Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Al Lauro of Big Al and the Heavyweights

The music of Big Al and the Heavyweights begins with the beat laid down by drummer Big Al himself.  Big Al Lauro was born and raised in the city of New Orleans.  He grew up surrounded by the unique culture of the city that care forgot.  The food, the language, and of course the music became a part of him as surely as he became a part of New Orleans.  Year after year he saw Mardi through the eyes of a child, with a wonderment and jubilation that continues today in the music of Big Al and the Heavyweights.  His drumming has been described by Blues Brother Dan Akroyd as the “pounding, driving force” behind the music of The Heavyweights.

My name is Heather Kathryn, I’m a twenty-two almost twenty-three year old singer-songwriter from Phoenix, Arizona. I started my musical journey at a young age and moved to Los Angeles at Seventeen. I spent a few years figuring out what kind of artist I wanted to be, I was originally just a singer then I found a love of writing songs and that never stopped. I started off as a pop artist but then realized pop punk was where my heart was.

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Mean Ole Fireman

Mean Old Fireman, the musical brainchild of slide guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Ned Bollé, weaves ample doses of New Orleans grooves, southern rock and old school hard R&B onto a blues roots framework to create their own version of Americana. "Somewhere around age 11, I heard Derek and The Dominoes," Bollé explains, "and those first few notes Duane Allman plays on "Key To The Highway" galvanized me; I wanted to sound like that. That whetted my appetite, and then, like so many people do, I found my way back to the roots of it all - Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, those guys. The same thing happened with my love for New Orleans music, Robert Palmer led me to Lowell George, and that led me to the Meters, the Nevilles, Dr. John, and so on.”

Ed Alstrom grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Started playing organ (the family Hammond M-3) at age 5, guitar and bass as a teenager. Didn't acquire a piano in the Alstrom household until he was 12, at which time his father brought home an old pedal-pump player piano, on which he activated the broken player mechanism by connecting a canister vacuum cleaner and running it in reverse, which caused the piano rolls to play at blinding speed. Young Alstrom found this highly entertaining.

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Hans Halstead

Hans Halstead found his songwriting ability almost by accident. After a recent breakup, Hans recorded original guitar riffs while singing off of his phone. It was only after Hans opened up to a friend about it on a bus to a soccer game where he was encouraged to pen words to the recordings. As it were, Hans had a natural instinct for storytelling, exploring harsh breakups, feelings of being an outsider, and the passage of time. Shortly after attending college, Hans met owner and sound engineer, Jason Orris, at The Terrarium Music Studios in Minneapolis, MN.

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Anthony Geraci

Pianist, Hammond organist and composer Anthony Geraci was born in New Haven, CT in 1954.  His interest in playing piano began at age four when he told his parents “I want a piano!”  Kind of an odd request when most kids want a new baseball glove or bicycle. His parents weren’t musical-not even a record player at their house- but they always supported his undeniable passion for music. They soon bought a Kimball Grand Piano that his mother paid $4 a week to own. Lessons at the Neighborhood School of Music, affiliated with Yale University, soon followed. At around the age of sixteen he befriended a fellow musician, Ed Cherry, at high school. They began listening to music together after school and one day Ed played a Jimmy Rogers recording, Chicago Bound, that literally changed his life. Ed went on to be Dizzy Gillespie’s guitarist for many years.
