| Mechanista in G – World Solar Challenge | 05 Feb 2025 | ||
As Dylan argues on this ep, life on Earth is owed to the sun. So why has it taken us so long to make decent cars that use the sun? Sure, this is terrible logic that doesn't follow at all. But also I feel like I should own a solar car by now. Well, let's look at some really impractical ones- solar RACE cars. They're pretty cool, even if they look like cuts of salmon. X Dive is an- ahem, sorry. X DiVE is an interesting image of what Mega Man design might look like if the series had been continued to the current day. We spend a lot of both of these episodes talking about how the designs from the X series of games are so bad, but they cover a pretty specific period of time, and reflect the aesthetics of that era. Kind of. Frankly there was good design back then too, and I'm just making excuses. You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media's Patreon! We're always comparing transforming robots and their flight forms to schmup ships. Well, maybe it's time to turn the tables. As per a listener request, let's talk about a schmup ship, and... ok well, I guess we don't really compare it to robots much. Except the one that is a robot! Or two. Two that are robots. The bright spot in talking about Gundam Seed is that at least the robots are cool. EXCEPT TODAY! Today there is no bright spot, no silver lining, no upside. We're here to talk about a machine that sucks with weapons that suck piloted by a character that sucks during a part of the show that sucks! I hate it here!!! Sometimes, size is a virtue. We've seen our Full Armor Gundams, our Super Gundams, Chobham Armor and our Igelstellung packs. Virtue ain't need none of that. Virtue bigh. And when they get around to doing a Gundam Devise Virtue? You're gonna see some series s... stuff. Sorry I just remembered we have younger listeners. No no, not the Devil Gundam... though there's evil hidden in this thing's interior. We don't get a lot of variants because it's Reconguista in G, but this Ippei Gyoubu friend still has plenty to discuss. I do this on the ep, but I'll urge you again to look at Ippei Gyoubu's art for the G-Lucifer instead of the production art- the details he adds make such a huge difference! You may get the impression from the first episode of Turn A that the FLAT is a non-military mobile suit. This is... incorrect! This Syd Mead friend is ready to fight, and at least to me feels the most Syd Mead of all his Turn A designs. Plus, we get to talk about futurism in mobile suit design, and Destiny armor! A little. The dice can sit this one out- it's time to talk about the F91, whether my purple d10 and d4 want us to or not. The chest vents. The VSBRs. The after-images. And the legacy it left, as marking a new era of design for Gundam's most prolific mecha design, Kunio Okawara. It may not be a racing mecha, but it's a winning Formula all the same. A Hizack for a new generation, a Zaku with Federation design elements! I mean, not really. It's a Sazabi with some Geara Doga, a surprising but small dash of Sinanju, maybe some Powered GM in there, a lil Kampfer. But still! Like a lot of Titans suits, it's Zeon Minus Zeon. And that is a triumph. I dunno what to do with this boy. I mean, he's fun. Weird dude. Cop? Don't like cops. Grabby arms. Probably will never get a gunpla because it's a strange design that isn't important from a show that isn't that popular (which is WILD given how flippin' good it is, but I think the aesthetic does put a lot of Gundam fans off). All the world's a hero, and we merely lost in this ill-considered and half-baked "joke." "I don't know if this show is great, but the idea of the Gundam being pursued by other gundams is kinda fun," you likely thought. Little did you know. It's special guest time as we head into uncharted territory- let's talk about the ships of Gundam! Battleships, carriers, an entry capsule, what have you got? I'm certainly used to women being mistreated and misused in Gundam, but Ennil stings because it feels like there was no reason this had to happen! I'm not saying the show is great about gender or anything, but it isn't a Tomino show and you can tell! She could have had it all! Well. Not Toniya. The show is definitely too cishet-brained for THAT. But she could have had a lot, and for some reason she just doesn't get it. A general goes to war with the army that was given to him by his mafia sponsor, not the one he wants. Or rather, he doesn't even do that- as famously one of the machines we're talking about today spent a long time on the bench. The Shiden sits in a weird place among IBO grunts, feeling torn between the rest of the world's design, and other 00s and beyond Gundam art. But it's still cool. The Axis Drop. The climax of Char's Counterattack, as a massive asteroid, plucked from the asteroid belt and repurposed into a huge colony, is intentionally hurled towards the Earth. Could we redirect such a thing? Well, there are a lot of problems with such a scenario. For one, it's really better to try way, WAY sooner than they did in that movie. Also Axis had maneuvering thrusters to counteract any counter-counterattack. BUT. Let's ignore those objections for a moment. If it's just an asteroid headed for the Earth? Noooo problem. We can throw that off course. Why do I know this? Because we DID. It wasn't exactly headed towards us, but the DART program from John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory demonstrated a month ago today that we can redirect asteroids with a simple probe impact. That's just one APL project, a group with history dating back to the end of World War II. And who better to guide us through their history than current APL employee Space Instrumentation Electrical Engineer Nick Seese. Yes, THAT Nick Seese. The duality of man, folks. Drop the A, folks: it's time for 'Mechs not mecha. To be honest, I am real hot and cold on BattleTech: on the one hand, it doesn't do MOST of the things I love about mecha, but on the other, it DOES do things I like about both tanks and ground level sci-fi. The biggest bully mobile suit of them all. I mean, ok. If you ask me which one it is, mobile armor or mobile suit, it's like... if you have to pick one it's a mobile armor. I make this argument on the ep, but it is stored in and deploys in mobile armor mode. So that's its primary designation. But it is both of those things. Our opening theme is the Hangar Theme from Gundam Breaker 3, and our ending theme for this episode is Trust Me by Yuna Ito from Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Our podcast art is a fantastic piece of work from Twitter artist @fenfelt. Want to see a list of every unit we've covered from every episode, including variants and tangents? It's right here. Tiny, but fierce. We've got more SD Gundam designs for you this week, though... it's mostly just a ton of versions of the same one. But 1) they're pretty cool and 2) when you have Son Wukong, the Monkey King, as a Gundam? Yeah, I mean, he deserves his own spotlight, I think. | Mechanista in G – Minovsky Particles | 29 Jun 2022
A question from listener Lodric has us sitting down today to settle a core question: what the heck is a Minovsky particle? How is that different from an I Field, or a Mega Particle, or a beam particle? Who is Dr. Minovsky? Ok no one actually cares about that last question but imagine if they did! We will settle all of these questions and more, today. If you want to find us on Twitter, Dylan is @lowpolyrobot and Six is @sixdettmar. Juri Wu Nien is the most like an actual astray. God, even when Seed has a cool idea they eff it up, you know? The Astray SHOULD BE COOL! On paper, it's neat! It's a friend! But you can't look at it without staring through layer after layer of misuse and incompetent writing! A part of me wants a remake of Seed to see if they can do better. But that's a small part, because why bother? It's not like the idea is good enough to salvage. Just make new things. Then again it's not like we're gonna cure Japan of its Seed love, so maybe we could just make them support a show that isn't complete torture to watch. I'm torn on the matter. | Mechanista in G – MSM-07 Z’Gok | 15 Jun 2022
There's an instinct from folks to compare the Z'Gok to a crab, but I don't really think it fits. Its body to claw ratio is all wrong. It doesn't have that fun "put em up" posture. Maybe it's a lobster? Hmm. Unsure. I DO know it's a friend, though. If you want to find us on Twitter, Dylan is @lowpolyrobot and Six is @sixdettmar.
