Trading In Midlife Shame and Guilt for Emotional Freedom14 Aug 202400:29:24

We've heard for years from Brene Brown, "We desperately don't want to talk about shame, and we're not willing to talk about it. Yet, the only way to resolve shame is to talk about it." So we are.
Join us for this truthful, maybe gut-wrenching talk about shame and guilt and midlife, as Cam and Amelia guide you through these problematic emotions. But remember, these should be emotions, instead of getting stuck as a mood.

00:00 Inquiring about the purpose of guilt and shame.
05:17 Creating unnecessary boundaries based on false perceptions.
09:10 Caring for aging parents while setting boundaries.
13:16 Differentiate between shame and guilt for lasting change.
15:15 Labels are like masks, connecting but not defining.
19:48 Honesty, vulnerability, and accepting inevitable relationship conflicts.
21:26 Seeking authenticity, empathy, and grace with others.

27:30 Overcoming fear leads to confidence and resilience.

In this episode, you'll hear:

  • Authenticity Through Alignment: Assess your actions and values by using your calendar, checkbook, or credit card statement as concrete data points for self-accounting. Aligning actions with values can lead to greater authenticity and self-awareness.
  • Liberating From Labels: Move away from shame as a tool for change and from labeling. Shedding negative self-identifications can lead to emotional freedom and deeper connections with others.
  • Vulnerability Breeds Connection: Embrace vulnerability as a path to love, belonging, joy, and innovation. Being honest with oneself and opening up to trusted others can lead to deeper connections and personal growth.

Is this Sabotaging Your Health? Sugar & the "Bliss Point" of Food: 23 Nov 202200:29:00

What is the "Bliss Point"? It sounds awesome, doesn't it? How can something described as blissful be so sinister?

You will be shocked to know that food manufacturers have spent millions of dollars to discover the exact proportions of sugar, fat and salt to hook you like a big fish. The bliss point is the exact point at which you eat one bite and then a million more. Gone are the days of food that is satisfying and wholesome. Welcome to the days of manipulation, obesity and BIG money.

It is sad that the American food system has come to this. If it comes in a package, you  are assured to find an ingredient ending in -ose, which is a synonym for SUGAR. It's hidden in everything as: dextrose, maltose, fructose, glucose, malt syrup and corn syrup. You MUST read labels.

This episode isn't all negativity. In addition to giving you the "skinny" on sugar, we also give you tips on how to overcome this addiction. That's right; I said addiction. This isn't about willpower. It's about overcoming the Bliss Point that has been engineered to make you crave MORE.

Join us for this enlightening and EMPOWERING episode!

Seed Oils & Your Health09 Nov 202200:26:23

Hey Midlife Mommas! We hope you are doing well and thriving.

This episode of the Midlife Mommas podcast talks about seed oils and the nasty little secrets of the processed food industry. These oils, such as sunflower, safflower, canola, soybean, and grapeseed, are cheap and plentiful and carry a host of health concerns. We challenge you to read product labels. The amount of products that contain this inflammatory ingredient is shocking.
We take a deep dive into the health concerns that these oils introduce; we give you tips on how to avoid them, and talk about how to "get yourself back on-track" when you've had a period of poor eating. But let's be honest...and real. We are NOT saying that avoiding processed foods completely is reasonable. We all like to eat out occasionally, and we all like the crunch of a good chip every now and again. The story is balance. We want to help you create a beautiful life full of foods that are alive and colorful while still enjoying the occasional "treat."

Midlife Friendships for Health and Longevity 28 Sep 202200:33:19

"You've Got a  Friend!"
All of us in midlife know this James Taylor song. I hope you all have friends.; I'm sure you do. Midlife is a great time to invest in friendships. Research shows that people who engage in social connections live longer, happier lives. We know that human beings are meant to live in community.

  • What can you do to foster friendships in midlife?
  • How do you build new relationships in midlife?
  • What is the difference in how you relate to friends now, versus how you did it in your earlier adulthood?
  • Is it harder to make friends in midlife? Why or why not?

These are important questions and things we should be thinking about in midlife.

Midlife Self-care and Pampering: What's the difference?21 Sep 202200:33:20

Do you know the difference between self-care and pampering? Is there a difference?

Self-care has been a buzzword for quite some time. In today's episode Cam and Amelia explore what this term means and how it differs from pampering. In this get-up-and-go, fast-faced, multi-tasking world. taking care of yourself takes on a whole new meaning. It goes beyond bathing, brushing your teeth and getting regular medical checkups. Taking care means guarding your mental, spiritual and emotional needs as well as your physical needs.

There are many activities that qualify as self-care. These are things that help you be the best you that you can be. There are also things that are fun but maybe not essential for your mental, emotional, spiritual or physical self to be healthy.

Your Midlife HPA axis: aka, Managing Cortisol14 Sep 202200:30:36

What the heck is the HPA axis??

This week we're talking about the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal axis. This is the group of glands that produce hormones or messenger chemicals in our bodies that regulate our response to stress. What this means in layman's terms is that we are talking about cortisol, our sympathetic nervous system and our fight-or-flight response.

Today's world leaves many of us in a chronic state of stress. Our Cave Sisters understood that the  fight-or-flight response was reserved for times when chased by a woolly mammoth. But our Modern Sisters see stress almost constantly, eliciting a chronic state of a 'turned on' sympathetic nervous system, adrenal stress and bad metabolic health.

We are here to show you the triggers of adrenal stress and describe real-life solutions for shedding some of the stress. We give you the physical repercussions of maintaining a high-stress lifestyle.

Midlife is time to enjoy, to reclaim your power and to tap into your parasympathetic nervous system. Join us on this journey to a happier, healthier life!

What do FEET have to do with Midlife? 07 Sep 202200:31:09

Our feet are our foundation; how do you treat yours??

This week we're tackling the not-so-sexy subject of feet. We get pedicures; we play footsie; some of us love a good foot massage. But what are our feet telling us?

We demand a lot from our feet. They provide us with a mode of transportation, keep us mobile and provide balance. Some of us suffer from foot maladies such as bunions, calluses or hammer toes.

In this episode we talk about the importance of caring for your foundation and we give you some tips for caring for your feet beyond a pedicure. We talk about balance (and the importance of the big toe) and we give you tips on footwear and grounding.

There are tons of helpful hints in here. We hope you find something useful in this episode. As always, we would really appreciate a review, so that we can share more info with more people! Please share this episode and subscribe!

Listen to Your Body Talk: Biofeedback24 Aug 202200:37:33

Hello? Anybody home? Is there anyone listening?
What is your body trying to tell you? Are you listening?

Today we are talking about biofeedback - those little hints from your mind, body and soul that tell you if everything is going along swimmingly, or that something's going wrong.
Biofeedback is an easy, free way to gauge your body's response to the environment: what you put in it (food, thoughts, etc), what you put on it (clothes, lotions & potions, skincare), and how you talk to it and about it (loving, kind, grateful words or hateful, judgmental and accusatory words). Biofeedback is self-awareness and the first step in healing.

Cam and Amelia talk about this kind of thing ALL the time, but in this episode, we get down to the nitty-gritty.  We talk about cues such as hunger, energy, mood, sex drive and cravings.

Join us as we teach you how to listen to your body; we give you tips for responding as well as sharing personal stories of our own journeys and challenges.

As always, we'd love to hear from you. Please consider rating the podcast and writing a review!

Atomic Habits in Midlife: With Better Habits, Anything is Possible! 17 Aug 202200:34:12

BOOM!  I wish I could do sound effects but I can't. We're here today to talk about atomic habits. The basis for this talk is James Clear's bestselling book by the same name. Also, James Clear is a guest on Brene Brown's podcast on Spotify - that's a great listen as well.

Anyhoo...what are atomic habits and why do we need them?
Have you ever noticed that when you make lofty goals (we used to call them BHAG's in the 1990's), that you never quite get there? That's because biting off a huge chunk of behavior change at one time almost always leads to failure. What you need is a system. Tiny increments of change add up to BIG change over time.

In this episode, Cam and Amelia distill the principles of creating or recreating your systems to set you up for success. Consistency over intensity is the key. We give you the 4 things that build a habit and we give you the tools to unwind a habit as well.

This episode is chock-full of meaningful and practical information. As always, hit that subscribe button and leave us a review. Tell your friends about is and share this episode if it resonates with you.

The Four Agreements in Midlife10 Aug 202200:36:06

The Four Agreements

  • Be Impeccable with your Word
  • Don't take Anything Personally
  • Don't Make Assumptions
  • Always Do Your Best

They seem basic and almost intuitive don't they? But on closer inspection, these are hard tenets to live by and not really supported by our culture.

We are here to show you the ropes. We talk about The Four Agreements pretty much all the time on the podcast; we estimate at least once a month. So here is your quick-and-dirty, i.e. 'Cliff-notes" version of the 4 agreements and how they apply to midlife and how to live them. We tell which ones we struggle with the most and how we overcome that struggle.

Honestly, you can read this book on one sitting. We love it so much that we've included a link so you can purchase it in Cam's Amazon store.

Midlife Mindset: Resetting and Refueling After a Break03 Aug 202200:27:19

Summertime is often considered 'break time' from habits...even healthy ones. What do you do to re-energize your health habits after a break?

Sometimes it's hard. We know what we need to do, but getting the motivation and discipline to do it is another story. But don't throw in the towel!

In this episode, Cam and Amelia share some real-life experiences of how they refocused after mental and physical breaks from a healthy lifestyle. With their usual humor, you will laugh with them and shake your head in agreement, as they share how they suffer the same temptations, struggles and rebounds as everyone else.

The easiest way to approach this is not thinking that you got off track at all, but viewing your life journey with grace and gratitude. After that, it's easy to consider what you get to do for your body to keep it healthy and strong.

  • Understand your motivation
  • Work on self-awareness
  • Keep self-talk positive, not judgmental
  • Lean on your minimums

We hope you find this talk helpful and encouraging. We're your biggest cheerleaders!

Midlife Summer Survival Guide 06 Jul 202200:32:55

Whew! It is hot!
Yep, it's July and no matter where you live, unless it's the Southern Hemisphere, it's summertime! Cam and Amelia both live in locales where summertime heat can easily reach the 90's and the humidity.... well, let's just say it can feel like a sauna outside.

So what do we change when it's hot?

The answers can be individual and quite simple, but solutions to summer survival are important to consider.

How do you change your exercise routine?
How is your hydration status?
How does your diet change?
What about electrolyte balance?
How does your routine change when you go on vacation or travel?

We cover the answers to all of these questions in this episode. So grab a glass of lemonade, a cold beer or a bowl of watermelon and join us!

5 Love Languages & Self-Care in Midlife29 Jun 202200:32:50

How do you express love...to yourself?

Originally published in 1992, Dr. Gary Chapman's book The Five Love Languages is world-famous and much acclaimed. Dr. Chapman's book sought to reinvigorate marriages and create stronger bonds between partners by teaching each individual to recognize how they wish to receive love AND how they express love.

In this episode of the Midlife Mommas, Cam and Amelia explore how we express love to ourselves. There is so much self-actualization going on in midlife and this might be a window into greater happiness. This is part of self-care. We unpack all 5 of the love languages:

  • Words of Affirmation
  • Physical touch
  • Receiving Gifts
  • Quality Time
  • Acts of Service

Each one of these has value and we all give and receive love in all 5 ways at times. But most of us have a preferred way of expressing and recognizing love.

We hope you enjoy this subject as much as we enjoyed brining it to you.

Biohacking through Midlife01 Jun 202200:40:39

'Biohacking' is all the rage now. Do you know what it is?

In the vernacular of the health and wellness space, biohacking is the use of habits, substances or practices that can increase the efficiency of your biology, often resulting in greater longevity (longer life) and easer living (fewer aches and pains, more contentment).

Cam and Amelia bring you some accessible and not-so-crazy biohacks. These are things we've used or done, are currently doing or strongly believe to be helpful in the quest for a longer, happier, more authentic existence. These are things as common and familiar as multi-vitamins or as 'out there' as  nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.

If you're thinking about making some improvements, or you feel that lull of complacency in your health goals wearing thin, this is the episode for you.

We hope you enjoy it; we'd love to hear from you. Reach out to us and let us know what you thought.

Friendships After 5018 May 202200:25:40

How has your approach to friendship changed in midlife?

Friends are important at any age, but Cam and Amelia have found them especially important in midlife. We explore the differences between the relationships we had in our early adulthood to the ones we have now. Women love to be in community, but it's important to set boundaries, invoke honesty and bring kindness into friendships....which we are much better able to do in midlife.

We hope you will join us for this fun and friendly conversation. We discuss how we have changed over the years and what different attributes we look for in our midlife friends than we did in our early adulthood.  We hope you are as happy in your friendships as we are!

GenX and Motherhood11 May 202200:37:07

Guess what? If you were born between the mid 1960's and 1979, you are a Gen X'er!

It's the week after Mother's Day and we are talking about all things motherhood. Whether you are a mother or are reflecting on your mother, we all have mothers in our lives who have affected who we are. We thank them, applaud them and love them.

Join Cam and Amelia as we walk down memory lane and discuss the freedom of being children in the 1970's, being latchkey kids, having chore lists and riding our bikes all over town. We talk about how these experiences have shaped who we are as mothers.

Fast forward 40 years where kids are glued to screens, shuttled to soccer, volleyball, baseball and swimming and have information at their fingertips. Us 70's kids have learned how to approach the world in a whole new way as we watch our kids navigate the information age.

Gen X kids had to wait in line to use the phone, look up numbers in a paper phone book and shopped for Christmas presents in the Sears catalogue. Millennial kids use cell phones, Google things and shop online. Oh what a difference!

We cover all things mothers; from the cool things our moms did to the ways we wanted to be different from them. This is a fun and happy episode, ya'll. We hope you'll join us.

Rest, Reframe, & Recognition to a Better Midlife27 Apr 202200:28:13

Whoops! Sometimes we all need a reset.

Join Cam and Amelia as we discuss some 'ah-ha' moments that led us to record the Three R's: Rest Reframing and Recognizing. I'm not gonna lie. This was a tough one. Realizing that we might be a little off kilter and that we might be going down a negative path is sometimes hard.
Triggering events make some people feel angry, some resentful, some embarrassed and some just plain tired. Many times, we don't even realize this is happening.

This is self-actualization in progress. Midlife is the perfect time to interrupt bad behaviors and take control of our self talk. Using rest as a backdrop for this, we talk  about reframing our thoughts for a more positive outlook. Finally, the main event, recognizing when this is happening is the hardest of all.

If you, like us, are struggling a little bit with this, you'll love this episode. As always, we bring you real girlfriend talk in real time. As we explore and are curious about our actions and reactions to midlife, we bring you right along with us.

Everybody Poops: What Your Momma Didn't Tell You20 Apr 202200:25:12

Gals! I know this is NOT a fun or PC subject, but we must  talk about it. Bowel movements are one of the most natural of functions and a huge indicator of health. It's weird because dudes talk about this all the time; so why shouldn't we?? It's nothing to be embarrassed about.

You should be checking your urine color and stool consistency daily. It's part of assessing your health. So find out what your poop is telling you in this episode. We promise that it's not too gross. This is real talk (like all our episodes are) informing you of some things you really need to evaluate in everyday life.

There are tons of things that can affect your poop. We go over them. There are many  organs involved in making poop. We tell you what those are. We talk about the pitfalls of 'not going' every day and what your poop should look like. So tune in; this will be a fun(ny) one.

From Gut Feelings to Overall Gut Health13 Apr 202200:31:13

While similar to what it has been, your gut in midlife is changing. We are here to talk about the midlife gut and some of the changes that you can expect.

In recent years, gut health has been all the rage in the health and wellness space. We want to demystify it. Gut health is important because the gut is referred to as the 'second brain'. What you eat affects all aspects of life, including cognitive and emotional function. It follows the old adage of 'garbage in, garbage out'.

With a plethora of convenience and processed foods constantly available, it's easier than ever to eat on the run, using nutrient-bereft foods that aren't satiating and could be addictive. Adding sugar to many processed foods makes them 'hyper-palatable' while severely damaging the gut microbiome and possibly the gut lining, setting you up for a leaky gut or worse.

There are many signs of an unhealthy gut, and we cover many of them in this episode. We explain what organs and parts make up the gut and why each part is vital to proper digestion and good health.

We talk about inflammation and give you a 'starter' protocol for creating a healthy balance in the gut.

We hope you join us for this informative episode.

Chicken Soup for the Midlife Body and Soul06 Apr 202200:37:14

Remember the book series 'Chicken Soup for the...'? Started in 1993, these books provided a "story" that helped you help yourself and make your world a better place to live. Maybe this was the beginning of the 'self-care' movement.

Chicken Soup for the Midlife Body and Soul is meant to have you question what you are doing and whether or not you can add something that brings joy to your life, or more probably, is there something that you can drop that no longer services you?

Cam and Amelia are all about authenticity, honesty and living your best life. And guess how gets to decide what that looks like?? YOU do!

We hope that all our episodes empower you. But this on in particular is a guide to the many aspects that affect your wellbeing of mind, body and spirit. We give you what inspires us; now get out there and find out what inspires YOU!

Morning Routines in Midlife: Make the Most of Your Day30 Mar 202200:26:44

What does your 'morning routine' look like?

What morning routine, you may ask. Some folks make mornings a mad dash, rolling out of bed, grabbing a cup of java, and running out the door. Others prefer a more leisurely approach, luxuriating in bed, slowing arising, meditating, and enjoying coffee while watching the sunrise.

Most of us in midlife like some kind of routine that grounds us for the day; in fact, an Instagram survey showed that 67% of us have a routine. 50% of us include fitness in our morning routine, and 2/3 of us said quiet time is important in the mornings.

In this episode, Cam and Amelia explore what a morning routine looks like and how each element of the routine can be beneficial. Each step might not be necessary to every person, but we feel like many of these things will resonate with most of you.

Midlife Sleep: Why it Matters & How to Get More of It23 Mar 202200:35:37

Boy, is this important! As we've told you before, sleep is one of the pillars of health, a foundation, you might say.

We care so much about sleep, that this is the 2nd time we've addressed it. The first time was June of 2021, (Listen HERE), and here we are again, just after the change to daylight savings, talking about sleep. It's THAT important.

Learning how to sleep is a real thing. Maybe you slept 'like a baby' in your 20s, but you're not sleeping that well now and wondering why. There are a myriad of reasons why sleep in midlife is a challenge. It all matters from hot flashes to noise to blue light to alcohol consumption, and it affects your sleep.

We tackle all these things and more in this episode. Plus, we give you some tips for overcoming.

Little Leaks from Coughing and Sneezing: The Midlife Pelvic Floor23 Feb 202200:29:55

Have you ever had that little anxious moment....right before sneezing when you feared that you'd leak the slightest dribble of urine? It's a real concern for many women in midlife.

We are here to discuss this difficult, embarrassing and very common subject. The first thing to know is that while common, this is not normal.  Many of use are told by our doctors that a little urine leakage while coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising or lifting is just an unfortunate result of aging. But it's not. This a result of weak pelvic floor muscles.

In this episode we talk about :

  • What your pelvic floor is
  • How you exercise your pelvic floor muscles
  • The difference between weak pelvic floor muscles and tight pelvic floor muscles
  • What makes you prone to weak pelvic floor muscles
  • What treatments are available if you are leaking urine

At the end of this episode, we posit how your pelvic floor affects your intimacy and we invite you to tell US if this subject is important to you and if you'd like us to do an episode on it.

Real-life Solutions for the Midlife Midsection16 Feb 202200:36:51

Greetings Midlifers! We are so excited to bring you this episode. Midsection weight gain is a concern for many. The first time we addressed this subject was back on September 22, 2021, in an episode called Belly Fat, Insulin, and Midlife, so if you haven't listened to that one, check it out as well.

There are many reasons for midlife weight gain, not the least of which is a decrease in our 'warrior' hormone, estrogen. But decreased muscle mass, mindless snacking, and a whole host of other things are contributors as well.

Join Cam and Amelia as we walk you through the reasons for midlife and midsection weight gain and give tons of ways to reduce it. Not everything works for everybody, so definitely listen to the whole episode to get every little tidbit.

Caffeine and Alcohol in Midlife02 Feb 202200:33:14

Most of us consume some amount of alcohol and/or caffeine. Both of these things are common in our culture. In fact, how many times have you called a friend and said, 'Want to meet for coffee?' or 'Want to meet for a drink?'

All of our systems, body, and mind, change in midlife. We've been talking about midlife changes for months! This week we tackle caffeine and alcohol. We are all about taste everything, binge on nothing, and alcohol and caffeine are not exceptions.

We teach you how and why these substances affect you differently in midlife. We talk about caffeine as a 'pick-me-up' and alcohol to 'raise the floor'.

We hope you  join us for this fun, fascinating talk about 2 of our culture's most abundant and favorite 'drugs'. We give you our personal strategies and what alternatives we use. There is nothing inherently wrong with using caffeine and alcohol, but as with everything else, moderation is key.

As always, please subscribe, leave us a review, and we would love it if you'd take a screenshot of yourself listening and post on Social and tag us, @thehelpfulplate, @heymomma_cam, @midlife.mommas.
