Infertility can feel lonely and desperate… as if you have no control. Especially if we’re told we have unexplained infertility, what are we to do?! How can we not just throw up our hands and give up?!
After being beat down and given a predetermined course by her doctor, Monica Cox decided to take her future into her own hands and explore Functional Medicine. The impact this new lifestyle had on her personally encouraged her to get trained as a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner herself! She continued the diet and healthy lifestyle and got pregnant naturally for first time in 9 years
By learning from what she did, we can start to implement those tools today to improve our chances of fertility and fight back against our doctors.

When you’re laying in bed postpartum with your newborn on your chest, maybe practicing skin to skin, you never expect that little infant to wiggle off you and fall. This traumatic moment became a reality for one of today's guests, Hayley Mullins, two weeks postpartum. This week is Newborn Falls Awareness Week and it’s important for us to realize that newborn falls are much more common than we hear about. Hayley was so empowered to make a change, after having trouble finding a product that would work, that she created a prototype in 3 weeks, which is now called the Joeyband for clinical use and the RooLoop for retail. Hayley and her co-founder, Sarah-Almaza Cox are on the show today to share what can we do to protect our baby from falling postpartum? What is skin to skin? What are the benefits? …and so much more! Hayley & Sarah, along with their third co-founder Ashley, have collaborated with the company, Joovy, a global leader in premium products for babies and young children, that is passionate about solving problems and supporting families in order to bring this product into hospitals, as well as into your hands.

| EP44- I love you, but that was traumatic... | 22 Jul 2020 | 00:53:07 | |
A mama of two, whose daughter was born right at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mallory Grantz shares her challenging first birth story and the joy of postpartum during a pandemic. Mallory is a friend from college and it was so wonderful to reconnect and hear her journey. She was vulnerable enough to share how she lacked the connection with her first born that you think you’re “supposed to feel” right away. With such a traumatic pregnancy, it wasn’t until later into motherhood that she felt that connection and now her son is her mini-me. I was so grateful for her openness and vulnerability about the challenges you can experience at the beginning of motherhood.

| EP42- Becoming...finding YOU in motherhood… | 08 Jul 2020 | 00:43:17 | |
Tamra Andress is the mama of one inquisitive girl and one vivacious boy. She is an entrepreneur, a coach, an ordained minister, a podcast host and so much more! She is a breath of fresh air and energy. We discuss the importance of becoming a mom, but simultaneously holding onto or rediscovering your identity as a woman. We also unpack mom guilt and the many ways in which it can creep up. She discusses how she was so wrapped up in the working world (during the early days of her children’s life) that her life came to a screeching halt when she came home one day and her daughter, instead of running toward her, ran the other direction. She decided to quit her jobs that day and refocus on motherhood. While this process was a blessing, she also found herself trying to find her identity again. My hope is that you feel inspired after hearing her story to rediscover your identity, if you’ve felt like you lost it through motherhood.

| EP41- A military mom... | 01 Jul 2020 | 00:36:06 | |
July 1st...what a memorable few months we’ve been through! Thinking through this week, as we approach July 4th, Independence Day, and not knowing what kind of celebrations we’ll be having this year… I wanted to celebrate by chatting with a military mom! Monica Arce is a military mom whose husband, Oscar, joined the military 3 years ago when the economy in Puerto Rico was hit so destructively after Hurricane Maria. They had to move from the warmth of Puerto Rico to Alaska. Not only did she and the family have to adjust to climate changes, but also challenges with learning a new language, getting her son settled in a new school system and doing it all on her own. Take a listen to our conversation about her experience and the strength she needs to sustain for her son. | EP40- C-section, the unwritten birth plan... | 17 Jun 2020 | 00:56:11
This week’s episode is a conversation about C-sections, something that doesn’t seem to be discussed. After realizing that very few moms even talk about having a c-section, never-mind going into detail about the challenges around them during and after in recovery, this mama Susannah Hilliard thought it was time to share her experience. After an emergency c-section, Susannah’s baby was born and she didn’t even know it was happening. Not only that, but her husband was still waiting to be brought into the room to see his son be born, having no idea that he had already arrived. She shares some insight into what the recovery process looks like and is passionate about sharing stories like hers, so that c-section moms know they aren’t alone. Remember, at the end of the day, the most important thing is that you brought life into the world, no matter how it comes. Follow her on Instagram! | EP38- You have superhero skills... | 27 May 2020 | 00:41:02
Having her first child at just 19 years old, this week’s guest, Sabrina Ben Salmi from London, discusses the raising of her 5 children and how it transformed her for the better. She came from a challenging childhood with a lack of support, but discovered how to ask her kids: “How am I doing?.” That question has formed a relationship of openness, honesty and trust with each of her children. The Ben Salmi family has become a family of entrepreneurs, even at just 4 when her youngest son published a book! While they were growing up, she encouraged her children to study personal development together, learn about emotional intelligence, the intricacies of the brain and always spoke to her children as an ally. She would encourage and empower their strengths, passions and curiosities in order to support them to be future focused. Ben Salmi Family Mantras: We believe that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. We also believe that the journey of one thousand miles begins with a single step in the right direction.

Kate talks about the differences in pregnancy and birth for her two daughters. We then discuss small NYC living. This week, I worked on something a little different… In this episode, you’ll hear a joint episode with me and another podcast host, Adam Busuttil from The Dad Experience Podcast! We sit down and chat about the challenging times of COVID-19, what goes through the minds of dads and how we can all work together to slow down and be grateful for the present. Adam is a father of 2 girls from Michigan. He started his podcast, after being confined to his home for a year with the birth of his first daughter, because she had a congenital heart defect. He has created a place where dads could go to find meaningful parenting information and stories. | EP33- If prayer is talking to God, meditation is listening... | 22 Apr 2020 | 00:55:40
For the fourth episode in my Mini Meditation and Wellness Series, I am bringing you another meditation from a mama that I promise will bring you some strength, help you hear your heart and connect you to your own groundedness. Remember during this time to S.T.O.P (Stop, Take a break, Observe your surroundings, and then Proceed)! I know all of you mamas may be feeling anxiety and overwhelm during this time. Kristen is here to remind you to ground yourself for your kids. If we are running around frantic, they learn to be frantic and to fear. | EP32- Faith, spirituality & grace at a time we need it most... | 15 Apr 2020 | 00:54:53
For the third episode in my Mini Meditation and Wellness Series, I chatted with one of my best mama friends, Erin Adams, for a conversation around faith and spirituality. No matter what your beliefs, we wanted to spread the word that whatever energy it is that makes the world go round, it is that energy of love and positivity that we need to share today. Whether faith is something you lean on daily or it’s something you shy away from, there can be some comfort found in a quiet prayer or meditation, especially during times of struggle and uncertainty. There is hope and we will heal from this over time. Love thy neighbor and share love and light with the neighbors around you. This week, we dive into the world of foster care with a special mama with a huge heart, Ashley Baker. After having one biological child and experiencing kidney failure, this warrior went through a kidney transplant and then decided to look toward other parenting options. Through foster care, she and her husband have welcomed 16 children through their doors with open arms. Ashley talks about the highs and lows of foster care and how it has not only transformed her life, but also the life of her biological daughter. This mama is, as she says, “a champion for special needs, foster care and adoption.” I’d just say in general, she’s a champion, a warrior and overall badass loving woman. What a joy it was to chat with her. If you’re in the VA Beach area and want more information on fostering children, send me an email and I can connect you both for coffee. | EP12- Becoming a mama before Broadway… | 09 Oct 2019 | 00:52:51
From the Broadway Company of Hamilton, Liz Racanelli is a mama who found that becoming a mom made her grow not only as a person, but as a performer. Like many actors, this mama didn’t “make it” (as they say) on Broadway before becoming a mama, but tells us how it was more important to make those meaningful life decisions and let the work come as it would come. She talks about the fear that many actors face: the joy of being on the road with a production, being employed and traveling with her infant, then moving back to the concrete jungle and not knowing when the next job will come. The dramatic change in her daily routine was a huge adjustment for both herself and her little one and she explains how they slowly moved into a new normal. Liz is currently performing in New York City with the cast of Hamilton on Broadway. | EP11- Being a motherless mother… | 02 Oct 2019 | 00:51:11
At just 11 years old, one of my best friends, basically my sister, lost her mother to a brain tumor. It flipped all of our worlds upside down and left Sarah and her little brother, motherless. Though she continued to have countless women in her life step up and support her, there is still nothing like the voice and advise of your mother. It wasn’t until Sarah became a mother herself, that she started to realize how much her own mother’s passing had influenced her life. She became a motherless mother. Listen to the story of how something so terrible turned into a lifelong journey of discovery, creativity and passion. If any of you listening, are a motherless daughter or motherless mother, send me an email and I will connect you to Sarah. It is times like these that you need a village.

| EP10- Loss and overcoming birth complications... | 25 Sep 2019 | 00:39:00 | |
Today’s guest, Paige Koupal, brings us through her journey of 3 extremely different birthing experiences. From the first normal and quick birth to laboring for 24 hours and an induction with a c-section for the second and finally deciding to take a natural approach with the third, but ultimately not being satisfied with the results. At the end of the day, she has three very healthy and happy children, but it was quite a journey to get there. In this episode, we also take a moment to honor those babies Paige and other moms out there have lost. October is Pregnancy and Infancy Loss Awareness month, but I decided to share this episode for Paige this week because September 27th is the four year anniversary loss of one of her angels. | EP8- Life is messy, but that‘s what makes it beautiful... | 11 Sep 2019 | 00:55:30
September is NICU Awareness month and I found such a fun mom to share her experience in the NICU. Even though it took an entire decade to start a family, this hilarious mom and her husband kept their spirits high and believe “what’s the point of life if you’re not able to laugh about it.” Now a mama of twin 2 year olds and a witty 5 year old, Sarah Krieg laughs through her challenges getting pregnant, staying pregnant, IVF, c-section, NICU care and craniosynostosis. The NICU cared for, comforted and educated Sarah and her family and for that she is so grateful. As she says, “life is messy, but that’s what makes it beautiful,” and her light-hearted spirit definitely exudes those words. Listen to her story and prepare to laugh a lot along the way. As a filmmaker and photographer, she hides behind the camera when trying to cope with things, as she says, but it makes for beautiful and touching stories. After heading into your doctors office to figure out if everything is ok, they immediately tell you to head to the hospital and don’t stop to pee on the way. When you get to the hospital, you’re told that you will be having this baby tonight, more like in 30 minutes, because you have about 90 minutes before this syndrome that has started to attack your body, becomes life-threatening. You are truly...H.E.L.L.P.-less. That is the story of my hero of a guest, Shana Conza and her sweet baby girl Georgia, born at just 2lbs 8oz and 15.5”.

| EP4- A couple of DADS... | 22 Aug 2019 | 01:03:34 | |
Here at Mamas in Training, I want to showcase how every family is different, every child is special, every mom is a hero and every Dad can have the same wishes as a mom. If you are non-heterosexual and have ever dreamed of having a family, this couple is here to prove that with a little determination and a lot of patience it can come true. In this episode, my guests Sean and Tony (a couple of DADS) bring us through their journey of starting a family after being together for 7 years. These two required the utmost patience, as they hit obstacle after obstacle. During this interview, the excitement in their voices is so palpable, as they were just 2 weeks out from meeting their bundle of joy. No matter what form a family comes in, as long as it is surrounded by love, that’s all that matters and this little one will surely be loved by many open arms. ___________________________________________________ FOLLOW on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mamasintrainingpod/ WRITE a Review: https://www.mamasintraining.com/reviews/new/ JOIN our Facebook Community: https://urlgeni.us/facebook/mamasintrainingpod
