There are no two ways around it: you’re known by your clients’ results, and no matter how selfish your motivation is, the only way to get your clients good results is to focus on helping them first and foremost.
Today, I talk about the need for a focus on business delivery over business growth. I talk about what systems you can systematically implement in your coaching business to ensure that your clients get the amazing results that they want, and I ask what your next step will be.
“Just because 100 people have bought your program doesn’t mean that you have helped 100 people.”
- Matthew Kimberley

A lot of us spend too much time marketing and not enough time understanding our market. In this episode, I talk about the difference between marketing and prospecting.
Today, I define marketing and prospecting. I note the importance of getting to know your audience instead of simply telling a general crowd about your product. I note that knowing your audience will help you fine-tune your message, and I posit that marketing doesn’t get you clients; it just lets potential clients know you exist. Finally, I note the power of simply selling to the leads you already have.
“When you know exactly what the prize looks like, then you can fine-tune your message. And you actually need to do less marketing and more examination of who’s out there and what they need to hear.”
- Matthew Kimberley

What To Do When Your Clients Don't Do The Work
Thursday, December 2, 2021 • Duration 11:03
What do you do when a client has lost their mojo and doesn’t seem to care as much about their success as you do? As a coach, it’s tempting to knock yourself out for any client with a pulse, but this is not beneficial for your business or your client’s success. In this episode, I talk about how to know when you should stop working with a client.
Today, I point out the danger of sticking with a client who isn’t putting in the work. I note that a coach’s reputation is based on their clients’ results, and I talk about the distinction between a temporary slump and a dud client. I note that you have to consider your own position, and I explain why pushing ahead with dud clients will leave you with a bag of mixed reviews. I posit that there are some clients you just aren’t supposed to work with, and I share why you should put your energy towards pushing midrange clients to be star clients, rather than pushing dud clients to be midrange clients.
“I believe that we’re known primarily by the results that our clients get.”
- Matthew Kimberley

In any small business, there will be tricky, awkward, delicate, or menial conversations to be had and tasks to be completed. Maybe you’re chasing invoices. Maybe you’re negotiating with a client. Maybe you just need a password reset.
Whatever the case, it’s always a good idea to have an assistant to take care of these things--not only because you shouldn’t have to take care of them, but because you shouldn’t be seen taking care of them. Today, I talk about what to look for in your staff and why a personal assistant is beneficial to your business.
“When you are the product, you get in the way of what should be done or would be expected by a third party. So by becoming that third party, by playing that role, you allow yourself to be efficient, direct, and take no shit.”

Should You Buy A Business Coaching Franchise?
Thursday, November 25, 2021 • Duration 28:12
If you can tell that I am a huge fan of coaching as a profession, then I assume it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I believe anything that enables people to become coaches is a force of good in the world. I wholeheartedly believe this, despite not going forward with a coaching franchise I considered years ago. A coaching franchise is an enormous commitment that has various advantages and setbacks that you need to consider: whether it’s the right avenue for you will depend on several key factors.
In today’s episode, I discuss what franchising is and its prevalence in every industry, including business coaching. I describe my personal experience with franchising and reveal the three reasons I decided against buying into a coaching franchise. I illustrate the disadvantages associated with a coaching franchise, including territorial rights and its financial costs. I also discuss why I chose the Book Yourself Solid licensing & certification and share an anonymous letter from a coach who explained why they needed to make their coaching franchise work.
“A coaching franchise is a fantastic opportunity for the coach who wants to get started. But be aware that it’s not a small commitment, nor should it be.” - Matthew Kimberley

Does Your Coaching Business Wipe Its Own Ass?
Monday, November 22, 2021 • Duration 14:06
Often, business owners find themselves hovering over their business, watching the minutiae with a careful eye. They find themselves afraid to step back from the business and let it run more or less on its own. But in fact, this is precisely what they should be able to do.
Today, I talk about how a business is like a child. I note that it goes through many stages that ultimately lead to its relative independence. I note that running a business isn’t just handling problems as they come; it’s putting systems in place to handle those problems in the future so you don’t have to.
“What we want to do is nurture our business and allow our business to stretch its legs, to the point where it can toddle around on its own and we just need to keep a little eye on it from time to time.”
- Matthew Kimberley

Why "Always Be Closing" is Terrible Sales Advice For Coaches
Thursday, November 18, 2021 • Duration 18:49
There is a sales aphorism amongst marketers that I have been hearing forever and ever in my career: always be closing. It means always trying to make prospects buy your services, preventing them from having the space to consider what you offer as a coach. And when the picture that pops in everyone’s head every time they read “sales and marketing” is that of an insurance broker cornering a hapless passerby into buying a retirement product, it’s understandable that too many coaches are afraid of selling out of the fear of appearing sleazy.
But you don’t have to be sleazy. Nor do you have to always be closing.
In this episode, I reveal the dangers of the ABC approach to sales and marketing and describe what could happen if you implement it in your business. I reveal the two camps of coaching education and explain how the ‘always be closing’ principle came about. I illustrate the relationship between how much clients invest in your coaching services and the trust you have earned. I also share a powerful alternative to sales and marketing’s ABC philosophy and discuss why you might want to act like a prize for your prospects.
“There’s nothing wrong with helping a prospect decide, but there’s a fine line between influence and coercion. If we’re always closing, we tend to not allow people to get to know us.” - Matthew Kimberley

The Single Biggest Result You Give Your Clients
Monday, November 15, 2021 • Duration 20:57
Whenever you meet somebody at a cocktail party, how do you introduce yourself and explain what you do in your coaching business? Do you tell people that you’re someone who helps “people who are tired of thinking small and guide them into unleashing their fullest potential”? Or do you say you’re a management consultant who “helps executives increase stakeholder engagement through increased inter-departmental synergy”? How would you feel if a complete stranger introduced themselves that way to you?
Chances are, you’d feel very confused. And confusing people is the last thing coaches would want to do. So reserve those flowery words for your LinkedIn profile or the cover of your book and instead, offer your potential clients your Single Biggest Result.
In this episode, I discuss why putting into words what you do for a living is of utmost importance if you want people to understand what you offer in your coaching business. I explain why my father says he’s a departmental head at the NHS when, specifically, he’s a hospital chaplain. I reveal critical errors beginner coaches make when they introduce themselves as a coach. I also highlight the impact of specializing your business and emphasize the power of anchoring on the Single Biggest Result you can offer to your clients.
“Ensure that the Single Biggest Result that you offer to your clients is measurable, externally verifiable, and tangible.” - Matthew Kimberley

Endless Content Ideas For Your Coaching Business.
Thursday, November 11, 2021 • Duration 18:33
Didn't I just talk about being content free in the previous episode? I still stand by my previous statements that coaches shouldn't also be in the publishing business, but it's always good to have some content prepared because it is more than just subject matter for your courses and tips you share with your clients. In fact, content can help you engage potential clients, stay current, and even developing content can be useful as a disciplinary practice.
In this episode, I share why you should be developing some content, and how this can help you beyond just adding value to your clients. I talk about the importance of staying current with information to help you maintain an edge in your field. Also, I give you some exercises on how to generate more content ideas in the same amount of time it takes to drink a cup of coffee!

How To Run A Content-Free Coaching Business
Monday, November 8, 2021 • Duration 14:10
Are you ready to get off the content hamster wheel? There is a mindset that the only additional income stream is by constantly generating new content, however that’s not always the most valuable service. Whether you are a curriculum-based coach or take a more extemporaneous approach, you don’t need to be the publisher and administrator on top of being the coach. There are other options to generate income.
In this episode, I share with you a couple ideas on how to develop value in your coaching practice without having to develop more content. I talk about the types of questions you should be asking your clients, and how structured accountability can help overcome the need for more content. Also, I share how small social actions within your coaching practice can be valued especially in the time of Covid.
“We all know how to do a pushup. The reason we hire a coach to stand over us is to make sure we actually do the push up.” - Matthew Kimberley
