Another train mix? Another Berlin-school mix? Yes and hell yes! I've been struggling to keep up with creating new mixes and then, like a train pulling into the station right on time, Paul comes to me with a new mix. Perfect timing! This one has tunes that are all fairly recent so it was fun to hear new stuff or discover new artists. I'm always up for new Berlin-school music and this set from Paul does that with long, evolving tracks that suck you in and keep you going. Here's what Paul says about his latest collection: "I expect that for people who commute to work by train, there’s not much novelty in it. But most of my train-themed mixes imagine a long-distance trip where the journey itself is the experience and the destination somewhere in your imagination. As I’ve said before, sequencer-based “Berlin School” synthesizer music is a natural fit to evoke the subtle, hypnotic rhythms of travel by train. The six artists in this set were all new to me this year—and what a joy it has been to discover them." Thanks again, Paul, for this wonderful collection of train tracks. Cheers!

A little over a year ago I posted a mix of quiet fusion jazz tunes which I really enjoyed curating. So it was only a matter of time before I made another and here it is. This mix has some of the same artists as the first one - Mile Davis, Soft Machine, Gong, Jean-Luc Ponty, Brand X, along with new additions. Not surprisingly, most of the tracks are from the 1970s, a few from the 80s and one new track by Elephant9 released in 2024. Here's the first quiet fusion mix - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/quiet-fusion/ I still plan on doing a straightforward fusion mix but for now this quiet set will do nicely. It's perfect early morning coffee music. Cheers!

| WABI SABI by Daniel Hawkins | 14 May 2026 | 01:05:21 | |
I've been super busy lately so it's perfect timing for another wonderful guest mix from friend of the feed, Daniel Hawkins. Daniel has done 4 mixes for LLM, each of them a great ambient journey. You can find them here: Amiably Ambient The Silence Between Dark Woods Metallic Memories "This one takes some thoughtful curating to come up with such a cohesive set. Here what Daniel has to say about the mix:"Wabi Sabi conveys feelings of desolation and solitude. Within Mahayana Buddhism these can be considered positive traits, representing release from the material world and the possibility of transcendence to a simpler life. As Mahayana philosophy emphasizes direct experience over verbal explanation, Wabi Sabi may be best understood in a non-verbal, experiential way. According to Richard Powell, "Wabi Sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect." Many forms of Japanese art have been influenced by Zen and Mahayana philosophy over the past thousand years. The contemplation and acceptance of imperfection, as well as the awareness of constant flux and impermanence, have been particularly important to Japanese arts and culture. Awareness of the transience of all things heightens appreciation of their beauty, and evokes a gentle sadness at their passing. So I’d been working on this mix for months - adding metallophonic cuts that caught my fancy - as a follow up to last year’s Metallic Memories mix. The mix got to over 3 hours - and I wasn’t sure Dave would be amused. They were all good pieces of music - but I thought maybe a tighter focus would make a more cohesive mix. As I trimmed it down the Wabi Sabi theme seemed to fit the mood and I think makes a nice set. I hope you agree."
Thanks for another fantastic mix, Daniel.
Cheers!

I am listening to this guest mix as I type this and I am loving this set. Curated by Roquen Lómë, this is a wonderful collection of tracks for slowing down, for introspection. You can find some of his stuff on Mixcloud - https://www.mixcloud.com/roguenlome/ Here's what he has to say about the mix: "There's something magical about listening to music late at night. You can dim the lights or turn them off entirely and immerse yourself in the sound. Your perception shifts just enough to highlight subtle noises, making any voices feel intimately near, though sometimes they may not be real. At times, they exist, and other times, they arise from your imagination or the onset of sleep. Most of the used tracks feature some form of vocal or whisper-like quality, though they may not always be tied to a human voice. I still tend to include vocal-driven songs into my mixes to provide an engaging contrast to the predominantly ambient and electronic sounds, ensuring the listener remains alert throughout the journey." Thanks for a lovely mix! Cheers!

We've had a few guest mixes recently with a couple more on the way so I figured we needed a straightforward ambient mix in between all the guest sets. This mix features all music from 2026, except the track by Slow Dancing Society & zakè which is from 2025. This also features some of my favorite ambient albums of the year so far: > Six Missing - drift, sway > James Murray - Solitude and Silence > Clariloops - As The Light Fades > David Cordero - La Imagen Muda LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX:
The mix is very chill, very ambient. I hope you like it. Cheers! ( ( ( ( ( ( T R A C K L I S T ) ) ) ) ) )

We are in for a real treat with this latest guest mix from Paul Asbury Seaman. Paul has done a bunch of "train" mixes over the years. He has also done several Berlin-School mixes. This one could be my favorite combo of the two themes. This wonderful mix plays right into my current obsession with the Berlin-School subgenre. I can't say enough about how much I love this mix. As I have stated here previously, I've been on a Berlin-School bender for the last few years. Although, now that I think about it, my return to this style has gone on long enough that it is no longer a bender or binge. It's just outright love for this genre. Paul has created an absolute gem so I'll let him tell you more about it: “People get ready…” Popular culture, especially in music, has long used the association with trains as an image of redemption. Part of the seductive appeal of long-distance travel is that something we experience might change or enlighten us. On a train we are free of the obligations and stress of driving, but also have a more private, sedentary experience conducive to withdrawing into ourselves than on a boat, a ship or a plane, yet--to emphasize the metaphorical lesson--in stillness we are also moving forward. This is the paradox: hurtling across the landscape (or through time) while sitting comfortably, without moving. Watching. Rejuvenating." Thanks again, Paul, for curating this fantastic collection of train tracks. ;-) Cheers!

| Kosmische Musik - A Starter Guide Vol. 2 by Erwin Broers | 26 Mar 2026 | 02:00:30 | |
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3JzC19Ip0rY-op7Qq5o6ypG54y5G2FFa2Npokja4yAWhP_3C3HsA7tPvMJ4No-wsYGSmiOWiioI7djV28Ba-2AWEEuP0NFO_t9OcrwqFomTRjWHNE3AgukvEv5ax94Z_H91fzZh9eDaXDpuMCKWgyqGyeBVW0bwbnVOw4j6C9Wu6gXex-NrHy/s1024/Kosmische%20Musik%202%20art.jpg
To finish the first quarter of the year we get another excellent berlin-school mix from EM master, Erwin Broers. Just like his ECM mix posted last month, Erwin sent me this mix last year but I spaced out and forgot I had until this year. Luckily for historical mixes like this one, the post is evergreen and can be appreciated anytime. I'll repost what he said about volume 1: "Here's a follow-up on my mix "Back To The Roots Of Berlin School". As you recall it featured a collection of electronic music tracks from the 1990s, that were inspired by the patterns, sounds and analog instruments of the 1970s and early 1980s. Back then, nobody talked about "Berlin School Electronic Music". That label would only appear somewhere mid 1990s, probably to honour the place where the genre was born. Fans in the early days would rather use the term "Kosmische Musik" (German for "Cosmic Music"). An explanation for the "cosmic" element is to be found in the use of the step sequencer, which made it easy to create hypnotic rhythm loops with up to 32 notes or steps, set a tempo, and mix them over electronic drones, soundscapes, soloing, washes, white noise and space sounds. The effect was to “float” the listener through endless terrestrial or cosmic space. For those not keen on using illicit substances, it was an interesting and harmless alternative "trip"! I thought about creating a mix of some classic pieces from that first era, but soon found out one mix would not be enough to do justice to all the fantastic "Cosmic Music" that was made back then. So we get two mixes! This post is for volume 2 and you can find volume 1 here - https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2025/06/kosmische-musik-starters-guide-vol-1.html
Thanks, Erwin, for another great cosmic trip!
Cheers!

I was listening to some U2 tunes recently and in the song "In God's Country" there's a line - "Sleep comes like a drug in God's country." I liked the "sleep comes like a drug" part and thought it would make a good title for a sleep mix. So I got right to work and found some great, recent tracks that are perfect for sleeping. Cue up the mix, climb into bed, and drift off to sleep.

Whoa nelly we are in for a treat with this guest mix! This new set comes from John McFadden who records as Fragile X. John has done two other mixes for us that you can find here: https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/aquadream-by-fragile-x/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/being-human-by-fragile-x/ I'm kind of jealous of this mix as there are bunch of tracks that I would love to have used in my recent undersea mix. So this is a perfect time for this set because it will play off of my "Alien Sea" mix and lead us into other ambient directions. John has a couple of new EPs out and you can find Fragile X music here - https://fragilex.bandcamp.com/ Here's what John says about "From Dusk Till Dawn" "I've been getting up early a lot so far this year, especially in midweek, for the day job and I've also been making the most of my weekends by trying to stay up late and be creative when I can. So, with that in mind, I've put together a mix to soundtrack the wee hours. I tried to make it dream-like and hazy. Like an escape into the hush of night and through to break of morning. Albeit crammed into 70 mins! It's got some dubby and experimental ambient stuff then slowly unfurls into more melodic ambient pieces over time. Very minimal percussion and the focus more on atmosphere and texture. Hope you enjoy!" Thanks, John, for a great mix! Cheers!

| Deep Ambient Explorations in an Alien Sea | 05 Mar 2026 | 01:02:26 | |

This mix is the perfect combo of two of my favorite mix themes - sea/ocean motif and ambient dub. I wanted to make an ambient dub mix and while searching for tunes I ran across several that had that great ocean vibe that some ambient dub can have. Then a few more had this odd sort of alien quality to them so I decided on a mix of deep ambient dub that sounds like it should be played in the oceans of Jupiter's moon, Europa. Mot of the tracks are fairly new, from the last few years. But there are some older tracks from 2013, 2012, and all the back to 2002. Everything combines for the perfect undersea exploration. I really love this one. LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX:

| ECM Favorites Vol. 2 by Erwin Broers | 26 Feb 2026 | 01:14:55 | |
I know two things that are true - Erwin Broers is a great contributor to Low Light Mixes and I'm an airhead. 🤪 Last year after I posted a mix of my favorite albums from ECM records, Erwin did his own version. He sent it to me in September and I totally spaced out and forgot about it until this week. But it works out in the end because I've been busy lately so a guest mix is just what I needed. Here's what Erwin says about his ECM favorites: "When LLM published a set of highlights from the revered ECM label back in early Aug '25, https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/ecm-favorites/, it just felt like short-selling its 1600+ title catalogue. A second installment seemed only a matter of time. And here it is! The mix mostly contains tracks one could characterize as "smooth contemporary jazz", the kind of music you put on to unwind after a busy day. A classic in this genre is John Abercrombie's "Timeless". But it also features a very special piece by Stephan Micus, the renowned German multi-instrumentalist, for whom ECM seems to have been created. We hear him singing in an imaginary language and playing several instruments; hauntingly beautiful! Cover Artwork: Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain, 2017" Thanks for another wonderful set, Erwin. Cheers!

It's been a little over a year since my last Sunday Morning Music mix so I figured we needed to revisit this beautiful series. This mix follows the same format as previous sets - a little jazz, some ambient and a few vocal tunes. There's not much else to say other than grab a cup of coffee, kick back and enjoy some Sunday Morning Music.

| The Silence Between by Daniel Hawkins | 08 Feb 2026 | 01:04:01 | |
When Daniel wrote that he had a new mix based around silence I knew it would be good. Then I saw the tracklist and I knew it would be great. He includes cuts from some of my favorite artists - Halftribe, Innesti, Sonmi451, Loscil, and A Produce. The A Produce track is one of my favorite ambienbt tracks of all time. Here's what Daniel says about his new mix: Claude Debussy once wrote: “The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between them”, suggesting that music's emotional impact, beauty, and expression come from the pauses and spacing between sounds. The first thing I think of is Eno’s classic Music for Airports - man did I fall in love with that album. Roach’s Dream Circle comes to mind - low and slow - the music just seems to breathe. Of course you have the steady state drone stuff from Grassow and friends, which I like - but there is no real structure - that’s the point I guess. I tried to pick work for this mix that had at least a bit of melody, but plenty of silence to define the notes. There is a sweet spot that when achieved sends me at least into a deep peaceful space. I’m thinking we all need to spend some time in that space these days to recharge and nurture our sanity. Hoping this mix might help with that my friends. Thanks, Daniel, for another excellent mix. I bought a new mac mini recently and I have been transferring a ton of music to the new system. While cruising through the old files I discovered a folder called "NETLABELS." It's a fascinating collection of music the 2000s that was released on what were then known as "netlabels". I had a ball listening to some of it so I decided to make a mix. There was a lot of music to sort through so I decided to focus on two of my favorite labels - Thinner & Autoplate. Thinner, based in Frankfurt, Germany, released music from 2001 to 2009. They were one of the most consistent and successful netlabels. Thinner’s catalogue includes releases from artists such as Digitalverein, Marko Fürstenberg, Benfay, Pheek, krill.minima, Vladislav Delay, Christian Bloch and many others. As of September 2006, Thinner productions had accumulated over two million MP3 downloads. Thinner had a sublabel called Autoplate, focusing on experimental and ambient music. Thinner on Archive.orgI hope you get a kick out of this trip back to the aughts. Cheers! T R A C K L I S T :

I haven't had much time or been motivated to create new mixes so far in the new year. But there's nothing like sub-zero temperatures and being cooped up indoors to get one in the mood for a good wintry mix. The temperature as I type this is -15 degrees with a wind chill of -40. 🥶 I've done these frigid temps themed mixes before and I'm always surprised at how well they come together. I start by simply searching for tracks with certain keywords - frozen, cold, frigid, ice, wind, winter, etc. and then try to use mostly tunes from 2025. This mix is a bit different than others because it turns toward warmth in the last few tracks - "Warmer Light," "Threads of Warmth," and "Warmth". I hope that by ending the mix on a warmer note that I may manifest higher temps. Stay warm and cheers! | Favorite Instrumental Rock Albums of 2025 | 07 Jan 2026 | 01:07:20
One of my favorite genre rabbit holes that I went down in 2025 was instrumental rock music. That title covers a lot of styles from post-rock to stoner rock to prog rock to cosmic country to fusion to psych rock etc. I've always listened to music that falls into this category whether it's Khruangbin or Causa Sui or Oren Ambarchi but this year my interest in this genre exploded. So I thought I would create a mix of some of my favorite instrumental rock albums from 2025. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the heavy stuff. This mix has a nice blend of a few heavy tunes with some Khruangbin-like tracks, a couple kraut rock style tracks, a jam band cut, a prog tune, even a dub track, and a bunch of other difficult to categorize music.

| Berlin School EM 2025 End Of Year XL Update by Erwin Broers | 31 Dec 2025 | 03:03:43 | |
https://www.blogger.com/blog/post/edit/21018554/2275455414727433593
Oh man, what a way to end the year! Erwin has been curating excellent Berlin-school mixes for us all year and now he finishes it off with this massive end-of-the-year update. I've been in this headspace for a while now so this perfectly satisfies my craving. Thanks to Erwin for a great year of electronic mixes. Here what he has to say about this year-ender: "Another smorgasbord of what the electronic music scene has to offer these days and another invitation for space travelling! It's an extra long mix given my incapacity to choose from the wide offer of sublime tracks and albums that were released in 2025. The diversity in styles within this music category is remarkable; synth pop, retro, contemporary and progressive Berlin School, cosmic sound tapestries, contemplative/meditative/emotional (drone) ambient and a lengthy deep house track. Special mention for two female electronic music artists Andrea Cichecki and Lisa Bella Donna. Unfortunately, women are rare in this line of music, but these ladies more than deserve their place in this mix with thrilling evocative compositions. Check it out & enjoy your trip!" | Favorite Ambient Albums of 2025 Part 1 | 26 Dec 2025 | 01:09:25
When end-of-the-year list season began I wasn't sure if I was going to do a favorite ambient albums list. I wasn't as locked into ambient as much this year as in the past. I spent most of my listening time in indie, jazz, and berlin-school. I had several ambient albums that would for sure make my list so I started with those and the next thing I knew - I had a list of 26 albums that are my 2025 favorites. Here are my favorite ambient albums of 2025, in alphabetical order:
I made two mixes so it will be a little easier to digest. This post is for part one. I hope you enjoy this look back at 2025. Cheers! T R A C K L I S T :

This is a mix I originally created back in December of 2006, during my first year of posting mixes online. This one never made its way to Mixcloud so I figured, with all the cold and snow I'm getting in my neck of the woods, now would be a good time to resurrect this set. The original post here on the blog has a bad link to the mp3 so I wanted to post it her as well. It's interesting to see the artists that I was listening to at the time. Such as Freescha, Svalastog, Yellow 6, Klimek, and the track by Clint Mansell from the soundtrack to The Fountain, which I was absolutely obsessed with for a few years. Every tune has one of these words...snow, winter, cold, frozen, ice, or freezing, in the title. Btw, the pic is my mom, taken in the mid 1970s. :-) Cheers!

| Dreaming In Gamelan by Andy McNeill | 11 Dec 2025 | 01:05:32 | |
I have a special treat for everyone with this new mix. It's a guest mix from friend of Low Light Mixes, Andy McNeill. Andy records as Maple Mountain Sunburst and has created two previous mixes for LLM and they are both excellent. You can find them here:
http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2024/10/a-moon-full-of-stars-and-astral-cars-by.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2025/01/we-did-it-again-by-andy-mcneillmaple.html Andy has a new album out, under his own name, that is a little different from his other recordings. That new album is the inspiration for this new mix which is really something special. I'll let Andy tell you about it: "Mallets, gongs, tintinnabulations, things that go ping. Here we have a mix of percolating exotica to float away on for an hour. I’ve included three tracks from a recent collaboration with percussionist and fellow composer Bill Brennan. Our album Dreaming In Gamelan blends West Javanese gamelan traditions with contemporary ambient electronics. Recorded with traditional hand-forged bronze instruments, the tracks were then augmented and treated in the studio. Also joining us was the brilliant electric violinist and sonic explorer Hugh Marsh. The album was mixed for immersive Dolby Atmos by Ron Searles (Atmos version available on Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon)." https://lnk.to/dreamingingamelan https://brennanmcneill.bandcamp.com/album/dreaming-in-gamelan Thanks to Andy for curating and mixing this great collection tracks. | Mentalized - The Music of Wolfram Spyra by Erwin Broers | 03 Dec 2025 | 02:01:20

Between Erwin Broers & Paul Asbury Seaman I have been exposed to a ton of excellent berlin-school music over the last couple years. Erwin continues his great string of mixes with this new one featuring the music of Wolfram Spyra. I was totally unfamiliar with this music before hearing this mix and now I'm thankful for the introduction. Here's what Erwin says about this mix: "In the mid-1990s, when interest for 'Kosmische Musik' (German)/'Cosmic Music' (English) regained, some Electronic Music artists chose to dig deeper into that first highly creative era, hence starting the 'Retro Berlin School' subgenre. Other artists merely borrowed certain elements (multi-facetted sequencing, layered soundscapes, space fx, Mellotron choirs,...) and then added their own spices to the sauce. One of the artists that managed to create his own style of contemporary "Berlin School Electronic Music" is the German Fine Arts student (then), and musician, inventor and sound designer (now, dixit his own website) Wolfram Spyra (Kassel, 1964), aka "Der Spyra" or simply "Spyra". His style is somewhere between floating, rhythmic, meditative, downtempo and groovy, yes almost danceable. A very interesting blend of old skool and modern electronic ingredients! This mix is a chronological overview of 20 years of releases from 1997 till 2018." This is a perfect mix for floating in a floatation tank, drifting off to sleep, or viewing the northern lights(which we've had several nights of this year). All the music is from this year, much of it from the last few months. There's not much else to say other than kick your feet up, relax and float away. My love for tribal ambient music, of course, starts with Steve Roach. Going back to Dreamtime Return, Desert Solitaire, Western Spaces, Origins, Strata, On This Planet, and The Dream Circle, just to name a few. I go through phases where I may tire of the style but I always come back to it, usually when a new record reminds me of how much I love the genre. In this case that new album is "A Path Within A Path" by Seabuckthorn. I always enjoy Seabuckthorn music so I dove into the new album and discovered a few tracks with an excellent, organic percussion sound that I love. The entire album is great. Once I latched onto those rhythmic tracks I knew I had to compile a few more for a new tribal ambient mix. Surprisingly there are no Steve Roach tracks in the mix. Although there's a great track from one of his frequent collaborators, Byron Metcalf, from his lates album - Spiral Exchange. I've created several tribal mixes over the years and I hope you enjoy this and the others as much as I do.

| The Next Train by Paul Asbury Seaman | 05 Nov 2025 | 01:18:37 | |
The guest mix hit parade continues! Right on the heels of his last train mix Paul gives another train-themed set. This is one more in line with many of Paul's other train mixes in that it's main genre is berlin-school. I have been on a berlin-school bender all year so I am excited for this one. Here's what Paul says about the mix: "You’re sitting on a grassy slope above the cottage, looking out across the landscape below. It’s night and soft dots of light here and there indicate other houses, groups of houses, a road. In the distance you can see the black edge of a ruler, marking the gap between carriages and a bright bar of light moving left in front of it. Like happens in dreams, you are watching the scene and then you are in it, your seat tipped back, not quite asleep, you’re looking out the window. It’s a modern train. Gone is the classic click-click, click-click, but you can still feel the subtle rocking back and forth as the train hurtles silently forward. Under the stars. The cacophony of a station stop, made eerie in the wee hours of the morning. Or memory stirring up a previous adventure then returning you to your current tranquility." Thanks, Paul, for another excellent entry in your continuing train series. LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX:

Yorgos Dousos is a multi-instrumentalist and composer located in Athens. He plays flute and clarinet to combine Greek music tradition, European jazz, and ambient electronic into an inspired musical experience. I got to hear an advance copy of his latest album - LUPUS, Love Under Pain, Upon Suffering - I knew immediately that I had to reach out to Yorgos about a guest mix. And here it is! Here's what Yorgos has to say about this set: “Late Night” is a small map of where my head has been living while finishing my new record. It’s the hour when things get quieter, when the room feels bigger than it is and every sound has more weight. I wanted this mix to sit in that space where breath, memory, and repetition start to blur. It opens with my own pieces (“Marisha” and “Breath” from "LUPUS, Love Under Pain, Upon Suffering") because that’s the emotional ground I’m working from lately. All of the tracks orbit the same questions I’m dealing with on the album: what it means for sound to feel physical and intimate but also distant and ghosted; how much you can say emotionally with or without melody; and where the human breath sits inside electronics and processing. Thanks, Yorgos, for this excellent mix!

| Amiably Ambient by Daniel Hawkins | 15 Oct 2025 | 00:55:18 | |
We've had a nice run of guest mixes lately here at Low Light Mixes world headquarters. And that streak continues will a wonderful new set from Daniel Hawkins. Here his two previous guest mixes: https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/dark-woods-by-daniel-hawkins/ https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/metallic-memories/ This mix has a perfect fall vibe. Here's what Daniel says about this collection of tracks: "As I was saving some of the songs that I liked over the past few weeks, I noticed a bunch of them were guitar pieces - so I figured that was as good a reason as any to do a themed mix. For me the hardest part of doing the mixes is I end up with a lot of good music and have to make tough choices about what to cut from the final mix. There are just so many great musicians out there now doing superb work. So I just go slow and make changes - I think this is a cohesive mix with a nice flow - you be the judge." Thanks, Daniel, for another excellent mix. Cheers!

| Berlin School EM Autumn 2025 by Erwin Broers | 08 Oct 2025 | 02:01:37 | |
The king of Berlin School EM music, Erwin Broers, is back with a fantastic update to his regular series. This fall update just may the best yet. I listened to this while biking home from work, unsure whether it would fit the activity. Oh man, it was perfect! It kept me pedaling and focused while exposing me to fresh electronic sounds. Here's what Erwin has to say about this set: "Another look at what's been happening on the Electronic/Berlin School/Synth Music spectrum over the last months. As might be expected, a variety of styles and vibes, so listen to the whole mix and I guarantee you'll find at least a few tracks to your liking. | The Lonely Bell's Autumnal Ether Mix | 01 Oct 2025 | 00:57:20

I always like to create a mix for autumn but this year I got bust and never got around to it. Thankfully The Lonely Bell has that covered.
The Lonely Bell is Ali Murray who hails from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. He has been producing for ten years and I have been a fan since 2022's "Kingdom of the Deep." The Lonely Bell has a new album out so to celebrate we have this new mix.
Here what Ali says about this mix:
"As the seasons begin to change, and late summer gradually fades into the dark, cold, wet, blustery days of early autumn here on the Isle of Lewis (Scotland) - I wanted to create a guest mix of ambient tracks that aurally reflect the quiet sadness and barren beauty that fills the air (and the heart) at this time of year. These tracks have been soundtracking my days during this seasonal shift, and I find that each individual track is dense with this strange and mysterious form of autumnal melancholy that is simultaneously haunting and comforting....
The mix also coincides with the release of my latest album 'Time Beyond The Edges' - an album of collaboration pieces with fellow ambient artists and experimental composers from around the globe, which came out on Shady Ridge Records on Sept 26th. The mix is bookended by two of the tracks from this release..."

| Some Good Train Songs by Paul Asbury Seaman | 24 Sep 2025 | 01:15:21 | |
More than 8 years ago, Paul Asbury Seaman came to me with an idea for a mix. He would provide the theme and tracklist, and I would man the faders and knobs to create his first guest mix. Of course that first mix was a train-themed set. Now, after 9 railway mixes & many hours traveling on the audio tracks, Paul brings us his tenth train-themed mix. This one is a b it different than the others so I'll let Paul tell you about it: "To celebrate my tenth train mix for Low Light Mixes I’m doing a collection of vocal tracks. There are way too many great train songs to call this set a “Best Of,” thus the qualified title. (I have five CD-length train song mixes for my own use.) These are some of my favorites. And here’s several more to start your own playlists, that didn’t make the cut only because of time limitations: “People Get Ready” (several good versions), “City of New Orleans” (Arlo Guthrie), “Locomotive Breath” (Jethro Tull), “Long Train Runnin’” (Doobie Brothers), “The Midnight Special” (CCR), “Downtown Lights” (Annie Lennox version) and of course “Hear My Train a Comin’” by Jimi Hendrix (from the Winterland LIVE box set)." Thanks, Paul, for another thoughtful collection of songs. Here's to 10 more excursions on the rails. LINKS TO PAUL'S OTHER TRAIN MIXES:

This mix is pretty straightforward - all ambient, all new. It can be hard to keep up with new releases so I decided to put together a nice collection of new 2025 tracks. Turned out pretty darn good if I do say so. Cheers!

| FIFTH SECTOR - Blade Runner Ambiance 2025 | 03 Sep 2025 | 00:58:51 | |
I really didn't intend to follow an 80s themed mix with another mix with an 80s vibe. But I couldn't help myself because of the brand new album from Crows Labyrinth - Neon Scenes II: Echoes of Then https://crowslabyrinth.bandcamp.com/album/neon-scenes-ii-echoes-of-then The album is a follow-up to an album called "Neon Scenes I: Granular Dreams." Both albums are longform generative drone ambient pieces that have this great Blade Runner vibe. I used the first album as the jumping off point for my last Blade Runner themed mix in March 2023 - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/replicant-memories/ Upon hearing this new Crows Labyrinth album I just knew I had to create some more Blade Runner ambiance. This mix started via a Spotify playlist with the same name - "You're in an 80s Film Driving at Night." I really liked the synth vibes so I created my own folder at home and began collecting tracks. The mix has a great retro vibe even though many of the tracks are from the last 10 years. But, of course, I had to include some cuts from the time period with songs from Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter & Vangelis. Hop in your Delorean and head back to the 1980s for some retro electronic goodness. Cheers!

The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks tonight and tomorrow night, August 12th & 13th. I like to use the Perseids as an excuse to create a spacey, ambient mix for stargazing. So here it is. The first track I grabbed for this mix was Jeff Pearce - For The Perseids, from the Gemstones IV compilation. How could I not use that cut in a mix like this. So I decided to look for other tracks with names that would fit and it was fairly easy to find a bunch that worked. Again, how could I resist tunes called "Luminous Dust Trails" and "Night Drifters" and "Comet Tails." Get outside and scan the skies. LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX:

I've been listening to the ECM record label since the 1970s. You can always count on ECM to put out interesting and sometimes great records. My favorite ECM release is Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians." It's not only my favorite ECM album, it's one of my top albums of all-time. A real desert island record for me. A few of my other favorite regular ECM artists are Steve Tibbetts, Eberhard Weber & Pat Metheny. We had a discussion about our favorite ECM recordings over on Mixcloud. You can read or join in the thread here - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/posts/favorite-ecm-albums/ I decided it wouyld be cool to make a mix of my top ten favorite ECM albums. I put it together in chronological order, starting with Ralph Towner & a fantastic version of Icarus. And ending with a 2017 album from Björn Meyer. Please leave a comment with some of your favorites in the comments and enjoy this little journey through ECM. Cheers!

| Pluvial Scansion - guest mix by Benoît Pioulard | 30 Jul 2025 | 01:06:17 | |

I have said many times that I love hosting guest mixes. Whether it's from regular contributors Paul & Erwin or from artists in the ambient space, the mixes expose to new music and artists, and I delight in hearing how someone else approaches the creation of a coherent mix. This new guest mix comes from an ambient artist that I have admired for years - Benoît Pioulard(Tom Meluch). I love his brand of hazy, dreamy ambient music. He has an excellent new album out, which you can find here - https://pioulard.bandcamp.com/album/stanza-iv It's one of my favorite ambient albums of the year so far. The title of this mix is Pluvial Scansion, about which Tom says - "It’s been a rainy spring and summer here, so I think that’s affected some of the overall mood." Here's what he has to say about putting together this mix: "For this mix, I wanted to highlight the work of some very talented friends, and some mellower releases from the past year or so that I've enjoyed during various moments of transit or deep focus. Every track has some form of ambient washiness, and I tried to cover as much of a sonic range as possible within that framework. My latest release is Stanza IV, a limited LP complemented by a collection of reworks by Markus Guentner, James Devane, MJ Guider, arovane, Clarice Jensen, and Viul. Here, I've included an abridged version of one of the album tracks, along with the arovane piece, but you can hear the whole thing at pioulard.bandcamp.com, and subscribe for a ton of exclusive work plus new stuff every month, at pioulard.bandcamp.com/subscribe .. and, if you're in Tokyo on August 18th, come see me perform with Satomimagae! Hope you'll enjoy the playlist <3 Thanks for this well-crafted collection. Cheers!

The king of berlin-school music returns with another stellar mix. Our friend, Erwin Boers, was nice enough to put together a follow up to his spring EM mix with this excellent summer update. Here what he says about this latest set: "For this summer update in the synth-cosmic-Berlin School-electronic-music scene, I faced the same problem as a few months ago with the spring update: a heterogeneous bunch of tracks in a wide variety of moods, rhythms and styles. This time, to produce a coherent mix, I figured telling the "story" of a journey into outer space - not very original I know... ;-) Starting with a couple of upbeat pieces, to depict hectic life on Earth, we then lift off slowly by means of a set of tracks focused on soloing, soundscapes, layered sequencing and space sounds. As we reach the edge of the solar system, several deep contemplative atmospheres invite us to consider the distance travelled and the long journey ahead....I'll leave the scenery of the places visited to the listener's imagination! In short, a pleasant floating audiotrip just under two hours, to be enjoyed day and night, lounging in the shade or stargazing on your back. Special mention for a fantastic retro track by Xan Alexander in pure Berlin School style, a bit of electric guitar bombast by Otarion aka Rainer Klein and a pick from ex-Tangerine Dream member Peter Baumann's latest album "Nightfall"." | Whitelabrecs Vinyl Mix | 09 Jul 2025 | 00:55:17
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE0Lc17qSmpwVYbNwxRNnxVuQ9X7uNjGY52qIfDm5RJY6l3G0w_Fi9mmhXmOUX4X2egLlQFkjiOKc66sq2sNwPItiMKrWKZiF4KIm9vCX9oknB4JfGVDIjgGjpoTMPZpUMc1f-N0nBiJXh17c-SzPrR1xCz_kF1ShQ72bMKi472XoWrGAdKXe3/s1500/Cover%20Option%20A.PNG
Without question one of the best ambient record labels in the world is Whitelabrecs . I've known label owner, Harry Towell, for a long time, going back to his netlabel days with Audio Gourmet. It's been grand to follow along as Harry has grown musically and the label has become a juggernaut. That's why I am beyond excited to present a guest mix from Harry. The bonus is it's an all vinyl mix. Here's a little blurb from Harry about his mix: "My name’s Harry and I make music as Glåsbird. I’m from Lincolnshire in the UK and I also run a record label called Whitelabrecs. The label has been going since 2016 and specialises in limited edition runs of vinyl effect CDrs in classic vinyl sleeve formats, such as the gatefold LP and mini 45. Vinyl is a massive inspiration for this label and this all started in my earlier years in music, when I was a DJ. I’d collect a range of Deep House, Techno and Downtempo records and mix these at gigs, at a time when CD-Js and digital mixing was becoming the norm. I bought my Technics 1210s in 2004 as a second-hand purchase from another DJ. I’ve kept them all this time and they had deteriorated to the point where the tonearms would get stuck and so they had been gathering dust for a few years. This year I got them repaired and serviced, replacing the cartridges and styli - now they’re in perfect working order! Since my former DJ years my music taste has changed considerably and this has been developed over the course of the last 15+ years, running the Audio Gourmet, Tessellate and Whitelabrecs labels which focus on quieter Ambient music. I’ll be doing more of these vinyl mixes from time to time and also have my first live DJ gig confirmed for September. I recorded this vinyl mix one lunchtime after selecting and planning the first 10 tracks using the Camelot Harmonic Mixing method, which is a great way to create a natural-feeling melodic flow. It is a pretty reliable workflow but sometimes doesn’t translate – see the transition between tracks 2 and 3 as an example! I was enjoying this mix so much, that from tracks 11 onwards I switched to mixing on the fly, selecting tracks by ear.
I’d call this an Ambient mix overall but there’s a nice range of sub-styles in this selection, from drones and electronica, electro-acoustic and modern classical to folk and ethnic sounds." Thanks, Harry, for creating this excellent set. Cheers!

I am a big fan of ambient dub music. Especially the more atmospheric stuff from DeepChord, Rod Modell, Variant, cv313, Shorelights and more. I've made ambient dub mixes in the past and they are some of my favorites. For this dubby mix I decided to focus on artists from the echospace [detroit] record label. Is echospace a label or an artist? I think it's both. And then there is Deepchord presents Echospace and Echospace [sounds] Presents, which confuses things even more. All I know is, I like the sounds that Echospace & Deepchord produce so I made a mix featuring those sounds. Cheers!

For some strange reason I have not been listening to as much pure ambient music as I normally do. I've been playing a lot of jazz lately. And I am still devouring a ton of electronic/berlin school music. So it's perfect timing that friend of the show, Erwin Broers, has come up with a pair of awesome mixes in the genre. I'll let Erwin tell you all about this new mix: "Here's a follow-up on my Fall 2024 mix "Back To The Roots Of Berlin School". So I thought about creating a mix of some classic pieces from that first era, but soon found out one mix would not be enough to do justice to all the fantastic "Cosmic Music" that was made back then." This is an amazing trip that couldn't be contained in a normal hour-long mix so we get 2hours of electronic bliss. Thanks Erwin! Cheers!

| Dark Woods by Daniel Hawkins | 03 Jun 2025 | 00:56:49 | |
I've fallen behind a bit on creating and uploading mixes. But have no fear, it's Daniel Hawkins to the rescue! He's come up with a guest mix at just the right time. You'll remember Daniel form his previous mix, "Metallic Memories" - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/metallic-memories/ For this set he takes us into the modern classical realm. Here's what Daniel has to say about this new mix: "I was thinking about some of the nice Neo-classical/crossover stuff I like and then got to thinking about the way having a label for a style of music can actually be a limiting factor. The best creative work in any field so often transcends genres and labels and breaks new ground - Issak Dinsen said “A work of art is a thing of infinite loneliness and the least to be understood through criticism.” I remember back in the 1970’s playing Keith Jarret’s solo piano albums and my friends asking what kind of music it was. What do you say? Back then they stocked it in the jazz section of the record store with the other ECM releases, but I have never thought of that body of work as jazz. Music continues to evolve - Ambient? Chillout? Drone? Electronic? Tribal? Names and more names. So what do you call this collection of cello music? Is it classical because it features an instrument that is typically found in an orchestral setting? Personally I don’t think we need a label. I know good music when I hear it. The mix leans to the somber side - something strings do so well - deep and evocative. Explorations of the dark night of the soul." Thanks, Daniel, for another excellent mix! Cheers! Oh man, this is a good one. Well, all the mixes here are good but for some reason this one resonates with me right now. Two years ago I posted a mix called "Walk Softly Upon This Earth" that featured the handpan as the main instrument - https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/walk-softly-upon-this-earth/ I love that mix and have always wanted to do a follow up. Then in April a new EP dropped that I immediately fell in love with and it prompter me to create this mix. The EP is called "Kalima" from Lab's Cloud in collaboration with Falvio Salvaje. Check it out here - https://labscloudmusic.bandcamp.com/album/kalima The rest of the mix is collection of some truly excellent handpan music with my favorite, other than the tracks from "Kalima," being "Passage IV" from Laura Inserra. It combines handpan and electric guitar in a beautiful way. Links to all the music used in this mix:

This is straightforward ambient mix. Nothing fancy, just good music. The one unifying trait of this mix, other than all the tracks being awesome, is that everything is from this year. I started the set with a track from Alio Die. Every so often I need a reminder why I love an artist I've been listening to forever. And stumbling upon this new album definitely brought back why Alio Die is one of my all-time favs. LINKS TO ALL THER MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX:

| Berlin School Electronic Music 2025 Spring Update | 24 Apr 2025 | 01:47:58 | |
More Berlin School goodness from Erwin Broers. There's not much I can say about this mix, other than being totally psyched for it, so I'll let Erwin give you the lowdown. "This mix is an overview of some of the interesting Berlin School Electronic releases of the current calendar year. There's a wide variety of styles, ranging from minimal and retro to loungy/chilled and bombastic/cinematic. Actually, this selection covers the whole spectrum of electronic music between ambient and synth pop. So maybe the label "Berlin School" is not adequate anymore. But hey what's in a name! In any case, unless you're a hard core ambient fan, you will certainly discover something to your liking. Check the links below and support the artists!" Thanks, Erwin, for another great Berlin School set. Cheers! T R A C K L I S T :

Seascape mixes are some of my favorite ambient mixes. The genre seems to perfectly suited to floating and drifting on an endless sea. Two of my favorite ambient tracks of all time are "sea" ambient - https://marsenjules.bandcamp.com/track/submarine-poetry https://infraction.bandcamp.com/track/the-most-beautiful-blue I absolutely love those two tracks! I'm always up for a new seascape mix and that's what we have here - a new collection of tracks mostly from 2023 & 2024, with one from 2020 and one from all the way back in 2008. Put the oars back in the boat, kick your feet up and drift away.
Cheers!

| Electronic Gems From The Lowlands by Erwin Broers | 10 Apr 2025 | 01:15:10 | |

Another electronic gem from Erwin Broers. He has become my go to guy for berlin-school music and I'm totally here for it. I've said many times that I like hosting guest mixes from artists and listeners because I always discover new music. And this set is a perfect example - other than Ron Boots, every artist in this mix is new to me.
Here's what Erwin has to say about this mix: "The theme this time is "Electronic Gems From The Lowlands", the lowlands being Belgium and the Netherlands. Both countries are neighbours of Germany, where Electronic Music took off in the early 1970s. It was therefore inevitable that many local progressive artists became fascinated by synthesizers and inspired by this new genre known as "Kosmische Musik" (cosmic music). Influence of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze is obvious, but there's also a hint at prog rock and a few tracks come close to melodic synth pop similar to Vangelis and Jean Michel Jarre." Thanks for a great set, Erwin! Cheers!

| Piano Day 2025 | 29 Mar 2025 | 01:02:20 | |

It's World Piano Day! I've made several mixes over the years for Piano Day and each time I wonder if I'll find enough tracks for an interesting mix. And every year it comes together and surprises me with how much I like the finished set. This mix starts with a tune everyone should be familiar with - Eno's Music For Airports 1/2. This recording is by Bruce Brubaker from his fine EP - Eno Piano 2. To make things interesting I played two tracks from it simultaneously and I think it worked pretty well. While collecting tracks for the mix I was happy to find a piano album from Daniel Lanois. It's from 2022 and I had no idea it existed. I'm a big fan of the Necks so I was also excited to use one of their tracks for the first time. At least I think I've never used their music in a mix before. LINKS TO ALL THE MUSIC USED IN THIS MIX:
I hope you enjoy this latest installment in celebration of the piano. Cheers!

| The Spirit of Talk Talk | 19 Mar 2025 | 01:02:34 | |

Talk Talk is an interesting band. Their musical style evolved significantly over time, moving from synth-pop to a more experimental art rock and post-rock sound, particularly with the albums 'Spirit of Eden' and 'Laughing Stock'. I like every phase of their career but I especially love the album 'Spirit of Eden'. Those last two albums have grown in stature and influence over the decades, inspiring countless musicians with their innovative use of space, silence, and unconventional song structures. It's no wonder that an ambient focused person like me would glom onto Talk Talk when you consider band leader, Mark Hollis's often-quoted sentiment about the importance of silence in music – "Before you play two notes, learn how to play one note... and don't play one note unless you've got a reason to". Recently a favorite podcast of mine, Discord & Rhyme, dedicated an episode to 'Spirit of Eden'. It's totally worth a listen. You can find here - https://discordpod.com/listen/155-talk-talk-spirit-of-eden-1988 After listening to that episode I decided to make a mix of tracks with a 'Spirit of Eden' feel. I used a few tracks recommended by the guys in the podcast - Bark Psychosis, Van Morrison, and Mile Davis. And combined those with 7 other cuts that fit the vibe. I always knew that Rain Tree Crow/Sylvian/Jansen/Barbieri would be a perfect fit. I was excited to use one of my favorite albums of 2022 - 'The Great Awakening' by Shearwater. I had forgotten how much I love that record. Are there any Talk Talk fans out there? What do you think of this collection of Talk Talk inspired tunes? Cheers!

| Metallic Memories | 12 Mar 2025 | 00:53:11 | |
Another stellar guest mix comes our way with this excellent set from longtime listener, Daniel Hawkins. He reached with an idea for a mix and once I heard the theme I was all in. Daniel curated a playlist of tracks & I put them together to create this new mix. Here's what Daniel has to say about Metallic Memories: "So I've loved world music since before that term existed, and always had an inordinate fondness for the metallophones - gamelan, vibraphone, glockenspiel, Tibetan bowls - should we include tubular bells? Of course! I don't know if the kalimba and marimba are technically in the category, but they are in my mind. Wind chimes, tingshas, koshis, steel drum, handpan, gongs, avant-garde stuff done with trash cans and pipes - it's all good. This playlist leaves out a ton of music that Dave has covered over the years that is near and dear to me - but I wanted to do what he does so well - bring new artists to everyone's attention and still make a killer playlist. I'd thought for a looooong time about putting something together for Low Light Mixes and was so pleased with Dave's gracious response." Thanks, Daniel, for this excellent collection of metallophone music! Links to all the music used in this mix: Ethereal Planes - Moonlit Passage Brian Eno - 77 Million Paintings Cheers!
