Exploring ‘World on a Wire’: Fassbinder’s Sci-Fi Masterpiece | Jonathan Cessa | McFly's Movie House #011

Season 1 · Episode 11

lundi 17 juin 2024Duration 51:14

Rainer Werner Fassbinder's World on a Wire (1973) stands as a groundbreaking piece in sci-fi cinema, merging the director's distinctive style with futuristic themes. This two-part television miniseries, adapted from Daniel F. Galouye's novel Simulacron-3, explores the concept of simulated reality and artificial intelligence. Fassbinder's innovative narrative techniques and visual flair contribute to the film's significance in the sci-fi genre, prefiguring later works like The Matrix and Blade Runner. World on a Wire engages with philosophical questions about the nature of existence within a simulated world, solidifying Fassbinder's legacy as a visionary filmmaker who pushed the boundaries of storytelling, aesthetics, and thematic exploration in science fiction.

Jonathan and I will be breaking down the film, talking about its influence on the genre, along with movies that served as inspiration for it.

lundi 10 juin 2024Duration 55:44

Eric Rohmer, a leading figure in the French New Wave, crafted a cinematic legacy marked by his unique exploration of morality and relationships. His Six Moral Tales, a series of films from 1962 to 1972, form a cohesive narrative exploring the intricacies of human behaviour and ethical dilemmas. Linked by a common theme, each film delves into the complexities of desire, fidelity, and the consequences of one's actions. From My Night at Maud's to Claire's Knee, Rohmer weaves together a tapestry of interconnected characters and subtle philosophical inquiries. The overarching message in the Six Moral Tales lies in examining personal choices and the moral quandaries that arise, revealing Rohmer's keen insight into the human condition and his ability to capture the nuances of romantic and moral dilemmas with finesse.

Mastering Suspense: Hitchcock’s Bomb Theory Explained | Raiders of the Lost Podcast | McFly's Movie House #009

Season 1 · Episode 9

lundi 3 juin 2024Duration 53:39

Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense, revolutionized filmmaking with his innovative storytelling techniques. Among his many contributions is the "Bomb Theory" analogy, where he explained the difference between suspense and surprise. Hitchcock likened a bomb under a table to a surprise, where it suddenly explodes, eliciting a momentary shock. In contrast, suspense is created by revealing the bomb's presence to the audience while keeping it hidden from the characters, intensifying the anticipation. This analogy encapsulates Hitchcock's mastery of manipulating audience emotions and underscores his profound understanding of the psychology of suspense in filmmaking.

James, Anthony, and I will choose six movies that use this method (three by Hitchcock and three more modern interpretations) and discuss our favourites.

Anthony and James Deveney run the highly successful Raiders of the Lost Podcast while working as filmmakers in the industry. In 2023, they released their short film, Midnight Ruin, and have more projects in the works.

Unveiling Beauty in the Ordinary: Abbas Kiarostami's Genius | Matthew Germenis | McFly's Movie House #008

Season 1 · Episode 8

lundi 27 mai 2024Duration 01:30:42

Abbas Kiarostami's Koker Trilogy, comprising Where Is the Friend's Home? (1987), Life, and Nothing More... (1992), and Through the Olive Trees (1994), hold immense significance in world cinema. Kiarostami intertwines fiction and reality through this trilogy, blurring the lines between documentary and narrative filmmaking. Set against the rural backdrop of Koker in Iran, the trilogy explores themes of resilience, compassion, and the human spirit in the face of adversity. Kiarostami's distinctive approach, characterized by long takes and a poetic visual style, invites viewers to contemplate the essence of life and the intricate connections between the characters and their surroundings. The Koker Trilogy is a testament to Kiarostami’s artistic prowess and ability to capture the universal through the lens of the seemingly ordinary, leaving an enduring impact on contemporary cinema.

Matthew and I will discuss these three films and why they're so powerful. Also included will be Taste of Cherry, another one of his films that, although not part of the trilogy, deserves to be mentioned.

Matthew Germenis is a writer, podcaster, and movie aficionado. He has written extensively on Philip Roth, Wordsworth, and 20th-century American history. Matthew recently worked as an editor for the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies podcast, Public History in a Virtual Age. Bright Wall/Dark Room includes his essay "Hollywood's Last Cowboy" on Leonardo DiCaprio's Westerns. His podcast Visceral Reactions explores the intersection of pop culture, history, and politics throughout the last century of horror movies.

The Swimmer: Frank Perry's Critique of the American Dream | Bryan Starr | McFly's Movie House #004

Season 1 · Episode 4

lundi 29 avril 2024Duration 01:11:12

1968's “The Swimmer,” a bizarre and surreal drama by Frank and Eleanor Perry, is a cross between an Old Hollywood film and a member of Hollywood's New Wave. This Burt Lancaster-starring flick depicts the fading American dream while also illustrating the suppression of reality, the passage of time, and the fear that comes with that.

Bryan Starr is a filmmaker and content creator who is also incredibly interested in movies that tackle the American suburban dream. While he has run Bryan Starr Cinematography for seven years, Bryan started creating content in 2020. Thanks to his film collection of over 3,000 titles, he has built himself up as a leader in the community who champions physical media.
