TDW Minutes 36-40: Occam’s Prison Break08 Sep 202500:39:33
This week, we journey into the bowels of Asgardian incarceration, where the god of mischief gets a visit—well, a projectional visit—from mom. These minutes give us Tom Hiddleston doing what he does best: delivering actual character development in a movie otherwise stuffed with particle effects and narrative chaos. Yes, Loki has a heart. Yes, it’s hidden under layers of smug, snark, and abandonment issues. And yes, you still probably want to give him a hug and a lie detector test.Meanwhile, the dark elves unleash their secret weapon—Curse, who is part berserker, part Pokémon evolution, and fully incapable of getting through Asgardian security without the help of a very stupid prison system. Loki may or may not help him escape, because this movie loves ambiguity more than it loves narrative clarity. Was that projection of Frigga in Loki’s cell real or not? Matthew and Pete have a surprisingly intense debate about it that ends in what can only be described as academic yelling. Also: Natalie Portman flirts with galactic metaphysics, Curse goes beast mode, and Pete tries valiantly to remember a single Rene Russo performance besides Lethal Weapon 4. Spoiler: The Thomas Crown Affair is right there. If you want to hear these conversations unfold in real-time, join the Marvel Movie Minute community at trustory.fm/join, where members get early access, invitations to live stream recordings, and other bonus content.Film Sundries

TDW Minutes 31-35: The Analogical Goat01 Sep 202500:41:16
This week on the podcast, we barrel headfirst into the mythology dump. It’s minutes 31–35 of Thor: The Dark World, where Odin dusts off the Book of Yggdrasil and delivers a firehose of exposition like a cosmic prof with tenure. Jane gets an MRI in the Soul Forge (no copay required), Odin does his best impression of your friend’s judgmental dad, and we finally learn that the Aether is a gooey, parasitic relic born of darkness, which feels right.Matthew and Pete wrestle with the theological implications of Odin’s prophecy game, the epistemology of unreliable narrators, and whether Malekith invented the Aether or just slapped a label on a pre-existing cosmic fluid like some sort of interstellar influencer with a fancy new collab. There’s an unexpectedly sincere defense of exposition! There’s analogies! There’s goat metaphors! And there’s the haunting realization that the dark elves are both mythological horrors and also… spaceship guys? Pick a lane, Malekith.Oh, and in a rare MCU crossover moment, we remember that the Book of Yggdrasil was last seen by none other than Johann “Red Skull” Schmidt, which means this movie might—might—actually be playing 4D chess with canon. Probably not. But maybe. Maybe? If you want to hear these conversations unfold in real-time, join the Marvel Movie Minute community at trustory.fm/join, where members get early access, invitations to live stream recordings, and other bonus content.Film Sundries

IM3 Minutes 121-125: And That's All He Wrote (While Bruce Slept)30 Jun 202500:49:25
Can You Dig It? (Yes, We Can)
Minutes 121-125The finale of Iron Man 3 delivers one of the MCU's most spectacular end credit sequences, followed by a surprise revelation about Tony's narration. Rob and Kyle explore these closing moments with particular enthusiasm for Brian Tyler's jazzy score and Prologue's stunning animation work.Breaking Down Iron Man 3's Grand FinaleThe hosts dive deep into the innovative end credits sequence, which masterfully combines clips from all three Iron Man films with dynamic typography and animation. They discuss how this sequence serves as both a celebration and a farewell to the trilogy, while debating some curious omissions like Black Widow and Nick Fury. The conversation then shifts to the surprising post-credits scene featuring Bruce Banner, which contextualizes Tony's narration throughout the film.Looking Back at the Legacy of Iron Man 3Rob and Kyle reflect on their journey through the film, acknowledging that while their opinions have evolved, certain elements stand out as particularly strong. They praise Don Cheadle's performance as Rhodey, debate Guy Pearce's effectiveness as Killian, and ponder missed opportunities with characters like Harley Keener. Furthermore, they explore how Iron Man 3 represents a crucial turning point for the MCU as the first post-Avengers film.As the final chapter in the Iron Man trilogy, these closing minutes encapsulate everything that made these films special — from Robert Downey Jr.'s charismatic performance to the franchise's signature blend of action, humor, and heart — while setting the stage for the MCU's future phases.

TA080: Awkward Choke Hold26 May 202300:28:46
Minute Eighty: From Thor Trying a Choke Hold on Hulk to The Young SHIELD Pilot Dropping into PositionJason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’, joins us in this episode!
In the Eightieth minute of The Avengers...We start this minute with some awkward shots of Thor and Hulk fighting. Is that because of the shot construction trying to make room for the CG Hulk? We’re not sure, but it certainly stands out.
From there, we go to the bridge, just in time for a grenade to land, throwing Agent Hill back. Fury takes out two of Barton’s mercenaries, which sets us off on our tracking of the various operatives to see if there truly are just seven. We also debate if Nick is truly the best super spy as well as the best helicarrier pilot, or if he’s actually quite mediocre at both, but happens to know how to do both so comes in handy.
We get a bit of Coulson as he sets out to retrieve something from a secured locker, we get Thor and Hulk landing in the Wishbone lab, and we get Hill giving orders to one of the nearby Lightnings – real planes! – to take on Hulk. It’s a full minute! Tune in!

TA079: A Certified Lever Lover25 May 202300:26:30
Minute Seventy Nine: From Tony’s Tech Jargon to Hulk Failing to Pick Up MjølnirJason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’, joins us in this episode!
In the seventy-ninth minute of The Avengers...So much of Tony-science in this minute! We get to talk about magnetic levitation, or mag-lev. We also get to discuss stators and the potential logic behind what Tony’s trying to do. It somewhat makes sense. Is that good enough? There’s also some serious discussion about the red lever and how it plays into Tony’s dumbing down the conversation.
From there, we return to Thor and Hulk. We get a nice dutch angle of Thor – a nice nod to Kenneth Branagh’s style. We also get the surprising return of tiptoeing Hulk. Why is he so quiet in his approach to Thor? There’s also the calling of Mjølnir which elicits some concerns. That being said, we do get some fantastic beats of the fight through the rest of the minute – Thor undercutting Hulk with Mjølnir, hurling him into a harrier jet in a speed-ramped shot shines. Thor dropping and sliding on his knees while leaning back to dodge the harrier wing is another. And Hulk grabbing Mjølnir, only to get pinned by it is a third.
We struggle through some of this minute, but still genuinely enjoy it, and have a great conversation about all of it. Tune in!

TA078: Hulk Head Through Bulk Head24 May 202300:31:38
Minute Seventy Eight: From The Hallway Chase to Steve Warning Tony About That Thing Getting Up To SpeedJason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’, joins us in this episode!
In the seventy-eighth minute of The Avengers...The hallway run as Hulk chases Black Widow is a fantastic shot and something that’s perfect for the trailer. What about the logic of designing a ship like this? Does the space make sense? We also run into some issues talking about the writer/director’s decision to have Hulk backhand Natasha, then shortly after prepare to do it again. It feels a bit... gross. But Thor arrives to save the day. Why not with Mjølnir? Oh yeah – we need to save that moment for a cool entry later. But can Thor really move this fast otherwise? He and Hulk end up in the lower docking area where we’ll see them fight for a few minutes. Why did it take Thor so long to join the fray though? And at what point did he learn that Bruce turns into this green monster? Does it matter that that’s never set up? Regardless, Hulk smashes him a bit more.
We end the minute back with Tony and Steve as Tony talks super conductors and kick-starting the engine, things that don’t make much sense. But it’s fun, right? Tune in!

TA077: You Can’t Say Professor Hulk Without a P23 May 202300:19:24
Minute Seventy Seven: From Tony’s Engine Analysis to Hulk Doing What He Does BestJason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’, joins us in this episode!
In the seventy-seventh minute of The Avengers...Tony and Steve continue their work on repairing the engine. We’re not sure about Steve’s decision to perform gymnastic feats on this damaged part of the aircraft, but he seems to be a monkey without fear of gravity, and we’re okay with it. Chris Evans delivers his line well here. Tony does his usual thing.
Back with Natasha, she’s now hiding from Hulk, who seems to have learned the art of tiptoeing. Why is he so quiet? And why has he decided to specifically single her out as his target? Wouldn’t he normally forget about her shortly after losing sight of her? We also get to talk about a deleted scene and the start of the hallway run. Tune in!

TA076: The Tiptoeing Version of Hulk22 May 202300:34:30
Minute Seventy Six: From Black Widow’s Trigger for the Hulk to Iron Man Arriving at the Scene of the Damaged EngineJason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’, joins us in this episode!
In the seventy-sixth minute of The Avengers...Natasha breaks free from the pipe, which causes Hulk to turn and see her. The chase begins! We talk a bit about this pursuit, which takes place over the next few minutes. We see Loki smiling in his cell as he hears Hulk roar, which leads us to discuss the cage in the first place – why did they put Loki here instead of a different non-Hulk related cell? How do they get Hulk into it? It doesn’t make a lot of sense.
From there, we head to the bridge where Nick Fury works to get his crew moving the helicarrier out to sea to protect the people on land below them. That, of course, leads us to discussing the reasons a flying aircraft carrier would ever exist in the first place. We also get to meet Jesse Garcia, our Carrier Bridge Tech, who learns to navigate with the sun.
The minute ends with Steve heading out to the damaged engine where he meets up with Tony, now in his Iron Man suit. It’s a busy minute of action. Tune in!

TA075: Hulking Out19 May 202300:33:15
Minute Seventy Five: From Tony Preparing His Suit to Natasha Pulling Herself FreeKurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast joins us in this episode!
In the seventy-fifth minute of The Avengers...We get to talk a bit about Tony and his bespoke traveling closet for his Mark VI suit, as well as the fact that it powers up, presumably to warm it up for him and his arc reactor.
But really, this minute is about the impending, hulking conflict between Natasha and Bruce. Natasha’s pinned down and Bruce is, well, losing control. Is it Natasha that finally pushes him over the edge? Or was he going there anyway? We get to talk a bit about these early stages of his transformation, what works, and what doesn’t. We also get to discuss our maintenance guys who come running in only to be shooed out by Natasha. It’s a great minute and our first chance to see any of Bruce losing control and becoming Hulk! TA074: Part of the Plan All Along18 May 202300:32:25
Minute Seventy Four: From A Shaken Nick Calling for Hill to Tony Telling Steve He’ll Meet Him at Engine ThreeKurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast joins us in this episode!
In the seventy-fourth minute of The Avengers...The helicarrier’s under attack and Nick gets everyone to work. We talk about the team building going on here, even if it’s not under the guise of the Avengers as the team. It’s great to see them all working hard to save the helicarrier. We talk about how much of this film takes place on the helicarrier. We also discuss Warren Cole a bit more, correcting our earlier conversation that pegged him as Galaga Guy. So now the question is... who is Galaga Guy? We chat a bit about the motives of Clint and Loki, and we get to chat a bit about Natasha and Bruce lost down in the equipment room. Tune in!

TA073: It’s Coming From Inside the Ship!17 May 202300:53:54
Minute Seventy Three: From Fury Readying His Sidearm to Fury Shaking His HeadJames Anderson and Colin Parker from the Timeline Scavengers podcast join us in this episode!
In the seventy-third minute of The Avengers...It’s a tension-filled minute! We start with Fury reaching for his gun because, as it turns out, Bruce has picked up the scepter. But... why? Is the scepter behaving? Is Loki in control of it in some capacity? There are questions we ask that we’re not even sure the filmmakers at the time had answers to, which is frustrating. Still, knowing down the road it’s the mind stone makes it make more sense, right?
The gamma readings trigger the system and Bruce runs to check, but why is the latitude/longitude giving a reading somewhere over the wilds of Quebec? And why is the helicarrier’s reading showing that it’s over Bermuda? Are these Easter eggs for someone in the crew? Was it intentional? Or were they goofs? We may never know.
But now the helicarrier’s blowing up like an 80s TV scifi show. Explosions out of the floor. Shaky cams equating a ship under attack. People flying through windows. It plays fine, but certainly gives us plenty to question. Regardless, Barton’s on the attack and our team is separated. Tune in!

Minute Seventy Two: From Clint Drawing His Bow to Bruce Asking If They Want to Know His Secret to Staying CalmKyle Olson from Marvel Movie Minute seasons 2 and 3 joins us in this episode!
In the seventy-second minute of The Avengers...This minute clearly shows that the scepter is somehow influencing the group as we see several of them shaking their heads as if in a fog. But why is this the direction they chose to take? Does it make sense? Is it masterful storytelling or just confusing? We get a break in the tension as Bruce reveals an attempted suicide, which surprisingly is a moment that essentially canonizes a deleted scene from The Incredible Hulk. It’s a great moment, and allows the argument to stop, even if it’s Bruce who now uses it as a chance to start getting angry. Meanwhile, Clint shoots an arrow at the helicarrier. But it’s a cute arrow! Tune in!

Minute Seventy One: From Team Time Bomb to Clint Preparing HimselfKyle Olson from Marvel Movie Minute seasons 2 and 3 joins us in this episode!
In the seventy-first minute of The Avengers...Now Fury’s getting concerned that Bruce may hulk out. Why isn’t Natasha involved in the conversation any more? All she does in this minute is have a cutesy smirk after one of Tony’s quippy lines. Should she be given more here? Why is Tony so intent on getting Bruce to hulk out? Does it make sense here in the Helicarrier? The comments he and Steve throw at each other are not only great, they’re very accurate. This scene plays incredibly well. So why does Loki send a guy with a bow and arrow to attack instead of, you know, a missile or something? Tune in!

IM3 Minutes 116-120: Clean Slate, Full Heart, Can't Lose23 Jun 202500:37:48
My Armor Was Never a Distraction (But Yes It Was)
Minutes 116-120The final minutes of Iron Man 3 bring multiple storylines to a close as Tony makes dramatic changes in his life. Rob and Kyle examine these closing moments with both appreciation and skepticism, particularly debating the significance of Tony's final line.Breaking Down Iron Man 3's Final TransformationsThe hosts explore several key moments that showcase Tony's evolution, from his decision to implement the "clean slate protocol" and destroy his suits to the removal of his arc reactor. They also discuss how the film ties up loose ends with various characters, including Happy's recovery, Harley's garage makeover, and even the fate of DUM-E and U. The discussion reveals fascinating production details, such as the last-minute CGI addition of Harley's watch and the original alternative ending line "I am Tony Stark."From Cocoon to ContradictionRob particularly takes issue with Tony's final monologue, arguing that the "cocoon" metaphor contradicts much of what the film established about Tony's relationship with his suits. This sparks a broader conversation about character development and whether the ending truly serves the story Iron Man 3 set out to tell. These final minutes of Iron Man 3 present a complex conclusion that, while visually stunning and emotionally resonant, raises questions about Tony's character arc that would continue to echo throughout the MCU's future phases.

TA070: Above or Below Angry Bees?12 May 202300:32:59
Minute Seventy: From Tony Wondering Why It’s About Him to A Chemical MixtureKyle Olson from Marvel Movie Minute seasons 2 and 3 joins us in this episode!
In the seventieth minute of The Avengers...More fighting, but now Steve’s getting some feelings out about Tony. Pretty soon, everyone’s arguing with everyone and we get a wonderfully magical shot as the camera pushes in on the scepter then goes up and over it, returning to the group now upside down. It’s a great way to demonstrate what’s happening here and why. Plus, it allows us to cut to Clint Barton, now in his very own quinjet with his very own troop as they approach the Helicarrier in preparation for battle. And it’s the scepter they seem to be using to find their way, but is that why it’s glowing? Or is it that it’s using its own powers to influence people, and by doing so is releasing the gamma Clint needs to find it? Or is it Loki somehow controlling it? Tune in!

Minute Sixty Nine: From Bruce Wondering About Natasha’s Manipulations to Steve Wondering About Tony’s WeaponsKyle Olson from Marvel Movie Minute seasons 2 and 3 joins us in this episode!
In the sixty-ninth minute of The Avengers...The argument continues! Tony and Bruce and Steve gang up on Nick. Bruce and Natasha are also arguing. We get Mark Ruffalo bringing up WMDs. And Nick blames everything on Thor! So who’s right in this argument? Why are they fighting? Does it feel like Fury’s flailing a bit to regain control? We may have issues with the writer/director but this dialogue and scene construction is fantastic. Tune in!

TA068: Fury’s Defense Mechanism10 May 202300:43:46
Minute Sixty Eight: From Natasha in Action to Loki Manipulating BannerKyle Olson from Marvel Movie Minute seasons 2 and 3 joins us in this episode!
In the sixty-eighth minute of The Avengers...Natasha’s figured things out. We love how she’s played Loki here. Her ‘thank you’ to him is particularly gratifying. The shots of her looking at Loki followed by Loki looking at her – though from a profile shot – do look a bit funky though. We talk a bit about the interior workings of the Helicarrier shot that gets us from the prison to the lab, even if it is a strange space that’s hard to make much sense of.
But it does get us into the lab, and into the conversation that Kyle’s here for. It’s his favorite scene in the film, and we understand why. We get to discuss the teaming up of Tony and Bruce against Fury, and how that soon includes Steve. Considering how Steve stormed out earlier, it’s nice to see he’s now on their side, albeit not for long.
Phase Two is introduced. Not the films, but the weapons, and we complain about the fact that they couldn’t come up with a different name. We also ponder Hydra’s and Zola’s involvement in continuing the development of Tesseract weaponry. There’s a lot going on in this minute and we’re here for it. Tune in!

Minute Sixty Seven: From Lying and Killing to Figuring It OutRobin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Fright Night Minute joins us in this episode!
In the sixty-seventh minute of The Avengers...Loki continues his monologue to Natasha, and unfortunately says one of the most disgusting things ever said in a Marvel film. It really feels like the writer/director’s hand at work here, and it’s just gross. That aside, Loki’s full-on malicious to Natasha as he works to break her down, destroying her hope that Clint will be saved. But it’s all okay because it’s just another of her fake-outs! Right? Well, it does play effectively, as gross as the insult is. It’s just a shame that Natasha isn’t given other ways to trick villains. There’s also talk about what we’re seeing in the montage and how all of our heroes are uncovering unsavory truths about SHIELD and showing that no one is to be trusted. Tune in!

Minute Sixty Six: From No Way Natasha Will Let Loki Out to Loki Lashing OutMatthew Costello, author of several works on politics and superheroes including Secret Identity Crisis: Comic books and the Unmasking of Cold War America, joins us in this episode!
In the sixty-sixth minute of The Avengers...We’re in the middle of the conversation/interrogation/manipulation match between Loki and Natasha. It’s a strong conversation and great minute in the film. Loki clearly got a lot of info out of Clint to use against Natasha, but would it have made sense for Clint to also have told Loki that she’d be expecting that? And that perhaps she’d be using that knowledge against Loki? We decide that it’s likely Loki’s hubris meant he never even asked Clint any more details beyond what he’d given already. The construction of the scene is great, particularly the reflection of Loki as he walks toward the glass to confront her. The performers are nailing their roles here. Its certainly gives us a lot to discuss. Tune in!

In the sixty-fifth minute of The Avengers...We continue our counseling session – I mean interrogation – between Loki and Natasha. Okay, so it’s really neither as she’s covertly made her way here to find out what Loki’s plans are with Agent Barton. All of this plays both of their strengths and make for an interesting scene between two people who love deception. Loki, for some reason, feels he’s got the upper hand as he starts asking her to open up, and finding that she will. It’s an interesting moment because she’s the one who now has the upper hand. He just can’t see it yet. We have a great conversation about this minute, and bid adieu to Travis after joining us for his last minute this season. Tune in!

TA064: I Bet He Thinks This Plot Is About Him.04 May 202300:33:15
Minute Sixty Four: From Loki Craving Power and Vengeance to Loki Expanding Agent Barton’s MindTravis Bow from the Reel Comic Heroes podcast and Marvel Events Timeline podcast joins us in this episode!
In the sixty-fourth minute of The Avengers...Thor and Fury wrap up their conversation, and Fury takes it dark. Is he saying he wants Thor to torture his brother? Yikes! Meanwhile, Thor is making it all about him. That’s so Thor. What’s interesting is that Loki likely would be trying to take over Midgard because it was Thor’s regardless of whether Thor knew or not, but Thor turning the entire plot into one of vengeance on him does feel like maybe he’s forgetting some of all those valuable lessons he’d learned before.
We jump from there to find Loki in his cell, and lo and behold, Natasha’s managed to sneak up on him. How? And why? We decide it didn’t matter how, but it’s awfully funny as a potential character trait that she has to sneak in everywhere she goes because she’s just so good at it. As for why, it’s clearly part of her plot to get info from him. What’s interesting about the scene, though, is that both of them are tricksters and employ this sort of approach, plus Clint likely told Loki everything about her, so he should know she does this sort of thing. That puts her in a place where she’s proving here that she’s much better at it than Loki.
It’s a great minute, even if we do have some questions about the logistics and reasons. Tune in!

In the sixty-third minute of The Avengers...It’s all about the walk-and-talk with Coulson and Thor. This is a fantastic scene of character building. It’s got humor, thoughts on war, Bilgesnipes – everything that makes a scene play well.
And then Fury interrupts, and the beautiful character scene shifts to plot and, well, it feels a bit clunky. It’s not bad, and we love Fury, but it just feels a bit more written. Minute Sixty Two: From Steve Snooping to Coulson and Thor Talking About ErikTravis Bow from the Reel Comic Heroes podcast and Marvel Events Timeline podcast joins us in this episode!
In the sixty-second minute of The Avengers...Steve continues his snooping. What will he find? While he’s doing that, we see a mysterious truck driving through a tunnel. Weirdly, the storage room and then the tunnel give a weird sense when cut together that the helicarrier is much bigger than we thought.
But no, the truck has Erik Selvig busy working on the iridium in soup can form. We chat about Erik looking crazier and crazier. We also discuss the not one but two men in the back of the box truck with him, and the fact that the insides of this box truck seem much larger than the exterior should hold. In the sixty-first minute of The Avengers...Bruce and Tony are still taking about their powers. Why is Tony pushing Bruce to join up and be part of the team? Or is it that he sees a brother scientist in need here? This is a fascinating scene of character-building and we’re all thrilled with how it plays out. Plus, it’s shot through the glass panel, so there’s a strange mirror element to it. The reflections of these heroes in each other? And did they CG the reflections? Bruce’s has a bit of a... look to it.
We also talk (finally) about Tony’s Iron Maiden shirt, and get a bit of time chatting about Steve prowling around to see what he can find. Tune in!

IM3 Minutes 111-115: Hell Hath No Fury Like a Pepper Scorned16 Jun 202500:38:52
Oh My God, That Was Really Violent
Minutes 111-115The climactic battle of Iron Man 3 reaches its explosive conclusion as Tony faces off against Killian in an increasingly desperate series of suit changes and combat moves. Rob and Kyle explore the technical brilliance behind these sequences while celebrating Pepper's transformation into an action hero.Breaking Down Iron Man 3's Most Explosive MomentsThe hosts dive deep into the intricate choreography and effects work, particularly praising the frame-by-frame detail of Tony's suit-ejection moments. They also discuss the fascinating reshoot history, revealing how the original ending featured Brandt emerging from the flames instead of Killian — a direct homage to Die Hard's Karl. Additionally, they explore the significance of Killian's Fin Fang Foom tattoo and its connection to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. From Damsel to Dragon SlayerPepper's triumphant return and subsequent defeat of Killian marks a crucial character development moment. While celebrating the sequence's technical and narrative achievements, Rob and Kyle thoughtfully examine why this spectacular scene doesn't receive the recognition it deserves within the broader MCU fandom — touching on complex discussions about female action heroes and costume choices. These pivotal minutes of Iron Man 3 showcase both technical mastery and emotional depth, culminating in a resolution that brings Tony and Pepper's relationship full circle while setting up future developments in their dynamic. The sequence particularly stands out for its innovative action choreography and Gwyneth Paltrow's physically demanding performance.

Minute Sixty: From The Seed Planted to A Terrible PrivilegeRyan Dalton, author of the Time Shift trilogy and This Last Adventure, joins us in this episode! In the sixtieth minute of The Avengers...It’s all about our heroes talking in this minute, even though Tony doesn’t necessarily see himself (or the others?) as heroes at this point in time. He certainly has opinions about Steve. What’s great about the little bits of dialogue and confrontation in the last minute is that it was enough to push Steve to want to dig a little deeper into what SHIELD’s up to. We get to see that pivotal shift in his character at the start of this minute, which may be the moment that finally brings Steve up to the 2010s.
There’s a lot going on in the conversation between Tony and Bruce. Two like-minded scientists, both dealing with their own issues that Tony sees as a ‘terrible privelege.’ We get a read on who they are from the dialogue as well, not to mention some really cool tech play. Plus, we get to talk about the ACME Corporation. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

Minute Fifty Nine: From The Only Name in Clean Energy Right Now to Cap Storming OutBubbawheat from the time loop podcast It's Time to Rewind joins us in this episode!
In the fifty-ninth minute of The Avengers...We wrap up the tension-filled conversation between Tony, Bruce and Steve. Tony and Bruce have some valid points. Bruce makes them better than Tony, who seems more interested in provoking Steve than anything. Or maybe Steve’s just mad that he didn’t get offered a dried blueberry before now? Regardless, the two of them do a great job of planting the seed of doubt in Steve’s head. Great conversation in this minute! Tune in!

Minute Fifty Eight: From Pointy Things to Tony’s PrototypeBubbawheat from the time loop podcast It's Time to Rewind joins us in this episode!
In the fifty-eighth minute of The Avengers...The argument continues, and it says so much about each of these characters. Bruce demonstrates that he always is working to avoid conflict, even in conversation. Tony constantly pushes and doesn’t worry about consequences. Steve still trusts those leading him. The idea of questioning Fury and his motivations is new to Steve, and allows for us to wonder what would’ve happened if everything went Fury’s way? It’s not pretty. We laugh a bit about Steve’s comment regarding Stark Tower, particularly because he was sketching it earlier in a deleted scene. And we get to talk about dried blueberries. Tune in!

Minute Fifty Seven: From Night Flight to Bruce Reassuring Steve That He Doesn’t Take OffenseBubbawheat from the time loop podcast It's Time to Rewind joins us in this episode!
In the fifty-seventh minute of The Avengers...We start by wondering about the un-cloaked helicarrier and why, perhaps, it’s not cloaked right now. We also wonder about the huge opening in the back and how logical that is for a vehicle that sits in the water part of the time. But really, our conversation focuses on Tony and Bruce as they nerd out on their science. We try to figure out what some of their tech is, and then we get to talk about Tony and his incessant (scientific?) need to poke (literally) at Bruce. We get to talk about the comic book origins of HOMER, debate the potential gamma radiation poisoning everyone should be dealing with, FLOPs, scepter stands, and more. Plus, Steve pops in to start arguing with Tony. Tune in!

Tony and Bruce start talking WAY over everyone’s heads, but in fact, the science does make sense. We talk about that a bit and try to break down what it all means. We also talk about Fury’s entrance and realize where he was, even though earlier we were complaining about the fact that he’s not here. We get to talk about Loki’s big stick, flying monkeys, and references that Steve gets. Plus, Galaga Guy! It’s a fun minute. TA055: She Just Really Doesn’t Like Tony21 Apr 202300:44:59
Minute Fifty Five: From Keeping the Love Alive to 120 Million KelvinEric Deutsch, co-host from Flash Gordon Minute and Escape From New York Minute, joins us in this episode!
In the fifty-fifth minute of The Avengers...Tony and Coulson arrive on the helicarrier bridge talking about the cellist, which leads us into a lengthy chat about “Agents of SHIELD” and the challenges of connecting TV properties at the time to the movies. We also talk about the writer’s penchant for seemingly throwaway conversations like this at the starts or ends of scenes that sometimes end up carrying import down the road.
Tony dives into problem-solving here, and we get a sense that he’s one of the smart scientists in the room. He’s also cheeky and arrogant, which leads to a debate about RDJ’s acting skills when he’s playing pirate at the captain’s post (or is it the directing? The writing?). Regardless of that particular line, we all love the Galaga bit and talk a bit about the game as well as the actor playing Galaga Guy, even though we don’t get to meet him yet.
Why isn’t Fury here? Why does Coulson leave? Why is Maria Hill so irritated? Is it Tony? Or is this a hang-on from the deleted scenes featuring her angry with Fury for involving the Avengers at all? It’s interesting to see how the scene plays without those deleted scenes. Plus, we get Tony and Bruce and Natasha and Steve and Thor – 5/6 of our team – in one place! And how great is it seeing our nerdy scientists starting to get really nerdy scientific with each other? Tune in!

In the fifty-fourth minute of The Avengers...It’s team time! We’re finally with (almost) all of our heroes in the same room. Sure, Tony doesn’t show up until the end of this minute, but he is here! We talk about the characters and how they’re each given some time so that it feels more cohesive. There are lines of dialogue that work, and Thor gets to shine a bit with comedy, even though he’s largely looking pensive and menacing. What about Loki having killed 80 people? Should we all remember that more with this character when he gets his own TV show? And what do we think about Tony’s entrance with Coulson talking about Portland? Tune in!

Minute Fifty Three: From A Very Desperate Fury to Loki Dragging Things OutJoining us on the show, we have Declan Craggs from Scream Movie Minute.
In the fifty-third minute of The Avengers...We start where we left off last minute – a key trailer shot of the Avengers at the conference table looking very pensive. What’s Thor thinking about? Why don’t any of them ask why it was so easy to catch Loki or why he didn’t try to escape earlier? The conversation between Loki and Fury is great. Fury’s quick end does make us wonder about that cut to Agent Hill. It sure feels like this was a legacy cut from the original edit when Hill was angry at Fury for getting them into this situation. Now, it just feels weirdly placed, particularly as it’s a line directed at Tony, who’s not even listening. Regardless, this all makes for an interesting conversation. Tune in!

Minute Fifty Two: From Fury Clearing Things Up to Fury’s Lost CreaturesJoining us on the show, we have Declan Craggs from Scream Movie Minute.
In the fifty-second minute of The Avengers...Loki makes it into his cell and Nick Fury joins him to show him his special prison. Nick is appropriately angry, but should he be opening the ship to demonstrate his jail cell setup? If he’s 30,000 feet up, that would suck him out, right? At the very least, it’d create a strong wind and likely make it very cold on the ship. But what would happen to Hulk or Loki if it dropped with them in it? Would it kill them?
How does Loki know the cameras are on when he turns to the security camera? Is it just his ego that he assumes everyone’s tuning in? What’s with his ‘lost creatures’ shade? But wait... why didn’t any of our superheroes escort him down here? Why did they go straight to the conference table to chill? We have a lot of questions this minute. Tune in!

Minute Fifty One: From Iron Man Getting Up After the Fight to Locked-Up LokiJoining us on the show, we have Declan Craggs from Scream Movie Minute.
In the fifty-first minute of The Avengers...The fight comes to an end. We sure hope there were no campers nearby as they may have just had all the flesh ripped from their bodies! We talk a bit more about the idea of good guys fighting, and that sense after something involving a lot of adrenaline when you calm down and look at what you’ve done. There’s a sense of that here for sure.
From there, we transition to the skies and specifically the helicarrier. Were they cloaked or not before we see them? Possibly? But how do our heroes get off the quinjet onto the helicarrier without getting blown immediately off the deck? And how do they breathe? Loki makes it into the hall with a team of SHIELD troops that look suspiciously like bad guys. Is this the start of HYDRA’s infiltration? We ponder the strange white antennae spaced out across the ceiling.
And we get to chat a bit about Bruce. What the heck is he working on? Should we know what this machine is or does? We assume it has to do with gamma, but does that mean this room’s irradiated? Why is it blue? When he and Loki share a look, what causes that pinch he does to the bridge of his nose? Is he just tired or are we meant to assume there’s some sort of thing Loki’s doing to him? It’s a strange moment, but plenty of great conversation. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!

IM3 Minutes 106-110: How to Lose a Pepper in 5 Minutes09 Jun 202500:48:05
Turtle, Turtle! (But Maybe Don't Quote Master of Disguise)
Minutes 106-110The climactic battle of Iron Man 3 reaches new emotional heights as Tony desperately tries to save Pepper while Rhodey works to rescue the President. Rob and Kyle explore the stunning action sequences while questioning some of the logic behind the armor mechanics and celebrating Guy Pearce's deliciously villainous performance.Breaking Down Iron Man 3's Most Heartbreaking MomentsThe hosts dive deep into the technical aspects of these crucial minutes, from Robert Downey Jr.'s real-life injury during filming to the impressive stunt work of Jade Quon and Fernando Chien. While they praise the spectacular choreography of Rhodey's rescue of the President, they also question how the Iron Patriot armor could suddenly function without power. Additionally, they debate whether the War Machine armor seen here is the same Mark II from Iron Man 2 or a completely new suit. From Stunt Performers to Special EffectsThe discussion highlights the remarkable careers of the stunt performers, with Quon's work spanning franchises from Star Trek to Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The hosts particularly praise the Extremis effects, which they argue still hold up perfectly today. Furthermore, they explore how the production team handled Robert Downey Jr.'s ankle injury — incorporating creative camera work and even rolling chairs to complete the sequence. These pivotal minutes of Iron Man 3 showcase both technical mastery and emotional depth, culminating in what appears to be Pepper's devastating fall and Tony's heartbreaking reaction — a sequence that had audiences genuinely believing the film might have taken its darkest turn yet.

Minute Fifty: From Another Headbutt to A Concussive StrikeEric Deutsch, co-host from Flash Gordon Minute and Escape From New York Minute, joins us in this episode!
In the fiftieth minute of The Avengers...More fighting between our heroes. How much did we want to see this when we were kids on the playground? How often did we argue about who would beat who? This is that chance. Did we need it? Maybe not. But it plays well for the most part, right? We talk about some moments that work really well in this battle. We also talk about why Thor is so serious here, much different than later when he gets to fight Hulk. Andy even creates a wacky metaphor for the entire situation.
And then we get to talk about the grown-up showing up as Captain America arrives, clocking them both with the pointy edge of his shield. But why did he decide to climb up to the top end of a broken tree? And how far did he have to run to get here? We debate a bit about the moment when Steve challenges Thor to put his hammer down, wondering if Thor only attacks Cap because Tony throws out a smarmy comment.
And then we get the other great argument on playgrounds – which weapon’s stronger. We get to see Thor’s hammer pounding Cap’s shield and lo and behold, it’s a draw! Sure, it destroys an acre of forest, but it’s worth it to see this, right? We dig into this and more. Tune in!

In the forty-ninth minute of The Avengers...There may be next to no dialogue, but there’s plenty of pugilism this minute as Thor and Iron Man go head to head, or... suit to hammer? There’s also plenty to discuss. Good guys fighting? How does that play? Is there a point they should worry that what they’re doing might actually kill the other? Lest we forget Loki’s sitting on a cliff watching below. Why doesn’t he try to escape though? Oh yeah – bigger plan and all. Shouldn’t the heroes wonder more about that though? And how does a suit get powered up to over 400%? Certainly a lot of questions as well as a fantastic conversation with Lester and Kynan in this episode. Tune in!

In the forty-eighth minute of The Avengers...Thor and Loki are mid-conversation and it’s just getting good. We’re just learning that Thor needed the Tesseract to get Loki home. But it’s all interrupted when Tony finally shows up and decides to just start fighting. The break in conversation, as it turns out, is a very Notaro-esque thing to do. It’s fun. But how does the fighting between heroes play? It certainly fulfills the comic book tropes, but what’s it say about our heroes? Does it make sense in the story? We bicker about it and largely land on the idea that it helps, even if Andy’s still a bit unsure of it. We do get some fun battling between Tony and Thor though! Tune in!

Minute Forty Two: From A Valuable History Lesson to Knocking Cap to the GroundFather David Mowry, chaplain of the movies by minutes community, joins us in this episode!
In the forty-second minute of The Avengers...We continue our conversation about our lone German man who stands against Loki. His replies to Loki are spot-on perfect. Great writing throughout this scene. Loki’s ego shines through in all the best ways, and Tom Hiddleston plays him to a T with those line deliveries. Captain America, of course, saves the German Old Man from getting killed by Loki. This is certainly something people often gloss over with Loki – he tried to kill a defenseless old man right here. In Germany. Should people be talking about this more with him? Regardless, it gives Steve a chance to quip back at Loki and then gets their fight started. But Loki calls him out as the soldier, a man out of time. Should Steve’s superior intellect pulled that out as something Loki shouldn’t have known? Should he be thinking more of the fact that Loki and Barton may be working on a plan? Oh – we also get the quinjet arriving in time for Natasha to take aim at Loki. Tune in!

But does Loki have any sense of this? Did he have to study Midgardian history at some point? Regardless, he’s got a great speech to the humans here in this courtyard, and we’re here for it. But why don’t any other police show up? Or news vans? It’s weirdly quiet and localized to just this group which makes this part of the film feel... small. Still... great speech. IM3 Minutes 101-105: When Hoarding Pays Off02 Jun 202500:32:41
It's Christmas, Take Me To Church (But Maybe Learn The Sign Of The Cross First)
Minutes 101-105The House Party Protocol finally activates in Iron Man 3 as Tony's entire arsenal of suits joins the fight. Meanwhile, Rob and Kyle delight in the buddy cop chemistry between Tony and Rhodey before the cavalry arrives, even as they question why these two aren't paired up more often throughout the film. The Iron Man 3 Armor Parade Takes FlightThe hosts dive deep into the technical specs and comic origins of each featured suit, from the Piston to the beloved Silver Centurion. While they marvel at the variety and specialization of each armor, they also question the suddenly abundant supply of arc reactors. The sequence showcases Tony's obsession with suit-building while treating viewers to spectacular action sequences, though some moments, like Tony's awkward attempt at making the sign of the cross, provide unexpected comedy. From Heavy Lifting to Deep Sea Diving: Breaking Down the Iron LegionSpecial attention goes to specific armors like Igor (Mark 38), designed for heavy lifting, and the Hammerhead deep sea suit. The hosts explore how these specialized suits appeared in various video games and other media, while lamenting that many never received proper toy releases. Additionally, they discuss the impressive stunt work of Aja Frary, whose extensive career includes doubling for numerous Hollywood stars. These minutes of Iron Man 3 deliver both spectacular action and meaningful character moments, finally paying off Tony's obsessive suit-building while treating fans to the largest gathering of Iron Man armors ever seen on screen.

In the fortieth minute of The Avengers...Loki continues his ocular extraction, and we learn why Clint requested an eyeball earlier. Again, it’s gruesome. Something we’d see in a torture porn movie, though then we’d actually see the process. Still, the fact that the digital scan of the eyeball is still looking around is terrifying stuff. So Barton steals the Iridium, which we learn more about, and Loki finally makes his presence known. He magically puts on his clothes and steps outside, blasting a police car and scaring the public. That car stunt is very exciting to watch. We’re not as much fans of Loki popping around the plaza to herd the people. It feels a bit... lame. Still, it’s a fun minute to discuss. Tune in!

Minute Thirty-Nine: From Guard Down to Ocular ExtractionJay Shepard from MCULocationScout.com and RetroZap.com joins us in this episode!
In the thirty-ninth minute of The Avengers...It’s rare to have a full minute without speaking in these films, but it does happen and this is one of them. We listen to the string quartet play Schubert while we follow action in three locations. It’s fun and works for us. We enjoy talking about Loki, but there’s also a lot to say about the location in which they filmed this. It’s gorgeous. The locations team clearly did some strong work in Cleveland. We also talk about the location where Barton’s breaking in. And, of course, there’s the quinjet on its way to cut them off, if possible.
The last bit of the minute involves Loki pulling out a horrific tool that he uses on a scientist to presumably pull his eyeball out. It’s awful, but fun to discuss. Why would they have such a specific tool like this though? Doesn’t it seem ridiculously convenient? Tune in!

TA 038: Foxing Around the Edges29 Mar 202300:29:26
Minute Thirty-Eight: From Near Mint to A ThwipJay Shepard from MCULocationScout.com and RetroZap.com joins us in this episode!
In the thirty-eighth minute of The Avengers...We get to talk about foxing in this minute. What the hell is it? And, of course, there’s more of the face trace as Agent Sitwell, making his appearance known with some lines finally, gets a hit. That’s right, they’ve found Loki. In Stuttgart. How the hell did he and his team get to Stuttgart, Germany, so quickly? If it’s a stolen quinjet, where the hell are they parking it? And how quickly can Steve actually get there so he doesn’t miss them?
There’s chat about the plan to incorporate Loki’s big reveal into Barton’s theft, and with Jay here, we absolutely have to talk about some of these fantastic locations. It’s amazing what they can get away with in Cleveland. Tune in!
