Emotional Eating: Why It Happens and How to Take Back Control10 févr. 202500:13:29

In this episode of Making Sense of Women's Health, Roberta Bass dives into the complex topic of emotional eating—something many of us struggle with, especially during times of stress, boredom, or overwhelm.

Roberta explains why emotional eating isn’t about willpower. Instead, it’s driven by hormones, stress, sleep patterns, and deeply ingrained subconscious habits. She shares insights into how emotional eating develops, why it often feels worse in midlife, and offers practical strategies to help you break the cycle without guilt or restriction.

What You'll Learn in This Episode:

  • The difference between emotional hunger and physical hunger
  • How hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, and cortisol influence cravings
  • The role of stress, poor sleep, and blood sugar imbalances in emotional eating
  • Why emotional eating patterns are often rooted in subconscious habits from childhood
  • How to recognise your emotional eating triggers
  • Practical strategies to help you reprogram your response to stress without turning to food

Key Takeaways:

  • Identify Triggers: Notice when you’re reaching for food out of stress, boredom, or habit.
  • Pause Before Eating: Ask yourself, “Am I truly hungry or seeking comfort?”
  • Balance Blood Sugar: Eat meals with a mix of protein, healthy fats, and fibre to prevent energy crashes.
  • Manage Stress: Incorporate breathing exercises, mindfulness, or short walks to reduce cravings.
  • Prioritise Sleep: Poor sleep increases hunger hormones, making emotional eating more likely.
  • Move Your Body: Even a 10-minute walk can disrupt the emotional eating cycle.

How CONTROL Can Help:

If emotional eating feels deeply ingrained, it’s likely tied to subconscious patterns that willpower alone can’t shift. This is where the CONTROL method comes in.

CONTROL helps you:

  • Uncover the subconscious beliefs driving your emotional eating
  • Reprogram automatic responses to stress and emotions
  • Break the cycle so you’re no longer fighting cravings—you simply don’t feel the same pull toward food for comfort

If emotional eating is something you’ve struggled with for years and you’re ready to make a real change, CONTROL could be the missing piece.

Ready to Take Action?

  • Pause before your next snack and ask, “Am I really hungry?”
  • Notice your triggers—write them down if it helps.
  • Move your body for five minutes instead of reaching for food when stressed.

How I Can Help:

If you’re struggling with emotional eating, stress, poor sleep, or habits that feel out of your control, I can help.

As a Women’s Health Physiotherapist, Menopause Mentor, and CONTROL Practitioner, I support women in:

  • Breaking free from emotional eating and other subconscious habits
  • Managing stress, improving sleep, and feeling more in control
  • Addressing health challenges linked to hormones, menopause, and lifestyle changes

Understanding Menopausal Weight Gain: Causes and Practical Solutions14 oct. 202400:14:15

In this episode, Roberta discusses one of the most common issues women face during menopause—weight gain, especially around the middle. She breaks down the underlying reasons, from hormonal changes to poor sleep and stress, and offers practical tips to help women regain control of their weight and overall health. Roberta also shares strategies like strength training, mindfulness, and nutrition tips, including the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and time-restricted eating.

Key Takeaways:

  • Why Menopause Causes Weight Gain: Hormonal changes, including reduced oestrogen, affect fat distribution, leading to increased abdominal fat, including visceral fat, which can elevate health risks.
  • Sleep and Weight Gain: Poor sleep during menopause disrupts hunger hormones, leading to overeating and cravings for unhealthy foods.
  • Stress and Cortisol: High stress levels increase cortisol, which contributes to fat storage, particularly around the midsection, and triggers emotional eating.

Practical Solutions:

  •  Focus on whole foods and adopt the Mediterranean diet.
  • Practice stress management techniques like mindfulness and yoga.
  •  Incorporate strength training and cardio into your routine to boost metabolism and improve insulin sensitivity.
  •  Try time-restricted eating to help regulate insulin and calorie intake.
  •  Prioritise sleep hygiene to restore hormone balance.

Welcome to Making Sense Of Women's Health16 sept. 202400:06:43

I am so excited to welcome you to the very first episode of "Making Sense of Women's Health." This podcast is a labour of love, born out of my deep passion for helping women navigate the complex and often misunderstood aspects of their health.

Let me start by sharing a personal story that has shaped my journey and fueled my commitment to women’s health. My sister experienced early menopause, and it took years for doctors to recognise how profoundly it was impacting her symptoms. Watching her struggle without the proper support and understanding was heartbreaking and frustrating. This experience opened my eyes to the gaps in our healthcare system when it comes to treating women, especially in areas like pelvic floor issues and menopause-related problems.

This personal journey has taught me that women deserve to be treated as whole beings, not just a collection of individual symptoms. We need healthcare that considers the interconnectedness of our bodies and minds, and addresses the root causes of our health issues.

In this podcast, I aim to provide you with the education, motivation, and practical tips you need to take charge of your health and wellness. We’ll be discussing a wide range of topics, from pelvic floor health to menopause, and everything in between. I want to empower you with knowledge and tools that can make a real difference in your life.

Through my business and now this podcast, my goal is to create a supportive community where women can learn, share, and grow together. We’ll explore the latest research, hear from experts in the field, and share inspiring stories of women who have overcome health challenges.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m thrilled to have you here, and I can’t wait to dive into these important topics with you. Let’s make sense of women’s health together!
