Professor Augustinus Bader and Charles Rosier, LIVE at MECCA George Street06 Mar 202400:41:43

In today’s episode of MECCA Talks – recorded live and in front of a studio audience at MECCA George Street – Kate is joined by Professor Augustinus Bader and Charles Rosier, Co-Founders and CEO, respectively, of the brand responsible for Hollywood’s picture perfect complexions, Augustinus Bader.

A globally recognized biomedical scientist and physician, and leading expert in the field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, Professor Bader co-founded the line of “too good to be true” formulas with CEO Charles Rosier, an entrepreneurial, science-minded investor who put everything on the line – his home, his savings, and his reputation – to bring the Augustinus Bader brand to life, and fuel Professor Bader’s greater work in skin, science and epigenetics.

The two go deep into the science of the brand – including the process of transforming Professor Bader’s astonishing medical breakthroughs in wound healing into a revolutionary skin-healing cream that appealed to the masses – and talk about how, with no marketing or PR, their products got into the hands of Don Johnson, Melanie Griffiths, Brad Pitt and Courtney Cox.

Watch the conversation, filmed live at MECCA George Street, on the MECCA Memo.

D.S. & DURGA are leading a fragrance revolution22 Nov 202300:32:14

In today’s episode, Kate is in New York visiting the Brooklyn HQ of Kavi and David Moltz, the creative brains (and noses) behind non-traditional fragrance house, D.S. & Durga. David, a musician and self-taught perfumer, alongside Kavi, an architect and designer, work together approaching scent like music or art – breaking the boundaries of the very exclusive, illusive and traditional fragrance industry while they’re at it. Over a cup of fresh-brewed tea (David’s other great passion), they spill the story of how their unexpected fragrances are imagined, why they were onto the viral ‘pistachio’ scent three years before anyone else and how, when it comes to your brand, saying no can be more important than saying yes.

How Allies of Skin turned founder Nicolas Travis’ life (and skin) around09 Aug 202300:41:57

In today’s episode of MECCA Talks, Kate is joined by Allies of Skin founder Nicolas Travis. With a degree in biomedical and pharmaceutical science, a master’s in international business and a history of severe acne and reconstructive facial surgery, Nicolas created Allies of Skin from a desire to rebuild his own confidence, and to demystify skincare, making it simple, accessible and – above all else – efficacious.

Nicolas’ unbelievably smooth, glassy skin is proof enough that the brand delivers on the words printed on each bottle (and the science-backed formulas within them) – however, if you’re searching for more, you’ll discover famous fans in the likes of Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber, Niall Horan, January Jones and Henry Golding.

Having launched in 2016 with just three products, Allies of Skin has reached cult status in record time – hit play to find out why.

Steps to sustainability with Nécessaire and The Wardrobe Crisis24 Aug 202201:07:18

In this episode of MECCA Talks, Kate and Zara are joined by sustainability educator Clare Press, as well as Randi Christiansen, the co-founder of cult body care brand Nécessaire.

As the fashion and beauty industries become more conscious and sustainable, we thought we’d bring in the professionals to share the steps they’re taking to leave a smaller footprint on the Earth (and a brighter impact on our day-to-day), as well as the tweaks we can make to be kinder to our planet via our wardrobes and beauty routines.

From 03:42, Clare shares her experience becoming Vogue Australia’s first sustainability editor (a role she held from 2018 – 2020), discovering – and uncovering – the fashion supply chain, and going on to educate and empower others to better understand their wardrobes.

Then from 32:44, Randi talks Kate through her career as an executive in the beauty industry, and how that – alongside her Scandinavian origins – led her to develop the climate-neutral, plastic-neutral, vegan, recyclable-packaged, skin-loving and eminently Instagrammable ‘It’ brand that is Nécessaire.

Flamingo Estate’s Richard Christiansen on life chapters and radical pleasure 29 Jun 202201:08:23

Celebrated creative Richard Christiansen’s home is not a restaurant, though Chrissy Teigen might have you fooled otherwise!

In this episode of MECCA Talks, Kate and Zara are joined by the man of many life chapters, whose quirky LA residence evolved into a salt-of-the-earth produce, wellness, home and body care brand during the pandemic – and fast resonated with Hollywood (including the aforementioned Chrissy, as well as likes of Oprah, Ellen, Martha Stewart and Hailey Bieber), and now, the rest of the world.

Listen as Christiansen generously shares the journey from his farm-style upbringing in rural NSW to a law career in London, to fashion, publishing and advertising in New York – and finally to the COVID-induced ‘pivot’ that turned everything on its head. This is the pleasure-filled story of Flamingo Estate, now available at MECCA.

The metaverse, explained by Meta’s Jason Juma-Ross15 Jun 202200:40:21

The metaverse is real, and it’s about to change the way we work, socialise, and experience beauty. So – we best start talking about it! To do just that, Kate and Zara are joined by Jason Juma-Ross, (a.k.a. JJR), Director of Technology Strategy at Meta; the company formerly known as Facebook.

JJR is a global leader in tech innovation, and the perfect person to explain exactly what the metaverse is (and will be), and how we can expect our lives to change over the course of the next decade.

From actualising futuristic tech from ‘90s sci-fi films – to unpacking the way the internet was built with a male bias – this chat is an unintimidating introduction to the basics of Web3 and the future of experiential beauty. It’s one for the sceptics... and those already sporting a VR headset.

Astrology, energy healing and crystals: the new self-care18 May 202201:14:16

From star signs to tarot cards and crystals, we’re exploring the new frontier of self-care with Yasmin Sewell, founder of wellness-meets-fragrance brand, Vyrao, and Alice Bell, NYC’s chicest astrologer and our go-to person for anything star- (and sun, and moon!) related.

First, Yasmin joins Kate and Zara in the studio to take us on her journey from Sydney to London, where she opened inimitable fashion boutique Yasmin Cho in her early twenties, and later became one of fashion’s top tastemakers for the likes of Browns, Liberty and Farfetch. Then, of course, we jump into the present, where Yasmin finds herself homing in on her long-time passion for energetic healing, connection and master perfumery through Vyrao – a fragrance brand unlike any other.

Zara then jumps on the line with Alice, a US Vogue fashion assistant-turned-astrologer whose initial interest in better understanding her identity, purpose, quirks and love life became a full-time career. Between chart readings, mentoring, education, digital content, brand partnerships and her podcast, Alice is giving us the 411 on Astrology 101 – and, how best to handle Mercury’s current retrograde.

How TikTok changed everything for Carla Rockmore and Chantecaille20 Apr 202201:35:48

In today’s episode of MECCA Talks, Kate and Zara tap into their TikTok ‘For You’ pages to unpack two internet success stories: ‘the Euphoria foundation’ and Carla Rockmore.

The first story we hear is that of the Chantecaille Future Skin foundation, a MECCA icon that flew off our shelves the moment Euphoria makeup designer Donni Davy mentioned it was her go-to base on the HBO show. Alex Chantecaille, VP of sales and promotions at Chantecaille (and daughter of the brand’s founder, Sylvie), shares her reaction to the 13-year-old foundation’s newfound virality, and tells us how the brand is – and always was – making waves in formulation and environmental philanthropy.

Then, Carla Rockmore – or as Vogue likes to call her, ‘the real-life Carrie Bradshaw’ – joins Kate and Zara from her now-famous closet to talk TikTok success at age 54, pivoting from jewellery designer to content creator when the pandemic left her in a pickle, and utilising fashion and social media as a form of self-expression. This conversation had us falling in love with Carla all over again!

The classic red lip: let's talk about it06 Apr 202200:44:48

MECCA makeup expert Jen Horsley is back on the podcast to talk us through beauty’s most iconic – and contentious – look: the red lip. Then, New York-based artist and poet Amber Vittoria joins Kate and Zara to dish the details on her recent project, MECCA’s all-new logo, iconography and packaging.

Take notes as Jen, a self-proclaimed ‘red lip connoisseur’, shares her top picks for the perfect crimson pout and the quasi-rule we should all be following when it comes to lip liner…

…before Amber talks us through her creative process, designing MECCA’s new visual identity, staying inspired through the pandemic, and dipping her toes in the world of digital art and NFTs.

Why your microbiome is the next big thing in skin 23 Mar 202201:08:49

Pre, pro and post-biotic extracts are increasingly appearing on the ingredient lists of new skincare formulas, so we’ve got MECCA skincare expert Lucy Shaw and Cultured founder Rob Calcraft on the podcast to tell us why.

First, Lucy gives us the lingo low-down on all things microbiome; she explains what the term ‘skin barrier’ actually means, how the probiotics in our skincare differ to those in our yoghurt, and why we should start thinking about our skin as an ‘ecosystem’.

Then, Rob – who also co-founded REN Clean Skincare – chats to Kate and Zara about his journey into (and out of, and back into) skincare following a new-found fixation on the microbiome, in what might be our most hilarious and scintillating conversation yet.

Emily Weiss On Why Glossier Isn’t A Trend Brand26 Jul 202400:29:42

In today’s episode, Kate is joined by Emily Weiss, founder of Glossier, to celebrate the launch of her cult-loved brand into Australia and New Zealand, exclusively at MECCA.

After leaving a career in fashion to work full-time on her popular beauty blog, Into The Gloss, Emily saw a gap in the market for a brand that had a customer-focused, “Skin First. Makeup Second.” philosophy. It was that idea that led to the launch of Glossier in 2014, which quickly became the NYC ‘it’ brand beauty lovers globally were desperate to get their hands on. 10 years (and a lot of pink) later, the brand has amassed a cult following thanks to iconic products such as Boy Brow, Balm Dot Com and the Glossier You Fragrance.

Now, Emily is in Australia, and here with us in the studio, to give us the low-down on MECCA’s most requested brand ever.
