29. New Stages of Matrescence, Informed Healthcare Decisions, and Other Things I've Been Up To24 Sep 202400:47:30

I meant to take a 3 month podcast break and it's turned into a full year. It's been a year. This is a catch-up episode because I feel like it would be weird to just jump back in after such a prolonged break. I talk about my endometriosis excision surgeries and iron infusions and other controversial things in the crunchy world that I zero percent regret.

**Trigger warning: This episode does briefly mention some sensitive subjects like postpartum hemorrhage, blood loss, anesthesia, and pediatric hospitalization. Like I said, it's been a year. But you might want to hold off on listening if the above subjects are particularly activating for you.**

28. How to Think Critically About Women's Health in the News26 Mar 202400:48:17

In this bonus episode, my friend Stephanie Risinger (@stephanie.hopefulandwhole) and I talk about our personal experiences with the birth control pill and our professional experiences in working with women who are not always seen, heard, and respected in medical settings. In short, medical gaslighting is very common in the perinatal settings in which we see clients. So when the Washington Post came out with an article titled, Women are getting off birth control amid misinformation explosion, I knew we had to talk about it.

In holistic spaces, there's a lot of backlash against this article, referencing medical gaslighting but also calling out media at large and its glaring biases.

We discuss the article with an eye on critical thinking and curiosity more so than making a definitive statement or writing a thesis on birth control or feminism. As I re-listened to our conversation, I realized these are the kinds of discussions we need to be having as the media prepares to tell women how to feel and think and act about their bodies for the next 8 months of this election cycle.

So while I will be back to my postpartum and motherhood content soon, I think this discussion is an important one to have in the larger conversation about women's health and where the authority really lies (hint: the authority lies with you, not your doctor and not with social media and not with poorly-researched "news" articles).

18. Tapping out of Rigidity and into Resilient Motherhood with Theresa Piela30 Apr 202301:31:11

EFT tapping has been a really helpful resource for me for everything from postpartum panic and birth trauma to mom overwhelm and food allergy fears. In this episode, Theresa (@livingrootswellness) and I talk about what this is and why it helps.

We got on to talk a lot about practicing joy and resilience and why it's a gift to have life circumstances that force us to practice these skills again and again. Throughout the conversation, we also cover re-parenting, co-regulating, and creating safety in the body.

17. Progesterone and Postpartum Mental Health with Hormone Geniuses Jamie and Teresa23 Apr 202301:09:25

After sharing my birth stories (episode 14) and a lot of info on infant food allergies (episodes 15 and 16), it seems fitting to talk about postpartum mental health again.

In this interview, I have the hosts of the Hormone Genius podcast (@thehormonegenius) here to talk with us about progesterone and postpartum mental health. Teresa is a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner at Sancta Familia and Jamie is a FertilityCare Practitioner and hormone coach through the Fiat Institute.

In this interview, we talk about hormones (of course), mental health, and the NaPro progesterone protocol for postpartum women.

15. Breastfeeding a Baby with Food Allergies with Dr. Trill from Free to Feed13 Apr 202301:38:08
Molecular biologist Dr. Trill (@free.to.feed) and I talk about food allergy facts and misinformation. In fact, we talked for so long that I broke the interview into two episodes. This is part one, and it covers the different types of food allergies, how babies can still react to allergens when exposed via breastmilk, how to eliminate potential triggers, why the top 12 infant allergens are different than the top adult allergens, and how allergies differ from intolerances. 14. The One With All the Birth Stories23 Mar 202301:27:50

I have referenced my own birth stories in several episodes, but I haven't shared them in their entirety on this podcast... until now. I knew I probably needed to share more, to put my experiences in perspective when I share little tidbits here and there, but I was dreading a long monologue. Then I realized, well, I've walked through these stories before with a really fantastic interviewer and unless you found me through @happyhomebirthpodcast you may not have heard this story before. This exact interview was originally published as Happy Homebirth Podcast Episode 193: Preparing for Birth When Plans Change Last Minute. If you like encouraging birth stories and deep conversations about things that matter in the birth world, I cannot recommend Katelyn's podcast enough, by the way. EVEN IF you have zero desire to have a homebirth (spoiler alert: none of mine ended up being home births, although the third was supposed to be until plans changed at 38 weeks). Notes on this interview:

These are really three happy stories. However, my third birth experience ends with some unexpected events after delivery that registered as trauma in my body.  I give a trigger warning before going into it, so if you're in a sensitive place, go ahead and skip forward 5 minutes or so when you hear that warning. Katelyn says, "Despite my great love and desire for mothers to know about homebirth as an option, that does NOT automatically mean that home is the best option for everyone. The best option for a mother is for her to give birth where she feels safest and most comfortable. We are asking our bodies to open up and be fully vulnerable. If they are most comfortable doing that in a hospital, there is absolutely no shame in that."

I go into my People Pleaser Tendency here. Katelyn says, "This is very common in pregnancy and birth, and it's something we need to be aware of so that we can prepare ourselves beforehand. Strengthening our boundaries during pregnancy can be incredibly useful." Finally, birth can be beautiful and still have complications. There can still be traumas after something amazing and lovely, and we can eventually find ways to integrate these experiences and not get stuck in those traumatic moments.

13. Made for the Work of Motherhood with doula and author Mary Haseltine06 Mar 202300:55:51

In this interview, Mary Haseltine (@madeforthisbirth) and I talk about what God ACTUALLY told Adam and Eve in the garden, what we can expect from birth and motherhood, when we need to surrender control in this process, and how this surrender is something that will come up again and again in our motherhood journey, as Mary is learning as she launches her oldest child off to college.

12. What to Expect When You Were Expecting to Sleep Like a Baby with Taylor Kulik19 Feb 202301:27:22
  • In this interview, Taylor (@taylorkulik) and I talk about what's normal in regards to infant sleep in the first year and what's not normal. We cover the Safe Sleep 7 and what is and is not recommended in terms of safe sleep environments. If you're dealing with sleep red flags, we talk about what to consider next including things like oral ties, airway issues, breastfeeding problems, and food sensitivities as well as where to look for next steps. Most importantly, we talk about how to function and care for yourself during a season of very little sleep.

  • Taylor's website with info on consults and courses can be found HERE.

  • Her podcast episode that goes in-depth on sleep red flags is HERE.

  • Taylor did a sleep module within the postpartum segment of my breastfeeding course, Nourished Beginnings. You can find that course HERE. (code PODCAST15 will get you 15% off!)

  • Use THIS LINK + code "newtoearthley" for 10% the Goodnight (magnesium) Lotion we talk about at one point.

  • Dr. Jame's McKenna's books, research, and website are a wealth of sleep information for moms of young children. You can find his safe co-sleeping guidelines HERE.

  • This BBC article from 2022 summarizes a lot of what we do know about infant sleep (which isn't as much as we like to think). I found this article to be extremely interesting since it analyzed global trends and reported sleep norms. You can read it for yourself HERE.

  • THIS podcast interview with Abigail Dodds on the Journeywomen podcast was so encouraging to me in one of my seasons of sleep deprivation.

  • Finally, THESE WORDS from Charles Spurgeon hit me when my first was just 2 months old and, like I mention in the episode, I was just so discouraged that he wasn't sleeping the way I'd expected him to.

10. Tummy Time, Co-Regulation, and Retained Reflexes with Physical Therapist Stephanie Novacek29 Jan 202301:18:12
  • In this episode, physical therapist Stephanie Novacek (@wellbellybabe) and I talk about infant assessment skills, the vagus nerve, and the importance of co-regulation between mom and baby. She walks us through what a wave of therapeutic tummy time looks like and explains what retained reflexes are and how rhythmic movement can help us integrate them. Finally, she and I talk about how moms often want to be seen and heard, too, when they're struggling to help baby resolve something. We both agree that taking care of the mother is taking care of the baby, and it's important for the mother to mother herself as well.
  • Toward the end of the episode, Stephanie mentions an upcoming virtual workshop for reflex integration and that is coming up on February 8, 2023 at 8pm CST. You can sign up HERE and it's free!
  • If your infant or older child would benefit from Stephanie's Physical Therapy work via Well Bellies and Babies, you can find her info HERE.

In this episode, perinatal counselor Stephanie Risinger (@hopefulandwhole) and I go through a broad overview of the various ways in which you may not feel like yourself during pregnancy and postpartum. 24. Responding with Grace when Motherhood Challenges Us with Peyton Berg15 Jul 202301:39:07

Pediatric nurse, functional health coach, and mom of 3 Peyton Berg (@pey_lovinghealthllc) and I initially planned to talk about "balancing" work and motherhood but we ended up covering a lot of ground in this conversation:

  • how hard means different things to different people and comparison in motherhood isn't helpful
  • what it looks like to walk through a season of confusion when you thought you were doing the right thing and you didn't get the outcome you expected
  • discernment about alternative healing modalities
  • navigating the healthy living space as Christians, and the difference between spiritual and emotional health
  • and asking for and accepting help

23. Does my Baby Really Need a Probiotic? with Tiny Health founder Cheryl Sew Hoy01 Jul 202301:19:47

Cheryl Sew Hoy (@tiny.health) and I dive RIGHT into why mother's microbiome affects baby's gut health, why not all probiotics are helpful, how to improve baby's gut health (and yours), why any amount of breastmilk benefits baby's microbiome, and how the microbiome changes as our babies grow. And, of course, we address the question of whether or not babies need probiotics.

22. Dinnertime Decisions and Doing it All with bestselling cookbook author Cassy Joy Garcia10 Jun 202301:15:53

This conversation with Cassy Joy Garcia (@fedandfit) was so encouraging to me. Even a professional cookbook author finds it difficult to make dinner with little kids around! In this interview, we talk about shifting priorities, how to make work time work with young children, asking for help, and our favorite dinner go-tos. Of course, we also talk about Cassy's second and third cookbooks and why they're perfect for this exact season of life that we are both in.

She answers so many listener questions and also shares hope for addressing your symptoms via the program she and her colleague, Jenn, have developed. Their program, Tighten Your Tinkler, is offered virtually and is backed by three years of academic research.

31. Shifting out of the Victim Mindset in Motherhood with Kristin Hauser12 Dec 202400:53:33

This interview is the perfect way to launch into season 3 of the podcast and it transitions us gently into more of what I'm learning in my own life and lactation practice: at the end of the day, we get to choose how we respond to what life throws at us and how we show up for ourselves and our families. I can't wait for you to hear what Kristin has to say about the victim archetype and how to recognize ourselves in it and be gentle with ourselves moving out of it.

33. Motherhood Gains and Drains through the MyoWild®️ Lens with Michale Chatham and Kori Meloy12 Feb 202501:36:45

Kori (@korimeloy) and Michale (@michalechatham) join me in this episode to discuss gains and drains in the MyoWild®️ Framework. As we dive deep into these concepts, we explore how they pertain to everything from blame versus responsibility, belief systems, simplicity, resourcing, work, and family ecology.

32. How to Find Breastfeeding Help That's Helpful06 Jan 202500:52:11

Have you ever gotten bad breastfeeding advice? Or thought you were seeing a lactation professional but they had no idea how to help you and just told you "latch looks good"? Or maybe you saw THE lactation consultant in your area and you just didn't jive with them at all. What's a mother to do?

In this episode, we discuss what all the lactation credential letters mean, and what different credentials are most helpful for. But more importantly, we discuss 7 questions to ask YOURSELF before looking for a provider and then 10 things to know about a potential provider to see if they're a good fit FOR YOU.

I hope this episode puts the power back in your hands. It's not about finding the world's best lactation consultant as much as it's about finding one who is a good fit for you and who will come alongside you as you learn and grow. Lactation care is collaborative care and it's not about "rescuing" you from your experience. If you let it, your breastfeeding journey will inform and empower your transition from maiden to mother, even if the road is rocky (maybe especially if the road is rocky).

34. Mirroring & Motherhood with Margaret Barry18 Feb 202501:17:38

This conversation with Margaret (@_musclesandmotherhood) was so fun. She helps moms balance their minerals, grow their muscles, and treat their fascia well. We both learned about mirroring from Michale Chatham and in this interview, we talk about how we see mirroring in our own motherhood, in our work with mothers, and in the Bible. Margaret's words will leave you encouraged, inspired, and energized. I loved her reminder that the best time to plant a fruit tree was twenty years ago, but the next best time is now.

We discuss how to talk with your other kids about loss, how different family members may cope differently, and how grief is a process, not a one-time thing. The conversation is with, for, and about mothers, but birthworkers and loved ones will learn so much by tuning in as well!

42. Life and Lactation After Pregnancy Loss12 May 202501:34:09

Trigger Warning: This conversation was facilitated with the pregnancy and infant loss mother in mind.

Katie (@griefgardenne), Abby (@omahachildbirtheducation), and I briefly share our loss stories spanning first, second, and third trimester losses. But there are no vivid descriptions or scary details shared. The unifying factor is loss itself, and this is a safe place to listen, cry, and feel seen and understood.

However, I think anyone who loves a person who has lost a baby should also listen to this, as should birth workers and pediatric care providers. How we navigate loss with families needs to improve, and what Katie and Abby share from a personal and professional standpoint is so so helpful.

41. Let’s Talk About Postpartum Weight Loss05 May 202501:22:13

“Can I lose weight without losing my milk supply?”

Megan Brister (@postpartum.weightloss.rd) and I talk about this delicate and nuanced subject in today's episode.

Does everyone need to intentionally lose weight postpartum? No.

Do we need to learn to have grace and patience with our softer bodies as we soften into our new roles? Yes.

Do we sometimes mistakenly conflate being at our old weight with feeling like "ourselves" again? Yes.

But also, sometimes, after the initial postpartum recovery phase, weight loss is desired. And you deserve a real answer to the real questions about how to do it wisely, safely, and realistically.

39. A Philosophy of Education and the First Five Years of Homeschooling22 Apr 202500:47:58

No, this isn’t turning into a homeschool podcast. But I got enough questions about our homeschool journey that I decided to put our experience thus far into a podcast episode-- fitting as we wrap up our fifth year of formal homeschooling.

Her new book, It's Time to Talk to Your Kids About Porn, is hopeful, encouraging, and so practical. In this interview, Greta and I talk about some of these hard subjects, as well as the hope we have as parents for providing a louder and more loving voice in our childrens' lives.
