| Little P Purpose: How Small Actions Create Big Impact and Lasting Happiness with Dr. Jordan Grumet | 18 Sep 2025 | 01:05:56 | |
In this energizing new episode, Dr. Dan sits down with physician, author, and podcaster Dr. Jordan Grumet (Doc G) to explore the difference between meaning and purpose—and how understanding this distinction can transform how we live, work, and love. During their insightful conversation, Dr. Dan and Doc G explore defining questions including: What does it truly mean to live a life of purpose? And why chasing big, audacious goals often leaves us feeling empty instead of fulfilled?
Dr. Grumet shares his powerful and personal story from childhood loss and finding community in a small baseball card shop, to his career in medicine and his profound experiences as a hospice doctor. His insights reveal why most of us suffer from “purpose anxiety” and how embracing “little p purpose”—the small, process-oriented actions that light us up—can create joy, resilience, and authentic connection.
Dr. Grumet’s wisdom, work, and books (Taking Stock and The Purpose Code) remind us that purpose is not about proving our worth or chasing achievement—it’s about choosing daily actions that energize us and connect us to others.
If you’ve ever felt stuck, anxious about finding your purpose, or overwhelmed by life’s expectations, this episode will inspire you to slow down, reflect, and embrace the small steps that lead to big change.

| Choosing Wholeness: Embracing the Shadow and Rewriting Your Story with Elise Loehnen | 17 Jul 2025 | 01:07:35 | |
In this profoundly insightful episode, Dr. Dan welcomes back New York Times bestselling author and cultural thought leader Elise Loehnen to explore the power and necessity of shadow work. Together, they dive into Jungian psychology, the cost of cultural conditioning, and the stories we unconsciously carry that shape who we believe we must be.
Elise talks to Dr. Dan about the journey that led to her latest project, Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness—a transformational guidebook co-written with coach Courtney Smith. From the drama triangle to internal family systems to working with the “eight sins,” this conversation is packed with tools and reflections to help you move from ego to soul, knowledge to wisdom, and fear to empowerment.
Key Topics on this new episode include: what lives in our shadow—and why it matters; the cultural cost of being “good” vs. becoming whole; using anger, fear, and envy as tools for healing and growth; and the shadow’s role in leadership, parenting, and cultural change.
Listeners will walk away with practical insights on identifying their unconscious stories, tools to integrate repressed parts of themselves, and a new lens through which to see themselves—and others—with compassion and clarity.

| Tiny Humans, Big Emotions with Alyssa Blask Campbell | 19 Oct 2023 | 00:54:46 | |
Dr. Dan and Alyssa Blask Campbell (author; host of Voices of Your Village podcast) discuss children and their emotions today. Dr. Dan highlights Alyssa’s new book Tiny Human, Big Emotions: How to Navigate Tantrums, Meltdowns, and Defiance to Raise Emotionally Intelligent Children which empowers parents and caregivers to guide children through their range of emotions and their expressions of them, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of emotional intelligence
Generations of children have been taught to shake it off, brush the dirt off their skinned knees, wipe away their tears, and carry on because they need to build grit and resilience. But they also learn to NOT express or deal with “big feelings.” Early childhood specialist Alyssa Blask Campbell encourages the expression of feelings—big and small—rather than tucking them away.
On this new episode, Dr. Dan and Alyssa discuss why we need to learn how to raise confident kids who feel comfortable in expressing their tears, anger, fears and fury. We need to raise emotionally intelligent children so that they can become emotionally intelligent adults.
Alyssa Blask Campbell is CEO of SeedandSew.org for parents, caregivers, and teachers. She has a master’s degree in early childhood education, is a leading expert in emotional development, and travels the globe speaking on the topic. Her podcast, “Voices of Your Village,” is a gathering place for parents, caregivers, teachers, and experts, creating a modern parenting village. As Alyssa states: “It’s never too early or too late to start.” For more information about Alyssa’s work and book please visit www.seedandsew.org.

| Maintaining Connection with Your Children as a Working Parent with Ann McKitrick | 05 Oct 2023 | 00:58:29 | |
Today Dr. Dan’s guest is Ann McKitrick, parenting expert, child development specialist, parent coach, teacher trainer, host of the Parenting in the First 3 Years Podcast, and the founder of Nurtured Noggins. Today’s episode is all about working parents and their connection to their kids.
We all know there is nothing easy about being a working parent right? For new and young working parents, one of the biggest challenges is giving up our role as our child’s primary caretaker during the work week. Entrusting our young child into the care of somebody else Monday-Friday leads many parents to worry about their connection with their children. But, thankfully, there are many ways for working parents to develop, maintain, and strengthen their connection with their young children – even when spending hours apart each day during the work week.
Dr. Dan and Ann’s conversation is inspiring and insightful. It will reassure parents that they can create and nurture loving relationships. For more information please go to www.nurturednoggins.com.

***Content Warning: drowning and child loss.
Today Dr. Dan interviews filmmaker Chezik Tsunoda to raise awareness about childhood drowning. Tsunoda is passionate about drowning prevention, with a specific emphasis on equity in aquatics and expanding water safety accessibility. | The Leaving Season with Kelly McMasters | 08 Jun 2023 | 00:59:58 | |
Dr. Dan and author Kelly McMasters discuss The Leaving Season, her new memoir about divorce, creativity, the sacrifices of motherhood, and her decision to leave her marriage. This interview explores the many lessons about self, parenting, family, grief, and love Kelly learned while writing her book. Her wisdom will resonate with listeners.
Kelly’s honest story about moving with her husband, a painter, from New York City to rural Pennsylvania, where their children roamed idyllic acres in rain boots and diapers is wrenching and inspiring. Eventually the pastoral landscape and the bookshop she opened — restorative at first — became the part of her reasons for plotting her escape.
Dr. Dan and Kelly hope that today’s episode will connect listeners, create community, and decrease loneliness.

| Hanging Out: The Radical Power of Killing Time with Sheila Liming | 01 Jun 2023 | 00:53:26 | |
Dr. Dan interviews Sheila Liming, the author of “Hanging Out,” about why unstructured time is essential and why she urges us to say no to calendar invites and yes to “chilling.”

With constant digital access and smartphones around 24/7, our lives still aren’t connected in a meaningful way. Loneliness is an epidemic and Sheila Liming offers the cure: we need to hang out more.
Dr. Dan and Sheila discuss what it means to “hang out”; why modeling “chilling” is important for our kids to see; and how we can help future generations embrace “killing time.”
Sheila Liming is an associate professor at Champlain College (Burlington, VT), where she teaches classes on literature, media, and writing. Lisa also talks to Dr. Dan about careers and parenting, her own early struggles as a new Mom, the role of her Dad during her childhood, and what led to her journalism career focus on life/work. Dr. Dan speaks to writer and mother Tanya Frank about her new book ZIG-ZAG BOY: A Memoir of Madness and Motherhood. Tanya and Dr. Dan discuss Tanya’s compassionate, heartrending memoir about her quest to understand her son’s journey through psychosis.
One night in 2009, Tanya Frank finds her nineteen-year-old son, Zach—gentle and full of promise—in the grips of what the psychiatrists would later label a psychotic break. Suddenly, Tanya is thrown into a parallel universe: Zach’s world, where the phones are bugged, his friends have joined the Mafia, and helicopters are spying on his family. In the years following Zach’s various and changing psychiatric diagnoses, Tanya struggles to find support while navigating broken mental healthcare systems, first in California and then in her native London during lockdown.
Dr. Dan and Tanya discuss this compelling story about mental health and the power of a mother’s love. She notes, “We are all born with music inside of us – from the beating of our hearts and the melodies of our voices to the intrinsic rhythm in our movements. The natural musicality of every child opens the door to playfulness, joy, and creativity.” Laurie’s work is focused on engaging the whole child, inspiring children to sing, move, and express their feelings. Dr. Dan and Laurie dive into a compelling discussion about singing, movement, feelings, and how music connects and heals us.

| Navigating the Foster to Adoption Journey with Jenell Jones | 27 Apr 2023 | 00:50:27 | |
National Foster Care Awareness Month is May and over the years Parent Footprint listeners have asked us for more shows about foster care, foster parenting, adoption, and foster-to-adoption. Today on the podcast, Dr. Dan interviews adoptive parent and advocate Jenell Jones about foster care, adoption, and the foster-to-adoption journey as well as her personal experiences chronicled in her book Shattered.
Jenell Jones is an early education entrepreneur specializing in providing high quality learning experiences for children who have experienced trauma in low-income areas. In addition, Jenell provides advice and experience to foster and adoptive parents based on her own experiences as an adoptive mother.
In today’s interview with Dr. Dan, Jenell shares the joy and pain navigating the foster-to-adoption system for her daughter, Mercy. By the time she found a place in Jenell's family at 8 years old, Mercy had been bounced around with more than 20 placements, and her history of abuse and mental illness was not disclosed.
Jenell is a biological, adoptive, and foster mother, and these experiences shaped her ideas of motherhood and her parenting journey. Her honest reflections on the adoption and foster care system, mental health, and non-traditional families will help and inspire others navigating this journey.

| Girls with Impact with Jennifer Openshaw | 06 Apr 2023 | 00:43:14 | |
Dr. Dan interviews CEO/Founder of Girls with Impact Jennifer Openshaw about the organization’s work to provide leadership education for under-resourced young women. This interview is inspired by the recent celebrations for Women’s History month and International Women’s Day.
Guest Jennifer Openshaw speaks to Dr. Dan about leadership and her organization’s mission to train the next generation of female leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators in order to drive equity, diversity, and economic growth.
Dr. Dan explores how Jennifer’s passion for advancing girls comes from her own life story: at the age of 14, she took on her first “real” job as a maid in a motel while her mother worked two full-time jobs as a waitress to support the family. Today, Jen has built five new organizations, authored three books, and provided financial tools to a half-million consumers.

| On Loving and Leaving Ballet with Alice Robb | 23 Mar 2023 | 00:56:06 | |
Dr. Dan interviews former ballet dancer Alice Robb about ballet and her new book DON’T THINK, DEAR: On Loving and Leaving Ballet. Dr. Dan and Alice’s honest conversation about body image, perfectionism, diet culture, and more will resonate with all parents - not just dance parents.
In 2023, ballet is one of the most popular extra-curricular activities for young girls, and for some, it will take root as a lifelong obsession. Few will ever dance professionally but they will be shaped by the life lessons learned in the studio: discipline, silence, submission, and more.
Dr. Dan and Alice explore how researching and writing her book (part memoir, part journalistic reporting) can help girls and women of all ages because it explores unrealistic body expectations, disordered eating, body dysmorphia, how to succeed in a world where men are still (mostly) in charge, being judged solely on your appearance, social media, self-esteem, and ultimately helping the next generation of women survive in a culture that perpetuates myths about beauty, worth, and success.

| The ABCs of Inclusion and Raising a Deaf Child with Beth Leipholtz | 16 Feb 2023 | 00:54:01 | |
Dr. Dan is excited to welcome an inspiring parenting advocate, mom, and social media star to today’s episode: viral phenomena Beth Leipholtz joins Parent Footprint to talk about inclusion, raising a deaf son, and so much more. Dr. Dan also talks to Beth about her work as an accessibility advocate who believes in creating a more accepting world for our children.
