| This Family Shatters One-Size Fits All Education | 28 Jun 2024 | 00:42:22 | |
We've never met a couple with a background quite like the Oettels. In one conversation, you'll hear how a young couple became public school teachers - while first home-schooling their kids. They then started their own classical Christian school, followed by entering seminary, becoming a youth pastor and eventually an associate pastor. Then back to public school while sending their own children to a classical Christian school. Why all the change? With so many different perspectives from so many different venues - what did the Oettels learn? Which setting do they think best to learn and teach? How does Lacey navigate teaching in public school while her own kids aren't enrolled there while she yearns for her past in Christian education? What does Jon think about the Church's responsibility to open their doors to developing their own educational offering? If you take nothing else from this conversation, it's that keeping your eyes and ears open to the way the Lord moves in your family's lives can lead to big changes you can lean into rather than ignore. | A Montessori Christian Education | 12 Aug 2022 | 00:43:55
The school choice options are endless compared to twenty years ago where Christian education alternatives such as homeschooling were viewed as unconventional and strange. More states are offering funding opportunities like education savings account programs (ESA), reallocating funds, scholarship applications, and more. Parents are rapidly turning to these school choice opportunities as public school systems secretly implement curriculums like gender support plans and indoctrinate children on the issues of sex, gender, and race. Public education systems, teachers' unions, and secular education organizations are focused on creating diversity and pluralism within the classroom rather than instruction. Angie Hoffman is the founder of The Hearth Room Schools – a Christian Montessori school launching in Kansas City, MO in September 2022. A Montessori education is a child-focused approach that Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, developed for educating children. Students interact with curriculum in a hands-on environment and work at their own pace. Montessori learning also emphasizes practical life skills. Join Chris and Christine as Angie explains what exactly a Montessori education is and debunks some of the myths and assumptions parents think of when they hear Montessori. | Funding Students Not Systems w/ Corey DeAngelis | 05 Aug 2022 | 00:38:48
Highly polarized institutions are influencing what is being taught in public schools. Parents are taking a stand for their children; they want education not indoctrination. They want schools to get back to the basics. But public schools are prioritizing gender and race agendas over learning how to read, write, and do math. School choice and funding students directly in every state for the school and education providers of their choosing – institutions that align with their values – should be made available to every family in America. Corey DeAngelis is the national director of research at the American Federation for Children, the executive director at Educational Freedom Institute, an adjunct scholar at Cato Institute, and a senior fellow at Reason Foundation. His research primarily focuses on the effects of school choice programs on non-academic outcomes such as criminal activity, character skills, mental health, and political participation. Join Christine and Chris Stigall's conversation with Corey as they discuss school choice achievements and advancements across the nation. | Hope, Faith, & Community | 29 Jul 2022 | 00:46:13
As the beginning of the school year approaches, more parents are considering Christian education options as the public education system continues to fail. Culture has drastically shifted the education sphere forcing teachers and administrators to explore career alternatives or leave their profession entirely. Prior to the pandemic, a subtle shift and change happened in the public education systems and curricula. Now, teachers, administrators, school boards, and teachers’ unions are emboldened like never before. Molly Starkey, a former public-school teacher, left the public education system. She also chose to remove her three children from public school and enrolled them into private Christian education. She and her family found hope, community, and support within Christian education. A tyrannical precedent has set in as the public education continues to push parents out of their children’s education and force their political agendas into the classroom. School boards and teachers’ unions are projecting messaging and agendas that parents don’t get to choose. Public schools are more focused on over-accommodating social issues rather than listening to parents’ concerns, academic rigor, and accountability. Join Chris and Christine Stigall as Molly shares her journey in making the leap to Christian education. For more information on Christian education, please visit HerzogFoundation.com. Here's a topic we've never tackled on the show. Can Christians, specifically Christian schools lean into rapidly developing technology like A.I. or is it a dangerous place that runs counter to Biblical teaching? Dr. Seann Dikkers is both a Christian and a self-proclaimed homeschool dad and "tech guy" who reaches some interesting conclusions on the subject as he leads the Stigalls through the minefield of culture, big tech, and faith. | Modern Feminism Is Punishing Our Girls | 19 Apr 2024 | 00:30:43
It's not a surprise that Christian and conservative girls and young women find the outside world hostile to their point of view, particularly in higher education. Karin Lips founded the Network of Enlightened Women (enlightenedwomen.org) because she came up in college understanding traditional women felt driven underground, keeping their world view hidden from classroom discussion, clubs, and more. Their mission is to expose as many kids to the Gospel during the public school day as they can. Yes, you read that right. The PUBLIC school day. | Differentiated Learning In Christian Schools | 22 Mar 2024 | 00:44:10
One of the issues Christine and Chris hear repeatedly as Christian school growth explodes is, "What are Christian schools doing to accommodate my child with learning, physical, or emotional challenges?" Lorraine Hewitt is the Superintendent of Dominion Ridge Academy and the creator of the Center for Cognitive Formation. Lorraine doesn't believe there's any reason Christian schools, big or small, established or brand new can't meet all families where they are in their children's differentiated learning. She's so passionate about the subject, that she's created an instructional template and travels the country showing how to lead the way at a time when so many students and families of all kinds are looking for alternatives to the public school system. | Starting A Christian School in Your Church: One Year Later | 09 Feb 2024 | 00:46:48
You might remember an episode last year in which a young pastor arrived at a new church and felt an immediate call to turn his empty church facility during the week into a Christian school. It was certainly a "leap" for the pastor, his wife and their older, retired congregants. Now, with one year under his belt Chris and Christine ask - "Did it work? What should people know if they want to try it? How did God provide and move in this?" WARNING: If you've been on the fence about starting or joining an upstart Christian school - Pastor Luke is likely going to convince you it's time to "Make the Leap."
