*Apologies for the publishing a week later than planned, this was due to a technical issue with the recording, I've done what I can to make sure it doesn't sound as terrible as it once did! We'll cover Heidenheim and the Pokal exit when we're back in a fortnight.* Mark, Bas, Conny, Don, & Kyle are back for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Four points was a healthy return from the last two fixtures for the men. A gritty win in Hamburg against St. Pauli followed a stellar performance against Bayern, with a 0.5mm VAR intervention being the difference between winning and drawing. Unfortunately for the women, through no lack of effort, the injuries continue to mount up and the struggles have continued. Which among other results, included an exit from the DFB-Pokal Frauen. This all pales in comparison to our top story, and it won't be the last time you're hearing about it from Don and Kyle! | 61: First Of All, You Say No | 07 Nov 2025 | 01:08:37
Mark, Bas, Conny, & Kyle are back for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Like last time we've got a mixed bag of results for both sides to cover. Progression in the DFB-Pokal for the men, and a great result against the marketing construct for the women were joined by disappointing defeats to Werder Bremen and the injury crisis for the women has somehow got even worse. There's further updates to the stadium plans also. If you want to get in contact with us, Spotify listeners can drop a comment on the episode below. | 52: Parading A Lighter At Half-Time | 02 Apr 2025 | 01:00:18
Mark, Don, Conny & Kyle are in the studio for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. We didn't think we were going to take much from the games against Bayern and Freiburg, how wrong were we? We also look back at the Women's games against Sand and Eintracht Frankfurt II and try to guess what will happen to that lighter. If you want to get in contact with us, Spotify listeners can drop a comment on the episode. The twitter is here, but none of us have checked it in a while for * reasons *. Mark, Bas, Conny & Kyle are in the studio for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg as we look back at a dreadful defeat for Union Berlin at home to Kiel followed by a stunning away win in Frankfurt. We also assess the first Bochum appeal and dream of silverware following the Women's game against Andernach. | 50: UNIONER! | 26 Feb 2025 | 01:25:33
For this special 50th episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg, the usual suspects (Mark, Bas, Don & Kyle) were joined by a couple of very special guests. A familiar voice to many, our stadium announcer Christian Arbeit, Head of Communications at 1. FC Union Berlin and the man behind the tweets and everything else in the English language at the club, Jacob Sweetman. This podcast started in the depths of lockdown, and we look back at the rollercoaster that's happened over these 50 episodes so far. Jacob and Christian share their first Union experiences and some stories along the way. We also get some insight into the plans for the coming years, apt with the recent stadium share issue. If you want to get in contact with us, Spotify listeners can drop a comment on the episode. The twitter is here, but none of us have checked it in a while for * reasons *. Mark, Bas, Don & Kyle are in the virtual studio for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. As the winter transfer window slammed shut, we hit record and even then we didn't know if players were coming or going! We look back at the games against St. Pauli and the marketing construct from Leipzig and look ahead to the next three against SAP, BMG & BVB. Finally, on the back of Steffen Baumgart being described as an 'Union legend' when he was hired as head coach, we disagree and consider who the legends of Union really are. | 47: The Wheels Coming Off | 23 Dec 2024 | 01:00:23
Mark, Bas, Don & Kyle are in the virtual studio for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Recorded a couple of nights after the Bochum home game we wonder where it's all gone wrong as the wheels fall off our season on and off the park. If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here, but recognising that place has gone to the dogs, if you're listening on Spotify you can also drop a comment on the episode below. | 46: Bo Selecta! | 15 Nov 2024 | 01:08:48
Mark, Bas, Don & Kyle are joined by special guest Conny for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. After a rough week with defeat in the Pokal and in Munich, Union Berlin stabilised the ship with a battling 0-0 draw at home to Freiburg. We review those games before taking a deep dive with Conny into the Women's side as they fight for promotion to the Frauen-Bundesliga and continue a heroic cup run! If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here, but recognising that place has gone to the dogs, if you're listening on Spotify you can also drop a comment on the episode below. | 45: The VAR Giveth and The VAR Taketh Away | 29 Oct 2024 | 01:04:44
Mark, Bas, Don & Kyle are back for another episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Two games and four points later we're back to discuss being an offside stud from it being six. As the Union men are next up searching for a win in a place that doesn't exist, we share our favourite Pokal stories, and in the case of Mark, not just the DFB-Pokal. If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here, but recognising that place has gone to the dogs, if you're listening on Spotify you can also drop a comment on the episode below. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening. We'll be back in the international break. UNVEU
| 44: Solid Ideas & Solid Football | 16 Oct 2024 | 01:12:21 | |
Mark, Bas & Kyle are back for another episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Six games in and we're starting to wonder what all the worry was about. We share some thoughts on the games between the international breaks, the incredible start to the season from the Women's side and of course the AGM held at the start of October. Just like last time, it'll probably be quite clear that we recorded this on the first day of the international break and released it at the end again. The turnaround will be quicker next time! If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening.
| 43: Season Preview 2024/25 | 13 Sep 2024 | 00:59:57 | |
A month later than billed, Mark, Bas & Kyle are back for our Season Preview, three games into the season. Happy we're there seemed to be the theme of the summer, be it Union in the Bundesliga, Scotland at the Euros, or Bas & Mark at The Eras Tour. We reflect on the summer that was, a summer of change in and around Union's men's side. We share our thoughts on how that's gone over the first three games and what that holds for the rest of the season. It'll probably be quite clear that we recorded this on the first day of the international break and released it on the last one, hence not mentioning the heroics from the Women's side in the Pokal. We'll cover that next time. Apologies. If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening.
| 60: Something Has To Change | 16 Oct 2025 | 01:32:36 | |
Mark, Bas, Conny, Don, & Kyle are back for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. With a mixed bag of results for both sides, you wouldn't think we would have much to cover. However in one of our longest episodes to date we instead take time to discuss properly some topics that have occupied our thoughts recently. With a discussion on the condensed calendar in the Frauen-Bundesliga, and the potential links such a congested format has to injuries like Union are currently experiencing. This is followed up with a discussion on the recent update to the Stadion An Der Alten Försterei expansion plans. The ACL Women's Football Club referenced in the episode can be found here. If you want to get in contact with us, Spotify listeners can drop a comment on the episode. The twitter is here, but none of us have checked it in a while for * reasons *. | 42: Season Review 2023/24 | 27 May 2024 | 00:59:36
Wilson, Don, Bas, Mark, & Kyle chose to reconvene one last time this season instead of watching the 1./2. Bundesliga Relegation play-off for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. We look back at the season that was. The highs and lows of a rollercoaster no one could imagine at the beginning of the season. February's Tor des Monats from Paulina Krumbiegel that Mark mentioned can be viewed here (Germany only), and the nominees for April's Kacktor des Monats are here (worldwide). If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening. See you in August!

Wilson, Don, Bas, Mark, & Kyle are joined by Dave from the 'Union Berlin in the U.K & Ireland' Facebook fan group for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Klassenerhalt. 1. FC Union Berlin managed to retain their Bundesliga status on goal difference thanks to a 2-1 win over SC Freiburg and results going our way elsewhere. Dave and Kyle give their view from the island, whilst the rest of the crew were at the game and share their feelings from the terraces. We are also joined towards the end of the episode by Jacob Sweetman from 1. FC Union Berlin to talk about all things women's football at Union. They've had an incredible season so far, having won a league and cup double this season and they have a 2. Frauen-Bundesliga playoff to come. | 40: Sleepwalking | 13 May 2024 | 00:53:22
Wilson, Don, Bas, Mark, & Kyle are in the studio for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. The new manager bounce lasted about 40 minutes, as 1. FC Union Berlin managed to turn a 2-0 lead away to Köln into a 3-2 defeat. With one final league fixture at home to Europe-chasing SC Freiburg ahead, other than black pudding soup what comes next? We also look back at goalkeepers from our 2004/2005 Regionalliga Nord season, and manage to relate the film La Haine to Union. If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. | 39: Sacked at Half-Time | 06 May 2024 | 01:05:51
Wilson, Don, Bas, Mark, & Kyle are in the studio a week earlier than scheduled for this emergency episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg following the sacking earlier today of 1. FC Union Berlin head coach Nenad Bjelica. We ask how we've ended up in this position and try to look for positives ahead for the final two games of the season and the future that follows. | 36: Black Pudding Soup | 27 Mar 2024 | 00:47:29
It's Wilson, Mark & Kyle in the studio for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Like many this season (but hopefully not Scotland on June 23rd - Kyle) Union lost in Stuttgart, however the team bounced back with a superb win against Werder Bremen. We discuss those games, Kyle sheds a tear over Jakub Busk and we look ahead to a tricky run of fixtures over the coming weeks. If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening.

Wilson, Mark, Bas, & Kyle are in the studio for this episode of Mattuschka’s Right Peg. We kick off looking back at the games against Hoffenheim, Heidenheim and Dortmund. | 34: The Croatian Neil Warnock | 13 Feb 2024 | 00:52:25
Wilson, Mark, Cherrie, Don, & Kyle are in the studio for this episode of Mattuschka’s Right Peg. Another month has gone, and things appear to be looking up, despite having no right-backs, with our coach settling things on the pitch and starting fights with opposition players off it. We chat about the month that was Union, on and off the park and look ahead to a massive fortnight in the context of this season. If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening. UNVEU
| 33: Nine Large Beers and a Rum and Coke | 09 Jan 2024 | 01:14:31 | |
Mark, Bas, Don, & Kyle are in the studio for this episode of Mattuschka’s Right Peg. After a hiatus partly down to events following the Real Madrid game (we discuss within), we cover the last nearly two months of all things 1. FC Union Berlin. Finally scoring a goal and then some points in the Bundesliga, hiring Nenad Bjelica, finally winning a game of football, that Real Madrid game and managing to win another game of football too. We also take stock as to where we’re at just now, what we need in January and look ahead to our first fixtures following the winter break. If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening. UNVEU
| 59: Where Has This Been? | 28 Sep 2025 | 00:56:49 | |
Mark, Bas, Conny, & Kyle are back for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Most of us predicted three points for the men last time out, just not in the manner it occurred. We look back at the home defeat to Hoffenheim and the spectacular away win in Frankfurt. The women also got their season underway with 4 games in 10 days. We try to make sense of the start and how the women are adapting to the step up in the top flight. If you want to get in contact with us, Spotify listeners can drop a comment on the episode. The twitter is here, but none of us have checked it in a while for * reasons *. Whilst we get around to sorting out a Bluesky account, you can contact producer/contributor Kyle on Bluesky here. | 32: Urs Fischer, Fußballgott! | 16 Nov 2023 | 01:28:22
Wilson, Mark, Bas, Don, & Kyle are in the studio for this episode of Mattuschka’s Right Peg. Urs Fischer is no longer head coach of 1. FC Union Berlin, with a departure mutually agreed following the well spoken about poor run of form. We react to the news, ask where we go from here, and reminisce about the most incredible journey Urs took us on since joining the club in 2018. If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening. UNVEU
| 31: Therapy | 02 Nov 2023 | 01:04:58 | |
Wilson, Mark, Bas, Don, Cherrie & Kyle are in the studio for this episode (or therapy session) of Mattuschka’s Right Peg. We’ve been away since the international break and in the four games since, not much has changed. Union are still losing games, and now we’re out of the DFB-Pokal so we try to look at where things have gone so wrong, and how we might emerge from this funk. We’ll be back after the game against Leverkusen, and hopefully we’ll have something to cheer about! If you want to get in contact with us, the best place to do so is here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro and to you for listening. UNVEU

Stuart has been writing about Union in the Champions League this season, and gives a fascinating insight into his experiences in his time with the club this season. Mark, Bas and Kyle were at the Alte Försterei and Olympiastadion last Tuesday for the Youth League and Champions League double-header against Braga. | 27: ¡Viviremos Para Siempre! | 19 Sep 2023 | 01:06:16
The episode title is the penultimate line of our club hymn in Spanish. Given the subject matter, it felt most apt. Wir werden ewig leben. We will live forever. Wilson, Bas, Mark, & Kyle are finally joined by Cherrie for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. We talk about the 2-1 defeat in Wolfsburg and look ahead to our historic first Champions League game in the club's history away to record champions Real Madrid. We end the podcast talking about a man that meant so much to Union and the Unioner among many others. Matti Michalke passed away on August 18th after a serious illness. A memorial service for Matti was held at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei last Sunday. Bas shares his thoughts from the service and gives us a glimpse into the impact Matti had in his incredible life. Bas' book 'Abnormaal Gewoon – Een Nederlander Verklaart Union Berlin' (Abnormally Normal - A Dutchman Explains Union Berlin) is out now. Wilson, Bas, Mark, Don, & Kyle are back for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. Not to be left out from our season preview Wilson and Bas give us their predictions for the season (is it cheating if it's after the first couple of matchdays?). We also look back at our opening games and look ahead to our next two fixtures. Bas also talks about his new book 'Abnormaal Gewoon – Een Nederlander Verklaart Union Berlin' (Abnormally Normal - A Dutchman Explains Union Berlin) which is published on Thursday. | 58: Football Deutschland | 10 Sep 2025 | 01:06:54
Mark, Bas, Conny, Don & Kyle are back for this episode of Mattuschka's Right Peg. The Bundesliga is hopefully entering its 'Football Italia' era in the UK with games now being aired on council telly via the BBC. We talk the unusual UK&I TV deal for the Bundesliga before reviewing the win against Stuttgart and yet another defeat at the hands of Serhou Guirassy in Dortmund. We also look ahead to the Women's season, which kicked off over the weekend. There's been a lot of change at the club over the summer, and we do our best to make sense of it all. Following recording last week, we were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Silvio, who was a cherished member of Conny's Union fan club 'Grenzenlos Eisern' and our good international friends 'Union de Hierro' . There is a gofundme set up to help his family with repatriation and funeral costs. If you can spare anything, it would be greatly appreciated. You can read the BBC article mentioned in the episode here and the Sky Sports article here. If you want to get in contact with us, Spotify listeners can drop a comment on the episode. The twitter is here, but none of us have checked it in a while for * reasons *. Whilst we get around to sorting out a Bluesky account, you can contact producer/contributor Kyle on Bluesky here. | 18: INTERNATIONAL! | 04 Jun 2021 | 01:20:11
Wilson, Mark, Bas & Kyle are back to reflect on the most incredible of afternoons as Union Berlin qualified for European football in the most incredible fashion. We cover events outside the ground after the game, with insights as to what it was like on the ground. Kyle introduces us to the "2. Bundesliga of European football" in the UEFA Europa Conference League, and we speculate ahead to how the team may look next season. Mark, Bas, Conny, Don & Kyle are back for our 6th season of Mattuschka's Right Peg. After a short summer and a less than convincing pre-season 1. FC Union Berlin are about to kick off their 7th season in the Bundesliga. We briefly look back at another trip to Gütersloh, only this time for the men, in the DFB-Pokal and look ahead to Stuttgart and Dortmund as well as the season as a whole. We'll preview the season ahead for the women's side next time as they don't kick off for a few weeks yet. However if you happen to be around the Birmingham area, they have a pre-season friendly against Aston Villa at Walsall's ground on 30 August. Tickets are a fiver and are available here. If you want to get in contact with us, Spotify listeners can drop a comment on the episode. The twitter is here, but none of us have checked it in a while for * reasons *. Whilst we get around to sorting out a Bluesky account, you can contact producer/contributor Kyle on Bluesky here. Thanks as always to Die Wallerts for the intro, to you for listening! UNVEU

In the last segment we're joined by Jon Darch (@SafeStandingRS on twitter) to review the recent annual general meeting. Thanks to Jon for coming on. If you wish to get in contact with us, you can @unioninenglisch on twitter or podcast@union-berlin.com Thanks again to Die Wallerts for the music and to you for listening!
