Set in the neon-drenched chaos of Night City, this open-world RPG blends cyberware upgrades, branching narratives, high-speed gunplay, and existential dread into one sprawling, synth-soaked package. Whether you came for Keanu Reeves, the hacking, or the moral ambiguity, this is a game that swings big and refuses to be subtle.

At the time of recording, Cyberpunk 2077 holds a Metacritic score of 86 on PC and 87 on Xbox Series X. Trekking through Ubisoft Montpellier's Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, released on January 18, 2024, we're catapulted into a 2.5D realm where action-adventure meets platforming and Metroidvania. The game introduces Sargon, navigating the cursed city of Mount Qaf to save Prince Ghassan. With time-manipulating powers, Sargon embarks on a puzzle-filled journey, encountering allies and foes in a story-rich landscape. Unique mechanics and a connected world enrich this installment of the Prince of Persia series, offering a deep dive into Persian mythology and action-packed gameplay.

At the time of recording, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has a Metacritic score of 86. According to How Long to Beat, it can take upwards of 30 hours to complete the game in full. They list main story completion at 165 hours, but that feels too short for a first time playthrough.

The duo dive into a Metroidvania double‑header: first the seminal Hollow Knight (Team Cherry, 2017) and then its long‑awaited sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong (Team Cherry, 2025). We unpack the evolution of the form — bug‑infested kingdoms, needle‑wielding protagonists, soaring difficulty curves — while comparing how the first game laid the groundwork and Silksong raised the bar (and the anguish). Two games, one legacy, endless edge‑of‑your‑seat platforming.

 Hollow Knight earned a Metacritic score of 87 on PC and 90 on Switch. HowLongToBeat estimates place a standard full play‑through around 27 hours (main story) and up to ~65 hours for completionists. Silksong debuted with a Metacritic score of 91 (PC), classified under “universal acclaim”. Play time estimates suggest around 40‑45 hours for a meaningful run, with full completion pushing closer to 60 hours+. Luke and Alex dive into the infinity loop of "Loop Hero," a uniquely designed endless RPG by the ingenious minds at Russian studio Four Quarters, and brought to life by Devolver Digital.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world that's been wiped out by an evil lich, you, the hero, are on a mission to reconstruct your reality. You're not alone though – you'll encounter survivors who'll either aid your world-building efforts or, in despair, attack you for their own survival.

But the plot thickens. The evil lich is merely a puppet. The real villain? None other than God himself, Omega, on a twisted quest for self-destruction. Can you defeat Omega and keep rebuilding in his absence? With a little help from the Goddess of Probability, you might just stand a chance.

Gameplay is where "Loop Hero" truly shines. Each expedition is a new journey on a pre-generated path, where you fight slimes, collect landscape cards, and alter the terrain around you. Equip your hero with the spoils of battle, construct new structures back at your base, and choose your path strategically to survive increasingly difficult enemies.

Inscryption is a psychological horror, rouguelike deck-building game that has been praised for its unique blend of genres and captivating storytelling. Developed by Daniel Mullins Games and published by Devolver Digital, the game takes players on a dark and twisted journey through a mysterious forest. Along the way, players must gather cards, build a deck, and use their strategic skills to battle against a variety of terrifying creatures.

What sets Inscryption apart from other deck-building games is its innovative gameplay mechanics, which incorporate elements of puzzle-solving, exploration, and even escape room-style challenges. Each card in the game has its own unique abilities, and players must use these cards to overcome obstacles, defeat enemies, and uncover the secrets of the forest. With a gripping storyline and unexpected twists and turns, Inscryption is a must-play for fans of horror, puzzle, and deck-building games alike.

Inscryption was released for Windows on October 19, 2021. It was released on Linux and macOS on June 22, 2022, which was followed by PlayStation 4 and 5 versions in August. A Nintendo Switch port was released in December 2022. Versions for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S released in April 2023. Inscryption has received generally positive reviews and won several Game of the Year awards. The game sold 1 million copies by January 2022. As of publication of this podcast, the PC version of the game has a Metascore of 85 and a User Score of 8.6 on metacritic.com.

Luke and Alex talk The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game developed and published by CD Projekt Red. The game takes place in a fictional fantasy world based on Slavic mythology. You control Geralt of Rivia, a monster slayer for hire known as a Witcher, and search for his adopted daughter Ciri who is on the run from the otherworldly Wild Hunt. Players battle the game's many dangers with weapons and magic, interact with non-player characters, and complete quests to acquire experience points and gold, which are used to increase Geralt's abilities and purchase equipment. The game's story has three possible endings, determined by the player's choices at key points in the narrative.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was released for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One in May 2015, with a Nintendo Switch version released in October 2019, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions titled The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition which was released in December 2022. The game received critical acclaim, with praise for its gameplay, narrative, world design, combat, and visuals, although it received minor criticism due to technical issues. It holds more than 200 game of the year awards and has been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. As of publication of this podcast, the PC version of the game has a Metascore of 93 and a User Score of 9.1 on metacritic.com.

Alex played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on his PC and Steam Deck, he first played the game on his Nintendo Switch. Luke first played the game on his PS4, but this time around played on the Xbox Series X. Both hosts have beaten the base game. Alex has finished the Heats of Stone Expansion and has started Blood and Wine. Luke has dabbled in both DLCs but hasn't finished either. This was Luke's second time beating the base game. Alex didn't replay the base game for this episode, but rather took the opportunity to continue questing for all the Witcher gear and to tackle the game's DLC for the first time.

Alex and Luke Talk Celeste.

Celeste is a platform game developed and published by indie developer Matt Makes Games. The player controls Madeline, a protagonist with anxiety and depression who aims to climb Celeste Mountain. During their climb, Madeline encounters several characters, including a personification of her self-doubt known as Badeline, who attempts to stop her from climbing the mountain.

Celeste released on January 25, 2018, for Linux, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows, before being released on Xbox One the following day, and on Google Stadia in July 2020. Upon release, it received universal acclaim from critics, with multiple outlets describing it as one of the best video games of all time. As of publication, Nintendo Switch version of the game has a Metascore of 92 and a User Score of 8.6 on metacritic.com.

Alex played Celeste  on his Nintendo Switch, primarily in handheld mode. He finished the game docked using a pro controller. Luke also played on the Nintendo Switch, but primarily docked.  Both hosts rolled the credits on this one, but neither has tackled the epilogue.

High on Life is a comedic first-person shooter game with action-adventure and Metroidvania elements. It takes place in a science fiction world which features talking guns called Gatlians. The game was published by Squanch Games and was released on December 13, 2022 for Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. As of publication, the Xbox Series X version of the game has a Metascore of 67 and a User Score of 7.9 on metacritic.com.

Alex and Luke both played High on Life  on the Xbox Series X via Xbox Game Pass. Both hosts rolled the credits on this one.

Alex and Luke talk Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is a 2018 platform game developed and published by Inti Creates. It is a companion title to developer ArtPlay's 2019 game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and was conceived to fulfill the promise for a retro-style accompaniment to Ritual of the Night after its Kickstarter campaign exceeded crowdfunding goals. Curse of the Moon follows Zangetsu, a cursed swordsman hunting down demons for revenge, as well as three other playable characters named Miriam, Alfred and Gebel. It features an 8-bit aesthetic and gameplay style similar to Castlevania games on the Nintendo Entertainment System, particularly Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.

Alex and Luke both played Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon on the Nintendo Switch. Alex rolled the credits, Luke did not. Luke is decidedly bad at Metroidvanias.

Luke and Alex talk Super Mario World.

Super Mario World is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was released in Japan in 1990, North America in 1991 and Europe and Australia in 1992.

Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development developed the game, led by director Takashi Tezuka and producer and series creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Koji Kondo acted as the game’s composer.

The player controls Mario on his quest to save Princess Toadstool and Dinosaur Land from the series' antagonist Bowser and his minions, the Koopalings. The gameplay is similar to that of earlier Super Mario games: players control Mario or his brother Luigi through a series of levels in which the goal is to reach the goalpost at the end. Super Mario World introduced Yoshi, a dinosaur who can eat enemies, as well as gain abilities by eating the shells of Koopa Troopas.

Super Mario World is often considered one of the best games in the series and is cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. It sold more than twenty million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling SNES game.

Luke and Alex played Super Mario World  on the Nintendo Switch via NSO. Alex also played a good chunk of the Game Boy Advance version of the game.

Alex and Luke Talk Cult of the Lamb.

Ever wanted to combine dungeon crawling, base management, and theological terror into one cozy indie experience? That’s exactly the blend Cult of the Lamb serves. Developed by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, this darkly adorable roguelike management mash-up dropped on August 11, 2022. You play a resurrected lamb who must build a loyal cult, perform rituals, and crusade through twisted lands to free a mysterious deity. It’s cute, creepy, and weirdly compelling.

On Metacritic, Cult of the Lamb scores an 82 (PC) among critics. According to reviews and “How Long to Beat,” a standard playthrough lands in the 15–20 hour range. Go for completion, side content, or cult perfection, and it stretches further. It’s a neat balance point: deep enough to feel meaningful, short enough to avoid burnout.

Both hosts tackled this one on their Steam Decks, with Alex also dipping into the PC version for a spell. Neither of them made it to the ultimate “credits roll” — instead, they got deep into the loops, the rituals, and the existential questions of lamb-leadership. They came away with both love and critiques of the pacing, combat variety, and the inevitable moral compromise.

Alex and Luke talk Portal and Portal 2.

Portal is a 2007 puzzle-platform game developed and published by Valve. It was released in a bundle, The Orange Box, for Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and has been since ported to other systems, including Mac OS X, Linux, Android (via Nvidia Shield), and Nintendo Switch. The game consists of a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player's character and simple objects using "the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device", often referred to as the "portal gun", a device that can create inter-spatial portals between two flat planes.

Portal 2  is a 2011 puzzle-platform video game developed by Valve for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The digital PC version is distributed online by Valve's Steam service, while all retail editions were distributed by Electronic Arts. A port for the Nintendo Switch was included as part of Portal: Companion Collection. Like the original, players solve puzzles by placing portals and teleporting between them. Portal 2 adds features including tractor beams, lasers, light bridges, and paint-like gels that alter player movement or allow portals to be placed on any surface. In the single-player campaign, players control Chell, who navigates the dilapidated Aperture Science Enrichment Center during its reconstruction by the supercomputer GLaDOS

Alex played Portal and Portal 2 on the Steam Deck while Luke played Portal: Companion Collection on the Nintendo Switch.

Stray is an adventure platformer puzzler developed by Blue Twelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive. The story follows a stray cat who falls into a walled city populated by robots, machines, and mutant bacteria, and sets out to return to the surface with the help of a drone companion called B-12.

Stray was announced in 2020 and became highly anticipated. Following some delays, it was released on 19 July 2022, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Windows. It received generally positive reviews, with particular praise directed at its artistic design, cat gameplay, narrative, original score, and platforming elements; critics were divided on the combat and stealth sequences.

Isiah and Nick played Stray on their Windows PCs. Alex also played a little of the game on PC, but primarily played on the Steam Deck.

Luke and Alex talk about semiotic domains and learning from video games.

In our first companion podcast, Alex and Luke talk about Luke’s Low Five Education Project article on semiotic domains in further detail. A brief history and bio of author James Paul Gee is given before explaining his concept of semiotic domains and the active learning that takes place when playing video games. Although Gee’s work in his book, What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy, holds up today, the video game references and examples within are very much outdated. (This is to be expected given its original publishing was in 2003.) After going over some major points on domain learning and how it influenced the education project, Alex and Luke each highlight more modern video games that exemplify semiotic domain learning. Luke comes in with a particularly social studies and classroom specific context, while Alex highlights games that more casual or at home players may enjoy.

Luke and Alex talk Cities: Skylines.

Cities: Skylines is a city-building game developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox Interactive. The game is a single-player open-ended city-building simulation. Players engage in urban planning by controlling zoning, road placement, taxation, public services, and public transportation of an area. They also work to manage various elements of the city, including its budget, health, employment, and pollution levels. It is also possible to maintain a city in a sandbox mode, which provides more creative freedom for the player.

Cities: Skylines was first released for the Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems in March 2015, with ports to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 game consoles being released in 2017, for the Nintendo Switch in September 2018, and for Google Stadia in May 2022 developed by Tantalus Media. The game received favorable reviews from critics, and was a commercial success, with more than twelve million copies sold on all platforms as of June 2022.

Both Luke and Alex played Cities: Skylines on their Windows PCs.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is a beat 'em up game developed by Tribute Games and published by Dotemu. It's based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise and is inspired by the 1987 Turtles animated series. The game borrows stylistically from the arcade and home console games developed by Konami during the 1980s and 1990s.

Shredder's Revenge was released for Windows, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on June 16, 2022.

Both Luke and Alex played Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge on the Nintendo Switch and were joined by friend of the podcast, Ace, when playing co-op.

Luke and Alex talk Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a 2018 action-adventure game developed and published by Rockstar Games. The game is the third entry in the Red Dead series and a prequel to the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption. The story is set in 1899 and follows the exploits of outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang, in a fictionalized representation of the Western, Midwestern, and Southern United States. Arthur must deal with the decline of the Wild West whilst attempting to survive against government forces, rival gangs, and other adversaries.

Red Dead Redemption was released for the PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018, Microsoft Windows on November 5, 2019, and Stadia on November 19, 2019.

The game is considered by many to be one of the best games ever made.

This was Luke's second time playing Red Dead Redemption 2. It was Alex's first experience with the game. Luke played on the PS4 and Alex played on PC.

Alex and Luke talk Half-Life and Black Mesa.

Half-Life is a 1998 first-person shooter game developed by Valve and published by Sierra Studios for Windows. It was Valve's debut product and the first game in the Half-Life series. Players assume the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist who must escape the Black Mesa Research Facility after it is invaded by aliens. The gameplay consists of combat, exploration and puzzle-solving. Unlike other games of its time, the player has almost uninterrupted control of the player character, and the story is told mostly in scripted sequences rather than cutscenes.

Black Mesa is a 2020 first-person shooter game developed and published by Crowbar Collective. It is a third-party remake of Half-Life (1998) made in the Source game engine. Originally published as a free mod in September 2012, Black Mesa was approved by Half-Life developers Valve for a commercial release; the first commercial version was published as an early-access version in May 2015, followed by a full release in March 2020 for Microsoft Windows and Linux.

Alex played Half-Life and Luke played Black Mesa. This was their first experience with both games.

Luke and Alex talk Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a 3D platformer Kirby game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. The game was announced in a Nintendo Direct on September 23, 2021 and released worldwide on March 25, 2022. It's the first platform game in the series with full 3D gameplay.

Alongside returning copy abilities, Kirby and the Forgotten Land introduces two new copy abilities in the form of Drill and Ranger. There's also an upgrade system for copy abilities and a new "Mouthful Mode" where Kirby can swallow and control larger objects, such as cars and vending machines.

Both Luke and Alex rolled the credits on the game.

Alex and Luke Talk The Plucky Squire.

What if a storybook adventure literally jumped off the page? That’s the magic trick The Plucky Squire pulls off. Developed by All Possible Futures and published by Devolver Digital, this imaginative action-adventure launched in July 2024 and instantly stood out for its clever transitions between 2D and 3D gameplay. With a charming visual style, punchy combat, and playful surprises around every corner, it’s a game that wears its heart—and its gimmick—on its sleeve.

At the time of recording, The Plucky Squire held a Metacritic score of 83 on PC and 72 on Nintendo Switch. According to HowLongToBeat, the main story clocks in around 8.5 hours, though that can stretch with exploration (and admiring the delightful art direction). It’s short, sweet, and stylistically sharp—but not without a few rough edges.

Alex played on Nintendo Switch, Luke on Steam Deck. Both made it to the final page and rolled credits. This is one of those rare games where the journey was as fun to talk about as it was to play—especially when it leapt from side-scroller to Zelda-lite to rhythm brawler to full-on tank sequence. You just have to see it to believe it.

Dead Cells was developed by Motion Twin. It's a rogue-lite, metroidvania inspired, action-platformer (“Rougeuvania”). You explore a sprawling, ever-changing castle... assuming you’re able to fight your way past its keepers in 2D souls-lite combat. No checkpoints. Kill, die, learn, repeat.

Early access for Dead Cells was released for Linux, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on August 7, 2018. A mobile port for iOS was released on August 28, 2019 and an Android port was released on June 3, 2020.

This was both Luke and Alex's first experience with the game. They played on the Nintendo Switch. Alex rolled the credits. Luke did not. He's been demoted to a lower case "g" gamer.

Luke and Alex talk Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and Published by Bethesda Softworks. It was first released in November of 2011,  and is the fifth game in the Elder Scrolls series. Upon release, the game received critical acclaim and is considered by many to be one of the greatest video games of all time.

Skyrim has since been ported to just about everything: Windows, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. 2021 marked the game's 10th Anniversary, which was celebrated with the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Anniversary Edition.

This was Luke's return to Skyrim after ten years, and Alex's first experience with the game. Both played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition via Steam on Windows.

Alex and Luke revisit The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was released in November of 1998 and is the fifth game in the Legend of Zelda series. The first with 3D graphics. OoT is critically acclaimed and often considered the godfather of open world gaming. In fact, according to Metacritic, it's the best game of all time!

Ocarina of Time has been ported to the GameCube, Wii, WiiU, iQue Player, and most recently to the Nintendo Switch via their Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) service. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D for the Nintendo 3DS refreshed the Nintendo 64 classic, adding 3D visuals, updated graphics, and polished gameplay. Both Luke and Alex played countless hours of Ocarina of Time on 64 in their youth. For this playthrough, Luke revisited Hyrule via NSO, and Alex played the 3DS version for the first time.
