In this episode you will take a deep dive into what Aviation Security is all about and hear from an established Global Expert in this topic - Andrew McGowan from Delta Airlines. Andrew joined the Royal Air Force straight from college as a (very young) Policeman and went on to serve for 22 years in various roles including general Policing, Nuclear Weapon Security, Aviation Security, and VIP Security. He completed operational tours, in Afghanistan as part of the NATO ISAF Military Police force in Kabul, and later in Iraq on the UK’s Operation Herrick deployment. His last 8 years in the RAF saw him posted to Number 32 (The Royal) Squadron where he had responsibility for the security planning and execution of RAF flights carrying the UK’s Royal Family members and UK Government ministers including the PM. In 2012, his RAF days came to an end and he formally retrained in Aviation Security Management, going on to work for Thomson Airways (now TUI Airlines) as the Airline Security Manager. Since 2017 Andrew has been serving as a Regional Corporate Security Manager for Delta Airlines, covering Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. In this role, Andrew helps protect the airline’s customers, staff, and assets from any unlawful acts and security risks across the region, working closely with Airport Security departments, various Governmental Security organisations, Law Enforcement agencies, and equivalent teams in other Airlines. In his spare time, Andrew is a British Swimming Technical Official, and his highlight (so far) has been officiating at the Swim England National Finals at Sheffield in 2025. After raising my family I indulged in my passion of horses and being a competitor competed in my first International Dressage test four years later. This led to me becoming a Performance Coach for Equestrians and a MSc in Sports Coaching. I soon realised that the challenges I was helping people with in sport were the same that people face in every day life including anxiety around flying. Meet Lola! Lola Reid Allin is a former Airline Transport Pilot who worked as a pilot for the Ontario Government and DeHavilland/Flight Safety, a Class I flight instructor, and the first female Chief Flying Instructor at Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre. In addition, she is a professional SCUBA Dive Master and an award-winning photographer and author whose work has appeared in national and international publications, including National Post, National Geographic, Globe & Mail, Verge: Travel with Purpose, Toronto Star, Grapevine, and Santa Fe Centre for Photography. Lola is an adventurer whose art and writing reflects the world vision of her experience. In addition to a three-year residency in Mexico, she’s explored more than 65 countries in depth — under water and on foot, and by dogsled, jeep, and camel. To share her adventures & photographs, to provide a showcase for other photographers, and to inspire others to travel—she created the Armchair Traveller Travelogue in 2017. In addition to these personally narrated travel and adventure presentations, Lola does outreach presentations to promote the role of women in aviation/STEM careers. Her professional associations include The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots, Women in Aviation International, and The Writers’ Union of Canada. As Head of Flight Operations at the CAA I have responsibility for the oversight of all commercial aircraft operations; oversight of commercial Approved Training Organisations, and for the standards of Flight Crew Licensing, Instructors and Examiners. I have been in that role since 2019, having been in the CAA as Flight Ops Manager - Aeroplanes role for 2½ years overseeing fixed wing commercial activity. Prior to joining the CAA I was at easyJet for 10 years in various roles including Head of Aircraft Ops, responsible for safety, technical, cabin safety, EFB, performance and airports/routes. I was also a Functional Check Flight Capt for A320 family aircraft as well as TRI and TRE. Before being bought by easyJet I was at GB Airways for 10 years as Flight Manager Technical covering similar areas and check flight activity. I spent 12 years in the RAF mainly flying Tornado GR1/GR1As based in Germany and UK and flying in operational theatres of Northern and Southern Iraq, qualified as an IRE and ACO. With a period as a Simulator Instructor on Harrier GR5/7. I am still a current A320 Capt, TRI, TRE, SE and Training Inspector, and GA Pilot with a share in a Beagle Pup. John has had an awesome aviation career and just loves it! Talking about safety, flying, preparing and what it takes to be a pilot. John graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science Double Major in Aviation Flight Science and Aviation Administration. He holds an ATP MEL/Commercial SEL, CFI-CFII ASEL, and has several type ratings, the most recent of which is a Gulfstream G-VII earned in 2023. John has conducted flight instruction in many different environments 61/141 and also acted as a jet charter training captain on Lear 45/75. John also spent 14 years as the Program Director for the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI). Today, John works for a Fortune 500 corporate flight department flying all over the world. He also has a passion for aviation outreach using his past NAFI and corporate platforms to mentor and speak with young future aviation professionals at local high schools and universities with an aviation focus.
