In this episode, we will learn how Adam Karofsky wrote his story, from being on track to becoming a professor and pivoting to entrepreneurship. Adam's journey was dynamic; when he was a kid, he dreamt of being a professor and wanted to be immersed in anthropology. Still, in the end, he's now running a business that helps people craft their stories, "… that was my goal until things got shifted around, and like we all have to do, you pivot, and you shift into something different. And now I'm here writing for myself, writing for others, and helping people tell their stories."

In one of our conversations, Adam discussed writing and how getting out those first words or sentences is one of the most complex parts of the writing process. Starting anything is difficult, but he believes that once you get going, the momentum will take over from there. Trusting this process will lead to better opportunities and a more emotional narrative.

Here is what you can expect from this episode:

  • It is essential to share your stories.
  • Adam’s tips on how to start telling your stories and do it authentically.
  • Tips to get started with the writing process. The first draft will always be the hardest.
  • Adam shares how we have the power to tell our stories in a way that is authentic to us.
  • How to take advantage of the technology we have with us today.
  • Sharing your writing with someone else to see what it feels like for others to read your thoughts.
  • Tips for the editing process.

#12 Kelly Buckley | Building Confidence in Life and Business06 Mar 202300:28:31

”When individuals consider beauty and confidence, they frequently consider outward, or looking, confidence. And I can assure you that confidence is more than just stylish hair and makeup. By moving beyond our comfort zone, we develop our confidence.”

In this episode, Kelly talks about the power of confidence and how it is crucial to everyone’s self-development. As a cosmetologist, she offered her definition of what true confidence is. Aside from that, we go to the root and where everyone should start to build that inner confidence – self-care! She said that the basic foundation of confidence is self-care, and it could be as easy as getting up and eating breakfast every day or doing a workout. We discuss identifying what you must do to make that happen. The lesson Kelly gave is to learn how to show up and be aware of how you convey an authentic message to your people.

About Kelly Buckley

Kelly has been in the beauty industry for over 30 years as a salon owner/cosmetologist, educator for an international color company, and now an Independent Sales Director with Mary Kay cosmetics. All her rejection letters from literary agents came down to the same thing. They all loved the work.

They all compared the work to well-known authors. But because she didn’t have a big enough platform, agents always passed on her. Carrie used that pivot in life and launched a company that could help women just like her―unapologetic in their stories without a massive following. She’s married to her best friend and on her next soul quest to become the next version of herself.

#0 Trailer19 Jan 202300:04:12

Have you ever been asked to do the one thing you dreaded most?

As a young adult, I did all the things that I thought a “responsible person” would do. I got a degree in Business, a well paying job with benefits and a 401K. When my husband and I started a family, I launched my first business so I could stay at home with my twin boys. And as a young mom I fully embraced that season of life.

Our suburban life in the Dallas appeared ideal with the SUV, a beautiful home, and my thriving photography business.

As ideal as our life was on the outside, I had lost myself in the season of motherhood at times, and I knew in my heart that it was not the life that we were meant to live. It looked good on paper but the pace was not sustainable for our family or our marriage.

Despite the fact that everyone thought we were nuts, we decided to do the very thing I dreaded most. In 2021, we left the only life we had ever known and moved 1600 miles across the country to start over.

When we decided to make the leap there was so much uncertainty. We did not know the future of my husband’s job. We were taking the boys away from everything they had ever known, and I would have to start my business over. However, we decided to let faith not fear be our compass!

Today we are building the life of our dreams. My boys not only survived but are thriving and would never go back. With a background in marketing and a decade in the photography business, I know how to help entrepreneurs shine online and share their talents with the world. The opportunity to rebuild my business allowed me to transition into a role as business coach and personal brand strategist.

Learning to pivot and not panic is a game changer in life and business. It will set you free! Choosing the adventure has allowed me to step into my purpose, build a beautiful business and a beautiful life in the mountains of Boise.

Join us here where we will share stories and topics to educate, empower and inspire you!

I am your host, Shelly Niehaus and this is the Educated. Empowered. Inspired. Podcast.

We’re kicking off a special series based on my Dream Business Blueprint, and today’s focus is on Stage One: Business Breakthrough—the foundation every business needs to succeed. I’m walking you through the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make at this stage and the three key things you need to focus on to build a strong, sustainable business.

  • Business Basics Matter – You don’t need fancy systems, but you do need the essentials: a way to take payments, schedule clients, and communicate effectively.

#109 7 Questions to Ask In Your Business At The End of The Year24 Dec 202400:27:29

In this episode of the Educated, Empowered, Inspired podcast, we dive into the power of reflection in your business. While most entrepreneurs focus solely on goal-setting, true growth happens when we pause to reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and where we can improve. This practical episode introduces you to a simple, actionable exercise: seven key questions to ask at the end of each quarter (or year) to evaluate your progress, refine your strategies, and plan for success. This is an episode to bookmark and return to regularly as you grow your business intentionally and strategically.

Key Takeaways:

The Power of Reflection:

  • Learning happens when we reflect on experiences, not just live them.
  • Establishing a rhythm of reflection (daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly) ensures continuous growth.

The Seven Reflection Questions:

  • Did I meet my financial goals?
  • What did I do well (my strengths)?
  • What were my weaknesses?
  • What were the most beneficial connections I made?
  • What activities served my vision and moved the needle forward?
  • What marketing activities worked best?
  • Where did I take risks or get uncomfortable?

Next Steps After Reflection:

  • Use insights to refine your goals and focus for the next quarter.
  • Implement changes through delegation, automation, or mentorship.

Practical Action:

  • Block 30 minutes this week to go through the reflection exercise.
  • Share your insights with me or a fellow entrepreneur to reinforce your learnings.

#104 7 Steps to Simplify Your Business18 Nov 202400:22:56

Shelly discusses a common theme she’s seeing among clients—a feeling of heaviness, exhaustion, and overcommitment. In this episode, she dives into five practical steps to help lighten your load, focus on what matters, and create room for growth and joy in your business.

Key Takeaways:

Strategies and Systems

  • Are your business systems feeling supportive or heavy? Shelly shares how to reassess your tech stack and decide what’s essential. She encourages listeners to streamline, keeping only what truly helps their business.

Commitments

  • Overcommitted? Shelly explores the impact of saying “yes” to too many commitments. It’s time to re-evaluate networking groups, coaching programs, and other recurring commitments that may not be adding value.

Goals

  • Are you holding onto goals that no longer serve you? Shelly talks about the importance of setting goals aligned with where you want to be, not just where you were.

Tasks

  • Are tasks being done out of obligation rather than impact? Shelly challenges listeners to assess the “must-do” tasks and consider outsourcing or letting go of those that don’t truly move the needle.

Rooms

  • Are you staying in groups or communities longer than you should? Shelly encourages you to release rooms or groups that no longer energize you, freeing up space for relationships and opportunities that better align with your growth.

Episode Challenge:
Shelly invites listeners to create a Life-Giving vs. Life-Draining list. Identify what to keep, what to delegate, and what to let go. Then, share one thing you’ll bless and release to make room for growth in the coming year. Shelly would love to hear from you—reach out with your takeaway and maybe even inspire the community!
