The Parsha starts with Avraham being singled out for tremendous blessing, but it doesn't introduce his greatness the way it does by Noach. What was it that made Avraham so extraordinary and differentiated him from Noach, Mesushelach, Malki-Tzedek and all the Tzaddikim who came before him? Why was he the one chosen to be the foundation of the Jewish people?

Chazal bring a famous story about Avraham smashing his father Terach's idols. Rav Yechezkal Levenstein asks what the arguments in the story are meant to teach us, they weren't the foundation of Avraham's Emunah, nor of ours, so why did Chazal put them in the Midrash? The essentiality of not just knowing evil is wrong, but also combating it with Bitul and mockery.

Haazinu is a shira about Jewish history, how we will experience Hashem's kindness, but then rebell from our state of comfort, and be punished for severely for it. How do we frame these calamities and our personal tzaros, are they simply punishments, or are they for the good of the world?

We are told to use tricks to do battle with our Yetzer Harah. Avos DiRabbi Noson says Hashem explaining in the Parsha why the troubles that will befall the Jewish people befell them is an example of a fence. The Torah telling us to distance from Arayos is a fence. What fences around our weak spots can we make in our own lives to keep us out of trouble?

On the last day of Pesach in every fourth and seventh year, a person would come to the Mikdash and do Vidui Maasaros. What is unique about the Mitzvah of Maaser that a person would make this declaration? We don't find such declarations by other Mitzvos.

Bonus found after doing the recording - Pashtus the language of Vudui found in Chazal here is a declaration, not a confession, and that is how Malbim explains it. However the Seforno translates it as a confession, and gives a pshat how there is a confession here, from the fact that we are giving it to Shevet Levi instead of the Bechorim, which was a result of our sins with the Eigel. Seems to me like a Shmuess that we are confessing for that today, and that are we maybe supposed to tap into those feelings of shame every time we do this vidui.

The Torah gives allowance for a soldier at war to take a Yefas Toar and be Migayer her, lest he come to take her even if she were forbidden. Can he force her to accept the Mitzvos against her will? Since when does the Torah make allowances for us the Yetzer Hara? Aren't only the biggest Tzaddikim allowed in the army, shouldn't they be stronger than this?

A king was commanded to carry around a special Torah scroll at all times. What was the nature of the scroll, and why did a king need to carry it around more than anybofy else? What can it teach us for Rosh Chodesh Elul?

A good chodesh, a Ksivah Vchasimah Tovah, and a good Shabbos

The Torah tells us to destroy and degrade Avodah Zarah, but not to do so such things towards Hashem. Why is it important to treat Shem Hashem and Divrei Kedusha with respect. What needs burial and what doesn't? What needs to be kept out of a bathroom? What is one's responsibility when distributing Torah material?

The Torah says the Eyes of Hashem are always upon Eretz Yisrael, from beginning to end. Chazal say the Pasuk teaches concepts in Rosh Hashana setting the tone for the year. Something to think about as we start to turn to Hashem for a sweet new year for EY and beyond.

After the tenth of Av, we stop mourning the destruction, and start focusing on the future redemption. How do we switch gears like that when we don't say any change in our reality? Nice idea from Rav Yeruchem Olshin.

The 11th Pasuk in the parsha starts with Eicha, and is lained with the Eicha tune. Chazal say there are three Neviim who said Eicha, and they saw the Jewish people in three different states. Was Moshe deciding to delegate the judgments connected to the Churban? Was it a sign of a bad root?

The last Mitzvah Moshe does for the Jewish people at the end of Bamidbar is setting aside the Arei Miklat. Why is protecting killers a top priority, especially since they wouldn't provide protection until Yehoshua set aside the other three inside EY? Why can't a Rotzeach leave if Klal Yisrael needs him?

Chazal teach that in some ways Kalev was greater than Yehoshua. The Midrash says Yehoshua was chosen because he served Moshe more than anyone else, including setting up the benches and mats in the Bais Medrash. Why was that a zechus to become the next leader?

Chazal tell us that those who rule over their Yetzer tell us the secret is to make a cheshbon. The Mesillas Yesharim expounds on the idea that this is the only way we can be successful, even if we do many things for our Avodas Hashem.

The story of Korach is the prime example in the Torah of machlokes. Why is Machlokes so severe, that even the babies of Dasan and Aviram were killed, that all their money was destroyed? How we differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate machlokes?

The Parsha has the story of Pesach Sheini, where those who were tamei mes on Pesach complained that they missed the chance to bring the Korban, and Moshe asked Hashem and was told they could make it up on 14 Iyaar. Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz asked why Hashem made them ask first, why not just teach it to Moshe initially? Some ideas from the Ramban and the Ramchal about Tefilah and why we need to ask in order to receive.

The Torah puts the parshiyos of Nazir and Sotah next to each other to teach that one who sees the Sotah process should take on Nezirus from wine. Why does seeing the Sotah make one have more of a need than anyone else to become a Nazir? Some ideas in both the influences and inspirations we can take from our surroundings.

The Torah introduces the sons of Aharon as the offspring of Aharon and Moshe. Why would they be listed as offspring of Moshe? Why are talmidei yeshiva referred to as Bnei HaYeshiva?

The Torah says we start counting Sefirah from the day after Shabbos. Chazal said it means the day after Yom Tov, the Tzedokim said it means the Sunday after Pesach. Why did the Torah write it that way, and why did the Tzedokim hire false witnesses and the like to pick this specific battle?

The Chassidim say that learning the Ohr Hachaim is a segula for many things, and that all the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov can be found within the Ohr HaChaim. The Skver Rebbe encourages his chassidim to learn and review this Ohr HaChaim in 18:3-4 about the importance of guarding ourselves in the area of morality and intimacy.

When the Bnei Yisrael were at the Yam Suf, Chazal tell us we were being judged whether to be saved, or to be destroyed with the Mitzriyim. How could Hashem have destroyed them at that time, what would have been the point of all the miracles of Mitzrayim? Does it put more pressure on us when we are saved with the Midas HaRachamim, as opposed to the Midas Hadin?

The Parsha starts off saying that we should tell our children and grandchildren how Hashem made a mockery of Mitzrayim? In what ways did Hashem make a mockery of Mitzrayim and of Pharaoh, and what were the reasons for doing it in that fashion?

Why did Moshe Rabbeinu came from a marriage that would later be forbidden by the Torah? Chizkuni explains based on Yoma 22b that a leader of the Tzibbur needs to have a basket of Sheratzim hanging from them to keep them humble. The Torah says the king of Mitzrayim died and then they cried out in pain. Why did that cause them to cry out, according to those who learn that he actually died? Was the crying in prayer to Hashem, or were the cries of suffering themselves a source of merit for us?

The Sefarim tell us that the Asara Harugei Malchus were a punishment for the sale of Yosef. But Yosef's brothers asked him for forgiveness? Was he mochel them, and if not why not? And why were there ten martyrs if only nine of the brothers were involved in the sale?

Yosef calls his brothers close and reveals himself to them. Why did he choose the Bris Milah as his proof, when he had proof that he spoke Lashon Hakodesh and knew the true story of the sale? How was it a good proof, didn't he force all the Egyptians to circumcise themselves?

After all these years, Yosef was able to rise to power, marry, and have two sons. He named them with names that symbolize this ability to forget his troubles and be happy with what he had built. Was that all positive, or were there negative components?

Chazal say that Yaakov wanted to sit in tranquility at this point, after dealing with Eisav, Lavan, Shechem. Hashem said Tzadikim have tranquility in the next world, they should ask for it in this world? Is there something wrong with having a tranquil life? Wouldn't Yaakov only want this for Torah and Ruchniyus, what would be wrong with this desire? Some approaches to understanding a difficult Chazal

We find Yaakov humbling himself before Eisav, and bowing seven times. Yet we also know that one is forbidden to flatter a wicked person. Exploring the balance Yaakov strikes in his appeasement of Eisav.

When Yaakov met Rochel, he assured her Lavan wouldn't outsmart him. He said he could be his brother in trickery. How could Yaakov the Ish Emes expect to match the one Chazal call the father of trickery? If he said he could match, how come in the end he wasn't successful and Lavan beat him?

My own idea this week, dating back to my years in Yeshiva. How could it be a zechus for Avraham to lose five years of life to avoid seeing Eisav go LTarbus Raah? Especially in light of Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz's chiddushim in the preciousness of life?

While praying on behalf of Sedom, Avraham compares himself to dust and ashes in his humility before Hashem. The Gemara says some amazing ideas about the long term significance of this statement, and how it compares to other statements of humility in Tanach. Also discuss the classic Rav Yaakov Emden story about humility before Hashem and humility before people.

Chazal tell us Avraham's actions towards the Melachim were zechusim that brought benefits in the Midbar, and that will bring benefits in the times of Mashiach. Why was the story with the Melachim a greater source of zechusin than all his earlier actions. Why is Hachnasas Orchim such a tremendous Mitzvah? Was Avraham the tallest person who ever lived?
