Demand Avoidance That's Not PDA09 Sep 202400:11:31

Sometimes we avoid the demands of our everyday lives, even the ones we place on ourselves. It takes a lot of energy to resist doing what needs to be done. It’s different from PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) in how it affects us and what we can do about it.

The Podcast has a New Name! 06 Mar 202200:02:06

Autism is known by a number of different names. I chose to use the word “aspergers” because it is a term that combines a number of traits common to this brain wiring. Autism is called autism spectrum disorder, aspergers syndrome, high functioning autism, low functioning autism, neurological development disorder. We hear that someone is on the spectrum, is autistic, is a person with autism, is an autistic person, is neurodiverse. Other words are used in discussions about autism like Aspie, Aut, differently wired, neurodivergent, neurotypical, allistic, ableist and more.

Terminology is evolving and some words have a great deal of emotional content for some. I do recognize that although each person is different there are some traits we have in common. To make it clear that the podcast is focused on those of us with aspergers syndrome, I used that in the name of the podcast. That word has fallen out of favor within the autistic community as we work toward language that is accurate and positive. The word aspergers has developed a negative connotation because of concerns about its origin.

It seems that many of the terms used to describe autistics and autism are emotionally charged. It’s understandable considering the bias and prejudice that exists which is based on a lack of knowledge about the true nature of autism. Unfortunately much of the disinformation and faulty conclusions about autism and autistics comes from some scientific research.

The name of the podcast has changed — find out why here!

Autism and Domestic Violence, Episode 3: Triangulation11 Jan 202200:16:57

Manipulators create triangles in relationships to control and confuse. Would you recognize this common method of abuse?

An autistic person's best characteristics can leave them vulnerable to this kind of emotional abuse. It's subtle and easy to miss.

Abusers create a triangle with two other people who are fooled and manipulated into believing in a false reality. It's sneaky so a victim may not even realize it's happening.

Not all triangles are unhealthy. Listen to learn how to spot it!

Autism and Domestic Violence - Episode 203 Jan 202200:15:31

Do you recognize the messages about love and relationships that make people vulnerable to abuse? Movies, books, family and more all paint an idealized picture of what love and commitment looks like. Fictional versions of love can keep us from seeing reality. These examples may seem all too familiar.

Anticipation Fixation18 Oct 202100:07:38

Ever feel like you’re getting way too excited over something that hasn’t happened yet? It seems like your imagination goes wild and it feels great! Could it be a variation of rumination?

Reactions to the news of something important can feel so good that the brain sees all kinds of possibilities. Pretty soon, a person can be planning their life around something that is mere speculation.

Probably not perseveration, doubtful it"s rumination, is this a thing?
