In fact it is safe to say he has written or produced hits in pretty much every decade. Starting off with his own smash hits with Daddy Cool, producing records for Skyhooks & Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons, he had massive success in the 80’s with Mondo Rock and of course his solo career.

My guest on the show today is Aussie rock guitarist Ronnie Simmons who has had an incredible career, working with Richie Ramone from The Ramones, Faster Pussycat and is currently touring with Rose Tattoo. Ronnie also has a new band, The Redback Spiders and a brand new single.

The Redback Spiders are influenced by classic punk and Australian pub rock with a tinge of ska.  When playing live Ronnie is joined by bandmates Hayden McGoogan and Sean Anderson on guitar, Tommy Hills on bass and Chip Scanu on drums.  Post two live performances in Sydney they were immediately signed to Suburban Records based in the Netherlands.

In the early 70’s the UK delivered a style of rock that included glitter, platform shoes, make up and outlandish clothing. It was Glam Rock -  T-Rex and Bowie embraced it and before long it was literally on the Top of the Pops.

One band was at the forefront, originally known as Sweet Shop, The Sweet and then just Sweet. Brian, Steve, Mick and Andy were the classic line-up. Sadly with the passing of Brian, Steve, and Mick, Andy Scott is left holding the torch, and now Sweet are heading down under for their farewell tour, playing their greatest hits.

He has been awarded 6 grammy awards, including U2’s Beautiful Day & Walk On, and the U2 album How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb. In 2012, he was made a CBE for his contribution to music.

Lucius Borich has been playing music since he was 3 years old. Touring with the Kevin Borich Express, performing with Mark Evans of ACDC and Mick Cox of Rose Tattoo in a Rolling Stones cover band, cleverly named the Rolling Clones. And most famously establishing himself as one of the founding members of progressive rock band Cog.

With an unabashed  inspiration from Tool, Cog soon showed us their own definition of The New Normal and then redefined their sound again with Sharing Space which included themes like 9/11, the occult and political manipulation that seems even more relevant today than it was at the time of release. Icehouse have been part of Oz Rock history for over 40 years, three million albums sold just locally, over nine million sold internationally, eight top 10 albums, and over 30 top 40 singles.

Icehouse are one of the few Aussie bands that have had success outside of our country. With as many as 19 members in the band during that time, one name has remained the driving force of the band.

In the early 80’s a new breed of music came out of the punk scene in the UK. Called New Wave, it was fronted by bands like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Human League, Devo and ABC. By 1982/83 the British Invasion was well underway and in Australia, shows like Countdown embraced it and New Wave bands became a regular on the show.

There was nothing like it in Australia. We had the pub rock bands like Chisel and the experimental bands performance bands like Split Enz but we were waiting for a New Wave act to hit the scene that could match the UK invasion. And then there was a beat for us, and we were suddenly listening to Pseudo Echo.

With over 19 albums and 35 years in the business, Joe Satriani has been nominated for 15 Grammys. He's had over 10 million albums sold and he was inspired to play guitar after the passing of Jimi Hendrix.

Joe Satriani taught guitar to Kirk Hammett from Metallica, David Bryson from Counting Crows, and most famously, Steve Vai.

With a fascination for space and comic books, most notably Marvel's Silver Surfer, and highly acclaimed albums like Not of This Earth and Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani joins us on Long Way to the Top.

Today's guest, John Karabi started his music career in 1989 as the frontman of the Scream and then in 1992, some may say that the stars aligned as he was made the lead singer of one of the biggest bands in hard rock, Motley Crue, replacing Vince Neil for a period of four years.

Since then this rock journeyman has collaborated with some of the biggest hard rock bands around including Ratt, Brides of Destruction, Union, ESP and more recently the US/Oz collaboration The Dead Daisies, replacing frontman John Stevens. John Karabi was back in Australia doing a stripped down solo tour and promoting his new book, so I took the opportunity to ask him a few questions.

Excited to have spoken with my next guest, Alan Edwards, the godfather of British music PR. Alan has worked with some of the most legendary artists of our time, from David Bowie to the Spice Girls via the Rolling Stones, the Stranglers, Blondie, Prince and Amy Winehouse.

His book "I Was There" is a snapshot of his life in the fast paced rock world with stories like working with Keith Moon, heading to the US to work with Blondie, football with Bob Marley, listening to Prince discuss the future of civilisation or getting himself into the middle of a power struggle between Keith Richards and Mick Jagger.

Today's guest, Ed Kuepper, co-founded one of the first punk bands in Australia...dare I say the first. The Saints, were one of the foremost influential punk rock groups in the world. According to, Bob Geldof, rock music in the seventies were changed by three bands, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones and the Saints.

In the late seventies, he changed direction and dabbled with some rock soul and avant jazz with the Laughing Clowns. He's a double Aria winner, Queensland Music Awards Winner, Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and is about to embark on a very extensive tour called The Exploding Universe of Ed Kuepper.

In 2019, Paul Mitchell began working on an album with a bunch of musicians and then Covid hit and lockdowns happened around the world. What was a planned album turned into some collaborations, some humorous and some serious.

They gained the attention of musician management guru, Ian Grant, who suggested a project to help musicians who were struggling due to lockdowns. That was the beginning of what would ultimately lead to a project put together by the makeshift band of artists that were aptly called Kindred Spirit.

Several songs later, the focus was shifted to Parkinson’s Disease, from which Ian was and still is a sufferer. In 2023 the collaboration was aptly titled Think Loud and brought together a who’s who of industry greats. I am honoured to have Paul Mitchell on today’s episode of Long Way to the Top.

This week I had the honour of chatting with two music legends! Leo Sayer, who is music icon with Top 10 hits throughout the decades and songs that have influenced generations of musicians and fans. And Ian Grant who managed Big Country and was responsible for bringing AC/DC to England in the mid-seventies.

Little did he know that he was about to embark on a track that would see him speaking with some of the greatest rock artists of our time. Dave Fishwick, became the subject of a documentary in 2012 when he decided to stick the middle finger up at the banks and start his own bank in the little town of Burnley. And what other name could he call it than the Bank of Dave. It was a David and Goliath story that nearly finished before it got started as the old established banks tried their hardest to stop it.

But what makes this story even more interesting is he got some much needed help from a Little Rock band known as Def Leppard. So Dave owes just as much to the rock gods as he does to the public that supported him in making the dream happen. It has been turned into a movie and it has been a smash hit at Cannes and to join us to tell us all about the movie and his life is the real Dave, Dave Fishwick.

My next guest was a founding member of 80’s rock band Killing Joke, influencing bands like Metallica, Nirvana, Soundgarden. A self taught super producer, Youth started a label was responsible for artists like Take That, Wet Wet Wet, Tom Jones and Maria McKee.

He has produced, worked and remixed Kate Bush, The Verve, Guns n Roses, Pink Floyd, U2, INXS and he even managed to get Crowded House to record naked.

Oh and did I mention he is a member of the Fireman with Paul McCartney?

My guest this week is Marcella Detroit originally known as Marcy Levy, the co-writer of the 1977 Eric Clapton hit Lay Down Sally. She has sung and songwritten for Aretha Franklin, Burt Bacharach, Belinda Carlisle and a host of others.

Marcy had a successful career in the duo Shakespeares Sister with ex Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey. Two Top 10 albums, Sacred Heart and Hormonally Yours and a number one single "Stay" that spent 8 weeks on the charts at number.

Now with a solo career and a brilliant album Gold, like many artists Marcella wrote all the songs during lockdown. Marcy has also been part of the Parkinson’s Disease song, Think Loud alongside Leo Sayer, John Illsley, Josh Phillips, Stuart Elliott and a host of others,

My next guest is one of the founding members of the biggest rock band of the 80’s according to Classic Rock Magazine. Dire Straits has sold up to 120 million records, received Grammys, brit awards and MTV Awards and also helped fashion the MTV generation. 

John Illsley, Bass Guitarist for Dire Straits was one of the four brothers and friends, I guess you could call them brothers in arms that decided to form a little band In 1977. They hit the UK rock scene with an album that would go on to launch the career of one of the most influential and important bands in the history of music.

Originally known as Cafe Racers, the band thankfully adopted the name Dire Straits and a tour with Talking Heads and a top 10 single Sultans of Swing started their journey.

Now a successful solo artist, multiple Brit and Grammy awards, John Illsley is now part of a new single called Think Loud a song to bring awareness to Parkinson’s Disease.

Labelled a punk band when they formed in 1974, The Stranglers were experimental right from the start with a bit of art rock, new wave and goth for good measure, 23 UK Top 40 singles, 19 UK Top 40 albums, over nearly 5 decades. The Stranglers are one of the longest surviving bands to come out of the punk scene in the UK, having just released their latest album Dark Matters and at the time of this recording they were embarking on an Australian Capital City tour.

Josh Phillips is a rock keyboardist and composer who has worded with Procol Harum until the disbanded last year. He has written and performed with Big Country, Leo Sayer, Pete Townsend, Midge Ure, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney.

I spoke with Josh because he has just finished working on a project with rock  manager Ian Grant to bring awareness to Parkinson’s Disease. The new song, headlined by Leo Sayer has a who’s who of UK rock Royalty with appearances by John Illsley of Dire Straights, Marcella Detroit of Shakespeare Sister, Stuart Elliott from Cockney Rebel and guitarist Paul Mitchell.

The video brings together past and current members of The Stranglers, Big Country, Blondie, Sex Pistols, and even tennis legend Pat Cash.
