  • Mindfulness has kept me more calm and more neutral. Sometimes people think I don't have any feelings.
  • I've learned that most of my feelings come from thoughts and if I'm aware of the thoughts and can deal with them at that level, then I don't have to have the emotional outbursts.
  • I still cry when I see cats and skunks playing together on YouTube. I cry at movies. I don't cry so much about loss. I cry more at the joy of beauty and love.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I do breathing exercises as part of my yoga and my meditation practices in the morning.
  • I studied Kundalini Yoga with a yoga teacher back in my '30s [and learned] to do that breath of fire real fast.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • My dad was an alcoholic, and he got violent when he got drunk. If I wasn't careful, I would get beaten, so I would literally hide inside the radio.
  • I would wait till he went to bed so he couldn't find me because he was violent. So I got bullied by him. He was a verbal bully as well as a physical bully.
  • I got bullied as a kid in school too.

  • My Father
Effect On Emotions
  • Mindfulness is helping me a lot. I tend to be quite reserved, finding it difficult to express my feelings even with those I love. It often feels like I have a protective barrier preventing me from showing my emotions to avoid getting hurt.
  • However, mindfulness is encouraging me to push past this comfort zone. It’s important to connect with and share your feelings with those who care about you and whom you care about. This practice is helping me open up more and build deeper connections.
Thoughts On Breathing
  • I'm getting into breathing techniques. Our head of marketing, one of my employees, is very dedicated to these practices and has been encouraging me to focus more on my breathing.
  • She believes my life is chaotic and insists I need to take 15 to 20 minutes a day to meditate and control my breathing. She says it will help regulate how I think, process things, and approach my day. I started a week ago, and so far, it’s going well.
Bullying Story
  • I'm the eldest of eight siblings, and I'm particularly close to one brother who is just a year younger than me. We went to school together, attended the same parties, and shared many friends.
  • I remember a time when some bigger kids were bullying him. It was a tough situation because I had to decide whether to confront the cool kids or not, knowing they might start bullying me too.
  • I chose to stand up to them, and fortunately, they understood me, and the bullying stopped. I've seen close friends go through traumatic experiences during those years, typically between ages 13 and 15, when kids can be especially mean.
  • One of my best friends, who was bullied at school, is now one of the strongest people I know, both mentally and professionally. His resilience was forged through those tough times.

  • JJ DiGeronimo believes that when things happen in life, it's better to think they are happening for you, not to you. This means instead of feeling like a victim and saying, “Why is this happening to me?” she looks at it like, “Why is this happening for me?”
  • This small change in thinking has made a big difference in how she deals with everything in her life. Instead of feeling upset and saying, “How could this happen?” she tries to understand the message or lesson in the situation.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • JJ DiGeronimo talked about a special way to deal with overwhelming thoughts and feelings using breathing. When her mind keeps going in circles about something like a problem at work or a tough conversation, she does a “lassoing” exercise.
  • She imagines putting her fingers on her forehead and then “lassoing” or roping in those thoughts. She pulls them down from her head, over her face, and into her heart. It's like moving the energy from her mind to her heart to calm down.
  • If there's still some worry left, she does it again until she feels better. You can also imagine breathing out the stress from the top of your head and out your mouth to help calm your mind. JJ encourages you as a listener to raise your frequency with a mindfulness practice.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • I've faced bullying many times in my life, especially in high school. There was this one girl who had a tough life; her mom passed away early, and her dad made bad choices, so she took it out on others. I was so scared of her that I would hide in the school office, even during lunch, because I was the class treasurer. Every time I saw her, I froze with fear.
  • One day, I couldn't take it anymore. I decided I had to confront this fear and end it. Bullies may seem tough on the outside, but inside, they often feel weak and lonely. So, I went up to her and said, “Today, one of us is ending up in the hospital, and I won't stop until that happens.” I scared her by facing the problem head-on.
  • Years later, she apologized on Facebook, and we've become friends. We live in different towns, but we've built a strong virtual relationship, and I've even shared some inspiring books with her. I realized I didn't want someone else to control my energy with their negativity, and that made all the difference.

New Beginnings04 Sep 202300:10:53

Today, we're diving deep into the connection between mindfulness and new beginnings. Life is a constant journey of change, filled with opportunities for fresh starts and new chapters. Here in my area of Canada, school will start on September 6, which gave me the idea to delve into new beginnings. Whether it's a new job, a new relationship, a move to a different city, or simply a shift in mindset, new beginnings offer a chance for growth, transformation, and renewal. But how can we approach these transitions with clarity, presence, and intention?

In this episode, we'll explore five key points illustrating the beautiful synergy between mindfulness and new beginnings. We'll discover how the practice of mindfulness can empower us to navigate these transitions with grace, awareness, and resilience. So, if you're ready to embrace change and embark on a journey of self-discovery, get ready to be inspired.

Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify 5 key points as to how mindfulness can help with new beginnings: Embracing Change

Mindfulness encourages individuals to accept and embrace change as an inevitable part of life. New beginnings often involve significant changes, and mindfulness helps people stay present and open to these changes without resistance or fear.

Letting Go of the Past:

New beginnings often require letting go of the past, whether it's old habits, relationships, or ways of thinking. Mindfulness teaches individuals to acknowledge their past experiences without judgment and to release attachments to them, allowing for a fresh start.

Living in the Present Moment:

Mindfulness emphasizes the importance of living in the present moment. When starting something new, it's easy to get caught up in anticipation or anxiety about the future. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, help individuals stay grounded in the here and now.

Cultivating Self-Awareness:

Starting anew provides an opportunity for self-reflection and self-discovery. Mindfulness practices promote self-awareness by encouraging individuals to observe their thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. This self-awareness can be a valuable tool for making intentional choices in new beginnings.

Patience and Resilience:

Mindfulness fosters patience and resilience, which are essential qualities during times of change and uncertainty. By staying present, acknowledging challenges without judgment, and practicing self-compassion, individuals can navigate new beginnings with greater resilience and adaptability.

I've worked with Greg on projects related to brands like Spider-Man and Power Rangers. We crossed paths back in '94 or '95, both joining the company around the same time. We played a big role in launching and expanding projects stemming from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a massive hit among kids. Greg and I teamed up with higher-ups to handle creative and administrative aspects. My main focus was creating a positive work environment, addressing coworkers' concerns, and making the company a more mindful place. However, I eventually moved away from the business because I didn't want to keep pushing products to kids. I believed childhood and life had more to offer than disposable plastic toys. While I gained valuable experience, this aspect bothered me. Nonetheless, I learned about team building and fostering a supportive atmosphere within a corporate context.

What Is Stir The Paint?

Gregory Copploe: I host events called Stir The Paint Nights, which is my rebranding of what was formerly Paint Night Seattle. These gatherings bring people together to create art on canvas. Through these events, I've learned a lot about people's personalities and emotions as they express themselves on the canvas. As someone with heightened awareness, I can sense their self-criticism, high expectations, and even anxiety. Sometimes I ask participants why they're anxious, and often they can't pinpoint the source. They just want to excel at the activity. I remind them that they're already good at it and that talent can develop over time. We don't need to start out as experts; we can nurture our abilities. These insights from Stir The Paint Nights actually influenced my book. I took the struggles and personal growth I observed and incorporated them into the journey of the protagonist in my writing.

The Process of Writing I Am Pink

Dani Forrest: When talking about writing “I am Pink,” I was asked if any sections I strongly felt about ended up being left out of the final book. At first, Greg sent me a draft while I was in Kauai, which is a special place for me, full of inspiration. The story's core was there, and I loved it. Yet, there were parts about mindfulness practices and nutrition that I worried might divert from the main message. I wanted the heart of the story to shine, so we left out detailed explanations to keep the focus on the characters' relationships.

How To Take On Brokenness?

Gregory Copploe: When I asked myself about taking on that brokenness, I realized it's actually quite beautiful. We all have our flaws, and embracing them can be a beautiful thing. It's about putting those broken pieces together to create healing. Running these events, I often sense that healing happening. When we finish, there's a change in the atmosphere, an energy shift. This change is something Justin, the protagonist, also feels. He's connecting with experiences that finally feel genuine and true to him. It's like he's encountering love, a connection with animals, and a bond with nature for the very first time.

Busy-Free Zone28 Aug 202300:09:47

Cultivating a Busy-Free Zone through Mindfulness is today’s topic, and one that I believe will resonate with a lot of Mindful Tribe listeners. As a result of our fast-paced world, the desire to be constantly busy often clouds our sense of clarity and serenity. That’s why today, we’re going on a journey to discover how mindfulness can positively transform the way we navigate our lives. From mindful task management to the art of setting boundaries, each step we explore is a powerful tool in reclaiming your time, serenity, and overall well-being. So, let's dive into the art of creating a life of intention and tranquility. Cultivating a life of living in a “Busy-Free Zone” through mindfulness is achievable.

Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify

Here are five ways mindfulness can help you achieve a Busy-Free Zone:

1/ Mindful Task Management

Mindful Task Management involves approaching your tasks with deliberate intention. Instead of dividing your attention among multiple things, focus on one task at a time. Immerse yourself fully in that task, bringing awareness to each step and detail. This intentional engagement enhances your efficiency as you give your best to each task. This approach curtails the frantic rush of attempting too much at once, fostering a sense of calm productivity.

2/ Mindful Reflection

Mindful Reflection is nurtured through consistent mindfulness practice. It cultivates a natural inclination for thoughtful introspection. Incorporating brief pauses in your day enables you to contemplate your tasks and commitments. This practice unveils insights into your genuine priorities. By acknowledging what holds true value, you empower yourself to make mindful choices. This discernment counteracts the impulse to be incessantly busy, allowing you to allocate your time and energy to pursuits aligned with your core values and aspirations.

3/ Setting Boundaries

Setting Boundaries becomes attainable through the practice of mindfulness. This awareness enables you to establish defined limits and confidently decline tasks that don't align with your priorities. Mindfulness heightens your sensitivity to how different activities impact your well-being. This newfound discernment empowers you to say no when necessary, preventing overcommitment and the drain of unnecessary busyness. By honoring your boundaries, you create a space for meaningful engagement and ensure that your time is devoted to what truly matters.

4/ Embracing Mindful Breaks

Embracing Mindful Breaks is an essential practice to infuse calmness into your day. Regular pauses, approached with mindfulness, offer a chance to recharge your mind and avert burnout. These brief breaks provide an opportunity to reset your mental state, ensuring you approach tasks with heightened clarity and energy. By weaving mindful breaks into your routine, you counteract the relentless pace of constant busyness. These moments become anchors of tranquility, enhancing your overall well-being and productivity. To help with your mindful breaks, you can download the Minimalist Pomodoro Timer or the Take a Break app.

5/ Letting Go of Multitasking

Letting Go of Multitasking is a core principle in mindfulness that transforms your approach to tasks. Mindfully engaging in one task at a time, devoting your full attention, fosters heightened efficiency and a richer experience. By immersing yourself wholly in each endeavor, you harness mindfulness's power to enhance both productivity and presence. This intentional focus diminishes the inclination to juggle numerous tasks simultaneously, aligning with your aim of cultivating a busy-free zone. This shift not only optimizes outcomes but also nurtures a deeper sense of accomplishment and tranquility.

Healing A Brain Injury; Laura Renner24 Aug 202300:31:29

Laura Renner is a nurse turned author. Healing a brain injury is the topic of today's podcast. Laura received a brain injury in 2021, and because of this, she started thinking about her past. She discovered she had complex post-traumatic stress disorder from when she was a child. In an attempt to recover, she spent about a year and a half trying different ways to heal from her trauma. She wrote a book called “No, I'm Not Fine. Thank You.” In this book, Laura talks about how she got better from her old wounds and became strong again. Now, she spends her time learning about how to heal her body and mind from trauma, and she helps other people do the same thing. Laura first wanted to take care of babies in neonatal intensive care. However, because she had health problems, she had to focus on getting better and writing her story. In her book, she tells about her struggle with anxiety, strange health issues, and how she learned about the things that happened to her when she was younger. Laura knows a lot about different ways to heal from trauma, like something called Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, craniosacral therapy, neurofeedback, and how to control your nervous system. She also knows about getting better after a brain injury and how our brains can change, which is called neuroplasticity. She can teach us how to change our thinking, about taking care of babies in the hospital, and about how to speak up for yourself when you're getting medical help. Laura wants her book and what she's been through to help other people feel inspired and to find their own way to heal.

  • Mindfulness helped Laura understand and express her emotions. Before, she felt scared to show feelings, staying frustrated and avoiding tears.
  • Mindfulness changed this by highlighting emotions' importance for mental and physical health.
  • Emotions are natural and meaningful, offering a release. This realization greatly aided Laura's well-being.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Laura emphasizes the power of intentional deep breathing and breathwork. She practices this several times daily for its benefit to the nervous system. It shows the brain that things are safe, promoting a calm state.
  • This simple technique, easily done while driving or walking, offers rapid and significant improvements for maintaining calmness and well-being.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • Laura Renner's history involves childhood bullying from family, friends, and school, but her major insight was self-bullying. She coined it her “inner critic,” using negativity to spur action.
  • Negative self-talk trapped her in self-doubt, shame, and worthlessness. Engaging in deep self-work through books and podcasts, she transformed this pattern.
  • Overcoming ingrained self-critique, she replaced it with self-compassion. This shift marked a pivotal point in her healing.
  • Laura now advocates self-kindness and mindfulness, showcasing the potential for inner change and personal growth.
Words of Wisdom
  • Despite progress in addressing trauma and becoming more open about our experiences, many still find it scary to be vulnerable and share their struggles. Fear of judgment holds us back.
  • Laura understands this fear but believes that talking about mental health and trauma can break this cycle of fear. Her book's title, “No, I'm Not Fine,” encourages honesty.
  • Opening up and starting conversations about healing is crucial.

Digital Detox Mindfulness21 Aug 202300:12:08

Today I’m discussing Digital Detox Mindfulness. In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world, a lot of people are constantly connected to their devices. This can cause problems, including stress, distraction, and reduced well-being. It can be a huge benefit to disconnect from your screens or reduce screen time, even if it’s just for a short period. My conversation today is about finding balance in the digital age. I will be discussing strategies to create tech-free zones or time blocks, cultivating awareness of the impact of technology on mental health, and maybe sharing a few personal stories of the benefits gained from unplugging.

Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify

Five Ways To Create Tech-Free Zones:

1/ Designated Areas

Choose specific places in your home, like the dining room or bedroom, where technology is not allowed. This creates clear boundaries and promotes relaxation.

2/ Set Tech-Free Hours

Establish certain hours of the day as tech-free, such as during meals or before bedtime. Use this time for other activities like reading or spending time with loved ones.

3/ Silence Notifications

Turn off non-essential notifications to minimize distractions and interruptions, allowing you to stay focused on the present moment.

4/ Device-Free Rituals

Create pre-sleep and wake-up routines that don't involve screens. This helps you start and end your day mindfully without immediately engaging with technology.

5/ Screen-Free Day

Dedicate one day of the week to be completely screen-free. Use this day for offline activities that rejuvenate you and foster real-world connections.

  • Mindfulness has helped me a lot in dealing with my emotions. In life, we all go through tough times, and when something hurts us, we might try to hide our feelings.
  • This can help in the beginning, but if you keep avoiding those feelings for a long time, it doesn't really help anymore.
  • With mindfulness, I've learned to be more aware of the feelings that make me uncomfortable. Instead of ignoring them, I let them come and face them. This helps my mind feel better. It's like a process.
  • And you know what? These uncomfortable feelings won't ever really go away. That's normal for everyone. But mindfulness helps me by first noticing when these feelings show up.
  • Then, instead of trying to push them away, I look at them closely. Mindfulness is really good at helping me with that.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is something we do all the time without even thinking about it, until we stop.
  • But you can actually pay attention to your breath.
  • Like with my students, I often do an exercise where we count our breaths. We breathe in, that's one, and breathe out, that's two, and so on up to ten.
  • We close our eyes and just focus on breathing. It's a great way to notice your breath.
  • Even if thoughts come into your mind, you just notice them and then get back to focusing on your breathing. It's like a strong anchor.
  • When I started practicing mindfulness, I spent about six months just learning how to breathe properly again.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • I've had a couple of younger students who were bullied in the past two years. One story that stands out is about a really nice student of mine. He always loved music, and his parents wanted to give him music lessons. Our paths crossed, and I remember helping him by creating a positive space where he could explore his feelings and who he was without any judgment. I focused on boosting his self-confidence.
  • Over about a year, I saw a big change in him. Music somehow became like a special power for him. It helped him become more aware of himself and more confident. And you know what? The bullying he was facing got a bit better. He became a bright and unique person. Sometimes, it's tough for colorful and unique people to fit in, especially when everyone around seems to do things the same way.
Words of Wisdom
  • You are amazing. We are here together and we experience the human condition. Life is really hard; life can be crazy.
  • But there's also so much magic out there. Find and appreciate the magic in your family, with your friends, with strangers, with nature, and with your dog and cat. Embrace every little bit of magic.

A Most Shocking Element Of Mindfulness14 Aug 202300:10:27

A most shocking element of mindfulness that many of my Mindful Tribe followers find surprising is the concept of “Non-Striving.” This focuses on letting go of the constant need to achieve or attain specific outcomes. In a world driven by goals and accomplishments, the idea of intentionally not striving for something might seem counterintuitive, yet, it holds a profound wisdom.

Exploring the practice of Non-Striving in mindfulness can reveal how letting go of the relentless pursuit of results can lead to greater contentment and inner peace. By simply being present in the moment and accepting things as they are, individuals can discover a sense of fulfillment without the pressure of always striving for more. This counter-cultural approach can offer a fresh perspective on how mindfulness encourages us to find value in the present rather than constantly chasing future achievements.

Today, I’m sharing three key points about the surprising element of mindfulness known as the concept of “Non-Striving”

Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify 1/ Embracing The Now

Entirely change how you think about the present moment. We all know mindfulness is often associated with being present and attentive. Allow yourself to embrace the concept of Non-Striving as a way to experience the present moment differently. In a world that emphasizes setting and achieving goals, Non-Striving challenges the notion that constant striving is necessary for fulfillment. Instead, it encourages individuals to let go of the pressure to achieve specific outcomes and simply be present with whatever is happening right now. This allows for a deeper connection with your experiences, allowing you to have a healthier sense of contentment and peace without the need for constant achievement.

2/ Letting Go Of Attachment To Results

Non-Striving invites you to release attachment to the results of your actions. Living life with less emphasis on striving recognizes that the pursuit of external achievements can lead to stress, anxiety, and a sense of never-ending dissatisfaction. By letting go of the attachment to specific outcomes, you can approach your life with a more open and curious mindset. This approach doesn't negate the importance of setting goals, but it encourages a shift in focus from fixating on the end result to enjoying the journey and the process itself. This mental shift can lead to reduced stress and an increased sense of ease in daily life.

3/ Cultivating A Mindful Attitude

Practicing Non-Striving fosters a mindful attitude that is non-judgmental, patient, and compassionate. When individuals, and when I say individuals I mean you and me, when we stop constantly striving and allow experiences to unfold naturally, we create space for self-acceptance and self-awareness. This attitude extends beyond the individual, influencing how they interact with others and their surroundings. Non-Striving encourages individuals to approach challenges with a sense of curiosity and openness, which can lead to more creative problem-solving and healthier relationships. By embracing this surprising element of mindfulness, individuals can find a balanced and fulfilling way of engaging with the world around them.

If you’ve ever read writings by Eckhart Tolle, these ideas may sound familiar. I highly recommend his books, A New Earth, Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose or The Power of Now, A Guide To Spiritual Enlightenment. (See links below)

Music For Meditation; Kevin Roth10 Aug 202300:38:22

Kevin Roth began to play the dulcimer in 1972 at the age of thirteen and is now known for his dulcimer music for meditation. Back at age sixteen, he recorded his first album which immediately launched him into international fame. Between 1974 and 1984, Roth recorded ten albums, establishing himself as a prominent folk singer and dulcimer player. In 1984, Roth performed the theme to the PBS-TV children’s show Shining Time Station. That project brought him to another new and much larger market. His friendship and collaboration in 2006 with Noel Paul Stookey, of the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, further cemented Roth in American folk history. His career took him to concert and symphony stages around the world, to festivals, radio, television shows, and two appearances at the White House. Roth now guides individuals and groups in discovering what truly matters to them, how to accomplish their goals, and how handling stress is an essential factor in a healthy life.

  • Kevin Roth talked about emotions and mindfulness. He mentioned how normal feelings like anger and frustration come up for everyone, but he doesn't let them control him. He compares these feelings to bubbles that pop quickly. He believes that these feelings aren't real and that he doesn't need to get stuck in them.
  • Kevin explained that when people believe their thoughts, they can suffer, even in simple situations like waiting in line for coffee. He gave an example of someone cutting in line. He pointed out that maybe they're just waiting for coffee and not intentionally trying to skip the line. Mindfulness, according to Kevin, is recognizing that these thoughts come and go, and we don't have to give them too much importance. Thoughts might be there one moment and gone the next.
  • He shared a story about a person who disliked her boss and had to talk to her on the computer for a short time every Monday. Kevin helped her realize that she only spent a small part of her workweek dealing with her boss, but she was carrying negative feelings about her all the time.
  • Kevin found it surprising how we do these things without even realizing it. He believes that mindfulness can help us become aware of our thoughts and emotions and not let them control our feelings and actions.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • My advice is to just keep breathing; just keep doing it. I don't do any breathwork because I don't personally need it.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • Kevin Roth didn't personally experience bullying, but he knows about a program created to counter bullying by his friend Peter Yaro. The program is called Operation Respect, and it's for schools all around the world.
  • Peter Paul Mary, a famous folk music group, recorded a song for Operation Respect called “Don't Laugh at Me.”
  • Kevin performed in a concert with Peter Yaro to support this anti-bullying initiative. Although Kevin doesn't have a bullying story, he's aware of the importance of this program and how Peter Yaro is still actively involved in it. If you want to learn more, you can search for Peter Yaro and Operation Respect.
Words of Wisdom
  • Be happy. You can be happy. You have to choose it.

Mindfulness; 3 Core Elements07 Aug 202300:11:53

Three core elements of mindfulness is the topic of today's episode. At its simplest level, to be mindful is to pay attention on purpose. To be aware, to breathe, to be still, and to observe. Mindfulness is also to experience what is happening in this very moment in time. Mindfulness is to accept without judgment the thoughts and emotions you experience.

Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify 1/ Being Present

Mindfulness is about being fully present and aware of what's happening right now. It's like focusing on the present moment on purpose. By doing this, you can learn more about yourself, your thoughts, and your biases. Instead of dwelling on the past or constantly thinking about the future, mindfulness helps us stay in the “now.”

When you practice mindfulness, you pay attention to what you're doing or feeling at the moment. This can be as simple as focusing on your breathing. For example, you can say to yourself, “I am breathing in, I am breathing out” as you take slow breaths. By doing this, you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings without getting lost in worries or regrets.

Mindfulness can help reduce stress and negative emotions like anxiety and sadness. It's like taking a break from our usual worries and being more present with ourselves and the world around us. You can practice mindfulness through meditation, yoga, or even by doing one thing at a time and giving it your full attention.

For instance, right now, I'm writing this without any distractions, like meetings or emails. It's a simple idea, but it can make a big difference in how we feel and understand ourselves. So, focus on the present moment and give it your energy and attention because it's the only moment that truly matters.

2/ Acceptance

Mindfulness means accepting things as they are and being open to whatever may come. It's not just about focusing on the present moment; there's also an attitude that goes along with it. This attitude is described as being open, accepting, and curious.

To practice mindfulness, people learn to sit quietly and pay attention to what's happening inside them at any given moment. The goal is to let thoughts and emotions flow naturally without trying to control or judge everything that happens. This can be hard for beginners and even experienced practitioners can find it challenging to stay accepting and open for long periods.

In our culture, we're often taught that some thoughts and emotions are better than others, and we should try to stop our thoughts or change our emotions. But mindfulness encourages acceptance and openness, which can lead to a sense of stillness. Just being still and observing without trying to change anything might feel strange or uncomfortable, but that's the idea – to simply “be” in the moment.

When we're still, thoughts and emotions come and go quickly or slowly, and they can change without us trying to make them change. Becoming aware of these patterns inside us and being curious about them is an important first step in practicing mindfulness.

In addition to being present and having the right attitude, there are three more elements of mindfulness that we'll be discussing in this book. These elements help capture the true spirit and essence of mindfulness, and they're important for applying mindfulness in sports and other areas of life.

3/ Being Non-Judgmental

Mindfulness includes an important aspect called “Nonjudging,” which means not judging or labeling our thoughts and emotions. In many cognitive behavioral techniques, there is a tendency to judge and label our thoughts and feelings, but mindfulness encourages us to take a different approach.

Imagine you're sitting by a river, and your thoughts and emotions are like things floating down the river. Instead of getting caught up in each thought or emotion, you can observe them from a distance. This helps us realize that not all our thoughts are rational, and some emotions aren't connected to what's happening right now. We don't have to believe everything our mind tells us.

For example, if athletes often feel anxious about their performance, they might label themselves as “chokers” or “head cases.” Mindfulness can teach them to see that anxiety comes and goes, and it doesn't define who they are. It's the same with feelings like grief or depression; they are part of our experience but don't define us.

Having a nonjudgmental attitude allows us to accept the present moment as it is, without categorizing everything as good or bad. It gives us the space to linger in the present and fully experience it without constantly judging and evaluating everything.

In mindfulness, the first step is getting to the present moment, but the nonjudging attitude is what allows us to accept and appreciate it fully. By observing our thoughts and emotions from a safe distance, we can better understand our internal patterns and have a more meaningful experience in the present moment.

Effect On Emotions
  • I recognize emotions as Messengers. The entire spectrum of emotions always serves us. One of our challenges, I feel, is that we hold on to them, and of course, they become dense, sit in our tissues, and create illness of one sort or another.
  • So, mindfulness has allowed me to understand the role of emotions and that they're all quite sacred.
Thoughts On Breathing
  • Breathwork is an incredible tool, and if that's all one has, it does incredible things for our bodies—not only emotionally but physiologically. If you hold the right nostril down and just breathe in and release through the mouth, the parasympathetic system is responsive to that.
  • It can help calm, bring things down, and lower anxiety. So whether we're outside or we're in a room, if we're able to use our breathing, it does wonders for us, from mindfulness, for the presence of mind and body
Bullying Story
  • I was a school liaison officer in Scarborough and worked with my partner. We had a ball. We handled all the elementary schools in 42 division, which was over 70 schools that we split between each other.
  • We worked as a team in the high schools and elementary schools, and we were dedicated to creating human-to-human relationships. The kids would see us and call us by our first names and recognize that the stigma doesn't define the institution.

Effect on Emotions
  • Regarding emotions, for me, mindfulness creates self-awareness. I mean, you're looking at somebody who can be a class a jerk from time to time. And so I am mindful of how my quick words or snotty snide remarks might affect someone. That can hold me back.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • On the topic of breathing, In the book, I quote the work of Dr. Sharon Melnick, Ph.D. She's a clinical psychologist on the topic of resilience.
  • Dr. Melnick talks about breathing techniques, as does Donald Altman, whom I also quote. So breathing from the diaphragm is important.

But when you are speaking, do what opera singers do; breathe from your diaphragm, so you're more filled with air. When we do this deep breathing thing, we are becoming more physically centered, and I like to think that we're also emotionally centered that way too, Bruce.

Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • John Baldoni shared his experiences with bullying, both as a child and in the workplace.
  • He talked about the harmful impact of a “Bully Boss” who denigrates others and lacks empathy.
  • Mindfulness, he believes, is essential in coaching to create self-awareness and encourage personal growth. While it might not work with sociopaths, helping others adopt a different perspective can address bullying behavior.
  • Being mindful allows us to recognize our imperfections and strive to improve for a better future.
Words of Wisdom
  • Look for the good in others. Try to look for virtues.

Cooking and Mindfulness31 Jul 202300:10:03

Cooking and Mindfulness is the topic of today’s episode. Cooking can give you focus and groundedness, as well as a feeling of choice. You can choose whatever healthy ingredients you want to use, and you can avoid unhealthy ingredients. You can choose how you feel about cooking and decide to use it as an activity you feel good about.

Choice

Like I said, you have freedom and choice when you are cooking. At least that's how I look at it. You can cook a simple dish or something more complicated. You can cook something decadent or something super basic and healthy. Having those kinds of choices is a good feeling.

Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Life Sustaining

It feels good to be able to create something that is life-sustaining. I like to cook for my family and also enjoy cooking for myself. Being able to provide nourishment is a great feeling.

Focus

It's easy to get centered and focused when you cook. It's a step-by-step process and you need to sort out the steps and take them methodically in order. Doing something that helps me get focused feels comfortable and enjoyable. It's definitely my happy place.

Giving

I enjoy giving and being able to cook for someone is a pleasurable giving experience for me. Even if I'm cooking for myself, I still feel like it's a giving experience. Why do I feel this way? The answer is likely connected to my experience of growing up, cooking on the farm for my family. I often helped my mom in the kitchen. I enjoyed making casseroles, mock duck, pineapple upside-down cake, and apple-rhubarb pandowdy. It feel great when our family enjoyed the food that I had prepared.

Confidence

Cooking helps me feel confident. I know I will always have a second chance to improve at cooking, so I feel like I can continue to get better at cooking. As I improve, I will become more confident with what I'm doing in the kitchen.

Cleaning Up

This may sound strange to you, but I enjoy cleaning up. Like Thich Nhat Hanh, I find washing dishes to be a very mindful experience. Do you enjoy washing dishes? Let me know cleaning up is a mindful experience for you. Email me your thoughts, at bruce@mindfulnessmode.com

  • Jesus, because of what he accomplished. He was about teaching us about love.
Effect on Emotions
  • Mindfulness helps me deal with my emotions by questioning how I feel when someone criticizes me. I used to be triggered by criticism a lot because I experienced it frequently while growing up.
  • Now, I remind myself that it's just someone's opinion, and I evaluate if there's any truth to it. Our thoughts turn into emotions, and those emotions can become beliefs if we dwell on them.
  • I don't want negative beliefs, so I stay aware of my emotions and thoughts.
  • I also consider that the person criticizing me might be having a bad day, so I try not to judge them.
  • Being mindful means being aware of my feelings and thoughts and choosing the beliefs I want to hold onto.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Take a moment, sit on a bench, and breathe the fresh air. It can make you feel so much better.
  • For me, nature is essential; I grew up in the mountains, and it's a big part of who we are.
  • I recommend going out there and feeling nature, even touching the grass with your feet.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • Regarding bullying, Janet talked about how being aware and mindful of our words and actions is crucial, especially when we interact with children.
  • Our beliefs can pass down to them, so it's essential to set a positive example.
  • Bullying often happens when someone lacks self-esteem and hasn't learned how to treat others with kindness.
  • While we must protect ourselves from harm, it's also important to have compassion for the bully, as they might have learned hurtful behavior from somewhere else.
Words of Wisdom
  • I would say that success in every area of your life is real and obtainable. But the power is always in our hands. Because we get we've been given choice. That's the one thing we have given choice and free will.
  • And so when you can look at the landscape that way, if you see something that's not working for you, or you're not living the life that you want to live, go out and figure it out, sit down and sit in the feeling of where it's coming from because you'll discover it, and then you can change it.

The Mindfulness of Yard Care24 Jul 202300:09:21

Mindfulness and Yard Care is the topic of today’s episode. Taking care of the yard can have a strong element of mindfulness to it, and that’s exactly why I decided to focus on the mindfulness of yard care for today’s episode. I’m talking particularly about looking after your plants and flowers.

I still spend a lot of time looking after my yard today, and I find it to be quite a mindful experience. It involves planting and watering the flowers and trimming bushes and shrubs.

Safety First

If you’re practicing mindfulness while doing a task like grasscutting, your safety is the most important element to be concerned about. Wear steel-toed boots and long pants to be as safe as possible. Your mind should always be first and foremost on the task at hand. For today’s episode, I will mostly talk about planting and caring for flowers around your property.

Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify 7 Ways Looking After Your Yard Can Be Mindful

1/ Focus on Sounds 2/ Notice the Colors 3/ Be Aware of the Air 4/ Notice Your Breathing 5/ See the Clouds 6/ Say an Affirmation 7/ Enjoy the Appearance

Focus On Sounds
  • Maybe you’re hearing birds, crickets, cattle, or chickens, or maybe you’re in a town or city environment where you’re hearing traffic or children or construction sounds.
  • Whatever you’re hearing, practice becoming aware of the sounds, and then letting them go into a mix of released sound.
Notice The Colors
  • Enjoy the colors of the flowers or bushes you’re working on. Are there vivid reds and yellows or various shades of greens?
  • Allow yourself to see the beauty in all of the colors nature has surrounded you with.
Be Aware of the Air
  • Be one with nature by being aware of the air around you. Are there pleasant aromas and scents in the outdoor air? Do you smell the grass or certain plants?
  • Maybe you’re noticing some earthy smells or some herbs or spicy smells.
  • Do those smells remind you of anything from the past?
  • Smells and aromas can be an extremely powerful link to the past.
  • Allow yourself to go to some past place or experience that may be conjured up by the scent in the air.
Notice Your Breathing
  • Decide to do nose-breathing; in for 7, pause for 2, and out of the mouth for 5.
  • It’s fun to allow yourself to focus on breathing, especially while you’re doing easy and routine tasks you’re very familiar with.
See The Clouds
  • Notice the color, texture, and movement of the clouds as you work away at each of the particular tasks.
  • Look for images in the clouds or maybe there’s a message there? Be open to any messages that exist there, no matter how fleeting.
Say An Affirmation
  • Say an affirmation over and over to yourself as you work on your yard work. Something like, “I am so happy and fortunate in this present moment to be surrounded by nature’s beauty.”
  • I just did an online search and found this one that I really like: My spirit is nourished by spending time in nature.
Enjoy The Appearance
  • Allow yourself to enjoy the look of the flowers, bushes, and hedges you’ve been working on.
  • Notice the overall appearance and the beauty of the different textures and the other elements like fences, flower pots, bird baths, or other features.
  • Maybe you have a trellis with climbing vines or hollyhocks that are taller than people.

Do you feel overly upset over things that don’t concern you, like a news story you’ve heard or something that happened to people you don’t know? Boundaries and mindfulness are related. Mindfulness is partly about being aware, about being content and happy, and satisfied. It’s about feeling in control rather than out of control. • As we grow older, we gain more life experience and realize that we have gone through various emotions in the past. Sometimes, when we are in the midst of strong emotions, it feels like they will never go away.
  • However, Connie explained a powerful technique called the “do nothing meditation,” which she considers one of the most effective tools she discusses in her book.
  • In this meditation, you simply sit quietly for 10 minutes without doing anything specific. You are not thinking, planning, meditating, or praying. Instead, you allow yourself to become a bit bored and just be in the present moment.
  • This practice helps the emotions we are experiencing to gradually fade away. Moreover, it can also bring forth wonderful ideas and insights.
  • Connie emphasized that dealing with emotions effectively comes with practice and the realization that we have successfully survived all of our emotions in the past.
  • As we grow older, we occasionally remember this truth, which helps us navigate and cope with our feelings more confidently.
  Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is something I don't delve into too much, but I attend yoga classes regularly where I receive lots of suggestions about it.
  • Even my little granddaughter, who is being taught by her mom, tells me to take a deep breath when I'm feeling stressed.
  • It's amazing how just a couple of deep breaths can make a difference. I've learned that even two or three deep breaths can change your body chemistry and help you feel calmer.
  • So, taking a moment to breathe deeply can be really helpful in calming down and finding balance.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • Connie recounted her experience of being bullied by an addicted housemate. When under the influence of alcohol, he would say hurtful things, questioning Connie's worth and intelligence. As a sensitive person, these comments deeply affected her, leading her to doubt herself and wonder if she was truly inadequate.
  • However, a pivotal moment occurred when the housemate said something particularly nasty and untrue. In response, Connie found the courage to stand up for herself. She firmly declared that she no longer needed to listen to his words when he was under the influence. This incident became a catalyst for change in her life.
  • Connie came to realize that the hurtful remarks were more a reflection of the housemate's own issues and addiction rather than a true reflection of her value.
  • From that point on, she adopted a resilient mindset, separating herself from the negativity. She understood that hurtful comments had no connection to her true self-worth and identity. This transformative experience allowed Connie to embrace her own strength and rise above the hurtful words of others.
Words of Wisdom
  • Connie shared her insights on the connection between decluttering and experiencing endorphins. She noted that not only do you feel endorphins from physical activities like a 30-minute walk, but also from emotional releases such as crying. These endorphins play a role in improving overall health and well-being.
  • However, Connie emphasized that the key is simply being happy. Decluttering is not always necessary; what truly matters is making the decision to be happy, regardless of the presence or absence of material possessions. In her view, finding happiness is the ultimate goal, and it can be achieved through various means.
  • Ultimately, Connie's message is clear: prioritize happiness in your life. Whether you choose to declutter or not, the important thing is to focus on cultivating happiness and embracing a positive mindset. Discover the rush of decluttering to enhance wellness in your life.

Birds and Mindfulness10 Jul 202300:15:58

Birds and mindfulness is the topic of today's episode. You might remember me telling you about planting various flowers around my house and how having plants around me adds to the mindfulness in my life. Well, back in May, I made a new flower bed just for Black-Eyed Susans. Every time I look out our big window into the backyard, I see the beautiful bright yellow-orange flowers. Well this episode isn’t about flowers, it’s about birds, but they are closely related, at least in my mind.

When I got married, I discovered my new in-laws were avid bird-watchers. When my wife and I would visit my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, we’d be deep in conversation, and suddenly everyone would run to the window to see a specific kind of bird that had appeared at the bird feeder. The conversation would be immediately redirected. This was all new for me.

In the past, my wife’s aunt June would watch and count birds for certain organizations, I think, BirdLife International or Birdcount.org. I was always amazed that she knew about and could identify dozens and probably hundreds of different birds.

  • A growing body of scientific evidence also shows that the joy delivered by birds is real. Research increasingly links exposure to nature—and specifically, exposure to birds—with improved well-being. In December, a new study by the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research connected greater bird biodiversity to increased life-satisfaction for more than 26,000 people in 26 European countries.
  • It turns out the people who live near natural areas with a greater diversity of bird species were simply happier. In fact, the study found that seeing 10 percent more bird species generates satisfaction on par with a comparable increase in income.
Birds Can Do This
  • seeing and hearing birds can improve well-being.
  • Bird exposure is effective for those suffering with depression, or without.
  • Birds can bring longer-lasting psychological, intellectual, and social well-being.
5 Ways Noticing Birds Can Boost Mindfulness.
  • Heightened Awareness: Noticing birds in your surroundings encourages you to be more present and attentive to the environment. It helps you cultivate a sense of mindfulness by focusing your attention on the present moment and the natural world around you.
  • Deepening Observation Skills: Birdwatching requires keen observation skills, such as noticing different colors, patterns, behaviors, and sounds. Engaging in this practice sharpens your ability to observe details and enhances your overall mindfulness.
  • Connection to Nature: Birds are an integral part of the natural ecosystem, and observing them can deepen your connection to nature. By being aware of their presence and interactions, you develop a sense of interconnectedness with the environment, promoting a mindful and appreciative mindset.
  • Cultivating Curiosity: Birdwatching often sparks curiosity and a sense of wonder about the natural world. As you observe different bird species, you may find yourself seeking knowledge, researching their behaviors, habitats, and characteristics. This curiosity fosters an inquisitive and mindful mindset.
  • Engaging the Senses: Birdwatching stimulates multiple senses, such as sight, sound, and sometimes even touch. Paying attention to the melodies, calls, and movements of birds can create a sensory-rich experience that draws you into the present moment and cultivates mindfulness through sensory awareness.
Suggested Resources Words of Wisdom
  • I suggest we allow birds to help guide us into a deeper state of presence, serenity, and connection. Notice the melodies of their songs and the graceful and almost miraculous way they effortlessly fly around above us.
  • Let birds be a constant reminder of the beauty and peace that surrounds us, inviting us to live fully in each moment with mindfulness and appreciation.
  • And remember the black-eyed Susans I planted in the backyard? Just yesterday, I looked out there and saw two yellow finches having a great time drinking nectar from the flowers, flitting around, and looking like they were in heaven. That in itself was a gift of mindfulness.

Thoughts On Breathing
  • People can look into pranayama, the art of breathing, and Hinduism and yoga as traditions. My favorite breathing technique is two breaths of fire.
  • They breathe in and out really quickly through the nostrils, which can put you into a certain state. One of my other favorites is alternate nostril breathing, which involves switching from nostril to nostril. This really bounces out the two hemispheres of the brain.

  • We were inspired to create Kemor, which is myself and my partner, Keda Edwards Pierre. We got together and created this development app about these five-dimensional beings, which we call Mukshas. This name comes from the word moksha, which means liberation. They become meditation guides. We bring people into these realms, and they meditate using binaural beats. We are using AR and XR technologies. AI and brainwave entrainment will come along in the future.

  • Sonya explained that breathing is a fundamental aspect of mindfulness and something we always have access to.

David Weigert is a unique individual who wants to make a positive difference in people's lives using techniques that encourage you to shake, stimulate, and energize. He believes in helping others become more intuitive and less alone. David sees human beings as information gathering systems and aims to assist them in downloading information from the universe. He has a deep understanding of mindfulness and its significance. David's personal journey led him to realize that feeling loved is essential for calming the mind and staying present. Growing up as a refugee with parents suffering from PTSD, he experienced a sense of isolation and loneliness. However, this also redirected him to the understanding that love emanates from the core of our souls. David's spiritual nature guides him, and he has developed a personal relationship with Jesus and the creator of the universe. Through intentional shaking and the knowledge he gained from practices like Qigong and acupuncture, David amplifies his sensory experience and deepens his connection with spirituality. To him, spirituality encompasses everything and is the essence of all aspects of life. David believes that as God's children, we are infinitely loved, and our imperative to love and protect our children comes from the creative process that is ingrained within us.

  • David uses techniques to help with your emotions that encourage you to shake, stimulate, and energize.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • “Well, I've been practicing breathing exercises since I did Silver Mind Control back in 1977. I'm still learning, so I will keep practicing.”
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • When asked about a story to share, David Weigert spoke about how he has never been bullied because of the vibe he puts out. He attributes this to his trust in God and his practice of seeking forgiveness and forgiving others quickly to avoid generating negativity. He mentioned his struggle with road rage while driving and how he took a training to calm himself down by using techniques like deep breathing.
  • However, David's revelation came when he started shaking about nine years ago to relieve his back pain. He noticed that our bodies are made up of trillions of cells, and the shaking increases wave activity within the body, similar to how waves propagate during natural disasters like tsunamis. This increased wave activity brings changes and nutrients to the body and washes out toxins.
  • David also mentioned an example of using waves to prevent freezing in a whale rescue operation. He sees the importance of waves in our bodies and considers himself a “guinea pig” for his own practice. He hopes to study this further in the future.

  • My Therapist, Taffy
Effect on Emotions
  • Shannon Duncan expressed his insight about emotions as follows: “Through my experience with mindfulness and working with my therapist, Taffy, I gained a valuable lesson in pulling myself back and simply observing my emotions. Previously, my emotions had solely defined me, as if whatever I was feeling represented an absolute truth. I hadn't considered that these emotions might arise from deeper insecurities, sadness, or a lack of feeling safe.
  • However, through the practice of mindfulness, self-awareness, and self-honesty, I have been able to expand my inner world. I now understand that I can contain and observe my emotions without identifying myself solely with them. I have come to realize that I am not defined by my emotions alone.”
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Shannon Duncan emphasizes the significance of breathing, which plays a pivotal role in mindfulness. He stresses that the way we breathe is a direct reflection of our internal state. If our breath is shallow and confined to the chest, it indicates a heightened sense of panic or being in a primal, reactive state.
  • To counter this, it is essential to cultivate abdominal breathing, where the breath originates from the belly. This intentional practice helps to calm the body and mind, allowing a sense of stability to emerge.
  • In Shannon's personal experiences, both in psychedelic journeys and overwhelming emotional moments, conscious breathing has served as a lifeline. When faced with intense emotions that could easily lead to panic, Shannon's guide has consistently reminded him to focus on deep belly breaths. This simple act has the power to settle everything, making the overwhelming emotions more bearable and facilitating their release.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • Shannon Duncan shared a poignant story with me that delves into his personal encounter with bullying and its profound connection to the practice of mindfulness. In this moving account, Shannon reveals he once endured the painful experience of being bullied, which left enduring emotional imprints. However, it was through the transformative power of mindfulness that he discovered solace and inner strength. By cultivating a state of present moment awareness, Shannon was able to observe his thoughts and emotions without judgment, allowing him to respond to the bullying with compassion and unwavering resilience. This profound journey illuminated the remarkable capacity of mindfulness in navigating challenging situations, empowering Shannon to transcend the pain and embrace their authentic self. Through the practice of mindfulness, Shannon found the ability to rise above adversity, cultivating a deep sense of self-acceptance and fostering a compassionate perspective. His story serves as a testament to the transformative potential of mindfulness, offering hope and inspiration to others facing similar struggles.

  • Roy acknowledges the power of this process, understanding that emotions are a natural part of life. He notes that emotions serve as a means of communication between our body and subconscious mind, as they lack a verbal language.
  • He highlights an example of experiencing emotions related to a physical threat the previous night. Roy emphasizes the importance of recognizing these emotions without becoming consumed by them. He acknowledges that he is not defined by these emotions but rather is experiencing them. He stresses the significance of accepting their presence, listening to their message, and taking care of oneself accordingly.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Roy Furr acknowledges the significance of conscious breathing but also highlights some challenges associated with it. He finds that when he becomes too aware of his breath or breathes deeply, he experiences a sense of oversaturation with oxygen, which doesn't feel beneficial to him.
  • Instead, Roy prefers practicing mindful breathing, focusing on being present and spending slightly more time exhaling than inhaling. He mentions various breathing techniques he has explored, including box breathing (in for four, hold for four, out for eight) and the Wim Hof method. While he doesn't consider himself an avid practitioner of the Wim Hof method, he recognizes its potential effectiveness.
  • Roy values the ability to self-regulate through the breath, recognizing that inhaling activates and exhaling relaxes the body. By managing the breath, one can influence the nervous system. He highlights the importance of adjusting the length of the exhale and inhale to achieve desired states of relaxation or activation.
  • In summary, Roy Furr emphasizes the benefits of mindful breathing, preferring a balanced approach that suits his own experience and needs. He sees breathing as a means to regulate the body and influence the nervous system, allowing for increased self-awareness and control.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • Roy Furr shares an incident at the local fencing club where he made eye contact with a guy who became confrontational. Despite feeling activated, Roy used his mindfulness practice to remain calm and extract himself from the situation.
  • He recognized that the guy's behavior might have had nothing to do with him and could be attributed to personal issues or trauma.
  • Roy reflects on the importance of understanding others' struggles and not taking their actions personally.
  • He relates this perspective to his conversations with his children, advising them to show kindness while setting boundaries and recognizing that people's behavior often stems from their own challenges.

  • Roy Furr advises that mindfulness is a practice rather than a quest for perfection or attaining enlightened states. He compares it to other practices like weightlifting or strength training.
  • The goal is to develop an automatic response of awareness even in challenging moments.
  • By intentionally practicing awareness, the brain forms connections and patterns, making mindfulness a natural way of being. Ultimately, Roy emphasizes that mindfulness is about consistently practicing mindfulness itself.

By focusing on deep belly breathing and ensuring her brain receives enough oxygen, she finds relief from fear and anxiety.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Proper breathing plays a crucial role in managing emotions, as Kathleen Israel explains. When experiencing anxiety, she noticed that shallow breathing deprived her brain of oxygen, intensifying fear. • Mindfulness has changed how I deal with my emotions. Now I actually sit with them and focus on them. Mindfulness almost minimizes them. It is the same thing I do if I feel a panic attack or heavy anxiety coming on.
  • I found it [mindfulness] almost minimizes the strength or the power that my emotions or anxiety have over me. Dealing differently with my emotions has helped me with the psychological impacts of sports Injury.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • One practice that I got into as I was getting out of those difficult situations is my therapist had me take a cold shower. It's not for the reasons you might think; there's a plethora of benefits of cold showers, but actually it's very uncomfortable. But you still have to be able to practice your breathing during that experience. [Cold showers create a situation where you begin deep breathing].
  • I found it was [deep breathing] a very good way to prepare myself pre-game. Some people get rather anxious prior to games. Personally, I'm a very superstitious person. So before my first start I actually threw up. So then every subsequent start I had to throw up. So a lot of athletes are very much like that. So I would say that gets you in the same type of hostile environment to where you still have to really focus on your breathing, even though it's extremely uncomfortable.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • There are lots of forms of bullying. I work with a very specific kind of torment, whether you want to call it bullying or not. So these injuries, whether it be an Achilles tear, a Tommy John injury or an overhead throwing injury, or ACL injuries, as I said, they're very long recovery periods. (Note: Tommy Johns Surgery is typically used for UCL tears that happened due to overuse rather than a single traumatic event)
  • And for most of that recovery period, they look fine. They're not walking around with a cast. It's internal healing.

He also emphasizes the importance of self-care, self-love, and compassion during the current "great awakening" and chaotic times.

[show-notes-influence]

Effect on Emotions

(00:34:43) - Well, when you have the mindful structure that we mentioned about the map of consciousness, and you're aware of that map of consciousness, right? Then you can navigate your emotions much easier because you are going to get to neutral and then love more quickly because you know where they are. And the scary, like, okay, I'm angry now and let's get to neutral as quickly as possible so I can at least look at the circumstance in a different way. Um, and it's fine to be angry even if we're the most enlightened being in the, the universe. I mean, Christ was still angry at the money changes and everything else that was going on on this planet. You, you still can be angry, but get to neutral and then make a decision.

[show-notes-emotions]

Thoughts on Breathing

(00:35:37) - Regarding breathing, I will mention the neurologist, Andrew Huberman. He was talking about it on a video, and this double breath in with the nose and then out.  with the mouth when you are slightly stressed. He talks about it from a neurological perspective, but, it essentially decreases the stress in whatever situations. You are having a heated conversation with someone, and you want to calm down a little bit. They don't even particularly know you're doing it, or maybe they do notice, but it doesn't really matter. It deregulates your system and makes you calm, and calms the nervous system.

Bullying Story

(00:29:15) - Well, I was thinking about this question cause you put it on the email before and it depends which situation. I'll probably give you two situations. One from my childhood and then one collective one. Uh, so the childhood, my, I think every kid at my school was bullied in, in some sense by just looking back, it seemed like even the big guys, which I was sort of probably a middle rung, had my humor. People kind of liked me quite, uh, most people were like me cuz of my humor and, and, um, my sporting abilities. But there were still a group who were so-called friends who decided to write a book of hate about me and got everyone to sign it, which was my whipping against the wall as most other, some of my other guys were thrown into trash cans and got, and like, you know, had worse dealings than me.

Words of Wisdom

(00:39:54) - Well, as we step deeper into this, I think we're, as collectively going through a great awakening at the moment in, in 2023, and this is a great thing that Bruce is doing, is this a mindfulness podcast that because we, we need to take more self-care, we need to take more self-loving actions to us as we go through this great awakening. As things unfold, the truth unfolds more and more. We have to become more self-loving and, uh, compassionate to our fellow humans. So every moment that we spend taking care of ourselves means that we are overflowing our cup to, uh, fill others. So I think that's, uh, probably the most mindful way I could end this, because there, I think I see more chaos coming on the horizon and, uh, it's gonna be a time to, uh, navigate your ship, uh, to the, the shores of calm waters, um, and calm land, uh, via self-awareness, self-love, self-responsibility, and mindfulness.

Effect on Emotions
  • Anger is my favorite emotion. I tend to lean toward anger first. Mindfulness has made me much more aware that anger can be a great propeller. I feel anger has the most power behind it to create movement.
  • However, anger can also dissolve quickly. I think there has to be a balance between how you handle your anger. So being very aware of my anger getting ahead of me and harming relationships has been very important. Setting good boundaries for healthy relationships can help balance your emotions.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I'm learning more and more about deep breath. I'm currently in the process of writing about my widowhood journey.
  • When my husband died, I couldn't breathe for months. I didn't feel I could get a deep breath. At this point, I appreciate being able to breathe in a deep breath that I can feel inside.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • One of my twins was picking on my daughter.  And he had already stepped on her in the hallway and she had cried to us. A little bit later that night, there was a scuffle again between the boys. And my, my son had hurt the twin. And I was like, What is going on? And he said, Well, he hurt her again.
  • And so I foolishly thought that mine and my husband's relationship was solid enough that we could discuss this, like mature adults. And it all went very poorly. And so I went out to the shop that we have in our backyard.
  • And he was like, I'm gonna do the same thing to him. And I was like, Oh, the heck you are? And so we get into it. And so we both come inside and he takes his son off and I take my son off and I tell my son, you did exactly what I would expect you to do, which is to protect your sister. Protecting Your sister is always important.

  • His Dad.
Effect on Emotions
  • I guess ways to kind of re-evaluate mindfulness or just try meditation or whatever I tend to choose on a daily basis. I think if I didn't have those things, I would be probably all over the place; I get pretty hot-headed.
  • I don't lose my cool very frequently, but if it builds up over time, it's like a pot boiling over. It's good to be more mindful and grateful for the things that I have.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I wish I did it more. That's my thought. I gotta control my breathing, I get anxious about a lot of things. And so I found that closing my eyes and counting 15 to 20 is super helpful. It kind of releases those things that get me bent out of shape.
  • But doing a little bit more (breathing) is probably more beneficial for me. I kind of come in contact with other people's issues on a daily basis, I'm dealing with whether it's coming from a political background or religious background. You see different people and different ethnicities every day, coming to the gym.

Bullying Story
  • I will say that I am semi-bullied. We lived on an Indian reservation for five years. And we were kind of the minority there. So it's very, very few Caucasian people. With that, I guess if I were smarter, a little bit brighter, I was young I was in middle school so it was more of a kind of ticked-off moment.
  • If I would have been able to take that in and write things down that were agitating, or maybe annoying about the situation. I was kind of an overweight, middle school kid and this guy was twice my size.
  • So I think if I would have been in the moment and known about it more, I think yes, it would have been helpful. It probably would have dissolved, but it would have been kind of suppressed a little bit more so wouldn't happen as frequently. And I'm saying it was like bad bullying. It was just more or less, “Hey, you're the outcast. You're not from this area, we're gonna punch you, we're gonna do this sort of thing.”.
  • But I think from those moments I got into more working out. Like that's not going to happen again. I got to be big enough and strong enough to where I can get my mind right. So I don't have to encounter these situations as I get older

  • Mindfulness has helped me deal with my emotions because I can physicalize them. And I love picturing where fear sits and describing it. That is very helpful in removing some of the motivation that it puts through my body.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Breathing is the most important thing when it comes to presenting. And it's not what very technical people want to hear, because it feels very esoteric and not heavy. But the fact is, it's made the biggest difference in me like deep breathing box breathing, fire to big presentations.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • I was bullied a little bit in elementary school. And I think if grown up, Don's brain was back there it becomes so much about the bully, I'm so much more focused on that person. And what do they want?
  • It's hard to just simply step back and look at it from a 10,000-foot view and be like, can I just avoid this situation, this comes into clear focus these days because, at the end of each year, I'll do an evaluation of the year rather than do goals for the next year, or commitments or anything like that.
  • I just look through the prior year, and find the top three negative experiences top three positive experiences. And then I try and put the top three positive experiences on my calendar, like ASAP, make a commitment, and put the deposit down. And then for the neg negative experiences, I just see like, is there a way I can minimize the opportunities even have these experiences?

Effect on Emotions
  • It's been very beneficial to me, I do journaling every day. Being mindful and intentional in what I'm doing helps me stay focused because there's a lot of rejection in my business. So it just keeps me focused on my goals and moving in a positive direction.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I don't do a lot of it. But I have taken Pilates and some yoga classes at times. And I find that they do a lot of breathing in the exercise. And it's like a release and helps relieve a lot of your stress and anxiety. And even when I do walking and movement I think it helps me overcome anxious feelings and be more positive.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • The second book in my series, is Sophie Washington, the Snitch. It's about children being bullied by a new girl at school who's taking their lunch money and shoving them around. And I think mindfulness may have been helpful for the bully herself.

  • If she had been able to do some mindfulness work, that would help with her anger and bad feelings that led her to be unkind to the other kids. So

Effect on Emotions
  • When I was really stressed and overwhelmed, I used to brag about how many years it had been since I cried. And I would say, I don't get sad; nothing upsets me. I kind of acted like I was this steel wall. And I could just handle and do anything. Give me any problem. I can handle it.
  • The way that mindfulness helps me deal with my emotions is by just allowing me to have them. So it's amazing. Now I went for so many years saying, oh my gosh, I never cry all the time now. And I'm kind of proud of that. Because if I feel sad, or if I feel touched by something that just hits me in the heart, that's what I want to do. And if I feel mad, I allow that as well. If I feel joyful, I allow that.
  • So I just allow any feeling that I have, and I teach my kids to do the same, I don't ever want to shame them and say, Don't be angry. Don't be sad. Don't be whatever just be whatever you are.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • Square breathing is my go-to. I teach that to all my clients. I've taught it to my kids. That's just where you breathe in for four, hold for four, breathe out for four, and then hold it at the bottom for four.
  • If you do that four times around, it is magic, what that can do just to calm your nervous system. If I wake up at night and can't fall back to sleep, I can just do that. I've taught my kids to do it. I think it's such a powerful tool. Stop Feeling Overwhelmed
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • I think as a parent, you have to have a lot of mindfulness around bullying, it just seems so prevalent right now. And I just was reading something that after COVID, there's even more bullying because kids have less social skills and less confidence and things like that.
  • I've had experience with both of my kids being bullied at one time or another. And I think as a parent, it's a really fine line. Because what I try to teach them is mindfulness and empathy for the person. We have no idea what's happening at their house so let's try to think the best we can about why they might be doing this. Stop Feeling Overwhelmed

  • The mother of my great friend from high school.
Effect on Emotions
  • I had never heard that emotions are our feedback; their unrealized thoughts are thoughts that have fully been formed. If I see a Tiger in the Jungle, I know that Tiger is gonna eat me. I can be scared. That's that type of emotion.
  • We talk about having a gut feeling that's something to express itself and can't do it in a traditional way.
  • Mindfulness helps me. I've chosen this path to be okay and be aware. Not all of the feelings are good. The whole spectrum is here to teach me something. And I can embrace it. I don't need to suppress any of it. And I need to listen to it more. I need to be aware of it.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I wasn't aware of my breath or wasn't aware of how powerful and automated our breath is and that when I focus on my breath, just that simple thing, it's easy to calm down, and it's easy to become present.
  • So when I'm angry, let me just breathe through this for a minute. And allow us to process and take some time to think versus just reacting. When I'm starting the day, can I just focus on my breath and remind myself to be aware and be here. Even 10 or 20 minutes into that in the morning can change the rest of the day.
  • Breath is such a simple thing to follow. As those of us who practice meditation know, it can be hard to stay focused because thoughts come floating by constantly to interrupt that.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • I've seen some bullying behavior from certain individuals and what medicine has forced me to do is look at that and say what is really happening? Why am I allowing myself to interact with this person? Or how am I interacting with this person? And then what do I need to do to change that interaction? And to do so in a way that is not good, not from a victim's perspective.
  • I appreciate what you're trying to teach me, and I've recreated thinking of an older gentleman who I felt bullied from. My father was an alcoholic, who was an older person who would have these one moment, everything's fine, the next moment be a fit of rage.

  • Boo-ah (That's me. A creation of both me and my ex-wife). His personality had an incredible, calming influence on me. His personality rubbed off on me, and Boo-ah is a deeply kind, generous, and deeply thoughtful, mindful character.
Effect on Emotions
  • Being aware that you can't change something, and learning to accept it reduces massively, frustration for me. So one thing that I got out of my experience in Mauritius, and my depression, was that frustration in my life reduced significantly afterward.
  • Because I could accept that things move at speed, they move out. If I can't change that speed, then I need to accept that speed is something I don't appreciate or don't want in my life, or happening. If I can't change it, I need to accept it. And that reduces stress and reduces frustration. And it's been life-changing.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • The only time I ever focus on my own breathing is when I'm singing, and what I've learned from singing is that I got quite powerful lungs, so I can actually get a lot of air in and sing quite a lot of time without taking another breath.
  • So one of the things I do when I'm singing, I'm playing with double bass, is learn to breathe incredibly deeply, and that may be added to the pleasure of playing the music because I would imagine I'm getting huge hits of oxygen every time I do that.
Suggested Resources Bullying Story
  • Sometimes in my personal life, but in business as well, I feel that I've been bullied by somebody. And it's more along the lines of manipulation. But manipulation is a kind of bullying. And it's psychologically very violent.
  • It seems like normal behavior, and what I also know is it's a normal relationship, but I feel bullied. And if I am mindful of the fact that I don't want to do what they're pushing me to do, and can just say, well, actually, no, this is what I need, this is what I want. I would be much better off.

Effect On Emotions
  • My mom is Hindu, and my father is Muslim. We meditate regularly. Eastern civilization is very spiritually advanced compared to Western civilization, and this is well documented.
  • The whole yoga revolution, for instance, began when a bunch of East Indian practitioners brought their knowledge here.
  • I strongly suggest that people not only take time out of their day but also make an effort to spend time with their breath, meditate, drown out the noise, and learn to be comfortable with their self-talk. Self-talk is a crucial aspect of this practice.
  • There's your foreground and background conversation, and the conversation you're having with yourself is essentially the conversation you're having with the universe.
Thoughts On Breathing
  • Buteyko is a Russian scientist who developed a breathing method. You can find more about it online; it's been really helpful for me.
  • Additionally, there are various frequency breath training techniques involving specific durations for holding, inhaling, and exhaling.
Bullying Story
  • Growing up, my father passed away, leaving my mom to run our restaurant on Bloor and Lansdowne. She was a great cook, but not a businessperson.
  • I spent my early years in Regent Park until age 10, then moved to Jane and Finch. My mom hoped for less racism, but we faced new challenges.
  • In Regent Park, I dealt with rockers and skinheads, and in Jane and Finch, it was a mix of Mexicans, Jamaicans, and other ethnicities. I encountered racism, being called names like “Paki” and “curry eater.”
  • I didn’t engage aggressively; instead, I’d ask, “Why are you doing this?” However, in Jane and Finch, I sometimes had to fight back for my belongings.
  • I believe facing adversity is essential for growth. My kids, aged 15, 17, and 19, have never been in a fight, which I find hard to relate to.
  • When I was younger, making plans involved uncertainty, unlike today's instant communication.
  • My son shows me how his classmates share their locations with him, thinking it’s an achievement.
  • While each generation faces different challenges, I believe that experiencing breakdowns can lead to breakthroughs. Building mental toughness is crucial, and while inclusivity is important, it should not compromise genuine personal growth.

  • The key for me, and what I tried to teach is for people to slow their life down; you're not going to be mindful, you're not going to be conscious.
  • If you're going 100 miles an hour, because your mind is going to be all over the place, you need to slow down first. And then second, be willing to put the time in because mindfulness demands a slower pace and commitment to learning over time.
Thoughts on Breathing
  • I use it as a preparation for meditation. Breathing puts you in the moment because you got to focus on your breathing. So the one thing people don't think about is that they think I gotta go slow. And there you are, there's that slow and my mind has to work on this. Because all of it ties in together.
