S3 Ep 128: It's like the movie Elf plus the movie Leprechaun in the hood. Except, way shittier and nothing like either of those movies.

patreon.com/midnightmovietheatre

linktr.ee/midnightmovietheatre

Elf in the Hood is a Christmas-set horror film about a struggling couple, Malik and Jada, who are deep in debt to a dangerous drug dealer. In a desperate attempt to make quick cash, they come across a mysterious elf-shaped voodoo doll they think could be valuable. But when they try to sell it, they accidentally awaken a vengeful supernatural force. What was supposed to be a payday turns into a terrifying Christmas Eve survival nightmare as the malevolent entity hunts them through the night.

S3 Ep127: I forgot to mention that this barely counts as a Christmas movie. I feel like I got tricked. Also, the other thing that makes this movie worse than the last house on the left is that the revenge part of it is very short and not really satisfying in the way that you want it to be. Because it's a movie, you're kind of expecting some sort of bizarre justice. But, that's not really the case here. Anyway, click my links below.

Late Night Trains (1975), also known as Night Train Murders, is a grim Italian exploitation thriller directed by Aldo Lado.

The film follows two teenage girls, Lisa and Margaret, who are traveling by train from Germany to Italy for Christmas. During the overnight journey, they encounter a group of violent, unstable criminals who befriend them and gradually reveal their true nature. What begins as an uneasy ride turns into a prolonged ordeal of psychological cruelty and brutal violence, much of it taking place inside the confined space of the train.

After the criminals leave the train, the film shifts focus to Lisa’s parents, who unknowingly give shelter to the perpetrators. When the truth comes out, the story transforms from a survival nightmare into a cold, methodical revenge tale, with the parents exacting punishment in a detached, almost procedural way.

Stylistically, Late Night Trains is known for its bleak tone, disturbing realism, and social commentary beneath the exploitation surface. It reflects 1970s European anxieties about youth alienation, random violence, and the fragility of civility. Often compared to Last House on the Left and A Clockwork Orange, the film is controversial, brutal, and intentionally uncomfortable—designed less to entertain than to unsettle.

S3 Ep126: I wonder why the elf puppet was so stinky... I hope someone wasn't doing something they weren't supposed to be doing to the elf puppet on set. Anyway, this movie is way better than it has any right to be. Sign up for my Patreon for bonus episodes and to help me buy a bc rich.

Elves (1989) is a low-budget Christmas-horror exploitation film that follows Kirsten, a teenager who accidentally awakens an ancient Nazi-created elf during an anti-Christmas ritual gone wrong. The creature is part of a bizarre Nazi plot to breed a “master race” by forcing Kirsten—revealed to be the product of a twisted eugenics experiment—to mate with the elf.

A down-on-his-luck ex-cop turned mall Santa, Mike McGavin, teams up with her to stop the creature and the group of surviving Nazis trying to complete the plan. The movie mixes occult horror, holiday camp, and outlandish conspiracy elements, ultimately delivering a chaotic, grimy, and surprisingly mean-spirited Christmas shocker.

S3 Ep 125: It's time for our Christmas episodes! We're starting off at a low point with "Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out!" This movie is so dull and so poorly written. It comes nowhere near, "So bad, it's good," territory. It is a chore to get through. Anyway... I hope you enjoy the episode. I did just find out that this movie was released directly to video and or television.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 3 picks up after the events of part 2, bringing back the franchise’s Santa-suited killer Ricky Caldwell—now comatose, badly injured, and sporting a clear dome brain apparatus that looks like a repurposed fishbowl glued to his skull. A doctor is trying to study Ricky using a young blind clairvoyant named Laura Anderson, hoping her ESP ability will connect to his dormant mind.

Of course… it does.

During a dream experiment, Laura unintentionally awakens Ricky, who bolts from the hospital, murders anyone in his way, and heads toward the place Laura is spending Christmas: her grandmother’s house. The second half of the film plays out like a road-trip slasher, as Laura, her brother, and his girlfriend find themselves stalked in a remote rural home on Christmas Eve.

The climax pits Laura—who uses her second sight instead of her literal sight—against Ricky in a tense, slow-burn showdown. Police eventually intervene, and Ricky is seemingly “killed”… again.

In 1995 Dean Koontz released a horror/thriller novel known as, "Intensity." In 1997 this story was adapted into a made for TV movie. What he didn't know is that his work was going to be adapted again in 2003 by French film-maker Alexandre Aja. After rewatching High Tension and finishing Koontz's book, I was shocked. The Prowler (1981), also known as Rosemary’s Killer, is a slasher film directed by Joseph Zito. The story begins with a World War II soldier who is spurned by his girlfriend and murders her at a graduation dance in 1945. Decades later, a masked killer dressed in military fatigues and armed with a pitchfork returns when the town revives its graduation dance after years of being canceled. As the night unfolds, students are stalked and gruesomely murdered, leaving a young deputy and his girlfriend to uncover the truth behind the killings and the identity of the vengeful prowler.

S3 Ep 111: Very hard to find and underrated slasher/hicksploitation flick from the 80s.

Just Before Dawn (1981) is a backwoods slasher film directed by Jeff Lieberman. The story follows a group of friends who venture deep into the Oregon wilderness to explore land one of them has inherited. Their carefree trip turns grim when they realize they’re being stalked by a pair of murderous, inbred twins who know the forest inside and out. With its slow-burn tension, eerie atmosphere, and shocking bursts of violence, the film blends survival horror with psychological dread, culminating in a brutal fight for survival.

High Tension (2003), also known as Haute Tension, is a French slasher-thriller about two college friends, Marie and Alex, who head to Alex’s family’s secluded farmhouse for a quiet weekend—only to have their night shattered by a brutal, sadistic killer. As the bodies pile up, Marie fights to survive and protect Alex, leading to a shocking twist that completely redefines everything the audience has seen. It’s known for its relentless violence, intense suspense, and controversial ending.

S3 Ep 109: The nostalgia this movie brings is hard to ignore. All that talk of OTP HJ's has me thinking of all those late night walks across town after making an absolute mess in my jnco's. All the scud hardens up and crusts up your pubies... Oh, boy.

Scream (1996) is a genre-redefining slasher film directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson. The movie follows high school student Sidney Prescott, who becomes the target of a mysterious killer known as Ghostface. As the masked murderer stalks and kills local teens, the town of Woodsboro is thrown into panic.

Blending self-aware humor with brutal suspense, Scream revitalized the horror genre by cleverly deconstructing slasher tropes—its characters openly reference horror movie rules while trying to survive one themselves. With a mix of satire, mystery, and genuine scares, Scream became a massive hit and launched a long-running franchise.

Starring: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore.

S3 Ep108: One of the differences between the Manga and the movie is that, in the Manga, Ricky has a pentagram on his hand. I think this might have something to do with why he is so powerful. I meant to talk about some of the differences between the two a little more, but they didn't seem to be anything too glaringly different. At least, from what I read.

"Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky" (1991) is an ultra-violent Hong Kong martial arts splatter film set in a dystopian future where prisons are privatized. The story follows Ricky Ho, a mysteriously strong martial artist with superhuman abilities, who is sent to a brutal prison after avenging his girlfriend’s death. Inside, he takes on a corrupt warden and sadistic inmates, using his bare hands (often literally) to dish out justice.

The film is infamous for its over-the-top gore, absurd fight scenes, and cult status, making it a favorite among fans of wild, exploitation-style cinema. It's based on a Japanese manga and blends martial arts action with outrageous comic book violence.

The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) is a cult fantasy adventure film directed by Albert Pyun.

The story follows Talon, a swashbuckling mercenary with a mysterious past and a unique triple-bladed sword. Years earlier, the evil sorcerer Xusia helped the ruthless tyrant King Cromwell overthrow the peaceful kingdom of Ehdan, killing its royal family—except for young Talon, who escaped. Years later, Talon returns as a hardened warrior to lead a rebellion against Cromwell and reclaim his birthright.

Along the way, Talon allies with rebels, rescues a kidnapped princess, battles Cromwell’s armies, and faces off against both the treacherous king and the resurrected sorcerer. Full of swordplay, magic, and over-the-top action, the film blends dark fantasy with pulp adventure, earning a loyal following despite its low-budget roots.

S3 Ep106: I still can't remember what movie played with Double Team, when I saw it at the drive-inn. There are so many good action movies that came out in 1997... the possibilities are endless. Face Off, Con-Air, Spawn, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Batman and Robin, Anaconda, Men In Black... dude, the hits just keep coming. What a great year to go to the movies.

Double Team (1997) is an action movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dennis Rodman, and Mickey Rourke. The film follows counter-terrorist agent Jack Quinn (Van Damme), who is forced out of retirement to capture his old nemesis, Stavros (Rourke). When the mission goes wrong, Quinn is sent to a covert penal colony known as “The Colony,” where disavowed agents are kept.

With the help of eccentric arms dealer Yaz (Rodman), Quinn escapes and sets out to stop Stavros, who has kidnapped his pregnant wife. The movie blends high-octane action with over-the-top stunts and a stylized '90s aesthetic, known more for its camp and odd pairing of stars than critical acclaim.

S3 Ep 105: I should have mentioned how cool the costume designs are in this movie... but i forgot about all of that. The ripper, especially. The kind of messed up face with the yellow rain slicker is iconic.

Last Action Hero (1993) is a meta-action comedy film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The story follows Danny Madigan, a young movie fan who is magically transported into the fictional world of his favorite action hero, Jack Slater. Blending satire and action, the film playfully critiques Hollywood tropes while delivering explosive entertainment.

Ms. 45 (1981), directed by Abel Ferrara, is a gritty exploitation thriller set in New York City. It follows Thana, a mute garment worker who is brutally assaulted twice in one day. Traumatized and pushed past her breaking point, she snaps and begins a killing spree, targeting predatory men across the city. Armed with a .45 caliber pistol, she transforms into a silent vigilante, descending into a dark spiral of violence and retribution.
