Suraquia Atelier21 Aug 202500:31:21

Payal just stepped into Surarquía’s sun-lit workshop near the Sagrada Familia and straight into the story of two South-American dreamers who turned a Barcelona flat into a leather lab.

Alejandro (Venezuela) and Felipe (Colombia) swapped architecture sketches for pattern-making, taught themselves to sew, and after kitchen-table prototypes, opened this atelier where every bag is cut, skived, and stitched by their own hands

. In 2023 they finally moved the machines out of the apartment and into a purpose-built space, but the process is still gloriously slow and local

In today’s episode, Payal gets the founders’-eye tour: the vintage Adler stitcher, the splitter that hums like an old Vespa, and the stopwatch that shows why a single Surarquía piece takes an entire workday to earn its seams.

The group has three award-winning Afghan restaurants in the D.C. area.

Omar is proud to serve up old family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. They use quality ingredients and an array of spices and fresh herbs, Afghan Bistro, Bistro Aracosia and Aracosia McLean have something for everyone's taste.

Omar believes in providing traditional Afghan hospitality, educating and promoting the food and culture of his people. The three restaurants give the diners an opportunity to get a glimpse of the era in Afghanistan which is now sadly forgotten.

"The universe speaks to us through its amazing creations. We've become deaf and blind to the beautiful colours and sounds that are constantly being displayed.

Now I know that a Warrior and Poet resides in every soul. The hard part is to make sure the Warrior in you is always dormant and the Poet to be always singing and dancing"- Omar Masroor

Emilya Colliver Founder, Art Pharmacy Australia11 Nov 202100:22:40

Emilya Colliver, Art Pharmacy’s founder and CEO has over 18 years’ experience in the art world across the public and private sectors, Emilya is driven by her passion for supporting Australian art and the practitioners who create it. Her work is characterised by strong leadership, inclusivity, deep stakeholder engagement and a focus on creating outcomes which not only satisfy but exceed her clients’ requirements, surprising and delighting in equal measure.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History and has worked for some of the top art institutions and collectors in the world including The British Museum. Since returning to Australia from London some years ago, Emilya has become a key contributor to the NSW arts scene, as her advisory committee memberships overleaf attest.

Her vision for Art Pharmacy, both through its consulting arm and its online gallery, is to bring artists and artworks closer to the community. Whether that’s curating an art strategy for a large corporation to enhance the daily working lives of its staff, or activating a public space for a local government to enhance the lives of the people who live and work in that area, her initial focus is on understanding what story these communities want to tell, to see, and to hear.

Emilya’s passion for the role of art in place-making is also evident through her second business, Culture Scouts.  She might be leading a long-term Sydney resident on a rediscovery of their home town, or a tourist seeking another perspective on harbour city, but her goal will be the same: telling the story of the city through its arts and culture. It is this career-long vision which she will bring to this exciting project.

Saurabh Taneja18 Oct 202100:37:32

Saurabh Taneja graduated from IIT Delhi, and intended to move towards a career in the corporate sector. However due to a small stint as a volunteer, Saurabh discovered his passion for making a difference.

In 2009, Saurabh became a fellow with Teach For India. During his fellowship, he taught in a municipal school in Mumbai where he found the disparity in the opportunities available for children coming from low-income communities and from wealthy neighborhoods was starkly prevalent. Saurabh was struck by the thought of opening his own school.

It was then that an opportunity to start a secondary school opened up in Pune. Saurabh led the first Akanksha Secondary school in Pune in partnership with the Pune Municipal Corporation and The Thermax Foundation. During his time as the School Leader, he took three batches of students through the SSC exams with a 100% pass rate.

Saurabh is a humble and a deeply passionate leader with a vision to lead Akanksha into its next phase of growth.
