Scrunchies and Suspenders in Slumber Party Massacre 2 (1987)18 Oct 202401:02:11

Let’s buzz!! Crack open a cold can of Slice soda because we’re tuning into Slumber Party Massacre 2 to discuss the head-to-toe killer leather and colorful 1980s ‘fits designed by costume designer Nadine Reimers! As per tradition, we go straight to the sequel, but in this case, it’s because of Driller Killer. Have you met a serial killer in a slasher film so smooth with his rockabilly rizz and drill bit guitar?! We have a very special guest, 80's pop culture queen and style enthusiast Grace Chan, to give us the lowdown on this cult horror classic and do a show and tell with her Slumber Party Massacre 2-related merch.

‘90s Stoner Style in Idle Hands (1999)11 Oct 202401:18:37

There is evil out there, and I'm gonna kick its ass! We’ve got a late ‘90s Halloween movie for y’all — Idle Hands! The one has a rare issue; there wasn’t a costume designer credit, but a kickass wardrobe department still put the cast in fun 'fits. We get into the [Devon] Sawassance and discuss his underrated, incredible performance in this movie. Hello, that hand acting? Oscar-worthy. We love you, Devon! We also discuss Seth Green as a ‘90s style icon, vintage bowling shirts, hesher style, and…Pornstar clothing (memba them?).

Top of the show chat and glorious tangents include Marie’s new Practical Magic prop acquisition, Queensylvia Akuchie’s gorgeous costume design in the new season of Bel-Air, what Blaire’s watching (Grotesquerie; Spoiler: She’s loving Travis Kelce), and another horror dude renaissance — Kyle Gallner!

Mid-Noughties Fashion and Poor Little Goth Girl Chic in Saltburn16 Feb 202401:11:50

Pour yourself a nice cool glass of bathwater because we’re talking about Saltburn today! Blaire and Marie break down the mid-2000s looks of the Catton clan whipped up by costume designer Sophie Canale (Bridgerton S2). We reminisce about our chaotic Facebook and Flickr albums and going to Club Bang. We also debate about skirts with leggings(“Is ‘Toddler Style’ fashion gonna make a comeback?”) discuss Jacob Elordi and his rich rugby jock, Ashton Kutcher-esque look, and praise our new shared style icon, Carrey Mulligan’s Poor Dear Pamela, with her designer goth girl ‘fits.

Cursed13 Oct 202100:49:00

"I guess there's no such thing as safe sex with a werewolf.

Prepare yourselves, Fishies. We're back this week and ready to celebrate our favorite month! It's officially Westober, our month dedicated to one of our fave horror directors, Wes Craven! We're kicking it off with a deep cut: Cursed, the 2005 werewolf horror-comedy that stars Christina Ricci, Jesse Eisenberg, Joshua Jackson, Judy Greer, Mya, and more! This movie really went through it, though. So many rewrites, recasts, reshoots. WHEW!

It's 2005, so we have a lot of thin brows , thumb rings, AND low-rise pants in our vision (which are coming back so THEY say...) thanks to costume designer Alix Friedberg, who we also stan as the genius behind But I'm a Cheerleader (!), Big Little Lies, and Nine Perfect Strangers, HELLO!!! Mermaids28 Sep 202100:51:10

"Please, God, don't let me fall in love and want to do disgusting things."

Happy Libra Season! We’re discussing the feel-good 1990’s film Mermaids, which stars Cher as a single mom to a teen Winona Ryder and lil’ Christina Ricci in early 1960s New England. Costumes were by the incredible Merit Allen who also did Eyes Wide Shut, La Vie En Rose, and The Witches, and who was also  a fashion journalist and editor at British Vogue and icon of the Swinging Sixties era. Ryder’s Catholicism-obsessed character wears prudish Peter Pan collared shirts with knee-length skirts, while Cher is a brunette Peggy Bundy in capri pants, cha cha heels, polkadot dresses, and, of course, an iconic mermaid costume. We also talk about finger foods and have an impromptu segment about "Famous Slaps." Tune in now and dance around the kitchen with us!

Habit (2021)14 Sep 202100:57:41

If a movie about LA party girls who pretend to be nuns that stars Mr. Gavin Rossdale and got backlash due to Paris Jackson portraying a "lesbian Jesus Christ" intrigues you, welcome to the show! Habit is pure microwaved camp, giving us Dolls Kill does Kill Bill. Aiii! While the movie probably won't win any Oscars anytime soon, we'd at least like to nominate the costumes! Designer Abigail Keever does a fab job with 60s, 70s, and 90s fashion references, with dem "nuns" in gogo boots, candy-colored lingerie, and a villain serving Cocaine Kacey Musgraves vibes. Glorious!

I Know Who Killed Me24 Aug 202100:32:39

"She always felt like half a person. Half a person with half a soul." We’re closing out stripper month with the 2007 Lindsay Lohan cult classic I Know Who Killed Me (aka Parent Trappin’ per Blaire). Lohan plays a college student who is tortured by a sadistic serial killer, then when she is found, claims to be a stripper named Dakota. This movie has everything: Twin Peaks vibes, a decent amount of gore for horror heads, the woman who plays the nun in The Nun, an Art Bell cameo for Coast to Coast fans, two Real Housewives, and a Sphynx cat with big balls. Costumes by Rachel Sage Kunin (Jane the Virgin, Dallas).

"Do you care for the Artist Formerly Known as Prince?" For this week’s Stripper Month-themed episode, we’re heading back to 1996 to hang out at the Eager Beaver! Demi Moore made headlines for her portrayal of a single mom-turned-exotic dancer in Striptease. The Oscar-winning costume designer Albert Wolsky (Grease, All That Jazz, Bugsy, Revolutionary Road)  dressed Moore in sequin bikinis, platform go-go boots, and feather boas, but let’s not forget about style icon Burt Reynolds and his Vaseline-filled cowboy boots! It’s stripper month here at Fishnet Flix and we’re kicking things off with Zola! We’ve been waiting for the “Thotyssey” to come out 4-eva and it did not disappoint. The costumes designed by Derica Cole Washington that Taylour Paige and Riley Keough wear throughout the movie are perfection. Vintage Dior, Fashion Brand Company, Zara, even some ASOS in there, and the lowkey homages to Wizard of Oz, Clueless, Romy & Michele are brilliant. Simply Irresistible 13 Jul 202100:59:10

Congrats to Blaire for today's episode, because she has been requesting we do Simply Irresistible for a while! It's her favorite movie, and you'll soon learn why...it takes place in a world where a magical crab turns a crappy chef (Sarah Michelle Gellar) into an amazing one whose food makes everyone horny! This movie may have gotten a 16% at Rotten Tomatoes, but it gets a 100% for costumes who are by Janie Bryant (Mad Men, Why Women Kill, It). But that's not all! None other than Todd Oldham is responsible for all of Sarah Michelle Gellar's looks!!! So grab yourself a plate of Crab Napoleon, sit back and relax, and enjoy the show.

Freeway13 Apr 202100:47:11

We're celebrating our THIRD anniversary today with one of our all-time favorites, Freeway! The 1996 cult film stars Reese Witherspoon as a white trash Little Red Riding Hood who's trying to make it to her grandma's house when she goes head-to-head with a serial killer. It's trashy, violent, and incredibly offensive, but worth it to see Reese in the role of her life! The costumes (by Merrie Lawson) are scarce, but it's quality over quantity — they bring us right back to growing up as teens in SoCal. We discuss our love for Dickie's overalls (again), Sanrio wallets, seatbelt-belts, Eddie Furlong's Cameo, Blaire's piercing mishap, and the time Marie rolled over on top of John Stamos's Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

Confessions of a Shopaholic29 Mar 202101:01:34

Get your oversized patent leather belts out, because we’re going right back to 2009 with Confessions of a Shopaholic, starring Isla Fisher as Rebecca Bloomwood, a NYC journalist with a serious shopping problem. In this episode, Blaire comes in hot with the tea. Also, discussion about the beauty of over-accessorizing and rejecting that Coco Chanel quote, glove thoughts, and Chet Hanx...The wildly colorful costumes are by Patricia Field (Sex and the City, Devil Wears Prada)!

Slaxx22 Mar 202100:31:46

Imagine a pair of jeans that automatically adapts to your shape...but actually wants to KILL you. That's the plot of Slaxx, a new horror movie about some literal killer...jeans. This isn't your typical Fishnet Flix film, meaning there aren't many outfits to talk about — but you know we love horror ova here, AND it's a movie about some murderous denim so we had to watch it!

Promising Young Woman17 Mar 202100:52:10

We’ve got sumthin’ a little different this week. It’s a heavy, dark, revenge flick, but we PROMISE it’s a good one. The recently Oscar-nominated movie, Promising Young Woman, stars Carey Mulligan as Cassandra, a woman who goes out to a different bar or club each night, pretends to get completely knock-down, blackout drunk with the purpose of luring a “nice guy” to take her home. At first, you don’t think this is going to be a “costume movie,” but it's interesting how Cassandra dresses up in different “disguises'' whenever she's on the prowl — a sharp contrast to the pastel sweaters and dresses she wears during the daytime. Costumes are by Nancy Steiner who did Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, and a ton more. Tune in now!

Fur Coats and Overalls in Steel Magnolias (1989)26 Jan 202401:06:43

My colors are blush and bashful! We’re ending Dollyuary, our month-long Dolly Parton celebration, with a classic…Steel Magnolias! After having emotional breakdowns from watching this tear-jerker movie, we get into the fashions of these strong southern belles! Costume designer Julie Weiss (Frida, American Beauty) put this deliciously talented crew of women (Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis) in big shoulder pads, cat-eye glasses, fur coats and overalls, and church hats galore! We discuss the alleged Mob Wife trend and thee armadillo cake; Blaire celebrates Ouiser’s (Shirley’s) eccentric Southern Lady glam, and Marie attempts to make Truvee’s (Dolly’s) cuppa cuppa cuppa cake (1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 fruit cocktail with the syrup). Coming 2 America08 Mar 202101:04:45

It’s a very special day here on Fishnet Flix! We hit tha big 100, babys! And we’re celebrating our 100th episode with a trip back to Zamunda with Coming 2 America, the sequel to the 1998 Eddie Murphy comedy. Costumes are by our queen, Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther, B.A.P.S.), so you know there’s not a bad look in sight. We talk about our fave outfits, all the gold and animal-themed jewelry we’re adding to cart, and how we’ve come a long way since we started the pod (particularly, Blaire’s online shopping habit). Warning: we end the episode with a spontaneous and extremely chaotic Mini Brands unboxing.

Romeo + Juliet22 Feb 202100:45:29

Where were you when you first saw Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio lock eyeballs through the fish tank in Romeo + Juliet? Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation of the Shakespearean teenage tragedy is a hyper-stylized fever dream that we’re STILL obsessing over 25 years later. Costume designer Kym Barrett (The Matrix trilogy, Us, Aquaman) put Danes in those iconic angel wings while dressing the rival Montague and Capulet boy-gangs in a perfect contradiction of Hawaiian shirts and D&G. The movie, the costumes, and the soundtrack still hold up.

Waiting To Exhale08 Feb 202100:59:28

Today’s episode is on Waiting to Exhale, the Terry McMillan-novel-turned-1995 film starring the late, great Whitney Houston, alongside Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Devine as four friends living in Phoenix Arizona, looking for love in alllll the wrong f***boys. It’s a movie filled with as many irresistible lines as there are costumes — from designer Judy L. Ruskin (Sleepless in Seattle, Bruce Almighty) that are somehow both timeless and deliciously ’90s at the same time. We won’t blame you if you start quoting the movie nonstop (esp. Bernadette's fire-setting monologue), or listen to the iconique soundtrack (which was produced by Babyface, and features Brandy, SWV, and, of course, Whitney) all week long.

We also discuss whether or not we should give The Wedding Planner another chance...

True Romance01 Feb 202100:59:21

We’re kicking off Valentine’s month with the moment we’ve all been waiting for, an episode on True Romance, the 1993 Tarantino-scripted, Tony Scott-directed film about a comic book nerd and a call girl who fall in love and go on the run. Yes, we see Gary Oldman with his locs, leopard print robe, and Jamaican patois, but Patricia Arquette rocks Every. Single. Damn. Look. as Alabama Worley. The cute, quirky, fun, and timeless costumes are by Susan Becker (The Lost Boys! Father of the Bride!). We also get into a lot of fun tidbits about the movie, try to guess Alabama’s zodiac sign, and uncover some exciting news about that heart jacket we talked about in our past episode on Jennifer’s Body.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure29 Jan 202100:34:13

You know we couldn’t end Keanuary without Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure! While this 1989 movie may not be known for its costumes (especially as it takes place over just one day) the Bill and Ted look is easily recognizable, fun, and dare we say, relevant? The cropped sweatshirt look is definitely in these days, hello, Bill S. Preston, Esquire. Costumes are by Jill M. Ohanneson (Six Feet Under, Revenge, Preacher).

In this episode, we talk about how a fashion historian uses the brief Beethoven scene as a benchmark for all Regency-era movies and debate whether or not teens still use binders. Also, Blaire realizes she’s never seen the 1993 erotic thriller, Sliver.

Get ready to get goth! Today’s Keanuary episode is about Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film that stars our beloved Keanu as a man who gets cucked by DRACUL himself. The costumes, which are by Eiko Ishioka (who won an Oscar for them!), will blow your mind. Serpent dresses, golden kabuki-style robes, armadillo-inspired armor. Enjoy!

It’s Keanuary! For our foray into the new year, we’re kicking things off with an entire month dedicated to forever hunk Keanu Reeves! Our first episode is on Johnny Mnemonic, a ‘90s cyberpunk thriller that takes place in the future, aka January 2021, during a time when a plague ravaged the world. Very surreal. In this ep, we also discover a treasure trove of movie costumes to purchase online and talk about all of the shows we’re watching and looking forward to this year. Costumes are by Olga Dimitrov.

Boudoir Chic and 'Ringmaster Red' in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982)19 Jan 202400:51:12

Y’all come back now, ya hear? In The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie musical, Dolly Parton is Miss Mona, the madam of the local Chicken Ranch, a historic and beloved brothel in a small Texas town. Sheriff Ed Earl (Burt Reynolds) helps out Miss Mona by looking out for the brothel, but the duo runs into trouble when TV personality Melvin Thorpe tries to expose the ranch. Dolly's outfits are a serious boudoir chic feast for the eyes, with ruffles, lace, feathers, sequins, and floor-length “ringmaster red” garments, costumed by the late, great Theodora Van Runkle (Troop Beverly Hills).

As usual, we break down our favorite looks but also discuss Burt Reynold’s hunkdom (and how we’d cast Pedro Pascal in his role for our imaginary remake). There’s also chisme about Dolly and Burt hating each other during filming, so Blaire has a request for Ryan Murphy: to make the next installment of Feud be about their drama!

Riding in Cars With Boys21 Dec 202000:30:44

It's the third week of Drewcember and we're Riding in Cars With Boys. This one has Drew playing teen mom Beverly (based on an IRL story) and it mostly takes place in the '60s, so there's some cute looks from costume designer Cynthia Flynt (A League of Their Own, Preacher's Wife). Plus it co-stars Brittany Murphy and we're sad this is the only movie she and Drew did together since they have the best chemistry.

Boys on the Side14 Dec 202000:43:11

For the second installment of Drewcember 2020, we’re doing Boys on the Side! Drew starred in this 1995 road trip, tearjerker of a movie alongside her longtime friend Whoopi Goldberg and Mary-Louise Parker. Drew’s outfits and hair in this movie exactly mirror her IRL style from the time ,which were a delight of course (even if the movie itself is questionable now). Costumes by Gloria Gresham (When Harry Met Sally, Footloose, Twins).

Doppelganger07 Dec 202000:40:39

We're kicking off our third annual Drewcember with a WILD CARD...Doppelganger! This weird, lesser-known film from 1993 film stars our shero, Drew Barrymore, as a woman named Holly Gooding who moves to LA and claims she's being haunted by her evil, murderous doppelganger! Costume design by Kim Tillman (10 Things I Hate About You, Wild Things, Cougar Town). Tune in now for '90s flower dresses and sheer white tights galore, but more importantly, to help us make sense of this strange movie!
