Episode 148. How to Intentionally Design the Marriage You Want with Dr. Manish Desai09 Apr 202401:01:26

In this episode, Dr. Manish, shares the story of his relationship with his wife, Seema and how they have intentionally designed a relationship where they each have more than enough ā€œfree timeā€. From their first encounter, where Manish impulsively embraced Seema despite having never met her before, Manish knew she was special.Ā

Dr. Desai reflects on the initial attraction, drawn by the alignment of their backgrounds and values. Although their chemistry was real, Manish admits that the early years of their marriage were marked by disagreements rooted in their differing family dynamics—Seema's reserved upbringing contrasted with Manish's more vocal background.Ā

Trough introspection and mutual growth, they have navigated challenges such as Seema's post-partum depression and the pressures of their demanding schedules.Ā

Together, they discovered the importance of prioritizing wellness and lifestyle over financial gain, finding joy in shared activities like workouts and walks. Ultimately, their story illustrates the power of love, authenticity, and the journey of self-discovery within a marriage, culminating in a symbolic helicopter ride representing their united journey through life's highs and lows.

Episode 128. Mirroring: The Power Couple’s Relationship Hack18 Sep 202300:23:15

This technique can get you unstuck.

Have you ever seen those older couples in action?…you know…the ones who have been married for 20 or 30 years. They are so in sync. They are in tune. They walk to the same cadence and communicate with the same lingo. This is not a coincidence. This is neuroplasticity at its finest. Through struggles and joys, these couples are in tune with each other’s needs and wants and do not even realize how much mirroring is actually taking place in their relationship because it becomes their way of living and loving.Ā

Mirroring is a concept in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) that involves subtly matching the behavior, body language, and communication style of another person. When used effectively, mirroring can enhance your relationship with your spouse by fostering rapport, building trust, and creating a deeper sense of connection. Here's how mirroring can be beneficial and some tips to avoid potential pitfalls:

1. Rapport building: Mirroring helps create a sense of familiarity and similarity between partners. By mirroring your spouse's nonverbal cues, such as posture, gestures, or facial expressions, you can establish a subconscious connection that promotes understanding and empathy.

2. Communication enhancement: Mirroring also extends to verbal communication. By matching your spouse's language patterns, tone of voice, and even the speed of speech, you can enhance communication by establishing a more harmonious and comfortable conversation flow.

3. Building trust: Mirroring can help build trust and a sense of validation. When you mirror your spouse, it shows that you are actively listening, understanding, and accepting their perspective. This can create an environment where both partners feel safe to express themselves openly and honestly.

It's important to distinguish mirroring from mimicking. While mirroring is about subtly aligning with your spouse's behavior and communication style, mimicking involves imitating them in a way that may seem insincere or mocking. Mimicking can be detrimental to a relationship, as it may lead to resentment or a lack of authenticity.

To avoid mirroring narcissism, where one partner excessively mirrors the other without maintaining their own identity, consider the following:

1. Maintain individuality: Remember to maintain your own unique personality, opinions, and interests. Healthy mirroring should not entail losing yourself or compromising your values.

2. Balance reciprocity: Mirroring should be a two-way street. Both partners should engage in mirroring behaviors, ensuring a balanced and equal exchange of understanding and connection.

3. Adapt to change: As individuals grow and change over time, it's essential to adapt your mirroring techniques accordingly. Be open to new experiences, perspectives, and communication styles to keep the relationship dynamic and thriving.

Here are a few relationship hacks for building deeper connections and understanding beyond mirroring:

1. Active listening: Practice active listening by giving your spouse your full attention, maintaining eye contact, and responding empathetically. This helps create an atmosphere of trust and understanding.

2. Emotional intelligence: Develop emotional intelligence by being aware of your own emotions and understanding those of your spouse. This allows you to respond appropriately and empathetically to their needs.

3. Quality time: Dedicate quality time to connect and engage in activities that both partners enjoy. This strengthens the bond and creates shared experiences.

4. Express appreciation: Regularly express gratitude and appreciation for your spouse's efforts, qualities, and achievements. This fosters a positive and supportive environment.

5. Foster open communication: Encourage open and honest communication by creating a safe space for your spouse to express their thoughts, concerns, and desires without judgment or criticism.

Ā

Remember, building a deeper connection and understanding in a relationship requires consistent effort, patience, and a willingness to grow together.

Ā

So apparently I make it look easy.

I have been asked by several mothers, physicians, and friends how I do it. Do what??? Make mothering and doctoring look easy? Here's the answer. The SECRET divulged. šŸ¤ŖšŸ’•šŸ¤ŖšŸ’ž Ā  It's not easy, I never pretend it is, and I keep going. I mess up A LOT. And then I keep going. That's it. Period. Ā  I mess up a hella lot. For instance, take today for example. Ā  It’s my half admin day, so I take the kids to school, attend the parents club gathering, and jet off to an in person meeting where I left one of the necessary documents at home in another bag. Ā  I keep going. Next I pick two kids up from half day school, and jet back home to meet our nanny, so she can relieve me for a work teams meeting and coaching zoom call only to realize the teams work meeting had been scheduled an hour earlier than I thought. Ā  I keep going. I then finish up loose ends on some work projects before running out the door again to make a work out class only to get a text from my nanny that she can’t find the minivan keys. Ā  I keep going. I then cancel my work out class as I'm driving away ($15 penalty but who’s counting…it’s more about my missed glutes and thighs session and 40 minutes of back and forth traffic) as I speed (not really) back home to deliver the keys to our nanny so she can take my two youngest to swim lessons an hour late. The entire universe feels a bit thrown off. Ā  I keep going. Here I sit back in my office finding my focus again. Ā  One more zoom collaboration session. One more work teams meeting. One more work social outing. Ā  Total FOMO wathcing coach friends on social arrive in Dallas from all over the world for a coaching event I cannot attend. Ā  One more client to coach at 9pm. And then off to bed. I just keep going. Ā  Giving myself grace. Ā  Reminding myself to give everyone else grace. How do you make it look easy? I assure you, from the outside, you make it look easy too. Ā  Ā  I would genuinely love to know.

Episode 115. Traveling with Children (& Spouse) by Kate Mangona, MD06 Jun 202300:23:33
2023 UPDATED TRAVEL TIPS
Ā  Ā  Don’t let photos fool you. Ā  Traveling with any amount of littles is stressful which is why I updated my Traveling with Littles Tips. Ā  Don’t even mention that Cata did not even have a ticket 24 hours before the flight and executive decisions had to be made. Ā  Ā  TRAVELING WITH LITTLE TIPS Ā  1. It is never about the destination. Always about the journey. I’ve found this to be deeply true. If we can enjoy the journey, the destination becomes wherever we are at all times. The destination never lasts forever, yet the journey is infinitely present. If we can imagine this, we can create it. Ā  2. In the blink of an eye, emotions will fly. Notice how the face of the tiniest changes drastically from photo one to photo two. If we can accept this, chaos feels so much lighter. This is normal and expected. This is normal and expected. Repeat after me next time your toddler flings themselves on the ground, the other passenger gives you a look, or your preteen rolls their eyes. ā€œThis is normal and expected.ā€ Ā  3. Forgiveness & self-compassion are key. We may do things or say things we are not proud of while our littles are jumping out of their seats, touching the airport bathroom floors, and creating waterfalls of French fries and applesauce. The same goes for our spouse. As parents, we sometimes forget we are on the same team and experience fits of emotions while exchanging uncalculated words. This is normal. Accept it. Give yourself what you need in the moment. Forgive everyone. Move forward. Ā  4. GIVE EVERYONE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT! We never know what may have happened to them earlier that day or week. We do not know the hardships they carry nor the emotions they feel. If you can’t do this, come talk to me. Ā  5. Carry bags of skittles to hand out to all who help you along the way. The airline staff will love you. Friendships will be made.

Episode 113. How to Manage Emotional Flooding in your Marriage22 May 202300:21:07

How to Manage Emotional Flooding in your MarriageĀ

In 3 simple steps (or 5 if you count the 1.5 and 2.5 separately)

Ā

1. BeĀ aware that you indeed are experiencing emotional flooding. What is emotional flooding? It’s when your amygdala hijacks your frontal lobes and you cannot think clearly. If you react during this 20-minute period of flooding, you will likely say, or do something you regret. Awareness is KEY.Ā

1.5 Label your emotions. This is sometimes enough to take the edge off your big emotions which may be erupting and wanting to be heard and seen!

2. Allow the emotion. So much more to be said here.Ā

2.5Ā Shift the focus. For at LEAST 20 minutes, get your mind off the conversation that led to the flooding. For 20 minutes, no ruminating allowed. Listen to the full episode for some examples.Ā

3. Come back to the conversation only when ready. Once you find your calm or your center. Once you can be curious or loving. If you can’t get here, stay on steps 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5. This is super duper important. Maybe you don’t even need to go back to the conversation. This is up to you. Listen to episode 113 for more depth on these tips!
