58. Leadership Lessons and Career Confidence for Women Over 40, with Tiffany Tate and Mary Tribble14 Nov 202500:35:53

Ever feel like you’ve been doing all the right things at work—but somehow, you’re still not being seen? You’re showing up, doing great work, but the next opportunity just isn’t coming? You’re not imagining it—and you’re not alone.

In this powerful episode of Mind Your Midlife, I sit down with Mary Tribble of the Wake Women Podcast and Tiffany Tate, CEO of Career Maven Consulting, to talk about leadership, visibility, and confidence for midlife women who want to grow in their careers. We explore how to move past the ā€œinvisible ceiling,ā€ why kindness and authenticity matter in leadership, and what it really takes to be seen, heard, and valued in your work life.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

āœ” What the ā€œinvisible ceilingā€ is and how it quietly holds back midlife women at work
Ā āœ” Why being visible—and not just good at your job—is the key to career advancement
Ā āœ” How to lead from where you are, even without a big title
Ā āœ” The truth about kindness in leadership (and why it’s not weakness)
Ā āœ” How to find support and community when leadership feels lonely

šŸŽÆ OMG Moment: You don’t need a fancy title to lead—you just need to start where you are and make your work visible.

57. Real Talk About Your Midlife Body Image07 Nov 202500:23:37

Body image — it’s one of those topics that every midlife woman can relate to, yet few of us talk about honestly. Why does it get so hard to like what we see in the mirror in our 40s and 50s? And what can we do about it?

In this episode, Cheryl gets real about body image in midlife — where our insecurities come from, why they’re so hard to shake, and how to start changing the conversation in your own head.

Spoiler: this isn’t about ā€œfixingā€ your body. It’s about noticing the outdated stories that shape how you see yourself — and learning to replace them with gratitude and truth.

Cheryl shares how early messages, comparison culture, and shifting identities all play a role in how women see themselves at this stage of life. From perimenopause changes to social media filters, she unpacks why midlife can stir up old self-criticism and what it really takes to feel confident again.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How childhood comments and early experiences can shape your body image for decades.
  • Why your brain holds on to old beliefs — and how to begin updating them.
  • The hidden influence of social media and why most of what we see isn’t real life.
  • How midlife transitions — career, relationships, parenting — can change how we feel about our appearance.
  • Why ā€œanti-agingā€ culture is a problem.

OMG Moment
Your body has carried you through 40, 50, or 60 years with strength and resilience. It’s not your body that needs fixing — it’s the way you see yourself. Gratitude and self-compassion are the new beauty secrets.

In this empowering episode of Mind Your Midlife, Cheryl Fischer sits down with Dr. Wendy O’Connor, a Stanford-trained positive psychologist and success coach, to talk about what it truly means to thrive as women over 40. We dig into the difference between success and happiness, how to stop living by everyone else’s ā€œshoulds,ā€ and why giving yourself permission to thrive may be the most important self care decision you make in midlife.

Dr. Wendy brings deep insight into why so many midlife women feel unfulfilled even after achieving all the traditional milestones—and how to finally shift your mindset so you can live with confidence, joy, and meaning.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

OMG Take Five: Are You Focused on What You Think Others Think?28 Jun 202400:04:49

When you are upset - or happy - are you truly feeling that emotion because of your desires and your personal like and dislikes? Or are you upset because you are worried about what you think other people will think?Ā  Are you happy because of what you think other people will think?

Truly feeling your feelings that come from your desires and beliefs and your thoughts about your life is powerful.Ā  But allowing in feelings that you've created because of what you think others say or think about you is allowing them to be in charge of you.Ā  And we never really know what others think anyway, do we?

Let's talk about it.

OMG Take Five: Tapping for Sadness or Anger07 Jun 202400:04:18

Processing emotions is difficult stuff - and it's really important for our mental and physical health.

We know that we shouldn't ignore our feelings or stuff them down so we forget about them, but what can we do otherwise?

Here's where EFT Tapping helps me.Ā  When I'm feeling sad or angry, I do a few rounds of silent tapping.Ā  Tapping uses acupressure points to clear the energy flow in our bodies and that helps us to process and move through emotions.

Make sure to listen to Episode 9 of OMG Teach Me where we talked all about what tapping is and how it can help you - with mood, success, processing feelings, and more.

OMG Take Five: Remove These Words from your Vocabulary24 May 202400:04:44

Our words have power.Ā  They have power when we communicate with other people and they have power because we are also communicating with ourselves.

Ā

If you catch yourself always saying that you can't do something or you're not like this or that, you are reflecting your subconscious beliefs.Ā  Usually these descriptions (about being late or disorganized, for example) can be changed if you want to make the changes.

Ā

Awareness is the first step.Ā  Listen to your common phrases.Ā  Do you criticize yourself in these ways?Ā  Could you say it differently - or maybe not say that part at all?Ā  Think about it.Ā Ā

Ep. 59: Setting Intentions and Breaking Free From Restrictions14 May 202400:27:04

As you start to experience more mindset transformation, a key practice will be setting your intentions.Ā  This could be your intention for the day, for a meeting, for a goal, for your business, for a relationship... so many things.

Setting an intention means deciding first how the experience is going to go.Ā  Decide BEFORE moving forward, and then you create a scenario where your actions will be more aligned with the results you were hoping for.

Intentional living is going to require some self-awareness of subconscious programming that may hold you back.Ā  Let's talk about why it's worth it.

Setting your intentions first is also going to help you move away from a focus on rules and restrictions.Ā  Does what you're doing align with the attention? If so, do it!

Make sure to grab your mini-series and stop self-sabotaging, because this goes right along with creating intentions and moving ahead with them.Ā  www.bit.ly/empoweredselftalkĀ

OMG Take Five: The Wonder Woman Power Pose10 May 202400:04:41

Body language is called a language because we are communicating to other people with the way we hold our bodies and how we take up space.Ā  In one of my favorite Ted Talks, Amy Cuddy says that we are also communicating with ourselves.

Ā

It feels very different to make ourselves small versus flinging our arms wide or standing up tall.Ā  What if you can change the way you are standing or sitting and then hold that position for a few minutes, and then feel completely empowered after doing so?

Ep. 58: Demystifying Meditation - Why It's Vital and How to Dive In07 May 202400:33:21

If you're anything like me, you've heard that meditation is powerful and you've thought about trying it, but you don't really know how to get started.Ā  What is the right way to meditate? Why is meditation so powerful for mindfulness? Is it really a self-care strategy that you should make time for?

Ā

Let's talk about it.

Ā

Angela Smith, Meditation Teacher, joins me on today's episode to explain how meditation is powerful for our brains and our mind-body connection.Ā  She explains this with a metaphor of trains coming and going at a train station - and that picture will help so much to clarify why a few minutes each day to meditate is worth your time.

Ā

Angela walks us through silent meditation, her favorite meditation app, and also a five senses meditation to use while walking (that I think you'll love).

OMG Take Five: Sitting is the New Smoking03 May 202400:05:05

It's so common for us to sit too long at work and to have basically a sedentary lifestyle.Ā  You may workout regularly (I do), but does that mean that you are getting enough movement in your daily life?Ā  It often doesn't.

Ā

Let's talk about the health issues that come from sitting too much at work and during each day: higher risk of heart disease, obesity, stress, and more.

Ā

And then let's talk about what you can do.Ā  You can add movement at lunchtime and every hour.Ā  You can plan activities with friends that involve movement.Ā  You can take the stairs!Ā  It all adds up.

Ā

It's a good idea.

Ā

Let's talk about why that person may have popped into your head, why it's a good idea to follow your gut feeling or instinct, and how to reach out.Ā  This is not about wanting something from them; this is about brightening someone's day like yours would be if this were to happen to you.

46. What If You've Been Funny All Along? Comedy and Humor in Midlife with Lynn Harris29 Aug 202500:39:32

You’ve probably heard that laughter is the best medicine, and science agrees. But did you know that being funny isn’t something you’re either born with or not? My guest today, Lynn Harris, founder of Gold Comedy, is here to show us that everyone can learn to tap into humor—yes, even you.

In this episode, Lynn shares how comedy is not only a tool for entertainment but also for empowerment, especially for women over 40 and 50 navigating midlife changes. We talk about why women are often conditioned to laugh at jokes instead of making them, how comedy builds confidence, and why humor is such a powerful form of self care.

Lynn also gives practical advice for midlife women who might want to try comedy for fun, personal growth, or even as a new career path. Whether you dream of stepping on stage, adding more lightness into your conversations, or simply boosting your self confidence, this conversation will inspire you to see your funny side in a whole new way.

What you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Why midlife is the perfect time to embrace your funny side
  • How comedy builds confidence and connection
  • Practical steps to notice humor in everyday life
  • Why humor is one of the most powerful forms of self care for women in midlife

Ep. 56: You Are Enough (Worthiness, Not Comparison)23 Apr 202400:27:14

"I am enough" is something we say, we remind ourselves of, and we post on social media.Ā  But does this mean that we are just enough... barely... or does this mean that we are worthy and empowered?Ā  I say it matters whether you use this phrase to compare yourself to others (not ideal) or to make a powerful statement that you are exactly who you're meant to be.

Ā

Throughout the episode, I'll share personal anecdotes, insights, and practical tips on how to cultivate a mindset of worthiness and banish feelings of inadequacy. From reframing negative self-talk to embracing imperfection (we're all human), I've included actionable strategies for listeners to incorporate into your daily lives.

Ā

The freedom that comes from embracing who we truly are is liberating. Whether you're struggling with self-doubt or simply looking for inspiration, this episode is guaranteed to uplift your spirits and remind you that you are worthy, just as you are.

Ep. 54: How and Why to Rest Your Brain and Rest Your Body09 Apr 202400:38:36

Rest.Ā  It's a popular topic today, especially in a world where we are often overwhelmed and overstimulated with work, with environmental stimuli, with people (or people-ing as my friend likes to say).

Ā

Cherry Poon-Crowie joins me today to share with us what the seven types of rest are and why they make a powerful difference in our bodies, our emotions, and our mental state.

Ā

We know we need to rest, but what if laying on the couch watching Netflix is not actually the rest our bodies need?Ā

Ā

We may need sensory rest, physical rest, emotional rest, social rest, mental rest, creative rest or spiritual rest.Ā  Walk through these types of rest with us and choose your top 3 that will be powerful in your life.

Ā

And Cherry gives some great advice for helping people who are going through grief or trauma or major life events like a new baby.

Ep. 53: OMG HBD! Lessons Learned From Starting Something New02 Apr 202400:30:05

A year ago, I started a podcast.Ā  I love it.Ā  I'm thrilled to have done it.Ā  And yet, I started without any idea of how it would go and where I would be after a year.

Ā

Every time we start a new business or a new hobby or try a new activity or learn a new concept, we learn lessons that apply to all different parts of life.Ā  This week I'm sharing what I've learned in a year of podcasting, and how those lessons will matter for you.

Ā

Let's talk about:

  • Perspective - there are many different ways to look at things;
  • Accepting compliments - you want to do it well;
  • Social media is not the be all end all;
  • Amazing people doing amazing things can be a valuable part of your life;
  • It's ok to get loud or silly when excited; and
  • They key to success is to START.

OMG Take Five: What if it's the food?29 Mar 202400:04:07

I'm taking inspiration from Nate Bargatze today!Ā  He recently talked about having to pay more attention to what he eats now that he's in his 40s... because what we eat really affects how we feel.

Yes.Ā  That's true.

Let's talk about the ways we might justify how we're feeling instead of realizing that a certain food or drink or habit could have caused it.Ā  The most important thing is understanding how different foods affect your own body - and your energy level and sleep as well.Ā  Then you get to decide.

Ep. 52: Are you REALLY hungry?26 Mar 202400:37:21

There are five types of hunger... and four of them are emotional hunger.

Ā

Jennifer Dent Brown, Health and Life Coach, joins me today to walk through what hunger feels like and how to recognize the type of hunger you are feeling.

Ā

We dive into the idea that no foods are off-limits and you can decide individually what foods give you energy and what foods create sluggishness for you.

Ā

We're talking about weight loss drugs and the pitfalls that may happen when we use only those drugs as a solution and we don't address our emotional eating issues.

Ā

Eating with intention is key.Ā  If you want to eat something, do it! Just know why.

Ep. 51: Find Yourself in the Enneagram19 Mar 202400:59:00

It's week 3 of our three week *know yourself* series!

This week is about one of my favorite ways to understand our personalities, motivations, and fears... and that is the enneagram.Ā  Take a look at the picture below as you listen in today.

Ā

Wendy Montgomery, Life Coach, joins me today to walk through each of the 9 enneagram types.Ā  We're adding special emphasis on the core fears, core motivations, wounding messages, and healing messages for each type - and I believe this is where you'll get some powerful information helping you to recognize yourself and your loved ones.

Ā

The enneagram can inform your decision making, your relationships, and your self image.Ā  If you think you've recognized yourself in one or a few of these types, make sure to reach out to Wendy at www.wendymontgomery.com or on social media at @wendymontcoach on Instagram or Facebook.Ā  Wendy recommends the IEQ9 Enneagram test and can connect you with the information.

Ep. 50: Speak Their Love Language12 Mar 202400:33:17

Robin S sings, "Words are so easy to say... You've got to show me love!"

How do you show love (or appreciation or friendship)?

Often we express our love in the ways that we like to receive love.Ā  It's so much more powerful and meaningful if we express love in the way that the other person best feels and receives it.

And that brings us to Gary Chapman's Five Love Languages:

  • Words of Affirmation
  • Quality Time
  • Receiving Gifts
  • Acts of Service
  • Physical Touch

This week we're talking about what each of these love languages means, how to figure out what your own primary love language is, and how to express yourself to others with these languages.

Ep. 49: You Are A Leader; Let's Find Your Strengths05 Mar 202400:38:47

Leadership - let's talk about it.

Ā

Every single person who has the desire to do so can be a leader.Ā  We lead ourselves, and we can choose to lead others - whether we have a title that says so or not.

Ā

Breanne Sufrin of The Leadership HQ joins me today to talk about leadership.Ā  We'll look at what the key skills are that leaders need (communication, confidence, and the ability to handle conflict).

Ā

We'll walk through the Gallup StrengthsFinder and what your top (and bottom) traits can tell you about yourself.Ā  Any of the strengths can be powerful assets to you as a leader.

Ā

Develop your inner confidence, understand the power of communication, and realize that healthy conflict is a sign that you've created a leadership situation that is open to discussion and communication with your team, and you are well on your way to success.

Ā

This is also week 1 of a three part series on understanding ourselves, so stay tuned for episode 50 on love languages and episode 51 on the enneagram.

Ep. 46: Spilling the Tea on Gluten-Free20 Feb 202400:31:15

Doesn't it feel like everyone either has a strong opinion on gluten or is simply confused about what gluten is and why it's an issue?

Ā

Let's clear up the story on gluten this week!

Ā

I'm walking you through what gluten is, where it comes from, and how it has changed.Ā  We'll talk about celiac disease, gluten allergies and gluten sensitivity.Ā  We'll talk about how you can figure out how gluten affects your body (because we're all different).Ā  I'll share my story of discovering that gluten makes me sleepy, truly!

Ā

The key? Gluten in moderation as part of a whole food-based healthy and balanced way of eating that includes vegetables, protein, healthy fats and healthy carbs might be fine for you.Ā  Or, your body may not handle gluten well at all.

Ā

The best thing you can do is find out.

Ā

Then we'll talk about gluten-free foods and gluten-free alternatives, because they have their place but they aren't necessarily any healthier.

Ā

I hope you walk away from this episode with clarity about the mystery of gluten - and knowing how to find out more for yourself.Ā  Share this with someone who'd also like to understand!

Ep. 45: Growing Through the Hard Things15 Feb 202400:35:35

If only we knew that our paths would be smooth and without any pitfalls or challenges...

OR

What if the pitfalls and challenges are where we find the growth?Ā  What we if we look back and see that the challenge was the way we created new skills or turned in a new direction that turned out to be amazing?

Ā

Jorge Gonzalez, author of Answer the Call, joins me on this episode to talk about how we make it through the challenging times and what fulfillment is all about.Ā  I'd love for you to take away from this discussion that it is powerful to listen to your intuition / your faith / your gut, and it does matter who we spend time around and how we lift each other up, and even more importantly, the major growth that happens in life is almost always outside our comfort zones.

44. How Midlife Women Can Recognize Domestic Abuse, Build Confidence, and Help Other Women, with Tiffiny Newton19 Aug 202500:40:37

Whether or not you've personally dealt with abuse, you most likely know someone who has. In this powerful episode of Mind Your Midlife, I talk with domestic abuse survivor and advocate Tiffiny Newton about how women over 40 and 50 can recognize the signs of abuse, protect their self confidence, and reclaim their joy.

Tiffiny shares her personal journey of leaving an abusive relationship and transforming that pain into purpose—helping women spot red flags, set boundaries, and understand that real self care starts with safety. This conversation is heavy, but it’s one every midlife woman needs to hear.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

āœ” Why abuse isn’t just physical—and how emotional and psychological abuse can quietly strip away your self confidence
Ā āœ” The red flags midlife women should watch for in dating and long-term relationships
Ā āœ” How to support a friend or family member you suspect is experiencing abuse
Ā āœ” Why silence and shame keep women stuck—and how awareness becomes your superpower
Ā āœ” The difference between healthy disagreements and dangerous control

šŸŽÆ OMG Moment: Abuse thrives in silence. If you’re questioning whether something in your relationship is abuse, that’s the answer—trust your gut.

Take Action

Pause and check in with yourself. Are disagreements in your relationship rooted in respect and safety—or do they make you feel fear, shame, or powerlessness? If something feels off, listen to your instincts.Ā

And if you suspect someone you love is struggling, the simplest wordsā€”ā€œI’m here if you need to talkā€ā€”can open the door.

Find Tiffiny's book, Behind The Smile, at cherylpfischer.com/read.

Join Cheryl and Tiffiny in Patreon (https://patreon.com/mindyourmidlife) for tips on how to talk with younger women and teens about abuse, personal strength, and protecting themselves.

Why This Episode Matters

Midlife women deserve joy, fulfillment, and healthy love. But too often, fear and silence keep abuse hidden. By talking about this openly, we make it safer for women to recognize abuse, break free, and build a stronger mindset toward confidence and healing.

šŸŽ§ Hit follow now and don’t miss next week’s episode where I’ll share a simple, free self care tool you can use during stressful times—a practice called tapping.

Ep 44: Burnout Is Real - Catch It Early13 Feb 202400:44:13

We hear about burnout related to famous people who had to leave the spotlight for a period of time.Ā  I know I used to think that burnout wasn't something that would affect "regular" people.Ā  And then I hit burnout in my teaching job...

Ā

Robyn Krugman, therapist and coach, joins me today to talk us through symptoms of burnout and what we can do to soothe ourselves and hopefully start to create some improvement before we really hit a full burn-it-to-the-ground situation.

Ā

You'll want to watch for irritability, feeling disconnected or apathetic, not feeling like yourself, brain fog - and then you'll want to ask for help.Ā  We're talking through tips for relaxation, treating ourselves like humans instead of productivity machines, and even JOMO (the joy of missing out).

Ep. 43: Lead by Speaking Up08 Feb 202400:32:15

It's bonus month... New episodes 2x/week throughout February!

Ā

Urmi Hossain, CFA, speaker and mentor for women in finance, joins me on this episode to talk about what it takes to be a woman in leadership.

Ā

What do we as women want in our professional lives? We want to feel valued in our jobs and we want to be recognized for our contributions.

Ā

How can we get there? We can speak up (especially since that creates an example for others too!), we can grow our confidence, we can step outside our comfort zones, and we can learn some new skills that create value in our lives.

Ā

Above all, remember that your job is not your identity and make sure to follow your passions.Ā  I know you'll leave this episode with inspiring lessons for your job, your business, and your mindset.

Ep. 42: FOMO - What if they're talking about me?06 Feb 202400:22:32

Have you ever felt like you are left out of the cool group?Ā  Wondered if that group in the other room was talking and laughing about you?Ā  Felt silly because you thought so?

Ā

Let's talk about what to do.Ā  First of all, most people are focused on ourselves, not on anyone else.Ā  And even if they are talking about you, it's none of your business unless they want to talk directly to you about it.

Ā

I'm sharing two concepts that help me through situations when I feel like the dorky kid again who worried that she didn't fit in.Ā  Assume the positive, build up your mindset and self-confidence, and let's give them something to talk about! ;)
