue about the transformative potential of art, especially for marginalized communities. The Venice trip exemplified Costi’s approach to art-making—collaborative, reflective, and deeply attuned to the social and political dimensions of creative expression.
John and Jeremy have co-curated Koestler Arts’ annual exhibition at Southbanks, Royal festival Hall, ‘No Comment’ runs until 15th December.

| Jonny Mellor- New Artist Fair 2024/ MoA Bonus Episode 43 | 04 Sep 2024 | 00:27:54 | |
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jonny Mellor (@JonnyMellorArt) who is showing in the New Art Fair 2024, at the Truman Brewery, London, from 27-29 September 2024 I am an artist strongly influenced by minimalism and geometric abstraction. I use this visual language to create paintings, prints and hand cut paper art . The exploration of colour, process, materials, space and form are central to my practice. I am interested in taking forms, shapes and patterns and combining these with carefully considered colour combinations. I am continually striving to achieve balance and harmony within my works composition and colour pallet. Amongst the barrage of visual stimulation and the overall increasingly chaoticness of life, minimalist art is at rest, creating a quiet harmony and balance which offers the viewer a space of calmness and contemplation.

Trish Wylie has been painting for more than 30 years and is currently based in London. Her latest work is inspired by themes of gender and nature. She also explores the use of multiple mediums from collage to re-visiting watercolour on large scale canvas. Alongside this is her interest in Jungian theory (animus/anima) which she explores in her latest James Bond and Lipstick series.

| Ep.191 Kate Knight - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 27 Sep 2022 | 00:51:32 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kate Knight (@knightpainter) Kent based artist Kate Knight works primarily with figurative imagery. Within the drawn explorations of nature, Knight's concerns are upon the aesthetics of desire, sex and death. The works are provocative, playful, harsh and tongue in cheek. The compositions establish a series of graphic signs, aiming to evoke a narrative whether epic or fleeting. The current developments juxtapose a darker underbelly, presenting unease; as well as the guardianship of something sacred. This response is loaded with a sense of otherness, something beyond the ordinary; a dystopian landscape. Knight currently works in biro as well as painting and sculpture. The use of biro on such a large scale is labour intensive; enabling very fine detail and presenting an etched like quality. Knight approaches drawing in much the same way as she paints, for this reason she considers herself to be primarily a painter. Knight studied her BA Fine Art Painting at Chelsea College of Art and design 2005. She was selected as the runner up for the Marmite Prize for Painting 2010 as well as being selected for ‘Artist of the Day’ Flowers Central on Cork Street 2010 by professor Mo Throp. She is a regular participant at London's prestigious Art Car Boot Fair For more information on the work of Kate Knight go to To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofarts For full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.org Email: ministryofartsorg@gmail.com Social Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to John Ball (@beware_the_void) Based in Romford (London, U.K) and working primarily in the South East of the United Kingdom, contemporary artist John Ball creates unsettling images of a dystopian suburban landscape. John is probably best known for his appearance on the Sky Arts ‘Landscape Artist Of The Year’ television show where he was fortunate enough to place as finalist. ‘Incredibly cinematic, foreboding vacant landscapes’ comparable to the work of Edward hopper and David lynch. (Kate Bryan, Head of Collections for Soho House) 'John Ball's work was a like a breath of fresh air on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year in 2017 with its unique sense of mood and use of colour. The melancholic scenes that he constructs are poetic in themselves and full of story, to the point that they demand your attention and hold it very firmly indeed.' (Kathleen Soriano, curator) Commissioned by Teeth of the Sea (Rocket Recordings) to produce their debut album cover in 2009 and subsequently 'your mercury' (2010) and 'Master' (2013). John has previously exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery with the BP Portrait Awards in 2007 with his painting 'Commuter' This was also published in the '500 Portraits' hardback in 2011. | Ep.189 Sara Pope - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 11 Sep 2022 | 00:34:11
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Sara Pope (@sarapopeartist)
Contemporary artist Sara Pope is best known for her bold, seductive paintings of voluptuous lips. Taking inspiration from a successful career in the fashion industry as a shoe designer for brands such as Paul Smith, and also her work in magazines as a designer and art director, Sara aims to capture the sensuality and seductive power conveyed by the lips and mouth. Interested in questions of beauty, communication, and the notion of perfection, Sara uses the perspective of her commercial experience to explore these themes.
The starting point is a makeup brush and a lipstick. She paints the models’ lips, then, using tricks and techniques of makeup and lighting, she begins the process of creating the perfect lips. She asks the model, to express different emotions which she captures photographically. Using these shots as inspiration she begins the artwork. The painting process involves several layers of thin oil-diluted paint being overlaid, blending and smoothing the colours extensively at every stage, sometimes also mixing lipstick into the paint. Emulating the stylistic slickness of advertising, the result is glossy, perfect and irresistible.

| Stella Zuegel - New Artist Fair 2024/ MoA Bonus Episode 42 | 28 Aug 2024 | 00:31:40 | |
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Stella Zuegel (@stellazuegelart) who is showing in the New Art Fair 2024, at the Truman Brewery, London, from 27-29 September 2024 Contemporary geometric artist Stella Zuegel creates unique art using both watercolour on paper, and acrylic and oil paint on canvas. Each piece is painted free hand and takes between 3-24 months to complete.
In her work, Stella plays with shapes and colours to create depth, dimension and cohesion. These curate a journey of free-flowing exploration through individual shapes, larger patterns and the composition as a whole for the audience. Stella’s work is inspired both by the poignant stories and emotions of herself and the people she meets and by an organic curiosity towards the very nature of self and the universe. Her work is thus a geometric representation of her inner path to discover the essence of her being and her journey towards understanding the world and its people, whilst also being a colourful expression of human experience and emotion.

| Ep.188 The Misfortune Teller - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 05 Sep 2022 | 01:09:12 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to The Misfortune teller (@themisfortuneteller)
After failing at everything else in life, The Misfortune Teller gave up entirely and decided to become an artist.
Since then, his bleakly humorous, confessional style has garnered him a modest yet enthusiastic following, and nigh-on zero industry recognition. Encouragingly, some people have paid actual money to acquire his stuff, which is a surprise both to him and his friends and family, who cheer from the sidelines with a bemused, and slightly annoyed look on their faces.
As creator of the ‘Dark Therapy’ style, The Misfortune Teller delivers painfully honest truths across a variety of mediums, from ink on paper to balloon sculptures on rooftops, from brutally honest memorial plaques screwed onto park benches in the dead of night, to teabags inscribed with demotivational messages. On occasion, he also gives live ‘Misfortunetellings’ at fairs to anyone brave enough to hear their dark prophecy.
His most recent piece, a metal road sign bearing the message ‘Everything is a sign when you are lost,’ is available now.*

| Miss Bugs - MoA Bonus Episode 15 | 30 Aug 2022 | 00:24:09 | |
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Miss Bugs (@miss_bugs) Miss Bugs was founded in the early part of 2007, originally coming from a background in photography and graphics. Working in partnership, they developed fast, spontaneous working methods, cutting and pasting existing images; ‘remixing and sampling classics’ in art to make new pieces with their own mark. Miss Bugs began in the early days making small scale works on paper, using screen printing with hand painted elements. They then scaled the work up, making life size cut outs of characters to place in situ on the streets of London. These were left in place to become part of the cityscape and recorded through photography. Their most recent work includes larger scale pieces, incorporating laser cut planes of wood, hundreds of small component objects and poured resin. These pieces are time consuming and labour intensive, and a long way from the quickly constructed art pieces of the early days. Miss Bugs has always taken a broad and varied approach to creating work. The combining of materials and objects, alongside the way contemporary imagery can be collaged together, either by hand, through photography, or using a digital process is important. The focus of the work has always been the human form; as Miss Bugs’ interest lies in developing ‘characters’ to tell a story. Archetypal imagery from magazines, art history and films are used as a starting point, which are then cut, overlaid and distorted to produce character portraits with an arresting graphic look. The influence of collage artists like Hannah Höch can clearly be seen in the work. The layering and placing of colour and pattern is also intrinsic to the work, and is very much a hands on element for Miss Bugs in the construction of the final pieces. | Ep.186 Adam Brigland - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 17 Aug 2022 | 00:57:27
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Adam Brigland (@adam_bridgland)
Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2006, Bridgland has used a diverse range of materials and working methods to pursue an incisive and often witty exploration of distinctively British sentiments, externalising the underlying sense of loss and nostalgia that permeates our memories. Vignettes of British back-packer’s holidays, old-fashioned bus-tours, and childhood seaside breaks that figure strongly in his visual repertoire are often tinged with this feeling of time having passed too quickly, our memories gradually fading. Twinned with this however, is an upbeat celebration of themes distilled from children’s colouring books, paint-by-numbers kits, old public transport posters and kitsch postcards, which he imbues with the kaleidoscopic richness of carefully chosen and thickly applied primary colours. These everyday, almost mundane subjects are treated with the importance and status of emblems; centred in each work and often encapsulated within related text or target-like circular borders that focus our gaze.
Whether descriptive of change or constancy, Bridgland’s work keys into our desire to remember and relive, and plays upon our tendency to elevate our shared memories with the rose-tinted, wistful spectacles we don when thinking of the past, as well as the future. His depictions of identity and belonging, nostalgia and emotion give to his work a hugely personal aspect, and are influenced by a graphic and visual tradition that is quite specific to Britain. Yet his subtle combinations of image and related text play on everyone’s perceptions of shared occasions. Perhaps then it is the delicately précised power of the experiences he attempts to capture that make Bridgland’s work so accessible to all.
Text by Matthew Reeves, Independent Curator and Curator of East Wing Nine at the Courtauld Institute of the Arts.

Together with Pussy Riot and a number of other well-known Russian artists, he participated in the group exhibition “Russian Post-Soviet Actionism” at the Saatchi Art Gallery in London in 2017, various public projects worldwide, exhibitions in the Multimedia Art Museum in Moscow (2021) and the exhibition “Millennials in Contemporary Russian Art” running today in the Russian State Museum in Saint-Petersburg. His works deal with freedom and unfreedom through the symbols and materiality of his sculptures. The reconsidered, reinvented symbols turn into new – critical, political, desacralized ones. The most dominant material in his works are steel bars which he cuts and welds into grids. The rebar and steel in Russia is the synonym of unfreedom. The rebar is an absolute symbol of aggression.

| Ep.259 Natalie Chapman - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 25 Aug 2024 | 00:49:53 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Natalie Chapman (@nataliechapmanartist) Natalie Chapman paints portraits that engage with family identity and issues based around dysfunctional relationships and social documentary. She is influenced by the work of photographers Richard Billingham and Nan Golding, and have similarly focused on spontaneous snapshot- compositions, saturated colour space and incidental objects in order to set a scene of everyday life.
She has returned to the same old photographs of her childhood, to re-arrange her memories and work through family history and its daily struggle. Natalie wants her work to feel edgy and to seduce the viewer into contemplating ambiguous tension, a sense of emptiness, boredom and anxiety.
Her process involves capturing memories using small collages of family portraits with interior scenes recalled from childhood. These studies are scaled up on large canvases to create presence and intensify personal stories using gritty expression and garish colour. She wants to create images about human relationships that are simultaneously tender and dysfunctional.

| Ep.181 Charlotte Colbert - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 10 Jul 2022 | 00:31:32 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Charlotte Colbert (@colbertcharlotte)
Language, psychoanalysis, socio-political constructions of gender and identity are at the heart of Colbert’s practice. Spanning film, photography, ceramics, and sculpture, she questions narrative structures and storytelling, weaving surreal and fantastical mise en scene in a documentarian approach to characters, figures, and people. Fiction becomes a way to approach the truth and the most intimate emotions. Straddling the fine line between fine art and film, Colbert’s films have strong philosophical undertones and often play on questions of time, space and identity, often dark and surreal with a hint of comedy. Selected Shows: Mademoiselle, CRAC Centre Regional d Art Contemporain Occitanie, Sete, France (2018); From Selfie to Self Expression, Saatchi Gallery, London, UK (2017), Daydreaming with Stanely Kubrick; Guests V&A Museum of Childhood, London, UK; Istanbul International Art fair; Art Basel; Small is Beautiful, Flowers Gallery; Dancing at the edge of the World, Sara Zanin, Rome; Birth, TJ Boulting.

| Ep.180 Gavin Turk - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 03 Jul 2022 | 01:01:30 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Gavin Turk (@thisisnotgavinturk)
Gavin Turk (b 1967) is a British born, international artist. He has pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture now taken for granted, including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of rubbish in art.
Turk’s installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the ‘myth’ of the artist and the ‘authorship’ of a work, Turk’s engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp.
In 1991, the Royal College of Art refused Turk a degree on the basis that his final show, ‘Cave’, consisted of a whitewashed studio space containing only a blue heritage plaque commemorating his presence ‘Gavin Turk worked here 1989-91'. Instantly gaining notoriety through this installation, Turk was spotted by Charles Saatchi and was included in several YBA exhibitions. Turk’s work has since been collected and exhibited by many major museums and galleries throughout the world.

| Melody Travers - MoA Bonus Episode 11 | 29 Jun 2022 | 00:26:20 | |
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Melody Travers (@melodytraversart) Melody is a French artist with a Masters in Art & Art History at the Université Paris VIII. She lived in London twelve years, developing her art whilst working in book publishing and art galleries. She spent two years working full time on her art at Wimbledon Art Studios; she has since moved her practice back to France and now splits her time between France and London. She has showcased her work in London and the UK and was shortlisted for the Creates Gallery Emerging Artist Award in 2018, shortlisted for the ArtCan open call 2020 and long-listed for the Secret Art Prize in 2019. Talented Art 1-3 July 2022 Brighton Racecourse, Freshfield Road, Brighton BN2 9XZ Talented Art Fair was founded by Oliver Norris and Leah Michelle, the team behind the New Artist Fair, with the aim of offering the public a friendly and affordable place to purchase art directly from established and emerging artists. In doing so, the fair provides a physical platform for successful artists to interact personally with their collectors and also allows them to grow their client list. Having successfully curated and run exhibitions and art fairs for the past six years, the organisers recognised a gap in the art fair market for artists who have a successful track record for selling their work, and who may also have gallery representation, but want to introduce their art directly to the general buying public in London. Talented aims to bridge this gap by becoming a great place to discover amazing talent and buy art directly from artists, in a relaxed and inspiring environment. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Paul Yule (@paul_yule)
Paul Yule is a South African born sculptor, photographer and film-maker, living in the UK. Having had an extensive career in photography and film-making, Paul turned to sculpture as a form of connecting with his Son, who studied sculpture at Central Saint Martins and had recently passed away. He slowly manipulated a small ball of clay, that he had been handed, he subconsciously formed one bust of an imaginary figure after another. Each small figure has a definite personality, a personality made more powerful once photographed and blown up to around a metre.
You can find Paul and his work on stall 47, at The Talented Art Fair, Brighton Racecourse 1-3 July.

| Ep.177 KCAW & Kipling Hunt - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 15 Jun 2022 | 00:50:55 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kipling Hunt (@kipling_hunt)
Born in London, Hunt has also lived in Barcelona, Birmingham and in semi-rural isolation on the borders of Wales. Kipling makes fine art pieces in ceramic, in paint, in print, in film, or in fact any medium most able to deliver each concept in question with assurance and panache.
Kipling has also worked for over a decade in the Secondary Art Market, as a General Specialist in Fine Art Paintings, Prints and Sculpture. This gave Hunt great insight and a comprehensive knowledge of artists both practicing and those now deceased; and a working blueprint of what goes on behind the scenes to oil the wheels of the global art market.

| Ep.176 Duncan McAfee - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 09 Jun 2022 | 00:58:33 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Duncan McAfee (@duncanmcafee)
McAfee essentially approaches painting as a game. He arranges figurative and abstract elements from art and visual culture to make hybrid paintings, brightly coloured, comic-book exquisite-corpses. His recent Exploding Heads series could be portraits of the mad prophets of some post apocalyptic cult. Constructed from broken fragments of other images, misremembered or misquoted, like Russell Hoban’s Punch puppet in the novel Ridley Walker. McAfee draws on Hoban, “the way Punch is misappropriated and all wrong is funny and grotesque but the weight and meaning it takes on is also deeply affecting. I want to try and get close to that conflict of feelings in my paintings”. This collage style evokes a surrealist “chance encounter” but also perhaps like Burroughs’ cut-ups, a form of time travel. McAfee’s influences range from Nigel Cooke’s recurring characters, George Condo’s Psychological Cubism, revisiting Francis Bacon, the fanaticism of classical religious painting, and also outsider Ralph Bakshi’s animation and recent paintings of clowns and mobsters. McAfee’s painting technique plays back and forth between very loose chance actions and tight, illustrative drawing/painting. This creates a tension that makes us unsure if the image is in the process of forming or breaking apart. It’s in a state of transition and meaning is uncertain, much like the world around us.

| Ep.175 Keira Rathbone - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 02 Jun 2022 | 00:46:01 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Keira Rathbone (@typewriterart) Keira Rathbone is an established fine artist living and working in London. She grew up in Dorset, gained a BA (hons) in Fine Art at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Since 2003 she has developed a unique drawing technique, employing a manual typewriter as a drawing tool. Rathbone draws images from life using her typewriter, instinctively translating what she sees into an array of letters, number and symbols chosen for their shape and textural values resulting in beautiful enigmatic images that encourage the viewer to keep looking from different distances, reading more into it each time. She develops and exhibits images based around compelling themes and often incorporates live audio/visual performances by typing before an audience with video projection, sound effects and collaborations with other artists. Her art is used to reflect the world and people around her, capturing moments through this artistic and accessible medium. Typewriter Art does not overcomplicate but allows a moment to be depicted and celebrated in a true snapshot of beauty and poignancy. She has appeared numerous times on television, including BBC News, BBC World News, The One Show and SKY Landscape Artist of the Year as well as BBC Radio 2, 4 and 6Music. She currently has an original hanging with short film and typewriter exhibited alongside in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. Her work takes has taken across the UK and abroad, each place influences and inspires her creative process. | Winter Sculpture Park 2025 - MoA Bonus Episode 41 | 19 Aug 2024 | 00:25:30
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Gallery No32 (@gallery_no.32) Taking inspiration from our grassroots, DIY heritage, 2025's PARK is a space for experimentation. This year, we're not only encouraging fully formed applications, but also ideas, WIPs and sculptural question marks so that together, we can build our 4th and most exciting sculpture park to date.
We have a new venue! We are re-opening Thamesview Golf Course in Thamesmead, South East London for the return of the PARK. The site has been closed to the public for over a decade and we're excited to be reactivating this amazing space with art, culture and exploration.
Thamesview Golf Centre has been out of use for over a decade, leaving the attached green spaces fenced off and inaccessible to the public. The site hosts a neglected two story clubhouse with rooftop viewing platforms, a paved forecourt and two large fields separated by chain link fencing.
Developing ideas for Winter Sculpture Park submissions requires a consideration of the land for installation and durability. The No.32 team is here to support your plans with this! So do give us a nudge if you have any questions or need some advice.

Having graduated in 2020 with BA Fine Art from Birmingham School of Art, he has since been awarded numerous prizes, including the Tate prize and the ACS studio prize. Judges Gavin Turk and Celia Paul said: ‘Dion’s work is dealing with the reality of being an artist in his environment. He takes the outside world and puts it into work, asking the question “what does it mean to him to be an artist?” I think he has a fascinating approach to his environment.’ – Gavin Turk ‘His work reminded me of poetry, there is a dark humour in it which reminds me of Philip Larkin. Dion’s practice is very appropriate to this particular time and the focus that it gives on how to turn things into playfulness. I’m moved by them.’ – Celia Paul (Text via @hyphastudios) For more information on the work of Dion Kitson go to: https://www.dionkitson.com To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofarts For full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.org Email: ministryofartsorg@gmail.com Social Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. | Akshita Gandhi - MoA Bonus Episode 09 | 18 May 2022 | 00:24:34
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Akshita Gandhi (@iamakshitagandhi) A Love Letter to My Home A solo exhibition of new work by Akshita Gandhi Is India truly free seventy-five years after its independence? The Indian Independence Act, which established India's independence from British imperialism, went into effect in August 1947. However, the act partitioned India, causing significant social divisions. What is India's post-colonial identity now, amidst social and political upheaval and increasing censorship? And how does the surrounding architecture reflect the residents' vitality and spirit? Photographer and multimedia artist Akshita Gandhi strives to answer these questions in her solo exhibition "A Love Letter To My Home." Presented at The Nehru Centre by Gabriel Fine Arts to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, Gandhi’s work casts new light on Mumbai and Udaipur, revealing cityscapes in flux and essentially coming undone.

| KAI LAB - MoA Bonus Episode 08 | 15 May 2022 | 00:29:28 | |
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to KAI LAB (@kai.lab_)
We are a London-based arts and design practice that creates electronic, mechanical and sonic artworks. All with backgrounds in the physical sciences, we place a heavy emphasis on research and development. Our projects are driven by the desire to understand the core components of intriguing, complex and beautiful natural phenomena. Each artwork aims to make tangible the intangible, and invites the audience to use all their senses to experience a new perception of the environment. The observation of nature shows that the beauty of physical events is often the result of the strict rules of physics combined with the randomness of our chaotic environment. Our work aims to find the delicate balance between what technology can control and what randomness can disrupt, to build objects and spaces that are relatable yet surprising. Our research into micro and macro natural phenomena and our desire to work with these in new ways often leads to the development of novel electrical and mechanical technologies. We use these systems to power our own pieces as well as those of collaborators across a number of fields and industries.

| Ep.173 Pure Evil - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 08 May 2022 | 01:12:47 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Pure Evil (@pureevilgallery) Pure Evil was born Charles Uzzell Edwards in South Wales in 1968. He grew up in a world of art thanks to his father, Welsh painter John Uzzell Edwards . The father’s artwork undoubtedly impacted his son, demonstrated in a range of influences from Cubism to Minimalism, from Picasso to Chagall. The physical and cultural landscape of the 1990’s U.S. intrigued and beckoned the young Pure Evil, and upon completing his studies in graphics and fashion in London he picked up his skateboard and set off for California’s West Coast. He established himself in San Francisco, working for the Anarchic Adjustment clothing label as a clothing designer / pattern cutter / graphic designer. He produced countless t-shirt graphics for screen printing, dropped in on the West Coast rave scene, and travelled to Japan where West Coast Streetwear was a hot item. Pure Evil also became involved in the musical fabric of San Francisco and DJ'ed and was an electronic recording artist for Pete Namlook’s ambient electronic music label, FAX (based in Frankfurt, Germany). | Ep.172 kennardphillipps - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 03 May 2022 | 01:07:42
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to kennardphillipps (@kennardphillipps) kennardphillipps is a collaboration between Peter Kennard and Cat Phillipps working since 2002 to produce art in response to the invasion of Iraq. It has evolved to confront power and war across the globe. The work is made for the street, the gallery, the web, newspapers & magazines, and to lead workshops that develop peoples’ skills and help them express their thoughts on what’s happening in the world through visual means. The work is made as a critical tool that connects to international movements for social and political change. kennardphillipps don’t see the work as separate to social and political movements that are confronting established political and economic systems, they see it as part of those movements, the visual arm of protest. They want it to be used by people as a part of their own activism, not just as pictures on the wall to contemplate. To facilitate this, as well as selling their limited edition prints on the site enabling them to fund the making of the work, there is a free download page of images with a voluntary contribution to the International Solidarity Movement. | Ep.171 Paul Kneen - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 20 Apr 2022 | 00:47:05
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Paul Kneen (@paulkneenart)
Art allows me to be free. It takes me on unexpected journeys not just within my creative process but through the opportunities art has presented along the way. Street art was one of those journeys. It opened my eyes to a whole new world of splats, drips and spray paint. It gave me the confidence to be more creative, more experimental and to have more fun. Through the likes of Banksy and co I also realised that art could make a statement. This sparked something inside me so, much of my work is based around social/political issues such as animal poaching, rich/poor divide, political incompetency etc, but refusing to be pigeon-holed, I experiment with style, technique and medium allowing the process to evolve. For me that’s when the exciting, unplanned things happen.

| Arturo García de las Heras - MoA Bonus Episode 07 | 07 Apr 2022 | 00:43:35 | |
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Arturo García de las Heras (@agheras73)
“I love sharing my artwork and love the feeling of reward when somebody is interested on it. I look for impacting lovely warm images, to make the spectator feel good and somehow linked to the artwork he/she is observing. I must admit I don't have a profound philosophy behind my artwork (paintings, photography or sculpture), transmitting peace, happiness, that´s my philosophy.”
“I am in a permanent search for beautiful, nice, images suitable for almost everyone. In those images I seek for relaxation, admiration, surprise, or even a smile. Images that never generate discord, conflict, discrimination, rejection, criticism... I'm driven by aesthetics; I'm afraid I'm not the kind of artist who dresses his artwork surrounded by a profound philosophy or a deep interpretation of life…”

| Ep.169 Elizabeth Prentis - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 28 Mar 2022 | 01:16:42 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Elizabeth Prentis (@elizabethprentis)
Elizabeth is currently exploring painting and is developing a body of 2D work with performative ties. Bold and direct, Prentis' paintings are often confronting- challenging the audience on their own boundaries and expectations. Prentis' practice is not tied to one medium in particular; paintings act as blueprints for sculptures, performances, video-art, props and art installations. The process is open ended and experimental.
Prentis explores sexual pleasure and encourages discussion surrounding sex. Her practice digests ideas of dominance, power play, gender expectation and patriarchy in heterosexual encounters. Drawing on her own experiences, Prentis encourages a wider discourse surrounding sex, sexual exploration, respect and the importance of female pleasure.

| Laxmi Hussain - MoA Bonus Episode 06 | 25 Mar 2022 | 00:38:20 | |
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Laxmi Hussain (@thislakshmi)
Elegant and ethereal but also precise and geometric, Laxmi Hussain’s drawings and paintings exist somewhere between the abstract and the realistic, often presenting what appear to be the free-flowing organic forms of the body through intricately ordered patterns. Her finely detailed line forms are rooted in a fascination with architecture, a subject she studied for several years before becoming disillusioned with the constraints and rigidity of the discipline and shifting her focus to the unconstrained creative possibilities offered by art.
Her inspiration comes from the forms encountered in everyday life, from the body, the tenderness of motherhood, the natural shapes of the body as a vessel and its evolution throughout life. Working in several different media, usually at night, Laxmi is driven by experimentation, constantly exploring new techniques and searching for the shapes and subjects they express best. Often, her work includes elements that appear incomplete, obliging the viewer to pause and engage with the artwork, filling in the absences themselves rather than just dismissing it and moving on.

| James Vaulkhard - MoA Bonus Episode 05 | 18 Mar 2022 | 00:27:01 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to James Vaulkhard (@jamesvaulkhard)
James Vaulkhard holds a BA degree in History of Art from Leeds University, and has both trained and taught at Charles Cecil Studios and Studio Della Statua in Florence, Italy. Here, he gained a formidable reputation for his ability to embrace and manifest traditional techniques in both portraiture and sculpture. Notably, upon his graduation in 2013, Vaulkhard was commissioned to participate in a bridge project between Italy and Kenya, developing the preliminary studies for The Sacred Heart Cathedral Kericho in collaboration with local Kenyan sculptors.
In his most recent work, Vaulkhard has combined techniques developed in both these series of works and married them to the aesthetic arena of Japanese art, specifically addressing the mysterious concept of Ma or negative space. The result is a series of abstract landscapes intended to draw the viewer deeper into nature via an overwhelming visual cacophony that seeks to communicate the vast potentialities that exist between the elements.
‘World Waxed Green’ opens at Asia House on 23-28 March and is curated by MC Llamas

| Ep.167 Karen Turner - Ministry of Arts Podcast | 14 Mar 2022 | 00:54:33 | |
In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kare Turner (@karen_turner_artist)
A figure and portrait artist, her paintings mostly feature women and are a commentary on the weight of expectations placed on the female sex. With a particular focus on the physical body and the scrutiny to which it is commonly subjected, she works in oils and seeks to highlight pigments in the skin that can often go unnoticed, emphasising and exaggerating them to accentuate their extraordinariness.
In 2020 Karen’s work was selected for the Portraits for NHS Heroes exhibition and the accompanying Bloomsbury book, and in May 2021 she was awarded the President’s Prize at the Institute of East Anglian Artists Open Exhibition. She was a finalist in the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize 2021 and has
been shortlisted for both the New Emergence Art Prize 2022 and the Women United Art Prize 2021. In March she will be exhibiting at The Other Art Fair in London, where she has been selected as the Fair Director's Pick.
