The Tau are not communists. They're the exact opposite of communists.

Communism believes in:

1. The dictatorship of the proletariat
2. The abolishing of all class and caste systems
3. The right and necessity of the working class to control the means of production
4. The abolishing of private property and the holding of all things in the common good. (NOT the "greater good", that's Utilitarian garbage that means something very different)
5. An actual communist would hate the Tau. The Tau are Plato's Republic. They're rigid, ultra-hierarchical technocrats where a tiny elite caste (the Ethereals) own and control everything .

An actual communist would want to:

1. Abolish the Caste system
2. Kill the Ethereals (The Ethereals are like the pure embodiment of everything Marx hated about western capitalism and oligarchies, the wise philosopher-kings who believe they have the right to control everyone else's lives)
3. Distribute means of production and defense (including technology and weapons) among the different members of the former castes
4. Establish some kind of state council so that things like food and education could be centrally managed and given out to those in need. (Pretty much the exact opposite of what the Tau would want to do).

People who call the Tau "space communists" are either totally ignorant, or they're deliberately playing into the somewhat racist stereotypes of Asian people that the Tau embody. Don't do that. But also have fun.
