In the latest episode of the Manufacturing Leaders podcast, we’re joined by Mark Greenhouse - a highly experienced manufacturing consultant who’s spent years working hands-on in the industry.

Mark’s career spans from high-speed food production to advising factories across a wide range of manufacturing environments. Along the way, he’s built a deep understanding of how factories really work - from improving productivity and efficiency to getting business models and operations properly aligned.

In this episode, Mark shares practical strategies that can seriously lift factory performance - in some cases by as much as 40%!

We dig into how to spot bottlenecks, streamline workflows, and why the way a business is set up can have a huge impact on manufacturing efficiency.

We also talk about the everyday challenges manufacturing leaders face and how to tackle production constraints head-on. Mark explains why things like order frequency and readiness matter more than you might think, and how understanding them can help factories run far more smoothly.

Drawing on real-world experience, Mark makes the case for focusing on time rather than cost, and rethinking traditional process control to keep up with changing market demands.

It’s a packed conversation full of practical insights to help leaders rethink their approach and unlock hidden potential on the factory floor.

An absolute must-listen if you’re a manufacturing leader looking to boost productivity, tackle bottlenecks, and get more out of your existing operations - without adding complexity or cost.

Carole Williamson, In-Work Support and Training Officer at Durham County Council, explains why embracing neurodiversity in the workplace benefits everyone.

Key Points:

  • Neurodiversity reflects the natural variations in human cognition, yet traditional workplaces often exclude neurodivergent talent.
  • Many neurodivergent individuals mask their traits to fit in, and many—especially autistic women—remain undiagnosed.
  • Inclusive workplaces start with education, practical accommodations, and rethinking hiring processes to focus on skills, not interviews.
  • The "Four S’s" framework—See, Support, Safety, and Success—helps create a truly neuro-inclusive environment.

Building High Performing Teams Through Authentic Relationships13 Mar 202500:36:04

Send us Fan Mail

What makes an effective leader in today's complex manufacturing environment? Scott Lowrie, Operations Director at Fujifilm, reveals that authentic relationship-building trumps traditional command-and-control approaches every time.

"It's very easy to talk the talk, but you've got to walk the walk," Scott explains, highlighting how behaviours cascade through organisations when leaders model what they expect. The most powerful validation? Walking into a meeting room to find your team confidently running things without you – proof that empowerment truly works.

Scott challenges the outdated notion that introverts can't excel in leadership positions. His journey demonstrates how emotional intelligence and relationship-building create stronger foundations than charismatic authority. This perspective feels particularly relevant as manufacturing evolves to accommodate generational shifts in workplace expectations.

At Fujifilm's rapidly expanding operation, transparent career progression has become a cornerstone of talent retention. Their structured career ladders give employees clear pathways forward – addressing the needs of younger workers who value purpose and clarity alongside compensation. This systematic approach to development works regardless of company size, offering valuable lessons for organisations of all scales.

The conversation delves into leadership during challenging times, balancing pharmaceutical manufacturing demands with sustainability goals, and supporting a workforce with evolving mental health awareness. Scott's practical advice for aspiring leaders? "Grab as many different experiences as possible, even outside your comfort zone – you can't see it when you're young, but that depth of experience becomes invaluable later in your career."
