This is not really an episode but just a quick chat to explain what happened in June and what is going to happen over the next few months! Exciting news for me is that I have been asked to go on tour with Pub Choir and if you live in a capital city in either Australia or New Zealand, come to a show and say hi! On this episode of the LWICFD! Podcast we have Tour Manager to pretty much every band that ever existed, Benn Newby  🥳

For nearly 20 years, Benn has tour managed many amazing Australian & International bands & artists. I won't name them all here because it would take 10,000 years 😅 but the list includes bands such as Karnivool, Birds of Tokyo, John Butler, Genesis Owusu, Paramore & Death Cab for Cutie to name just a tiny fraction of acts that Benn has toured with in venues from tiny clubs to massive stadiums & everything in between, travelling all around our beautiful country & the globe (including some crazy times to Russia & India, which we hear about during the chat.)

Benn has also been the Artist Relations manager @ Warner Music for a few years, but his most important job out of all of this cool stuff is that of a loving husband and father - I don't know how he does it all but mad respect to Benn & his family & we have a great catch up about how he got into it & some of his adventures along the way. 💥🙌🏼

Happy 1st Birthday to LWICFD!

Thats right, on this day last year (22/8/23) ep#1 dropped & now here we are, all grown up with 31 eps out there & 1 year old!

Whilst also being a day of celebration, it's also a very bittersweet day for me as it also marks the 4yr anniversary of my dear Dad dying. However, rather than sit around & continue to get all depressed & upset at this same time each year, I decided to try & make this day a happier one for me which is why I dropped ep1 on this date, as kind of a tribute to my Dad & also to help me deal with it in my own way. My Dad was a great bloke, he loved music & food & he loved having dinner parties with my Mum & their mates.

Dad was also a Research Scientist & so after he died my Mum, brother & I decided to set up a scholarship in Dads name to assist a PhD student who is researching Glioblastomas (or GBM, which is the type of cancer my Dad had). This year the Tim Trigg Scholarship for Glioblastoma research was awarded for the first time & the person who it was awarded to is my guest on this VERY special episode of LWICFD! 💥

Her name is Jacinda Holtsmark, a PhD student at the University of Sydney where she is working hard to kick GBM in the arse. Jacinda also has an amazing story to tell (that also went viral) about her own journey with cancer & how she met her cancer surgeon (who had operated on her when she was just an infant) by chance during a uni zoom lecture in lockdown 2021!

It is my pleasure to introduce to you Andy Fermo for this episode of LWICFD! Andy served as a Commando in the Australian Defence Force, achieving the rank of Corporal and specialising in Electronic Warfare. He served 2 tours in Afghanistan & upon returning home he realised he was suffering from PTSD. 

Andy tells us of his journey of how he got into the army & some of his time in the war zone & what happened after he came back. He also explains his new project, Invisible Injuries which aims to provide support through connection and ambassadorship to improve the mental health and wellbeing of veterans, first responders (and their immediate support) experiencing PTSD.

In his free time, Andy also is a DJ + proud husband & father & like I wrote above, it was an absolute honour to have Andy on this episode.

Gyroscope were one of the first bands that I was lucky enough to tour with & their live show is non-stop energy💥…they are one of the best & entertaining live bands I have ever had the pleasure of mixing sound for & so I'm very pleased that they are back making fresh tunes for our ear holes 👂🏼& playing more shows for our eye balls 👀 🤘🏼

It's (literally) my neighborino Russell "Rusty" Hopkinson on this episode #23 of LWICFD!

For those that don't already know, Rusty is the drummer in one of Australia's most loved bands You Am I (as well as playing drums or guitar in HEAPS of other bands before he joined YAI & also a few after eg Radio Birdman).

The band being referred to above is Adelaide, SA trio The Mark of Cain & it blows my mind that I have TMOC Bass player Kim Scott as my very special guest on the show this week. 

I started listening to TMOC in 1995 when I first heard a song of theirs called LMA off the "Ill At Ease" record, which I played on repeat & still do to this day. Fast forward to 2006 & lucky old me got asked to do their live sound for a 7 date national tour = Mind. Blown. 🤯

The exciting news is that TMOC have just remastered & released "Ill At Ease" on Gun Metal Grey heavyweight vinyl, as well as an awesome live recording from the 1996 Livid Festival (on Blood Red vinyl 🔥) & they are currently on tour to support this release (tour dates & info 🔗are below)

Just to keep things interesting, right before the tour began Kim had a HORRENDOUS bicycle accident, which could have gone completely to 💩 as he tells us all about it in our chat…so the fact that we even get to hear from him (let alone see him / them play live next week!) is a blessing indeed.

Well hello & welcome to ep. 49 of the LWICFD! Podcast. It's been a minute (I was enjoying the summer 🏝️) so without anymore mucking around my guest for your ear holes is Rob Nassif! 💥

I met Rob over 20yrs ago when he was smashing drums in a band called Gyroscope. Many moons ago I was lucky enough to be invited to tour with Gyros for a few laps of the country as their sound engineer & tour manager and it was very good times!

Rob has now hung up the drumsticks after 20+ years tho and now is the owner of some amazing rehearsal & creative spaces called "The Hen House" in Boorloo, Perth & the newly constructed one in Naarm, Melbourne (which he also manages…) Speaking of management, in his 'spare' time 😅 Rob manages 2 hard working Aussie bands called RedHook & The Faim but most importantly he is a loving & devoted husband & father…man is busy so it was an absolute treat to catch up with him & hear some cool Gyro stories plus find out how he got to where he is now…

As mentioned, I have been fascinated by big trucks, planes & ships since I was a grom & so it was totally rad to have Woodsy on the podcast to explain a little bit more about what he & his company do & what they have planned. Plus hopefully one day on

If you have ever been to see a gig that The Bronx, The Jezabels, The Chats, Frenzal Rhomb, Alex Lahey & many more too numerous to mention were playing, the chances are that Boo was the tour manager & / or guitar / drum / stage tech for that tour. 

Right now he is currently on the road with Grinspoon as they zoom around Oz on their "Easy Detention Tour" 2023. (He's also doing a few shows with The Bronx in the middle of this run too!)

When he's not being a hard-core Road RAT (and I mean that in the nicest possible terms - Boo started a company called Road Agent Touring Services @roadagenttouringservices aka RATS 🐀) he also makes guitars (@good_vibes_guitars) & is a loving & devoted husband & father of 2 little dudes…(btw check out his marriage proposal story it's rad 🧡)

I cannot believe that LWICFD! ep.9 introduces one of my favourite drummers…John Stanier!!!  

John has been a HUGE influence not only on me as I thrash around on a drum kit from time to time, but also on literally MASSES of other drummers / musicians / headbangers around the world 🤘🏼 I totally encourage you to dive deep in all of the bands John has been associated with over the years that I know of - namely Helmet, The Mark of Cain, Tomahawk & most recently, Battles.

During my career in live music, I was extremely lucky enough to be asked to do live sound & tour manage 2 of Johns' bands over the years (The Mark of Cain in 2006 & Battles a few times including the 2008 Big Day Out & 2009 Australian / NZ tour) & it was super cool to catch up again with John from his home in New York City & shoot the shit about beer, his bands, some drum talk, vinyl records & my shitty sound FX 😅 PLUS find out just who he would invite to dinner…this guy has met pretty much every hella rock-person out there since picking up a pair of drum sticks.

LWICFD! ep.8 welcomes my good mate, KEVIN MITCHELL!!! whom y'all might recognise from deadset legendary Aussie band Jebediah & also Kevs other project, Bob Evans.

Full disclaimer - this is a very special episode for me - Like most people my age (now mid+forfties but back then I had just turned 18) I first encountered Kev & his pals Brett, Ness & Chris (aka Jebediah) when I heard them on JJJ in that most glorious & special of decades, THE 90s😎🤘🏼 

Jebs had just dropped the song "Jerks of Attention" & I quickly became a fan, going to many a show as a paying punter (including with my then GF but now wife for our 3rd ever date in 2000!) & life was good. So then "imagine my surprise"😳when a few yrs later (2004) I was lucky enough to fill in for their usual Live sound engineer while he was away on Paternity leave…& the rest they say is history. Stacks of shows, thousands of kms, lots of fun & of course lots of dinners as a audio & guitar tech + tour manager for both Jebs & Bob Evans. 🥳

The last time I saw Kev was with the Jebs when my band Lion Island supported them in 2017 for 1 fun show. Since then obviously a tonne of 💩 has gone down for all concerned & as such we had a lot to catch up on - mostly all good news, some sad, but we cover everything & more in this episode. Some of the good news is you can catch Kev out on the road in October in both of his incarnations as well! Bob Evans is doing the "When Kev Met Bob - The Anthology Tour" this October which features a solo Kev playing tunes from both bands catalogues & Jebs have just put out a bangin' new single called "Gum Up the Bearings" which slaps hard 💥 & they are on tour this November…🍾🤩 links to all this good stuff & more are below.

It was a crazy hot & dusty Tamworth Country Music Festival that was the backdrop to my first ever meeting Loz & hanging out with her & the band she managed at the time… (Spurs For Jesus). Days were fuelled by heinous Woodstock Bourbon & Cola cans combined with sweat, some tears & possibly some blood from the big punch-on I witnessed at a Tamworth venue whose name escapes me (The Imperial??) 

Anyway since those rowdy days, Loz has also been a hairdresser, DJ & band member as well as becoming a booking agent for various bands & now heaps of venues & working on a lot of festivals here on the Cenny Coast. It was so great to catch up with Loz & hear about her adventures along the way & where it all started for her. The dinner party will be off chops too, especially with the "KRAPPY-OKE" styled kick-on, so giddy up! 🐎🤠

LWICFD! ep.5 stars my good mate, Mr SEAN FRAZER!!!

I met Sean back when I was galavanting around town with my hair styled in an electric blue mohawk, slinging gourmet meat tubes aka sausages 🌭 out of my heavy metal pig shaped BBQ in my OG Sausage slinging company called Bangerz & Mosh (Brutal, yet Nutritional!) 

Sean was out & about in a certain commercial rock stations summer jeep party mobile doing live shout outs on air etc. and he very generously gave me a nice shout out on his radio station. Fast forward about 10 years and Sean has climbed the ranks of commercial radio and now rubs shoulders with Jonesy & Amanda around the water cooler @ 101.7 WSFM. 

Apart from hosting his own music interview podcast called the Street Press Podcast (of which I have been a guest on - thanks mate! & link below) Sean also is a talented songwriter and musician, and has played countless gigs as a solo artist and also in his band THE RITZY KIDS who have just released their debut EP called "WALKING TALKING MESS"

Being a promotional genius, it was the bright idea to record this episode before the launch party of said EP was to happen, so without giving away too many poddy trade secrets, this episode was actually recorded some time before it dropped as Sean had to go away and get married 🍾💥

…and it was also the very 1st interview I had done with someone other than myself. To calm my nerves, I had a few confidence building beers before Sean arrived and as such you can hear my excitement / fear / confusion as I literally had no idea what I was doing. (Still don't 🤪)

Anyway, despite badly plugging the above gig, we also chat about Seans fantasy dinner party that may or may not lead to a potential smack-down between 2 old friends / bitter enemies…so to find out what happens & what the hell I am talking about you will have to tune in & see what goes down… 😜
