Length of article: 4 pages Length of audio: 16 minutes 8 seconds Synopsis: This is the audio version of the 4-page article I wrote and published on rabbischneeweiss.substack.com/ on 11/21/25 titled: Toldos: How Different Were Yaakov and Eisav? I was tempted to title this "When Teaching Rashi to Children Promotes Kefirah (Heresy)" but I decided that was too bold and relegated it to the subheading. Many thanks to Rabbi Pesach Sommer for providing me with the angle and structure of this article (and for granting me permission to quote his excellent Middle School dvar Torah).

Length: 1 hour 27 minutes Synopsis: This morning (11/14/25), in our Friday morning Machshavah Lab series for women, we continued learning through the prologue of Iyov (1:1 - 3:1). We began with a question of Iyov Methodology: Which commentaries would I recommend? This led to another important tangent (the second in three sessions!) about the ikkarim (fundamentals of Judaism). I'm particularly interested in what people think about what was said. We then read through Iyov 1:6-12 at a more leisurely pace than our quick overview last time, and we concluded by reading the Malbim's and Rambam's prefaces, explaining why I will NOT be decoding the allegory of the satan until a few months from now. The plan for next time is to go over the peshat of the remainder of the prologue, which we'll analyze in the session after that. ----- ืืงืืจืืช: ืืืื ื:ื-ืื ืจืื"ื - ืืฉื ื ืชืืจื: ืกืคืจ ืืืืข, ืืืืืช ืขืืืื ืืจื ืืืืงืืช ืืืืื ื:ื-ื ืจืื"ื - ืืฉื ื ืชืืจื: ืกืคืจ ืืืืข, ืืืืืช ืืกืืื ืืชืืจื ื:ื-ื ืืืื"ื - ืืืื ื:ื ืจืฉ"ื - ืืืื ื:ื ืจืื"ื - ืืืจื ืื ืืืืื ื:ืื ----- This week's Torah content is sponsored by Joey and Estee Lichter in commemoration of the yahrzeits of Joeyโs mother, Faiga bas Yehuda, and Esteeโs father, Yisroel ben Rโ Moshe. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 52 minutes Synopsis: This morning (6/21/24) we had a surprise Q&A as our last shiur in yeshiva of the 2023-2024 year! (2) What is meant by the term "ego"? (3) What's up with the waving of the Leviim in Behaalosecha? (4) What benefit is there to a person blindly obeying halacha, and how does "gadol metzuveh ve'oseh etc." fit in? Q&A #45 - Desiring Olam ha'Ba, Blaming Sins on Hashem, and Should We Strive for the Crown of Torah
Length: 40 minutes Synopsis: This morning (10/23/25), in lieu of our usual morning Mishlei, we had a Q&A session! We discussed the following three questions: (1) According to the Rambam, if Olam ha'Ba is non-physical, and if our desires only relate to physical enjoyments, how can we desire Olam ha'Ba? (2) What do we mean in the short vidui when we say ti'ta'nu, which some translate as "You have let us go astray"? (3) Should every person strive to attain the "Crown of Torah"? Ralbag's Sixteen Toalos (Lessons) from Megilas Rus (The Book of Ruth)
Length: 1 hour 23 minutes Synopsis: This morning (6/7/24), in our Friday morning Machshavah Lab shiurim for women, we decided to do a sequel to our Megilas Esther shiurim from earlier this year. As is his style, the Ralbag concludes sections of his Biblical commentaries with "toalos" (a.k.a. lessons) in halacha, middos, and philosophical ideas which he gleans from the text. He concludes Megilas Esther with 16 such lessons. Since this number was far more manageable than the 51 lessons at the end of Megilas Esther, we were able to learn through them all. Not only did we get some excellent and practical ideas, but we also arrived at a better understanding of what the Ralbag is DOING in his methodology.

She'eilas Shalom ba'Shem Greeting in the Name of God (Part 2)
Length: 1 hour Synopsis: This morning (6/7/24) we continued our analysis of the sugya we started on Wednesday night. After reviewing the facts and questions, we set out to define - or at least, attempt to define - the two main disagreements: (1) What was the structure of the takanah? (2) Which name of Hashem was this in reference to? I shared the various approaches that my chavrusa and I developed, and although we didn't manage to define things SUPER clearly, I think there's merit in the approaches we took. At the very least we emerged with a newfound kavanah to have in mind when we or our fellow Jew says, "Shalom aleichem!" ----- ืืงืืจืืช: ืจืืช ื:ื-ื ืืจืืืช ืคืจืง ื ืืฉื ื ื ืจืฉ"ื - ืืจืืืช ืืฃ ื ื ืขืืื ื ืจืื"ื - ืคืืจืืฉ ืืืฉื ืืืช ืืจืืืช ื:ื ืจ' ืืฆืืง ืฉืืืช - ืืืืืจ ืืคืืจืืฉ ืจืื"ื ืืืฉื ื ืชืืืื ืืืื ืืืืช ืืฃ ืื ืขืืื ื ืจืื"ื ืฉื ืืืืจื ืฉื ืจืืื"ื ืฉื ืชืืืื ืืืื ืืจืืืช ืืฃ ืกื ืขืืื ื ืืืืจื ืฉื ืจืืื"ื ืฉื ืกืคืจ ืื ืจ ืฉื ืกืคืจ ืืขืจืื - ืขืช ืชืืจื ืชืืืื - ืจืืช ื:ื, ืืขืจื ืจืื"ื - ืืฉื ื ืชืืจื: ืกืคืจ ืืืืข, ืืืืืช ืืกืืื ืืชืืจื ื:ื-ื ืจืื"ื - ืืฉื ื ืชืืจื: ืกืคืจ ืืคืืื, ืืืืืช ืฉืืืขืืช ืื:ืื ----- ย ----- The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Judah and Naomi Dardik in honor of Rabbi Moskowitz's second yahrzeit and in appreciation for all those whose love of Torah and excitement for ideas shines in their teaching. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Avos 4:5 - Sforno and Rashbatz on the Permissibility of Taking Money for Torah (Part 3)
Length: 1 hour 39 minutes Synopsis: Tonight (6/6/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we continued our analysis of the mishnah about deriving worldly benefit from words of Torah. After a VERY brief review of the Rambam, to which Parts 1 and 2 were devoted, we examined the opposition as formulated by two Rishonim. Sforno provided a clean, straightforward argument which demonstrated a completely different framework from the Rambam's. Rashbatz, in a lengthy commentary on or mishnah and an equally lengthy responsum (neither of which we read in its entirety), seemed to address the Rambam head-on. Not only did he provide a counterargument, but he explained the sources cited by the Rambam to support his view and marshaled dozens if statements from Chazal to support his position. We ended by attempting to define this three-way machlokess, and while we didn't succeed in arriving at a clear answer, we definitely felt like we had a nice first step. ----- ืืงืืจืืช: ืืืืช ื:ื ืจืื"ื - ืืฉื ื ืชืืจื: ืกืคืจ ืืืืข, ืืืืืช ืชืืืื ืชืืจื ื:ื Lenn E. She'eilas Shalom ba'Shem (Greeting in the Name of God) Part 1
Length: 1 hour 6 minutes Synopsis: This evening (6/5/24), in lieu of our Wednesday night Tehilim/Tefilah shiur, we took up a halachic topic: the takanah (Rabbinic enactment) to greet one's fellow with the name of Hashem. Iโm not going to edit any of them unless I find a typo. I want to preserve the spontaneous writing I did during that intense period of grieving.

Bechukosai: Rav Hirsch on the Eight Stages of Going Off the Derech
Length: 55 minutes Synopsis: This morning (5/31/24), in the SECOND of our Friday morning Machshavah Lab shiurim for women, we learned Rav Hirsch's elucidation of Chazal's outline of the eight regressive stages of abandoning Torah. I initially planned to give a third shiur this morning on a strange midrash on the phrase "I shall cast your corpses onto the corpses of your idols" (Vayikra 26:30), but we discovered that the midrash was connected to the pesukim Rav Hirsch set out to explain. Everything ended up fitting together quite nicely, even though the subject matter wasn't exactly positive. ----- ืืงืืจืืช: ืจืฉ"ืจ ืืืจืฉ - ืืืงืจื ืื:ืื-ืื,ื ืชืืจืช ืืื ืื ืฉื ืจืฉ"ื - ืืืงืจื ืื:ื ืกื ืืืจืื ืืฃ ืกื ืขืืื - ืกื ืขืืื ื ืืืจืฉ"ื ืืืืืฉื ืืืืืช ืฉื ืจืื"ื - ืืฉื ื ืชืืจื: ืกืคืจ ืืืืข, ืืืืืช ืชืืืื ืชืืจื ื:ื ืืืื ืจืื ืคืชืืืชื ื ----- The Torah content this week has been dedicated by me in honor of Ann with gratitude for her monthly support of my Torah content and in celebration of her engagement to Ben. Bechukosai: Ibn Kaspi on Why the Written Torah Doesn't Mention Olam ha'Ba
Length: 33 minutes Synopsis: This morning (5/31/24), in the FIRST of our Friday morning Machshavah Lab shiurim for women, we took up an old problem: Why is Olam ha'Ba only mentioned in Torah she'baal Peh but not Torah she'bi'Chsav. I wrote an article a few years ago in which I summarized seven views on this topic from the Rishonim along with one view of my own (see the show notes for a link to the article). I began this morning's shiur with a BRIEF overview of those eight answers, and then we read and discussed a ninth answer I recently discovered in R' Yosef ibn Kaspi's commentary on this week's parashah. In addition to being a thought-provoking answer in its own right, I think his explanation has far-reaching implications for our methodology of learning Torah she'bi'Chsav, but perhaps that should be another shiur. ----- ืืงืืจืืช: ืืืจืื ืื - ืืืงืจื ืื:ื https://rabbischneeweiss.substack.com/p/parashas-bechukosai-what-about-afterlife ืจ"ื ืืื ืืกืคื โ ืืืงืจื ืคืจืง ืื ืจืื"ื - ืืจืืฉืืช ื:ื-ื ----- The Torah content this week has been dedicated by me in honor of Ann with gratitude for her monthly support of my Torah content and in celebration of her engagement to Ben. Avos 4:5 - Rambam's Opposition to Taking Money for Torah (Part 2)
Length: 1 hour 33 minutes Synopsis: Tonight (5/30/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we continued our analysis of the mishnah through the eyes of the Rambam. We began with a VERY in-depth review of everything we covered last time (if you want to skip the review, start around 30 minutes into the shiur). We then read and discussed several additional sources in other works of the Rambam where he discusses this, focusing on his treatment in the Mishneh Torah. We concluded by attempting to analyze the five ways in which the Rambam views this practice as harmful. Next time (ืื"ื), we'll take another crack at figuring that out, and then take up the opposing view, led by Sforno and Rashbatz. Avos 4:5 - Rambam's Opposition to Taking Money for Torah (Part 1)
Length: 1 hour 33 minutes Synopsis: Tonight (5/23/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we began learning the next mishnah, but our focus was on the Rambam's diatribe - and that really is the most accurate word - against those who take money for Torah. We set out clear objectives and non-objectives. Our main goal for this evening was to read and discuss the Rambam's commentary on this mishnah, trying to understand as much as we could from THIS treatment of the topic. Our goal was NOT to stray into the other sources where the Rambam addresses this, nor to discuss how this translates into practical halacha, nor to discuss the views of those who disagree with the Rambam. Next time (ืื"ื) we'll review what we learned tonight, analyze the Rambam's treatment of the topic in the Mishneh Torah and some other sources, then turn out attention to those who disagree. Hopefully, by the end, we'll emerge with a clearer understanding of our mishnah according to both sides. ----- ืืงืืจืืช: ืืืืช ื:ื ืจืื"ื ืฉื ืจืื"ื - ืืฉื ื ืชืืจื: ืกืคืจ ืืืืข, ืืืืืช ืชืืืื ืชืืจื ื:ื ----- The Torah content from now through Lag ba'Omer has been generously sponsored by Malky M. Emor / Kedoshim: Should I Take My Kid to a Magic Show? (Full Shiur)
Length: 1 hour 15 minutes Synopsis: This morning (5/17/24), in our Friday morning Machshavah Lab shiur for women, we deviated from our planned topic to address a question that was raised in our community WhatsApp group: Is it bad (or even prohibited) to take a kid to see a magic show? In the first part of this shiur, we read the PSA that was posted in the chat and learn through all the sources referenced therein. In the second part, I make a counterargument and we discuss some of the many implications for parenting in general. In the final part of the shiur, we tie this in to Parashas Emor. ----- ืืงืืจืืช: ืืืงืจื ืื:ืื ืจืื"ื - ืกืคืจ ืืืฆืืืช: ืื ืชืขืฉื ืื ืกืคืจ ืืืื ืื - ืืฆืื ืจื ืฉืืืื ืขืจืื ืืืจื ืืขื ืงืขื:ืื ืฉ"ื ืฉื ืื ืคืชืื ืชืฉืืื ืฉื ื https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Eug%C3%A8ne_Robert-Houdin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Val_Valentino ืฉื"ืช ืืืจืืช ืืฉื ืืืจื ืืขื ืืืง ื ืกืืื ืื ืจ' ืฉ"ืจ ืืืจืฉ - ืืืงืจื ื:ื-ืื ----- The Torah content from now through Lag ba'Omer has been generously sponsored by Malky M. Length: 1 hour 24 minutes Synopsis: This evening (5/16/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we began learning the next mishnah which focuses on two motives for learning Torah and their outcomes. We raised WAY more questions and learned WAY more meforshim than I expected! Although we didn't solve all the problems, we did end up discussing some fundamental insights about how we ought to relate to our learning and practice. Q&A #39: Relationship with Learning, Identifying Social vs. Torah Values, Shlish, Curtailed Learning
Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (5/13/24) we had a surprise Q&A! We took up four questions: (1) When a person senses that their relationship with learning has changed, how should they go about evaluating whether that change is positive or negative? (2) How can we tell which of our values are from Torah, from society, or from a combination? (3) How do we classify various subjects within the Rambam's "shlish" program of Talmud Torah? How the (Seemingly) Outdated Elements of Torah Are Evidence of Its Perfection (REDUX)
Length: 1 hour 55 minutes Synopsis: This morning's YBT Sunday shiur (5/12/24) pertains to a critical intersection between hashkafah and pedagogy. As a high school teacher in 2024, I get a LOT of questions about the mitzvos, prohibitions, and institutions in Torah which seem outdated or which students find objectionable because they run contrary to modern Western values. Over time, I've developed an eight-pronged framework (or "suite of tools") for responding to such questions. In this shiur, I share these eight principles and lead a discussion about how they can be applied to address these important and difficult questions.
Note: This is a slightly updated version of a shiur I gave at Lomdeha in March 2021. ----- ืืงืืจืืช: ืืืจืื ื:ื-ื ืจืื"ื - ืืงืืื ืืคืจืง ืืืง ืกืคืจ ืืืื ืื - ืืฆืื ืชื ื ืืจืืฉืืื ืคืื ื:ื ืจืื"ื - ืืืจื ืื ืืืืื ื:ืื,ืื https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-time_nuclear_waste_warning_messages ืจืื"ื - ืกืคืจ ืืืฆืืืช, ืืฆืืช ืขืฉื ืงืขื ืจืื"ื โ ืืืจืื ืคืจืงืื ืื-ืื, ืืชืืขืืช ืืฉืฉื ืจืื"ื โ ืืฉื ื ืชืืจื, ืกืคืจ ืฉืืคืืื, ืืืืืช ืืืจืื ื:ื; ื:ื ืจืื"ื - ืืืจื ืื ืืืืื ื:ืื,ืื ืืืจืื ืื:ืื ืชืืืื ืืจืืฉืืื ืคืื ื:ื ----- The Torah content from now through Lag ba'Omer has been generously sponsored by Malky M. Length: 1 hour 30 minutes Synopsis: Tonight (5/9/24), in our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we began learning the next mishnah which focuses on chilul ha'shem ba'seiser (the private desecration of Hashem's name) and its consequences. On the surface, this sounds paradoxical: How can a person desecrate Hashem's name if there is no one to witness them? After reviewing the halachos of chilul ha'shem, we delve into the nuanced approach developed by the Rambam and the Meiri. Length: 1 hour 3 minutes Synopsis: This morning (4/18/24), in our pre-Pesach women's Q&A, we took up six questions: (1) What's the deal with the "shefoch chamasecha" intro to Hallel? (2) Why do we interrupt Hallel at the seder with the meal? (3) The focus of the seder should be young children, but what can be done for babies? (4) Series of questions on the halacha that our telling of the story of the Exodus should "begin with degradation and end with praise." (5) What is the idea that "Baruch ha'Makom" is a quasi-birkas ha'Torah? (6) What is the methodology for learning the Haggadah? Since this was a Q&A, the answers I gave were partial and not based on comprehensive research. Still, we managed to take a few nice steps for each of these questions, and now we have plenty to think about!

Length: 1 hour 35 minutes Synopsis: This evening (4/18/24), in lieu of our usual Thursday night women's Pirkei Avos shiur, we decided to do a deep dive into one of the most cryptic derashos in the Haggadah: the drashah on the phrase "and numerous," which quotes a pair of perplexing pesukim from Sefer Yechezkel. We raise a few questions, familiarize ourselves with Chazal's interpretation, raise a few more questions, read through the entire perek, and attempt to formulate an answer. Did we succeed in answering all of our questions? No. But I'm pretty sure we arrived at SOME insight, and steps we took will give you plenty to think about. Length: 1 hour 25 minutes Synopsis: This evening (4/4/24), in lieu of our usual Thursday night women's Pirkei Avos shiur, we decided to prepare ourselves for the upcoming solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 by learning through enough key sources to develop an authentically "Jewish" framework for our eclipse experience. We began by examining the mitzvah to study the eclipse and examined the greatest model among the Rishonim of someone who devoted his life to this mitzvah. Next, we compared and contrasted Judaism's orientation towards eclipses with the idolatrous view. In the main part of the shiur we focused on the problematic statements of Chazal which explicitly identify eclipses as bad omens. We talked about our preferred methodology of learning aggadic passages such as these, and we applied these methodologies to the first of these statements. We concluded by translating what we learned into a practical way to gain the most from the upcoming eclipse. This was an impromptu shiur, but I hope you find it as thought-provoking as I did! ----- ืืงืืจืืช: Bernard R. Its creator made episodes every weekday for the entirety of its first year. The frequency switched to weekly, then monthly, until eventually, the flow trickled to a stop. I know I'm not the only one who has missed this podcast and would like it to continue. I have a modest goal for getting it going again: one episode each week for the month of April. For starters. If you, too, were a fan of TSJ and are willing to be a sponsor, I have a feeling that a sponsorship might provide just the right measure of accountability to help me get the podcast back on its feet. ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss.
