00:30:39
Welcome back to the first podcast interview for 2024!
In this podcast, I chat with Alex Bovee, CEO of ConductorOne, a firm dedicated to modernising how organisations manage access to their vital systems and data.
In my experience, most organisations struggle with getting their access controls right - trying to navigate the fine line between being too restrictive and impacting business efficiency and too open and putting systems and data at risk.
Alex shares his insights into the problem and how Conductor One have developed a platform that addresses this problem that has been around since the first computer password!

MRM - Episode 79: 2023 Year in Review
27 Dec 2023
00:26:59
In this final episode for 2023, I take a look back at the guests that have appeared on the show this year as well as recapping the Podcast Chats which were launched in January.
Also, I share the shows statistics for 2023 - and am most grateful for you the listener getting us into the top 25% of podcasts on Buzzsprout!
I trust you and yours have had a wonderful festive season thus far and, like I, are looking forward to a wonderful 2024!
We'll return with our first interview for 2024 in the last week in January.
My discussion this episode is with Brittany Allen, Trust & Safety Architect at Sift and delves into the challenges of protecting us all as we live our online lives.
Brittany is incredibly experienced in battling e-commerce fraud and is often consulted as a key source by major publications such as Fortune, Fast Company, Bloomberg, The Hill and Forbes.
Her current role entails developing industry best practices and strategies and educating individuals and companies like on trust and safety in an increasingly online world.
So, if you worry about online fraud, credit card fraud, spam and scam activities or even worse, have uttered the phrase 'I've been hacked', then this episode is a must listen.
In this discussion, Anthony Wilson and Brett Palmer discuss what good reporting looks like for Executives and Directors of organisations.
Clearly there are regulatory requirements that Senior Management and Boards must meet and that must be supported by robust Risk Management reporting. The trick is always getting the balance right - too much detail is just as bad as too little.
When reporting to these groups, materiality is key - the Board and the Executive need to be hearing about the Material risks, the effectiveness of the controls and progress on any actions.
One of the biggest drivers for being effective with your reporting is to assist in key decision making. Armed with an effective and thorough risk assessment, decisions can be made about which opportunities to pursue, which projects to activate and which threats to treat.
This is a great listen for those that find it a challenge to get their Risk Management reporting right or for those that want to benchmark their current reporting regime.
In this podcast chat, Anthony Wilson and Brett Palmer talk about the critical link between Risk Management and Corporate Governance.
In short, to be an effective and sustainable organisation, one can't exist without the other. And this applies whether it's a Private, Public, Not-For-Profit or Government entity.
Firstly, Risk Management needs the imprimatur and indeed mandate of the Board - clearly articulating to Management and the organisation as a whole, its expectations in this regard.
Secondly, those charged with the governance of the organisation, the Board of Directors, need a robust and recognised process for evaluating opportunities and initiatives as well as threats to the achievement of objectives (collectively, the risks).
When working well, with clear and regular communication, governance activities are much improved, and Risk Management is even more effective!
Hope you enjoy this episode - look forward to your thoughts / feedback.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM - Episode 75: Tim Weiss, CEO of Optera
26 Oct 2023
00:33:57
A must listen episode for all Senior Executives and Directors!
In this discussion, Tim Weiss describes the challenges (and solutions) that organisations are facing in respect to Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) requirements that are becoming even more 'front and centre' in the list of priorities.
ESG represents a classic risk - with both threats and opportunities for organisations that take the time to do a thorough and appropriate risk assessment.
One of the big challenges for organisations is understanding their carbon emissions - not just those directly incurred in conducting its business (Scope 1) but also those generated by its consumption of energy (Scope 2) and the emissions generated up and down the value chain (Scope 3). This is where Optera can assist.
Find out more by listening to this fascinating discussion!

Episode 74: Podcast chat - Conducting a Risk Management Gap Analysis
12 Oct 2023
00:18:06
In this episode, Brett and I discuss the Risk Management Gap Analysis - what it is, how you go about it, what are the key focus areas and why all organisations need to do it periodically.
The key takeaway is that this is not putting a specific risk under the microscope but actually reviewing the Risk Management Program itself and comparing how its performing compared to the ambitions you set for the program.
If you aren't achieving all you were hoping to out of your Risk Management Program, this is the episode for you!
As always, we welcome your feedback on the episode, the podcast generally or on broader risk topics that you'd like us to discuss in the program.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM Episode 73 - Darren Gallop
05 Oct 2023
00:34:01

Darren started his career as a professional musician touring with his band(s) throughout Canada. That experience fueled an interest in the music’s business side, leading him to found his own record label, and eventually Marcato, a successful startup whose innovative technology platform was used to manage music and cultural events around the world prior to its acquisition.

Darren has since also become a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM).
This combination of creativity, business acumen, genuine interest in security and privacy, and entrepreneurial spirit underpins Carbide’s culture of innovation.

MRM Episode 90 - Aaron Painter
06 Aug 2024
00:41:46
Knowing who has access to your systems and that they have the right level of access is a key tenant of good cybersecurity hygiene. The challenge is that users forget their passwords or can't navigate the multifactor authentication (MFA) process - meaning a call to the Help Desk.
CEO of Nametag Inc, Aaron Painter talks to us about how organisations can save time, improve customer & employee satisfaction and enable the Help Desk to focus on key systems issues. The secret - utilising the technology we all have in our hands these days - our mobile phone!
Aaron talks us through the process (in plain English!) that Nametag has developed to make this time consuming and sometimes very frustrating verification task a thing of the past.
But don't take my word for it - have a look at their website and the demonstration videos - link is here.
This is a game changer for identity management - if your IT team are not listeners of the program, point them to this episode - they will thank you for it!

Podcast Chat - How low do you go? Episode 72
14 Aug 2023
00:11:44
This episode of the Mastering Risk Management Podcast Chats addresses a common misunderstanding we see when talking to organisations that have reached the stage of making a decision as a result of their risk analysis / evaluation.
Do we accept the risk, treat the risk, transfer the risk or not proceed with the activity that could see the risk eventuate (i.e. reject the risk)?
One of the issues we commonly see if the misconception that for risk management to be deemed successful, every risk has to be reduced to the lowest possible level. This is not only not true, but it is also not feasible.
Have a listen to this episode to discover why and what you need to take into account when making the decision to treat a risk (or not).
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
Podcast Chat - Project Risk Management Episode 70
14 Aug 2023
00:17:45
In this episode, Anthony and Brett discuss how to manage risk in projects - be they big or small!
Regardless of size, projects or programs have some very similar 'core' risks - making them ideal for using historical project performance to inform the risk identification process of the new project.
We discuss the key elements organisations need to consider when managing project risk, whether the organisation is a frequent executor or projects or whether they only arise periodically.
We hope this episode helps refine your project risk management outcomes!

MRM Episode 69 - Dr Alan D Thompson and AI
31 Jul 2023
01:07:26
This would have to be one of the most fascinating conversations to date in the Mastering Risk Management podcast!
Alan usually gives interviews to the likes of CNN, the BBC and Al Jazeera so to get him on the podcast is a real win for our listeners. And the conversation is well worth the listen.
Alan takes us on a journey of what Artificial Intelligence is, how it's being deployed and why we all need to get involved. AI is a defining moment in our history and to not be a part of it risks being left behind.
I ask Alan a question in the chat which I think would be on many people's minds - how do I get started with AI? His response was so simple and to the point - he said 'who trained you on Facebook or LinkedIn? Just get in and have a go!'
I'd strongly encourage you to invest in your future and take the time to listen to this episode - I am sure you will not regret it!
Your thoughts and feedback are always welcome. Enjoy!

MRM Podcast Chat - Episode 68: Risk and Insurance
11 Jul 2023
00:14:41
In this episode of the podcast chats, Anthony and Brett discuss the link between a risk management and insurance.
Whilst having a robust risk management program is about more than just saving money (achieving the business objectives anyone?), when it comes to securing the right insurance at the best value, it adds significant value.
Listen to the episode to hear how!
As always, we appreciate your feedback and suggestions for guests to interview or subjects to discuss in the podcast chats.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM - Episode 67: Garret Grajek
29 Jun 2023
00:33:08
This episode is another must listen for those wanting to ensure they are putting in place the right controls to secure both business and personal data. My guest is Garret Grajek, President and CEO of YouAttest, a cloud-based access review engine that provides identity and security compliance for all resources.
We discuss how failing to manage systems access is one of the fundamental mistakes organisations can make yet is one of the easiest to fix.
Garret challenges us to reflect on our organisations Identity Governance by asking ourselves the following questions:
Who has access to our systems?
Do they have the right level of access?
Can you certify / attest that this access information is current and accurate?
If you can't answer these questions, or you are unsure about any of them, have a listen to this episode - you'll get some great insight in how to manage this fundamental cybersecurity requirement.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM Podcast chat - Episode 66 Critical Controls
13 Jun 2023
00:12:26
In today's chat, Brett and I discuss the importance of controls in risk management - and specifically, critical controls.
These are the controls that if missing or ineffective, will almost certainly lead to the risk eventuating, or if a mitigating control, the consequences being worse than they needed to be.
Key to having a great control environment is providing assurance that the controls are in place and effective - for some critical controls, such as the Business Resilience arrangements for the organisation, this is best tested using facilitated exercises / scenarios.
Enjoy this episode and don't forget to keep submitting your ideas for future podcast chats, or guest interviews via the ABM Risk Partnership website.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM Episode 65 - Paul Valente
01 Jun 2023
00:37:30
We hear about it happening all the time. An organisation that seems to have a robust approach to protecting its systems and data is compromised by cyber criminals using a third-party vendor as the attack vector.
My guest on this episode is Paul Valente, CEO and co-founder of VISO Trust, an AI powered third party risk platform that aids IT Security teams access risk intelligence on an organisations third party vendors.
Paul is well qualified to speak on the subject - he holds multiple industry designations including Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Systems Manager (CISM) and ISO27001 Lead Implementer.
He also has over 20 years of experience in technology, financial services, e-commerce and information security innovation. What's particularly great is that Paul speaks plain English when discussing information security!
I'm sure you'll find this episode extremely valuable, whether you're in the IT space or as a risk professional wanting to know more about protecting your business.
You can contact Paul at paul@visotrust.com or alternatively, visit the Viso Trust website at www.visotrust.com - they can even organise a demo!

MRM Podcast Chat: Risk Management Frameworks
17 May 2023
00:20:31
In this chat, Brett and Anthony discuss the sometimes-confusing topic of Risk Management Frameworks. They have seen organisations where the RMF is a single document of hundreds of pages - so big in fact that it is practically useless to employees looking for guidance.
The ABM Risk approach to RMF's is different - pragmatic, practical and importantly, bespoke to the needs of the organisation.
You also hear, if you didn't already know, that paper and PDF based RMF's are history.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM Episode 63 - Dr Patrick Scolyer-Gray
04 May 2023
01:01:06
There has been a lot of talk lately on the best approach to mitigating the risk of cyber-attack - including on this podcast. My guest in this episode has a very different take on how best to defend an organisation from this incessant risk.
Having recently published his first monograph, Dr Patrick Scolyer-Gray’s career has been devoted primarily to the design, development and implementation of Human-Centric Cybersecurity (HCCS), a methodological framework that extends and improves upon the conventional techno-centric ‘layered’ approach to cybersecurity.
In his current role, Patrick leads the Human-Centric Cybersecurity (HCCS) consulting practice at the Expert Management Agency (EMA) 460degrees. Throughout his career, Patrick has maintained that the key to achieving a stronger security posture lies not in technology, but instead in social and cognitive elements, such as culture, decision-making and behaviour.
This is a fascinating discussion and a must listen for those that want to understand another critical element to cyber defense.

MRM Episode 89 - John Pabon
16 Jul 2024
00:36:52
What are you and your organisation doing to save the Earth?
It's a confronting question but one that my guest, John Pabon, has spent his life studying and then implementing change to make sustainability not only an ethical way forward for organisations, but also a commercially sensible one.
This is a fascinating discussion - John has advised companies, governments, and even individuals on how to capitalise on the benefits sustainability offers. He not only worked with the United Nations but continues to advise them to this day.
This has seen him work across the globe, including a 10-year stint in China. He is also the author of two books, the Chair of The Conference Board's Asia Sustainability Leaders Council and serves on the board of advisers to the U.S. Green Chamber of Commerce.
John's website is here - check it out for further details on his writing, speaking and consulting.

MRM - Episode 61 - Nigel Phair
06 Apr 2023
00:48:01
This discussion will be of interest to all leaders, not just those in risk management. As recent events around the world have shown, the spectre of cyber security incidents haunts almost every organisation and manifests itself in way too many others.
My guest for this chat is Nigel Phair - technologist, advisor, academic and company director. Nigel's deep expertise in cyber security has seen him in high demand by boards and executives looking to take decisive action to protect themselves from attack.
Nigel is also a regular presence in the media, helping people understand how they can take steps to protect themselves and their data from these attacks. He is the author of three books on the international impact of cybercrime - well informed by his over 20 years of service in the Australian Federal Police rising to the rank of Detective Superintendent in the Australian High Tech Crime Centre.
This is a must listen episode for individuals and organisations wishing to shore up their defenses against this ever-present threat.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM - Episode 59 - Matt Phillips
01 Mar 2023
00:42:58
My guest for this episode is a little different from previous guests. Matt Phillips is the Founder and CEO of Matt Phillips Coaching and as a former professional baseball player in Austria’s Bundesliga (first league) and Division-1 baseball player in the United States, he realized that peak performance requires a dominant “inner game”.
Matt has taken his learnings and turned it into the High Performance Leadership Program and over the last 10 years has worked with leading organisations to help them transform.
As leaders in the risk management discipline, this chat with Matt might just be what you need to take your effectiveness to the next level!
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM - Episode 58 - Alex Sidorenko
22 Feb 2023
00:41:40
I'm releasing this episode 'out of sync' as Alex is visiting Australia in late February / early March and our Australian listeners have this chance to hear Alex's views on risk management. He'll be hosted by the RMIA on the 28th February in Perth and 7th March in Melbourne - see the RMIA website for details.
Alex is often referred to as 'the most controversial person in risk management' due to his outspoken and unwavering views on what risk management is and isn't. My aim in creating this podcast was to get a variety of opinions and experiences through our guests, so whilst many will disagree with him, it is good to hear alternative views.
Personally, and as is the case with ABM Risk Partnership, we take a balanced view - there are aspects of what Alex calls RM1 that are applicable and very useful, especially for organisations starting the journey. Likewise, quantification of risks (Alex's RM2) is equally important for those Material risks to the organisation.
Alex has a host of materials available so you can make up your own mind - see the links below:

MRM Episode 62 - Podcast Chat: Resourcing and Reporting lines for risk
27 Jan 2023
00:18:41
One of the most frequently asked questions we get is where should the organisation's risk resource report? The answer, like most things related to risk management, is that there isn't a 'one size fits all' answer.
Reporting lines for risk really need to be bespoke to the organisation, its culture, the maturity of its risk function and a myriad of other factors - listen to the episode for more detail.
We also touch on some of the challenges organisations have in resourcing the risk function and we talk about some alternatives.
Please let us know what you think of the Podcast Chats and what subjects you'd like us to discuss in future.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM Episode 60 - Podcast Chat: Opportunities and Threats
27 Jan 2023
00:10:37
As you'll hear in this chat, Brett and Anthony dispel the myth that risk management is all about negatives or things that can threaten the organisation's future.
Indeed, if that is the approach of your risk function, then they are only doing half the job!
Risk management, done well, is about enabling the organisation to take more, smart risks. In fact, if organisations don't take risks, they will quickly cease to exist or become irrelevant in their industry.
We'll talk about the techniques we use to help organisations understand both the threats and the opportunities.
Enjoy the listen and get in touch if you have a subject you'd like us to cover in a future episode of Podcast Chats.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!
MRM Episode 57 - Podcast Chat: What is Risk Management?
27 Jan 2023
00:11:05
In this episode, Brett and Anthony start at the beginning and discuss what risk management is (and isn't) and why its so important for an organisation's future.
They talk about some of the common misunderstandings about risk management, and provide clarity on what good looks like.
There is also a discussion about what role different people across the organisation play in risk management (hint: everyone manages risk!).
Hope you enjoy the episode and don't forget to touch base with us if you'd like us to cover a particular topic in the Podcast Chat segment.
Thanks for listening to the show and please keep your guest suggestions coming!

MRM Episode 52 - Greg Edwards
15 Nov 2022
00:24:57
This conversation is a must for any business that could be subject to a ransomware attack - that is, almost every organisation! The discussion is with Greg Edwards who has been a technology entrepreneur since 1998. Before Greg founded Canauri, re-branded since our interview from Cryptostopper, he started Axis Backup, a backup and disaster recovery company for the insurance industry. He saw firsthand the rapid increase in the damage cyber criminals were doing with debilitating malware resulting in high financial loss to vulnerable companies. Between 2012 and 2015, one in five of Axis Backup’s clients was hit by cybercrime. Greg realized effective cyber security could save businesses from costly downtime and compromised systems. In 2015, Axis Backup was acquired by J2 Global, freeing Greg to create Canauri and focus exclusively on cybersecurity. Canauri's services are available throughout the world through a network of partners - visit the Canauri website for more information: www.canauri.com

MRM - Episode 51 - Andrew Wilson
25 Oct 2022
00:30:00
In this discussion, I chat with Andrew Wilson the Chief Financial Officer of Funlab. You may not have heard of Funlab but most of you, in Australia and New Zealand at least, will have visited one of their venues.

I'm thrilled to release this, our 50th episode in the Mastering Risk Management podcast!
And with a special occasion such as this comes another special guest, Mick McCormack.
Having led APA Group from start up to ASX market darling, Mick McCormack is a proven corporate leader. Moving from the C-Suite to the Board room Mick now plays a key role as NED of Austal, and Origin Energy, and as Chair of Central Petroleum.
Seen as a knock about sort of bloke Mick shouldn’t be under-estimated. He demonstrates a deep understanding of Risk Management, and Governance more broadly. Known for saying it the way he sees it, his track record suggests he usually sees it right.
No hidden agenda, you always know where you stand with Mick.
Mick referred to the Clontarf Foundation and the wonderful work it does with indigenous youth. Please find the link below and consider supporting this great organisation: https://clontarf.org.au/

MRM Episode 49 - Dan Draper
15 Aug 2022
00:30:41
My discussion in this episode is with Dan Draper, and whilst the discussion is about an exciting new technology, it is not technically challenging.
Dan is the CEO and Founder of CipherStash, a Sydney based data security startup building a searchable encrypted data storage platform for sensitive data.
Like many in the tech industry, Dan grew tired of hearing about data-breach after data-breach in the news and developed an interest in searchable encryption technology. After taking Professor Dan Boneh's Stanford Cryptography course, Dan spent the next 3 years researching how to apply searchable encryption techniques to practical databases and search indexes. The result: an entirely new way of storing data that no longer trades security for utility.
If your organisation is comfortable about its approach to encrypting data, you might want to re-think that after listening to this episode!

MRM - Episode 48: Davina Stanley
12 Jul 2022
00:38:00
One of the core competencies for a successful risk executive is the ability to communicate - regularly, effectively and concisely.
My guest on this episode, Davina Stanley - Managing Director of Clarity Thought Partners, is an expert at getting cut through no matter who is the target audience for you communication.
Having taken part in Davina's training myself, I can attest to its effectiveness and practicality. This is an investment that all risk managers should make in themselves and their teams.
A catch cry of the program is 'anyone can make the simple complicated'. Ask yourself - how do your communications with the board, senior executives and other stakeholders resonate?
